I felt like I walked into a restaurant in Japan! Amazing tasting menu. The sashimi was so fresh and local. The sake pairing was perfect. John was super helpful. I can't wait to come back the next time I'm in town!

The staff were amazing and accommodating to allergies. The vibe was excellent and the food was perfection. The only downside is that it's hard to get a reservation.

This place has to be one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. The plates are small, but each dish is better than the last. Great place to get a bunch of dishes and share it with friends. The drinks are great too. We got an assortment of dishes, and there was something for everyone (including vegetarians). The ambiance in this place is excellent, and given how popular this place is, I would highly recommend making a reservation. This place is likely to get a Michelin star at some point because it is so good!

Due Chuenchujit

We got the set menu with upgrade to deluxe sashimi and enjoyed every dish. The sushi platter is perfectly setup for the number of diners. The miso glazed cod is excellent. The tsukune chicken skewers is flavorful and goes very well with the egg yolk. Between the 2 closing dish, we like the mapodobu better. The service is excellent and the ambiance has a Japanese izalaya vibe without being too loud.

One of my favorite SF restaurant. Some authentic Japanese dishes and some more modern ones. Overall everything is very solid and ranges from perfectly executed sashimi with clean flavours and fun skewers to comfort brothy bites. The restaurant is also very beautiful with a charming patio and an main room that transports you to Japan without being gimmicky. Order the whole menu! Everything is delicious.

So good!! The owner is from Japan so he’s particular about details which I truly appreciate. The ceramic dishes, oden cart from Japan, quality ingredients - all create the full experience. Everything we tried was delicious and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. My mom (from Japan) thoroughly enjoyed it! 😉

Booked for a friends’ reunion Rintaro definitely reached our high food expectations. From Yakitori through oden to final dish of house-made mapo tofu and rice everything seems to be thought through. The chefs deliver excellent combinations of authentic Japanese flavors. Nice selection of sake and few other drinks like wine and beer. Service wise: very nice from the front of the house altho there is no designated waiting area and everyone who shows up early is pushed on the side or outside. Majority of waiters are full of good vibe and you see how they identify with what is being served. Except a read/pinkish haired young lady with huge golden spectacles that came across a bit aggressive with her approach, didn’t smile once and gave us uninviting vibes. Overall great experience and will be coming back 🫶🏼

Fantastic elevated Japanese izakaya experience. First time back since the flooding last year, and it was a delightful evening. The set menu is worth the price and will fill you up. Remains one of my favorite places in San Francisco.

An amazing experience! Rintaro is a charming restaurant tucked behind their courtyard. The staff were nice and knowledge! The food was incredible, great presentation and delivered on taste! Most of the dishes are on the smaller side, so be sure to order several!

What a treat! Rintaro is one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in SF. Food quality is great, service is attentive and the vibes are on point. Can be pricey but worth it for the special occasion!

SF Izakaya 💯 Nestled in the Mission, Rintaro is a California inspired Japanese izakaya that’s been a hit since opening I’d been meaning to try the spot for a few years and finally was able to snag the still popular reservations that open ~21 days out The spacious space is bustling with every table filled and an atmosphere that feels warm and inviting Craft cocktails and a focused but varied menu ensure that every meal will be delicious and memorable Our favorites for the night were the gyusuji (slow simmered beef tendons in oden broth), tsukune with raw egg, the chilled udon with duck and dipping broth, and the mapotofu don…also the amazing hojicha dessert Lovely meal and stoked to finally check Rintaro off my hit list 📷 Yosedofu $15 / San Ten Mori $45 ~ blue fin, hamachi, halibut sashimi / Oden Gyusuji $14 ~ long simmered tendon with oden broth, Furofuki daikon $8, Rintaro Hanpen $14 / Yakitori Sasami $10 / Yakitori tsukune $12 + raw egg $3 / Kurobata tonkatsu $25 / Kamojiro Udon $25 ~ Chilled dipping udon with duck / Mabodofu Don $17 / Hojicha Panna Cotta $12 / Yonashi Budo Zero ~ poached Bartlett pear in grape jelly $18 📍Rintaro (San Francisco, CA) Dining is indoor only and reservations are recommended on Resy. Credit cards accepted.

We’ve been coming to Rintaro for close to seven years now. It holds a lot of our date night memories. If you’re doing it right, you’re sitting at the bar, watching the chef grill chicken skewers over the charcoal until your face is filled with smoke. You might also be outside, imagining yourself in small streets of Osaka. Get the housemade umeshu soda.

M

Some of the most delicious and well prepared Japanese cuisine we’ve had in the city! Wonderful, attentive service staff. Tons of variety on the menu and food items are the perfect size to share amongst your party. Not a cheap izakaya but the quality / taste did back up the prices asked. Go with a few friends, order a bunch of the menu, a couple beers, and enjoy yourselves!

Everything was absolutely amazing. Rintaro deserves more than 5 stars. I have literally nothing bad to say or even nitpick. Truly a phenomenal establishment to achieve that. We definitely will be coming back. We did the set menu and suggest splurging and upgrading the sashimi plate.

I was truly impressed by everything at Rintaro from the food, to the ambiance, to the staff, and everything in between. We made a reservation for a small group to celebrate a special occasion, without even telling the restaurant, the day of the staff and owner went the extra mile to make it a special one. While the tasting menu looks great, we ordered off the menu instead and opted to try almost one of everything family style. The sashimi tasted super fresh with local touches and garnish. The yakitori chicken cuts were definitely the star of the night, each one tasting better than the last. For dessert, the hojicha panda cotta was heavenly. The drink menu perfectly matches the entrees, my favorite being the house made plum wine. I’m amazed at how quickly the Rintaro team brought the restaurant back online after the flooding in SF without missing a beat. Thanks!

We didn’t get the tasting menu but ordered most dishes off of it, plus a deluxe sashimi and oden. Would def recommend the chicken skewer with egg dip, black cod, and the hojicha panna cotta was the highlight. The deluxe sashimi was quite overpriced for what it was, and the oden and other skewers were just fine. Lovely vibe tho!

I heard this place for a long time and it was very hard to get the reservation. We went right after they’re open. The environment looks like a Japanese garden, and it doesn’t really feel like it was in the middle of the city provide a feeling of calm and peacefulness. Everything was prepped. The staffs were very nice to us and they explain everything that was on the menu. We got the set menu. To be honest everything is just perfection. We upgraded the sashimi to the deluxe version. Their ikura don was so awesome. I never had ikura that has so much umami in it. Panna Cotta was perfect and full of the aroma of Hojicha. Love this place and will be back again and again!

