Opinions de Li Po Cocktail Lounge San Francisco
The most classic mai tais. It's a cozy dive bar with great drinks. Not a whole lot of seating and it can get warm down there but it's a good vibe. Staff are efficient and to the point. Classic spot that's definitely worth a visit, hope they stay open forever.
The absolute best spot in all of SF! Their Mai Tai’s are legendary. If you’re visiting, this is a must see local chinatown bar. No food! Get there before 7 PM to be served by the best bartender around.
I was intent on stopping by Li Po for a Mai Tai before flying out and really enjoyed my time here. It was quite busy for a Thursday evening, but the service was so fast that I had no trouble getting a drink. As soon as I reached the bar, I was asked if I wanted a Mai Tai, which was an easy "yes". At $12 a pop, these are a great value for the city. They are blended and actually reminded me of the tiki drinks back home in New England. While the drink could have benefited with some ice, the price and the friendly staff made it a non-issue. Just a heads-up for others that there is a $10 credit card minimum, so be prepared to grab a second round or bring cash. It was a great atmosphere to wrap up my trip.
This is not only the best dive bar in Chinatown by a mile, but one of the best in SF. Be wary, this place is a true definition of a dive; not the cleanest, funky smells downstairs, bathroom can be a mess, random furniture, etc., but it is a really fun place. This place seems to attract people who get wasted, and it isn't uncommon to find vomit in the bathroom unfortunately. It can get packed on the weekend and they have a downstairs section that they usually open on the weekends when it is busy that has another bar and couches / seating. It can be good to hangout upstairs in the booths or at the bar, but can also get packed with people which is good for meeting others and mingling all over the bar. I have came here so much over the last couple years and always get the Chinese Mai Thai ($12 bucks). YOU HAVE TO GET THE MAI THAI... just look around, everyone will be drinking them, and for good reason. They have a bunch of drinks, but the only other acceptable drink is an Asian beer like Tiger, etc. The Mai Thai is definitely the go-to and grows on you. The one downside to this place is they need to fix the frogger game downstairs! The bartenders are all really cool and can joke around / are friendly. I bring all of my friends visiting SF to this place and regardless of whether they like it or not it is always an experience they remember. An absolute SF staple!
Sometimes you get very lucky while traveling. My sons and I decided to get a drink, randomly at Li Po. We sat next to a man that frequents Li Po when he is in town. He made us aware of Anthony Bourdain featuring it on his show. I could tell right away why he was taken by this bar. You get a retro vibe right away. The kind of bar that makes you feel comfortable. And MISS CONNIE!! 🔥 Her quick wit, style, and no-nonsense bar management made me her biggest fan. She will hit you with a sense of humor that is honestly missing in so many modern bars. Of course the Chinese Mai Tai is amazing. Go for the drinks, stay for the experience!
Solid bar in Chinatown known for their Chinese Mai Tais. They have beer and shot combos, tons of beer, and a full bar. They play good music and feels like a party. We came here on a Thursday evening and it wasn’t too crowded but a good flow of people. They also have special Chinese alcohol here too that you can’t find at regular dive bars. They don’t accept Amex and there’s some street parking nearby. They said downstairs there’s another bar past the bathrooms but when we were there only the upstairs was open.
My friend and I stopped by Li Po Cocktail Lounge after exploring Chinatown, and it’s definitely an experience. The bartender was pretty strict about us only taking pictures if we ordered, and while she wasn’t too happy with us choosing a non-alcoholic drink, we didn’t mind. She also tried to have us change seats because the corner of the bar apparently wasn’t good Feng Shui, but we decided to stay anyway. Honestly, her personality added to the whole experience, so I’m still giving 5 stars. The place has a real historic vibe, right down to the bathroom. They’re known for their Chinese Mai Tai, which even has a trademark certificate on display. Fun fact: Anthony Bourdain visited here, so it’s definitely got some character. If you’re looking for a unique spot in Chinatown, this is worth a visit.
Li Po Cocktail Lounge is exactly what you would expect from a dive bar in Chinatown, and that is part of its charm. The interior is a little worn but it works perfectly for a casual, laid back drink with friends. The Chinese Mai Tai is the signature drink here and definitely worth ordering. It is popular for a reason, with a smooth and tasty flavor, though for me personally it was not too strong as some other reviews mentioned. Service was quick and the atmosphere was easygoing. It is a fun stop if you are in the area and want something low key.
A charming hole in the wall with delicious Mai Tais. The drinks were really good, but (at least for us) it was the kind of place to just grab one drink or two for the novelty and then move on to where you wanted to actually spend time. The bar only seating made it difficult for three people to have a conversation, but we all agreed it that we were glad we went.
Okay, so this is a Chinese dive bar at its fullest, super fun unique experience, but also the service is a little weak. They sequestered us to a corner and were oddly strict about it. I would 100% go back just because of its uniqueness and to show friends something unique but alone I don’t know if I would come back
I've been curious about this place for a while because of the mixed reviews I had read, so I decided to try it for myself. Unfortunately, my experience wasn’t great. The atmosphere is unpleasant; the place is small, it was hot, and the smell wasn’t good at all. Since I wasn’t sure what to order, they recommended a Mai Tai, but I have to say it was a bad choice. I really didn’t like the taste. Even though the service was average, it didn’t make up for the other negative aspects of the place. It’s located in Chinatown, and I understand it has a reputation for being a classic in the area, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you're looking for a very, very basic experience.
Gross, dirty, run-down atmosphere that is only worsened by the horrific older woman bartender- whom I’m assuming is Connie based on reviews. She was beyond disrespectful to everyone in my party. Here’s everything she did: - Yelling at my party for sitting down at a table and asking her where to order. -Telling us to “buy a drink or get out” after already purchasing 3 drinks and simply asking for a water. We learned this happened to another woman who was at the bar and asked for water 10 minutes prior. No water served here! - Yelling at my party members for removing the tip from our bill, demanding we tip her after calling us “cheap” and saying “don’t disrespect my (receipt) paper” after removing the tip. Everything in this establishment is gross - the bathroom, the atmosphere, the attitude of the bartender - the list goes on and on. If I could rate this place zero stars, then I would. I’m not sure how the photos on this Google Listing are still allowed since they do not accurately represent what the Actual Establishment looks like in 2025/2026. Same for the reviews, we thought this would be a fun place because of the 4.4 rating, but obviously that is not an accurate representation of reality at Li Po. Yeah, Anthony Bourdain visited this establishment - that’s the only reason it’s getting visitors. Not worth it! If you want to be berated for existing and be served a bad, brown Mai Tai from pre-made mixes that’s over-served to mask the cheap mix, then this just might be the place for you.
