The meat balls are perfectly cooked in the sauce but make sure you get a basket of bread to soak up the sauce
Turns out that potatoe pizza is delicious! Great appetizers and a nice desert menu.
Ponds crust is perfect; light and crisp but not dry. Flavor combinations were great. Meatballs were flavorful and the sauce was perfection. Would recommend and come back.
Delicious pizza with a special recipe dough. It's just a little bit different, but not blatantly obviously so. Regardless it's delicious! Great friendly knowledgeable service. Wildly interesting eclectic decor, especially the washroom. The neighbourhood is a little more gritty but not dangerous by my accounts, and there are neighbourhood ambassadors around as well.
I love this place because I love the food an the cool spaces. But be forewarned, the "pizza" is a very particular recipe with a flour that does not appeal to all palates. You want perfect, classic pizza in San Francisco? That's what Il Casaro, Delfina and above all A16 are for. You want a low-fi amazing hipster food experience with a ridiculous wine book? Where you might run into other hipsters braving the 6th street scene? With a roof deck? And cool music? Where you'll probably not run into and have to deal with you straight-world friends? You come here. BTW before any of you all decide to criticize my taste and my exquisite pizza-palate a word of warning: you roll up on the king you best not miss. You go pizza toe to pizza toe against me? And YOU will LOSE! ..... and then I'll take you out for pizza. Anyway, come here and enjoy the eclectic old-school vibe and the really terrific food. Montesacro is truly a hidden, discreet pocket of a different kind of San Francisco goodness. Mangia.
We absolutely loved dining here! The pesto and the eggplant with red pepper pinsas were outstanding, and the cauliflower salad appetizer was bursting with flavor. The atmosphere has a charming vintage feel that makes the place so inviting, and the staff’s kindness made the experience even better. Can’t wait to visit again!
- Dietary options: If you have dietary restrictions, check with staff — the dough blend may help with digestibility but gluten isn’t absent unless specified. - Neighborhood awareness: If you’re unfamiliar with the SoMa/South of Market area, it’s good to arrive with daylight or be aware of surroundings, especially at night. --- If you like, I can pull up the most recent (past 3‑6 months) user reviews for Montesacro SoMa (both top and critical) so you can see how the experience is right now. Would you like me to do that?
Montesacro Pinseria - SoMa: This place is a must-visit for pinseria lovers. Known for their Roman-style pinsa—a lighter, airier, and crispier take on pizza—they nail authentic Italian flavors with fresh ingredients. The crust is perfectly chewy yet crunchy, and toppings like fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and seasonal veggies shine. The atmosphere is trendy and relaxed, ideal for casual dining or a night out with friends. Service is efficient and friendly. A great spot for a delicious, unique pizza experience in SoMa.
Wow! I've often walked past this place and seen people eating at the sidewalk tables. A friend suggested we have lunch there today and what a surprise! The pizza special was delicious. It's a cool spot, almost feels like you're in Italy. And the service is exceptional -- as good as you'll get in any restaurant. I look forward to going back.
What an absolute gem-in-the-wall. Located somewhat in an alleyway that is off the main street (which by the way, the main street did feel sketchy), and upon entering you feel immersed in a rustic restaurant that gives off huge authenticity vibes. We were served by someone who was so knowledgeable of the food, was able to articulate how they were special, and provided such enthusiasm, it was refreshing. We decided to get 2 pizzas for 2 people, and although it was said they are somewhat personal-sized, they were slightly larger (so expect extras!). We chose the white pizza MARANELLA and a red called TORMARANCIA and they were DELICIOUS! Absolutely some of the best pizzas I've ever had. The crust was light, crispy, and yet filling. We paired the pizza with some wine, and it hit the spot. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend all those visiting SF to try!
We dined at Montesacro Pinseria - SoMa last weekend, and the food was absolutely amazing! Their pizza selection is fantastic, with a variety of unique options, and the quality of the pizza is top-notch—perfectly crispy crust and fresh ingredients. The service was great, making the overall dining experience even better. The only downside is that it's located in a neighborhood with a lot of homeless people, and parking can be difficult, so we suggest using Uber or a taxi for convenience. Despite that, the delicious food is well worth the visit!
The restaurant is tucked away pleasant surprise. We were a group of 7 and just dropped in for an early dinner/late lunch. The inside is beautifully patina’d and transports you into what other Pizza/Italian spots want to bring you to but can’t capture the natural, raw aesthetic. The food was great. We ordered the meat and cheese plate to start which nice. We then got an assortment of pizzas and each didn’t disappoint. The crust was crispy, springy, and substantial without being too much. There was a range of flavors and the meat pizzas varieties were the standout alongside the unique tuna pizza, which was tasty but felt stronger as a shareable moment amongst a group. The side chili oil added a nice kick. The staff was super friendly and very attentive, I’d def come back for a cute date night.
We had a late lunch with a large party. The food was very good and service was excellent. Our server did a wonderful job providing the suggestions we needed. We split three pizzas, some meatballs, bread and soft cheese. The neighborhood was definitely sketchy but we didn’t have any issues with anyone. Once inside the cute restaurant we forgot about what was outside.
Our experience at Montesacro was amazing. The atmosphere was picturesque, you really felt like you were in a little restaurant in Italy. The service was incredible - from the warm & friendly host to the bartender who helped us with a drink while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive, to our server who went above and beyond. The food was incredible - best meatballs I’ve ever had, and the pinsa was so yummy, perfectly cooked and the toppings were all delicious. Would highly recommend!