The food here is outstanding—fresh, delicate, and crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Although our waiter had a bit of an attitude, it didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the meal. Our group of five ordered 14 dishes, and while we were quite full, we couldn’t resist ordering dessert—and it was absolutely the right choice. The Hojicha Panna Cotta and Japanese Soufflé Cheesecake were both exceptional, easily the best we’ve ever tasted.

Wonderful food with unique and local ingredients. Authentic Japanese yet San Francisco experience. We sat in the outside courtyard, and even though it was a windy day, we were comfortable and warmed by the heaters. We opted for the tasting menu which had most of the things we had wanted to try. The sashimi was exceptional, as delicious as the fish market sashimi in Tokyo. I loved the Chiizu Tori Katsu, cheese being such an unexpected twist to the dish. Tsukuni skewers were likewise very flavorful with the tare dipping sauce. The mabodofu don was so comforting and delicious to end the tasting menu. I would love to return.

We had a very good experience at Izakaya Rintaro. Most of the food was excellent—fresh, balanced, and beautifully presented. The only dish that really missed for us was the cold udon. It wasn’t bad, it just felt out of place with everything else. Cocktails were decent but nothing amazing. Service was attentive and friendly. The biggest downside is value. Dinner for two (five small plates, dessert, and three cocktails) came to about $200, and the portions were pretty small—I definitely could’ve eaten more. My wife was satisfied, but for that price, it didn’t feel like enough food. Bottom line: Great food and atmosphere, but too expensive for the portion size. Glad we tried it once, but probably wouldn’t go back at full price.

A great experience, good food, and a nice environment! We ended up getting 8 dishes for the four of us and everything was delicious although not very filling. If I was going again I would get the set menu for a nice assortment. The skewers were my favorite - great charred flavor and very juicy. Overall a great evening! Reserve in advance.

Food was delicious and unique and cocktails, sakes and sweet mills were very tasty. I love that it’s mostly small shareable plates. I’m gluten-intolerant and they actually had quite a few food options that were already gluten-free or could be modified to be gluten-free and the staff were very knowledgeable and helpful with navigating those options. They even have a dedicated fryer for their gluten-free fried chicken wings and two gluten-free deserts, a panna cotta and a crustless cheesecake. The cheesecake was especially devine, with a light fluffy texture and slight extremely well-balanced sweetness. Ambiance was nice and service was attentive, friendly and professional.

Went to see what all the hype was about, definitely a place worth checking out. Their winter menu set was amazing, had a ton of food for a reasonable price. I did have to take some home but if you’ve been out all day this definitely a place to stop at by the end of the day to fill up.

A
Alexis Newman

A really delicious tasting menu with diverse dishes! I came with a few friends and we all tried the tasting menu. One friend has a gluten sensitivity and they were able to accommodate her with the one dish (katsu) that contained gluten. Each dish was unique and very tasty. The meal was extremely filling. Service was wonderful. Overall a great experience!

A
Anny L

I tried their unique set menu for $45 per person! It's amazing, which included Oden, Sashimi, Salad, andUdon!! At a reasonable price, you can try most of their signature cuisines. Also, their yakitori is a must-try!! I love their chicken oyster, it's so tender and juicy, and I can eat it every day!!

M
Martin Ong

Had a good time with the great food and excellent service. A variety of things to choose from. My sure to make reservations it's popular!

K
Kay Bee

My dinner companion was running a bit late. The hostess was kind enough to help with sake selection while I waited for my friend to arrive. The place is deceptively bigger than it looks from the outside. It was one of those rare hot evening in SF. The meal was perfect as it want too heavy. We ordered 5 plates and shared. It was so good that I’m going back again with others.

C
Cuong Duong

Simple, but elegant. If you enjoy the simple and pure flavors that Japanese cuisine specializes in, this is the place for you. Dishes were not complex, but the flavors felt elevated by the great preparation and ingredient quality. The overall taste was delicious all the same. For a party of 4, we ordered 8 dishes. Everything was spectacular in taste despite fairly simple ingredient lists compared to restaurants of the same price point. Noteworthy dishes are the sashimi, and the udon. The seafood quality is incredible, especially the yellowtail. While the carbonara udon was small, the taste was unique and delicious. The price seems quite high for the serving sizes as the tapa size dishes are priced almost at full meal sizes of surrounding restaurants. This was surprising especially for the skewers. As it was recommended to order 10 dishes per table, it seems a little high. I'm not sure if the ambience and service makes the pricing justifiable but it was a good enough experience and tasting menu to rate 5/5 for Japanese food in San Francisco. This is one place where all the izakaya food felt very intentionally prepared, with no negative elements or difference in quality between different dishes.

M
Mat Lit

Really enjoyed the set menu and the variety of courses. In particular, the tsukune (super juicy), oden (rich broth) and sashimi (each with their own garnishes) were my favorites, though everything was delicious. Also, the hojicha panna cotta is absolutely sensational—what an amazing way to end a delicious meal. Service was extremely friendly in general and they made nice accommodations for pregnant and milk-allergic diners. Fun experience all-around.

T
Tee Ponsukcharoen

Authentic, thoughtful, and delicious Izakaya food in SF. It is an upscaled experience for the food you get on the streets in Tokyo like oden or yakitori. The atmosphere is definitely more private and classy than on the streets. The flavor and the quality of food is definitely more refined as well. We enjoyed the Hamachi collar, oden, tsukune, and pretty much all the savory dishes. However, the star of the meal is the Hojicha Pana Cotta. It is incredible how can they find the right spot for the creaminess and sweetness that make you slurp the whole thing with pleasure yet without guilt, while the hojicha aroma has strong presence yet no tea bitter flavor? Definitely a place to try if you love Japanese food and are willing to pay extra for incredible food.

G
Grace Zhang

we had their tasting menu, which came with several courses and dessert. the highlights were definitely the chicken skewers and the hojicha panna cotta, although all of the dishes were prepared beautifully and had such thoughtful pairings of flavors. very reasonable price for the quality and quantity of food; left feeling very full which is not always the case with tasting menus! will definitely be back in the future to celebrate special occasions.

We loved this buzzy Izakaya with its warm cedar and redwood tones, ie beautiful slab of hinoki wood for the bar, and delicious Japanese food. We are drawn to the mission district and this place embodies a lot of what we love about Northern California. It was easy to feel at home here.

A

Everything was super delicious! Service is attentive and the atmosphere of the restaurant is great. Beautiful space. The bathroom soap is amazing smelling and love the candle, but the door lock gets stuck. Handtowel is nice and substantial. Total was about $105 including tax and tip for 2 people. We ordered 5 dishes. (Forgot to take a picture of the udon.) Amberjack was fatty and delish. Yuzu added a nice kick and brightness. Tastes great, isn't as worth or unique to the restaurant tho. 7/10 Duck salad was super light and refreshing. Most unique dish. Highly recommend. A lil light on duck tho. 8/10 Momo sansho and tsukune. Both super juicy and delicious. Tsukune had a sweet glaze that got carmelized. More unique of the two. 9/10 Udon texture is so bouncy and the broth is super flavorful. 8/10

I’ve never been to Japan so I won’t speak to authenticity but, engulfed by the smell of wood burning smoke and sitting in a vibrant courtyard next to a street vendors’ cart, I certainly felt transported out of SF. Convinced by my fellow diner to have the tasting menu, the food did not disappoint. Highlights included the udon, chicken katsu with cowgirl creamery cheese, and hojicha panna cotta.

Very fun and delicious dishes! We got 6 dishes between 3 of us and it was a good amount of food. Total after tax and tip was $52 What I liked and would get next time: - fried: katsu with cowgirl creamery cheese inside plus shredded cabbage - finals: raw tuna over rice What was ok - chilled: duck breast salad. Everything was good except for the mustard greens I would have loved it if it was all arugula cus the mustard greens had a fennel taste I didn’t like. Wouldn’t mind getting it again tho cus it’s pretty unique What I didn’t like and wouldn’t get next time - grilled: chicken thigh skewers - soup: fish head - finals: minced pork over rice. The homemade tofu was good tho but not the res

Rintaro takes me right back to pontocho alley in Kyoto, highly recommend, probably my current favorite restaurant in SF. Get counter seats, ideally near the grill if possible. Seeing behind the counter, you can see they're burning real binchotan, you see simmering oden with the drop lid, the fryer with tonkatsu and croquettes. I focused primarily on the yakitori here and did not regret. First: ume fizz. They make their own ume cordial (I assume umeshu) using locally sourced ume - they're selling 20lbs boxes of it from the farmer and keeping some in house. Delicious, rich, and lengthened with soda. Skewers: the liver is fantastic, 9.5/10. Perfectly cooked, not grainy or excessively irony, the tenderness of the texture felt a little like foie, a little gelatinous and plump. Seasoned with tare, I would have preferred just salt, served with garlic puree which was nice but not necessary. So good, I would have ordered another two. Negima, thighs were cooked nicely, surprising yellow/white onion instead of green, maybe a smidge too much char on the tare. Tsukune, super tender and juicy - I didn't think the egg added a lot so I'll skip next time. Chicken heart, seasoned with just salt - also fantastic. Some of the most tender and juicy, succulent heart I've ever had. Lastly, hatsumoto chicken artery - takes a while to grill to render the fat, I assume they season with tare multiple times as it really lacquers on, it has a bit of a chew but has deep chicken and tare flavor as you chew it. Cannot miss the liver and heart. Ask the server for the off the menu offcuts Service was excellent, super friendly. I enjoyed speaking with the cook manning the grill who was happy to explain things. Nice touch: when a dish is ready to go out to a table, they call onegaishimasu instead of hands or service. My server was happy to explain the yuzu, other citrus, and ume drinks. Really sense of omotenashi here. Will be coming back, and trying to reserve seat at the counter again. A real hidden gem.

Food was fantastic, small shared plates or you can do a preset menu. We had the squid, skewers, tofu, croquettes, pork, udon and a fluffy cheesecake dessert shared across three people.

Rintaro might be my favorite Izakaya in SF right now. Loved every dish I ordered, it has a modern touch and the flavors are spot on. We opted for the a la carte instead of the set menu so we can try everything we wanted to which ended up being perfect! Everything we ordered: Ika no Nuta, $17 Hikari Farm mizuna, tokyo turnip, fuji apple, scallion and Monterey Bay squid with mustardy sweet white miso Gindara no Sunomono, $23 Saikyo miso-cured Ft. Bragg black cod with Hikari Farm cucumbers in sweet vinegar Shungiku Kamo Sarada, $22 Hikari Farm chrysanthemum greens with charcoal-grilled Sonoma Liberty duck breast and kumquat Kurobuta Tonkatsu, $28 Becker Lane Berkshire pork loin katsu with Acme panko, black Hatcho miso sauce and snowy cabbage Rintaro Hanpen, $12 Steamed fluffy Ft. Bragg lingcod fishcake Kimoto/Yamahai Taiheizan Akita Junmai Draft Asahi, $10 Tokyo, Japan (Rice Lager) Yakitori Sori - Charcoal-grilled chicken oyster Hojicha Panna Cotta, $12 Japanese toasted green tea panna cotta with hojicha syrup and almond cookies

An unforgettable experience. Kasumi, our server felt like being served by a professional but also carried a vibe that felt like I was being served in someone’s home. Each interaction with the staff was relaxing. Each dish had character, it wasn’t just delicious but it sparked conversation and made me feel like it was something someone clearly thought about and worked hard to develop. How often does that happen from going to a restaurant?! Thank you to all who made my experience special.

Rintaro has completely captured the spirit of a contemporary izakaya in Japan. The food and drinks are both fantastic, with every dish feeling authentic and incredibly delicious. Sitting at the bar lets you observe the kitchen when sweat hits the stove! It's the perfect place to go if you're looking for an amazing dining experience that will transport you to Tokyo.

We went to Rintaro as part of an event, a wedding reception. It was by far the best food I've had at a wedding reception. There was all-you-can-eat top-tier sashimi with three types of uni, including two from Japan. They had a yakitori ongoing the entire three hours, and their drinks were top-notch. Service was absolutely excellent, given the situation. They catered to everyone, and they made sure that the families with kids that were there were well taken care of. I was thoroughly impressed. They definitely deserved their Michelin accolades. I would go there again as part of the regular dinner service.

A reservation is highly recommended—otherwise, you’re looking at least a 30-minute wait, even on a weekday. You know an Asian restaurant is good when the rice is cooked to perfection. Each grain holds its shape and texture—alive and distinct. I’m pretty sure they use high-quality rice. The Japanese-style mapo tofu was savory with just a hint of sweetness—very well done. The chicken skewers were tender and flavorful, and the black cod was soft and rich in taste. The cucumber salad on the side was delicately thin-sliced and lightly marinated in a refreshing yuzu dressing—a perfect pairing. Overall, an excellent dining experience. I would definitely come back.