We had the soppressata pinsa which was so delicious. I would definitely order that again. The crust is divine. The kale salad was just so so.
Super tasty Roman-style pizza (with a great selection of antipasti too) served in a cozy, gorgeous space. I stopped by Montesacro SoMa with a friend for a weekend dinner after receiving multiple recommendations for this spot from several coworkers / friends. I got there a few minutes early, so I was immediately struck by how cozy and intimate the store felt; the staff seemed relaxed but on top of their game, and I loved that you could somewhat (but not quite...to preserve the mystery of it all) see the kitchen work their magic with a partially visible container of prepared dough, slightly exposed assembly counter. I love the walls of wine bottles, random chandeliers, and deli counter -- it genuinely felt like I was back in Rome. For food, we started with the Sottoli, a plate of beautifully EVOO-marinated vegetables (red bell peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and eggplant), topped with a bit of chili and parsley. I loved the simplicity of this antipasti; the veggies were super flavorful and delicious. It's a great vegetarian or gluten-free choice, but you can also get an order of their bread if you'd like to bulk up this appetizer. The veggies were delicious on their own, but also went wonderfully with the main star of the show, the pizza. We got their margherita just so we could compare this classic vs. other pizza joints, and they certainly did not disappoint. The tomato sauce was flavorful, with just the right mix of herbaceous, savory, acidic, and sweet, and the pizza was topped with a generous portion of melty mozzarella and basil. I love that they fully lean into the Roman-ness of their restaurant by serving the more ovular pinsa, with a slightly thicker, chewier crust and highlighting local Roman ingredients. Now that I've confirmed their margherita pizza (or, rather, pinsa) is 10/10, I can't wait to go back and try their other options!
Wonderful quaint pizza restaurant in SoMa. We ordered everything our server recommended, including two unusual pizza flavors, and weren’t disappointed. One bologna appetizer and two pizzas were more than enough for two people. 4/5 only because we thought the dishes were slightly on the dry side and the wine list was a little too expensive to our taste. But I’d definitely go back!

You are transported at this little interesting italian restaurante and gourmet pizza place. Worth it. Great wines too. Do not miss it, near soma.

Eventhoug the menu advertised many items as Gluten Free, this place is not safe for Celiacs or people sentive to Gluten/Wheat. I got very confusing answers about items being really GF, in some cases I was told they did not offer what the menu listed or they said items contained "very little gluten", the also do not seem to have protocols to avoid cross contamination as they could not explain well how they manage it. Against my own judgement I still ate after asking so many questions and I did get a strong reaction. The only plus is that the waiter was very helpful.
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, now the quality is not the same, the bread basket got smaller and the service is fast and cleans the table immediately not giving you the opportunity to leisure. It used to be able to transport me back to Italy, now it just another US restaurant. Sadly the experience is no longer worth the cost
After countless neighbors sang Montesacro’s praises, my partner and I arrived with sky‑high expectations. Sadly, the evening never climbed beyond middling, and a few missteps sent it tumbling well below average. What we ordered Porchetta 4 / 5 Nicely seasoned, juicy, good crackling—easily the best bite of the night. Pinsa “Grottaferrata” 2 / 5 Arrived lukewarm and dripping oil; toppings felt flat. Pinsa “Ponte Mammolo” 2 / 5 Same temperature and grease issues. Olive‑oil flavor absent, crust lacked the airy lightness pinsa is known for. Strawberry Tiramisu (off‑menu “special”) 2 / 5 No espresso‑soaked ladyfingers, just strawberry cream with chocolate chips. Portion: one small square. Price: $20—hard to view as anything but a gouge. (We both felt queasy after dinner.) Service & Hygiene Our server was friendly but repeatedly wiped tables with a bare hand, then handled plates and the POS screen without washing. That alone took the shine off the evening. Most desserts fall between $6‑15, so the surprise $20 tiramisu stung. The pinsas, though generously sized, didn’t justify their mid‑$20s price tags given the execution. Pro tip: Skip Stevenson Street between 5th & 6th on foot; the alley’s smell and hazards can sour an already mediocre evening. Overall rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2 / 5)