I was in town to visit friends and family. The friend I was staying with had been wanting to go here for years - before the flooding shut them down for a while - so she was super excited to get a reservation. The only one available was at 9:30 on a Tuesday night. But that worked perfectly for our schedule. It was very cold, even though we were seated inside. I can't imagine how cold the folks sitting outside were. But I bet it's lovely on a warm summer evening! The food was excellent. We opted for the winter tasting menu. At $90 per person, I think it's a deal. It was a great way to taste some of their fan favorite items, and we got so much food. They even brought a bonus order of karaage because they didn't think the katsu was a big enough portion for 3 people! I do wish I had gotten the kake udon instead of the mabodofu don (rice bowl). But I wanted to taste the house-made tofu. I was not disappointed. It was just so filling! My friend got the udon. So I did get to taste that too, and it was delicious. We also probably over-ordered because we wanted to try the gyoza too. They were great, but unnecessary with how much food we got from the set menu!

We got the Winter Set Menu we spent the extra $15 to get everything on thr set menu and it was worth it! Everything on the set menu was flavorful and will definitely come back. Since we were on our honeymoon we got complimentary Umai Fizz drink which was delicious, I had to order the full size. If in San Francisco this is a must go to place and getting the Winter Set Menu should be the first to try. Staff was amazing and explained every dish they served.

So cozy and delicious. From the exterior to the delightful interior to the restrooms, this is a beautiful restaurant. Wonderful service and the food was all delicious. We loved the ume welcome drink. We tried the sashimi sampler, the gyoza, duck mizuna salad, trumpet mushroom and chicken thigh sansho yakitori, matsutake udon and passionfruit profiterole. Our favorite was the mushroom yakitori. If we came back we'd try more yakitori and the whole fried fish. Tricia and our server were awesome. Excited to try recipes from the cookbook!

Great service. Great ambiance. Great food. Shared 8 courses between 2 people. Left full and very satisfied. Hojicha panna cotta, and squid salad were the most unique in terms of flavor. Dumpling were delicious and a beautify presentation. Skewers smokey flavour was delicious. Mochi kinchaku was warm and a lovely texture. Other dishes not mentioned were also delicious. Though the ones mentioned above were especially yummy. We sat at the bar seating, which gave a great view of the chefs preparation.

Rintaro is an experience. The chef’s father was a temple carpenter and built the restaurant interior with precision and incredible attention to detail. Maybe it was the clay on the walls from where I grew up or maybe it was the welcome as we were seated but I immediately felt at home. The food is prepared with the utmost concentration and care. Sit at the bar if you can and watch the amazing process of preparation. My favorite? Beef tendon in broth with shiitake mushrooms. A wonderful and special meal.

Really good izakaya place. I like the little garden area they have going on. Their interior is nice as well. The ambiance is very chill. Overall nice place for an intimate date. Or just hanging out with a small group of friends. Staff is very nice and efficient. The food is really good and the staff is great at explaining pairings. Their sashimi “sauce” pairings are really good. Wasabi is made locally. Their plum wine is nice and refreshing. Usually plum wines are too sweet for me but this one was really good, refreshing and a little tangy. The chicken tonkatsu was our favorite. Definitely a little on the pricier side, reason for the missing star.

Sitting at the bar I had a wonderful view of the food prep taking place. The set menu was reasonably priced for what you receive. If I went again I would skip the sake pairing in favor of a la carte drinks. Positive experience, would recommend to a friend.

Awesome food! Especially the yakitori as you can tell it was grilled from the heart ❤️. However, can’t say the same about the service as it has the typical SF pretension 🥲. Recommend the tuna sashimi, any yakitori. Skip the ‘carbonara’ udon.

Brutally honest review of our recent dinner: Some dishes are sub-par, some are to die for! I'll start by saying that I like this restaurant and I want to come back. The service and vibe/ambient was amazing! However, I do have to be honest with the food. Disappointments: Sashimi: 2.5/5 we got the honmaguro bluefin tune sashimi dish for $28. while the quality of the fish seems good, they don't know how to properly handle, defrost, age, and serve the fish. The texture was sticky and chewey. they're not a sushi place and the quality of the sashimi directly shows this. I would definitely not get sashimi here. Fried dishes: 3.5/5 the tori katsu and the tonkatsu were friend well, and the panko used was good quality and well fried. but the meat was the disappointment. they got the texture right (soft and juicy) but the meat lack any depth of flavor. especially the kurobuta pork. again, proper tonkatsu required careful aging of the meat, and they don't have the required skills for this. Neutral: The kama tama udon was interesting. It wasn't quite what we had in mind, and probably won't get it again, but no complaints about it. Delightful must gets: Yakitori - Chicken oyster: 5/5 Wow!!! The yakitori here is to die for! We got an off-menu item, the chicken oyster, and it was cooked to perfection. the grill fire taste is perfectly preserved in the meat, crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with a depth of flavor that is as good as the great yakitoris I've had in Japan. Asahi draft: 4.5/5 It is not easy to find Asahi draft and this place serves them! Asahi draft is so clean and pure, no wonder it is Japan's most sold beer. I could tell the restaurant cares well for the draft beer pipes as there was no negative factor (metallic taste) from the pipe. It was perfectly delivered to my glass as it should be. Dessert - Hojicha Panna Cotta: 4.5/5 Simple but lovely dessert. I will definitely get this again next time. The taste of the hojicha tea gracefully blended in the panna cotta is everything. It is what I seek in such a restaurant. It was art. All in all, we had a great experience, and we want to come back! But next time, I'll just order every yakitori (on-menu and off-menu) they have and enjoy endless Asahi drafts, finishing with the hojicha panna cotta. That would be the best course for this restaurant.

It’s a really cute restaurant with indoor and covered yard. Food is in relatively small portions so it’s recommended to order multiple and share. The rice and noodles dishes are all pretty good, but nothing stood out. They also didn’t have oden for that day which was a huge bummer.

Really great Japanese izakaya spot in SF. Their plates are quite beautifully presented and the flavors incredibly delicate and refreshing. The one miss of the night was the salted seabass share plate, which just felt very ordinary compared to everything else we had tried. Otherwise, the ambience was lovely and we would definitely come back!

Delicious food, nice ambiance and good service. Great quality ingredients but definitely not cheap. Ordered a few items to sample and share. The skewers were nice, the tofu great, and the sashimi was fresh. Sat next to the soba noodle prep area and chatted with the owner who was prepping and cutting soba, and was so nice to give us a dish to try on the house.

upscale japanese izakaya tucked away in north mission. all of the dishes were well made but nothing stood out or was necessarily top tier. service was friendly. would recommend avoiding being seated in the back room though since it took away from all the ambiance. overall, worth going once but wouldn’t rush to come back. kamo sarada: good salad with nicely smoked duck breast. the pluot & duck combo was surprisingly really good. bluefin sashimi: best dish of the night. the tuna was top tier and fresh with the right amount of fatty. loved the fresh wasabi. chicken sansho yakitori: really enjoyed this dish, chicken cooked well and juicy. chicken karaage: not typical karaage and the first couple pieces were amazing but something you’d need to share since flavor gets a little salty and tiring. udon carbonara: hand pulled noodles were superbly made but overall dish was a little flat. hojicha panna cotta: top tier dessert and second best dish of the night! the hojicha flavor came through and loved the texture.

Really between 3 and 4 stars. This place has a great ambiance and excellent service. The menu was also creative and the sake pairing was fantastic. However, each food dish from the $75 set menu was disappointing to me. The flavors were bland and I was overall disappointed. Would not recommend. Bon Nene is much more delicious!

Arrived on time with a reservation but had to wait an extra 15 minutes to be seated. The hostess was on a personal call when we arrived and chatted with her friend for at least a minute before putting her friend on hold and acknowledging us—not a great first impression. Thankfully, the rest of the evening was much better. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable, and took time to explain each dish. The food was excellent, well-paced, and designed for sharing, which we really enjoyed.

I probably wouldn't come here again. The food was ok but nothing spectacular (or 5 stars worthy). I give it four stars since I'm not considering price rn, but if you are an average diner there was nothing spectacular about the food We've definitely had better Japanese food, but the ambiance is quite cute. The service is good, not great. There is a 20% surcharge already. I left not feeling that satisfied with the dishes we've eaten. We chose a la carte and ordered ~6 izakaya style dishes (for $150) for the 2 of us and none of the dishes stood out. Id probably say the small chicken onion skewer was the best thing we ordered.

We are visiting the SF area, and this place is our first dinner restaurant in town. We didn't try the tasting menu, but instead, we ordered a few Izakaya style dishes. We like the taste of the Oden and Iwashi the most. But we felt the Iwashi was a bit over fried. We also ordered some Yakitori, the meat was soft, but we felt it was less salt and tare source. The varieties of the food are limited and at a higher price. This is very different from our past experience, including in Japan, where izakaya usually has a lot of options and at a relatively cheaper price. The service and the overall atmosphere were average. Not much customer engagement, but simply took the order abs brought the dishes. But 20% service charge was, by default, added to the total bill😒 Reservation is highly recommended as the place does get busy.

Good Japanese food but not the best tasting Japanese food in the city. The nigiri and grilled section of menu are their best offering.

The food was good to great, the sashimi, chicken skewers, and panna cotta were fantastic. Some of the dishes were mediocre though, such as the chicken katsu, the roe entree, and the daikon/sweet potato/fish cake dish. The service was alright. We had a reservation for 7:15 pm and arrived at 7:15 pm but were sat at 7:40 pm. We ordered the set dining menu and as soon as we were served the dessert, we were handed the check and told that the next guests were waiting on our table to be done. I must say I didn’t appreciate that comment, given we were sat a whole 25 minutes after we were supposed to be sat. All in all a decent experience at Rintaro, but not one that lived up to the hype and the cost.

Very cute restaurant for an izakaya-style meal! We started with the tofu, got some skewers, the cheese chicken katsu, and ended with the hojicha panna cotta. The tofu was impressive and tasty. We liked the chicken skin skewers (from the limited odd bits selections) chicken oysters skewers, and minced chicken skewers (dipped in raw egg). The chicken had a great amount of juiciness and flavours but we really wish they had more niche options like gizzard and hearts. The katsu was pretty good but I’ve definitely had much better elsewhere. The hojicha panna cotta was a great dessert to end the meal. Overall great atmosphere and service, and we got to see the cooking process with our bar seats.

Great Izakaya for date night! I would recommend the chrysanthemum greens with duck and the sardines, paired with a fantastic sake that was recommended by our server. Absolutely loved with hojicha dessert and would come back for that alone.

first off, id come here for special occasions or to impress people from out of town. the vibes are really cozy and you can walk in if you’re early. i’d say the menu isn’t super inventive, more humble and everything was executed ok. i thought the tasting menu wasn’t worth it, personally would just order a la carte. the udon was handmade but not really springy. the sashimi cuts were not generous and the uni wasn’t super sweet, but a lot of locally caught fish which was neat. fave part was the appetizer and dessert!

We were excited to try Rintaro after hearing good things about it. We frequently visit Japan, so we have developed a more established palate of what original Japanese food tastes like. Hence, we tempered our expectations. The food was good, but there was no "wow" factor. We liked the katsu, yakitori, and the udon the best. I would skip the sashimi; the sashimi was pretty expensive and yet tasteless...Ambience was great, we liked the interior. Overall, some of their dishes are great and worth a revisit. However, given the price, I would have expected a bit more.

Yosedofu - Excellent texture, very flavorful and refreshing soy bean flavor. Suggest using few drops of sauce, cause it's very concentrate. San Ten Mori - very fresh. The fresh wasabi was awesome. Blue fin tuna was excellent. The halibut was so sweet. Amazing. Chicken thigh yakitori - Very interesting marinate. Strong flavor taste like mosquito spray. Minced chicken meat - Very fluffy, soft and tender. Best yakitori here. Chicken tender grill - This one is ok. Much lighter flavor. Grilled mushroom - The sauce is flavorful. Good. Kurobata Tonkatsu - That's the surprised dish of the night. Very tender, juicy and flavorful. Must Tomorokoshi Satsumaage - Very good dashi. Flavorful. Fish ball has nice texture Kama Tama udon - interesting flavor. It's like a dry udon with some sauce. Tomorokoshi udon - The corn fritter was very good. The udon texture was also very Al dente. Excellent. Service was very good. Courteous and professional.

The interior design matches well with the lighting, forming an authentic, vibrant atmosphere. Every service worker we interacted with at Rintaro was attentive and friendly. The dishes we tried out were a mix of qualities. The sashimi was top grade. The fish was visibly fresh, savory and the pieces were perfectly sized. The charcoal grilled skewers and udon were slightly underwhelming. Simply put, there are alternatives we’ve tasted previously that were more outstanding. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Rintaro.

Got the fall set menu. Might have had too high of expectation due to the raving reviews. Nothing new or exceptionally well done expect the hojicha panna cotta which was the only thing that blew me away. Plus for the price point expected more.

I have had fond memories of dining at Rintaro over the years, but have to say our recent experience was sub par. We were there on the early side of a Thursday night (before 6pm), and already had to wait quite a bit, e.g. like 20-25 min to get our drinks (after our food came, and one of the drinks being beer in a can). Even though the table should be reserved for 1.75 hours for a party of 2 (according for Resy), we were asked repeatedly by our server if we have finished putting in orders as things could take a while. This was not the izakaya vibe I was hoping for and the whole meal just felt rushed. The deluxe sashimi we had was beautiful and delicious. But the order of food service really could be improved, e.g. we had to wait around for a while after finishing our sashimi before our croquettes arrived. Overall food quality is ok for the price; restaurant operation and service could be improved to enhance overall experience.

Overall a fun and interesting experience. Of got 8 dishes we got, there were a handful that were just okay / underwhelming, which did leave me feeling a bit unfulfilled afterwards. Beautiful space though. I would recommend 1. the salad with duck (Shungiku Kamo Sarada), 2. The grilled minced chicken yakitori (Tsukune), 3. Grilled mushroom yakitori (Eringi), 4. And the Udon. Dishes I found underwhelming or underseasoned: the corn + fishcake, Kurobuta Tonkatsu, and Momo Sansho Yakitori.

We tried the tasting menu. The food was okay, though both of the main entrees (you can choose between udon and mapo tofu) seemed to be too basic. However, the courtyard dining atmosphere was lovely

It was challenging to get a reservation at Rintaro before 7pm, but I finally managed to get one at 5pm about one month in advance. Got very lucky with parking across the street. There were about 12 people waiting out front just before they opened for dinner. Evidently half the people were lining up without a reservation, no idea how long it took before they were seated. The space is beautiful. Gorgeous woodworking crafted all throughout the restaurant from the bar, booths, rafter beams, etc. There’s also a really nice patio decked out with plants. Ordering was a relatively lengthy process for four well-traveled foodies. We ordered some sashimi, an assortment of chicken skewers, a large fried fish, and some salad. I scoured the menu for a highball but they only had wine, beer and shochu drinks. I settled on Asahi, the only beer on draft. Was disappointed by the lack of highballs, Japanese whiskey, and extremely limited beer selection. They had bottled Hitachino Red Rice Ale but I prefer the Hefeweizen-esque White Nest Ale to pair with meals. First dishes to come out was the sashimi. The soy sauce was nicely aged and dense. The wasabi freshly grated. The saba (mackerel) was fresh but remarkably plain, with no vinegaring, which is a flavor I normally associate with saba. The hamachi was similar. Then came out the duck salad, which came with a heap of mizuna and thinly sliced stone fruit. The duck had a nice smokiness to it. Decent but simple dish. The gyoza was served with a crunchy layer on top of the dumplings. They were a bit plain and the wrappers lacked thin delicacy of a similar but better version at Ramen Nagi. I was a fan of the Yakitori skewers. The Momo with sansho pepper sauce tingled for quite awhile. It was bursting with flavor and the chicken thigh meet cooked to perfection. The Bonjiri had a bit of the crispiness you get from kawa aka chicken skin but a fatty taste within. The highlight of the meal for me was the Kama Tama Udon. An egg yolk on top of a small mound of fresh udon noodles with a willowy pile of freshly shaved katsuobushi. It had a buttery bonito flavor and the udon noodles had a perfect texture and chewiness. We also ordered a large fried fish that was described by the waiter as totally consumable, bones and all. I found that some of the bones were not as fried and broken down as expected. So I removed some of them to avoid the misfortune of getting fish bones stuck in my throat. The Hojicha Panna Cotta was smooth but a bit plain and the Hojicha syrup was very subtle and didn’t carry much Hojicha flavor. All told, Rintaro had some great Yakitori and a couple of standout dishes such as the Kama Tama Udon. There wasn’t much about the dishes that stood out to me in comparison to Izakayas I’ve been to in Tokyo or even Yakitori Kokko in San Mateo. It was solid but not mindblowing. The lack of highballs, Japanese whiskey and beer selections was disappointing. I will return eventually to try other items on the menu but Rintaro would probably rank in the middle of the pack for dinner recommendations in SF.

I came in with high expectations and left satisfied, though slightly underwhelmed. We opted for the tasting menu at $90 per person. The clear standouts were the black cod and chicken katsu—both beautifully executed and full of flavor. One of our friends, who is dairy-free, was served a substitute chicken karaage that ended up being another highlight, though unfortunately it arrived about 20 minutes after the rest of the table’s dishes because the kitchen initially forgot about the restriction. Service overall was quite slow, which took away from the otherwise strong food. On the positive side, the atmosphere is excellent: the restaurant is divided into three rooms, each distinct yet authentically Japanese in feel. The ceramic plates and pottery also stood out—elegant and clearly high quality, adding to the experience. Overall: The food was good, the setting memorable, and the value reasonable. But service was uneven in my opinion

Finally tried Izakaya Rintaro! Week night dinner at the counter for two. We treated ourselves to the early winter set menu and a bottle of sake which paired nicely with our savory dishes. I left very full, yet not heavy. Staff were attentive the whole time, and I noticed the management runs a tight ship here, all the staff know the menu well along with the drink menu as well. This set menu was $90pp, definitely not a modest dinner. Let me break it down: - first course was the miso cod w/ sunomono. Light and refreshing. I liked the crispy cod skin. Good start but honestly forgettable. - Sashimi was next. Delicious delicious, and the accoutrements were artfully paired. They had fresh grated wasabi, pickled topping, and shiso, and recommended each for the three fish. My favorite was the bluefin tuna. Melt in your mouth quality. - hitokuchi oden was next. Oden is light and warm especially for a cold night so I appreciated it. They have handmade fishcakes which were alright, and my favorite was the daikon anyways. My friend was not a big fan of this one. - yakitori was prepared by the cook right in front of us at the counter so it came out super hot and fresh. It's more of a chicken sausage because they minced the chicken. Solid, can taste the charcoal flavors. - chicken katsu was delicious! Huge portion, I was pleasantly surprised they gave us all that katsu. There's surprise melted cheese inside too, and I thought it added another layer of flavor and texture. Crust was nicely crispy. Did not feel too greasy, the slaw definitely helped. - kake udon was our choice of main. The noodles has a great bite and even though I was already feeling full, I devoured this dish. The onsen egg here was stunningly prepared. Perfect, jammy consistency yet soft and delicate in texture. I'm still pondering how they made that. - dessert was the hojicha panna cotta and wow they did not disappoint. I loved the light hojicha flavors cutting through. The smooth panna cotta texture is so easy to eat, especially to top off a set meal. They also gave us some french pear jellies and meyer lemon jellies. These were nice and tart. My friend was obsessed with the french pear jellies. I was wowed by three of the courses. Enjoyed two others. And could have passed on two.

Got the tasting menu. Food is excellent! Especially the tsukune and katsu. Service leaves a lot to be desired. No checking in at all, wasn't offered a another round of cocktails, we had to flag someone down and when ordered it was forgotten. Will go back and sit at the sushi bar and hope for better service!

Perhaps all of the excitement and anticipation for this place set my expectations way higher than I should have had them coming in. From all the reviews, the targeted (or random) Instagram reels, the influencers and the like, I thought I was going to be transported back to Japan stepping into the restaurant and fighting an insatiable urge to yell “umai!” with the first bite.. The ambiance and decor was nice: the atmosphere is reminiscent of a Japanese izakaya. The service was friendly and attentive. The food.. well, it was fine with some standouts. The sashimi platter was very good: well decorated and fresh cuts of high quality fish. The glazed cod was good— paired with the lightly pickled cucumber salad it provided a tangy refreshing contrast to sweet cod. The yakitori frankly was quite average- on the verge of disappointing even. The negitama was regular white onion instead of green onion (it lacked the sharpness you’d get from the big green leek-like thing), the tare (sauce) wasn’t very prominent so it wasn’t clear if they were going for a tare or a shio (salt) style yakitori. The chicken was perfectly cooked (we tried all the chicken yakitori) but wasn’t particularly flavorful. The pricing was on the high end— pretty expensive frankly for the amount of food we got. 20% service charge as well as a 5% SF Mandate added to the bill. For two people we ended up paying $250 (this is with one drink) all in.

Set menu was good, but definitely not worth its price point. It’s also a really busy place. I got eggshell in my udon but I understand things can be hectic. Standouts were the yellowtail from the sashimi platter, black miso cod, hojicha panna cotta, and the togarashi they used for several of the dishes. Otherwise, everything else was just alright.

This authentic San Francisco Japanese restaurant requires reservations (walk-ins are rare). While the fish croquette was unique and rich, the daikon lacked a strong dashi flavor and was too soft for my taste. The hojicha panna cotta was excellent. Sake presentation could be improved with traditional masu or similar trays. Japanese foods are always total coordinated so

Rintaro offers a unique take on the Japanese Izakaya experience. The beautiful indoor space Includes a bar (made from a single slab of hinoki cedar) that separates guests from the open kitchen. They make their own tofu, umeshu, umeboshi, and other fresh pickles. First things first: reservations are a must. If you don't snag one, you'll be facing their waitlist, and even with a reservation, your entire party needs to be present to be seated. There's no set time limit while you dine, but once you've finished your meal, the table will be needed for eager patrons waiting their turn. Rintaro offers both a tasting menu and an a la carte option, but be aware - the tasting menu is an all-or-nothing affair. Everyone at your table needs to commit to the tasting experience, which is a standard norm at most restaurants that offer a tasting menu. We opted for the a la carte menu. While there were some definite highlights, there were also a few misses that kept the experience from being truly exceptional. Let's start with the high notes. The Sakana Furai (minced yellowtail amberjack and white miso) was the star of the show. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the panko crust achieved a delightful balance of crispiness and lightness. The accompanying Rintaro tartar sauce added a welcome tang. The Hojicha Panna Cotta was another winner. This Japanese toasted green tea panna cotta was light and refreshing, with a subtle tea flavor and a delightfully smooth, almost jelly-like texture that balanced perfectly with the almond cookie. The Yosedofu (freshly-made silken tofu) lived up to its name. It was incredibly silky and jiggly, with a clean flavor that showcased the quality of the ingredients. The Kama Tama Udon (Rintaro hand-rolled udon "carbonara") was also flavorful, with the udon itself boasting a good texture. However, the katsuobushi (shaved bonito flakes) was a bit of a letdown, being chewier than ideal. Unfortunately, some dishes fell short. The Hanetsuki Gyoza (Becker Lane Berkshire pork gyoza with chicken foot jelly and "wings") sounded unique, but in reality, it was just ordinary gyoza. The promised "wings" amounted to a small amount of ground meat and didn't add much to the flavor profile. Similarly, the Yakitori Negima (charcoal-grilled chicken thigh + onion) was surprisingly bland and dry. The Kyuuri chu hai deserves a mention as a well-balanced and refreshing drink. Overall, Rintaro was a 3-star experience. There's definite potential here, with some delicious dishes and a beautiful space. Rintaro might be worth a try, but be sure to manage your expectations.

EXPERIENCE We made reservations for a Wednesday evening at 5:30pm which ran smoothly. The waiters were swift and incredibly hospitable. The interior design of the place was quaint and pleasant, not overly fancy. 4/5 FOOD Kanpachi // In terms of savory dishes this was my favorite in terms of flavor, but also it’s quite low effort in terms of recipe development (technique is another story ofc). The yuzu kosho was the perfect acidic, zingy addition to a simple dish. Although my favorite, the price point was ridiculous- yellowtail cannot possibly be that expensive to source and slice at $26 as an app (see pic for size). 3/5 Yosedofu // Disregarding its steep price ($15) it was just okay, almost disappointing. We were shocked that the tofu was house-made as it tasted nothing short of regular $2 silken tofu at the store except maybe more stale. The sauce and toppings were simple and not price justifiable (grated ginger, shoyu, katsuobushi, scallions). 1/5 Yakitori // We got the tsukune and momo sansho which were satisfying but not remarkable. The flavor combinations were good though, the shoyu with egg yolk ($3 addition!) was good and the sansho seasoning on the side was mild. 3/5 Hanpen // This was shy of satisfactory. The size of the hanpen was small and almost flavorless- I don’t think it soaked up the dashi that much. The texture was pleasant though as it was soft and very slightly chewy, and the dashi was delicious on its own, complex and flavorful yet light. 2/5 Chizu Tori Katsu // The whole time we ate this dish we were regretting ordering it (it was on the set menu and was recommended). The cabbage salad has perfectly sliced but it was incredibly under-dressed with just a thin slather of sesame dressing on top. Only 25% of the cabbage was properly dressed and the rest was air and water with obstacles. The katsu was awful- the cheese added bitterness to the katsu which wasn’t really complemented by anything else. Texturally the cheese also wasn’t viscous enough and immediately spilled out like a bursted XLB, even when the katsu had rested for quite a bit. 1/5 Hojicha Panna Cotta // We both destroyed it- served cold, it was creamy and light yet somehow deeply roasted at the same time. It also wasn’t too sweet and it tasted amazing even without the syrup (the syrup also deserves its own praise though, infused just right with hojicha). The almond cookies were forgettable but the rest of the dessert made up for it. The price is pushing it but it truly is amazing. 5/5 OTHER It almost seemed like they were overstaffed (might be because it was a Wednesday) as we noticed a lot of waiters standing around and waiting (not waiting tables waiting), which was interesting. Not mentioned: We ordered 2 drinks, the yuzu and ume cocktails. They were refreshing and delicious but not remarkable for their prices ($14 for a 2-ingredient cocktail is a bit much). Our expectations were quite high coming here due to all the raves and awards and the fact that they have their own cookbook. Unfortunately we were overall disappointed as our bill came out to be shy of $100 per person, and none of the dishes (except maybe the dessert) were mind blowing. Overpriced and overhyped but good. Nice spot to go once in a lifetime but never again unless you want an amazing panna cotta for $12. You could make a lot of the dishes at home, and possibly better, for a lot less.

Wanted to try Rintaro for a while and finally got around to it. It’s quite busy so make sure you get a reservation. The restaurant is very cozy and the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, I found the food to be just okay. Nothing bad but nothing stand out. The fish had a pretty fishy taste and there was a lot of stringy membranes. The chicken skewers were quite Smokey but lacked any other flavors. Our favorite was the hojicha panna cotta. Overall a cute restaurant but just not to my palette and with the above average price and below average portions I personally wouldn’t visit again.

R
Robin Soon

Deeply disappointed. The food was average at best—nothing memorable or worth returning for. What really left a bad taste was the mandatory 20% service fee added to the bill, with no way to opt out—even if the service was lacklustre. It felt like the staff knew they’d get tipped no matter what, so there was little effort made to deliver a good experience. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone who actually values good food and proper service.

R
Rachel

The atmosphere is charming and I appreciated the noise level being pretty low. Food was great but nothing exceptional given the price tag. The value would be way higher with slightly lower prices. Lastly, we got the set menu and the check was dropped on our table before I had even tried the dessert. I understand it's a popular spot and they have other parties to seat, but for a restaurant of this scale that didn't fit the vibe. I just wanted to enjoy my dessert without being rushed to pay and leave, especially given the $250+ we ended up spending

My boyfriend and I went here for a date night. The food is solid but I don’t feel as if it is worth the steep price tag, nothing about it stands out to make it really worth the money. The best dish they had is the udon but it took such a long time to come out and in the end I was already full so I couldn’t eat all of it.

The female host who worked on the evening of February 14 seriously needs to be reconsidered for her position. Honestly, she was the most disappointing host I’ve encountered so far. We were not late for our reservation. Rather, she failed to show up on time. Even after more than 10 minutes had passed since our reservation time, she was nowhere to be found and did not greet us. When she finally appeared, she did not offer any apology or greeting and immediately asked for our name. Her expression and demeanor were far from welcoming. We had not reserved a terrace table, yet she rudely told us that we would have to wait longer if we wanted to sit outside. When we asked for a table, she walked inside without saying she would guide us. When we followed, she placed the menus on the table as if tossing them down and left without saying a word. I believe the host sets the first impression of a restaurant. It was a Valentine’s Day date for us, and her attitude nearly ruined the atmosphere. We genuinely considered leaving because of how rude and unfriendly she was. Thankfully, the quality of the food and the kindness and professionalism of the servers allowed us to stay and finish our meal. To prevent other guests from having a similar experience, I believe appropriate action should be taken regarding this employee.

The food quality was solid, but most of the dishes fell flat in terms of flavor. Unfortunately, the bigger issue was the service, which made the entire experience disappointing. We had a 9:30pm reservation and were seated a little early (which was great). Our server greeted us, and we asked for a few minutes to look over the menu—but she didn’t return for half an hour, taking our order around 10pm. Our sashimi appetizer arrived about 20 minutes later. When ordering, we had asked if we could add Uni to the sashimi, and the server said she’d check. We never heard back until 15 minutes after the sashimi was served, when we were finally told Uni wasn’t available—by then, we had been waiting unnecessarily instead of enjoying the dish. The pacing of the meal was also frustrating. Dishes came out inconsistently, often 15–20 minutes apart. Other staff members brought them out, but our server never checked on us, never asked if we wanted another round of drinks, and then disappeared entirely. Around 11pm, we noticed her leaving in street clothes—apparently she had been cut. That’s not the customer’s problem, but it left us neglected. At some point, a new server took over, but he only brought out our final dish without introducing himself or acknowledging the change. We ordered sashimi, duck salad, oden, two yakitori chicken skewers, tonkatsu, and carbonara—all of which took over two hours to arrive in total. There was no flow to the service, and to make matters worse, we watched guests who arrived after us (and ordered similar amounts of food) finish their meals and leave while we were still waiting on dishes. This was an awful experience and we will not be returning

They took off some of the popular item to be set menu only. There is many DON’T in the restaurant and the whole dining experience felt rushed. The waiter reminded us multiple times we have to get the order started or it will eat into our dining time… Then we waited very long between each dish… The value is extremely poor. We paid around $200 for a meal we could get under $100 in anywhere else in the Bay Area.

I’ll start off by saying this place adds an automatic 20% service fee to your bill so the waiters have no incentive to give you good service and today we experienced that. We were also seated 20 mins after our reservation time even though we were right on time. No checking in with how our food is, no offering us another drink for order, no water refill, no checking in on if we want to order more food - it took us multiple different times of having to make eye contact with the waitress in order to get her to come by. The waitress seemed out of it and no one was helping her pick up the slack. Food was good but a little underwhelming. The reviews sold it to be a lot better than how the food was, especially the sashimi. I won’t be back, I would say I’m knocking 2 stars for the service.
