Truly Authentic shawerma.. this will be my go-to spot from now on. The Sunset is really blessed to have this historic institution. This shawerma took me “back home” with an instant bite. Fresh ingredients, made on the spot.
Without question some of the best falafel I've had in the city. Perfectly light and crispy outside, with a moist flavorful center. At only $.50 a piece if you get a dozen they're a staggeringly good deal.
Been here many times when we lived in San Francisco….Miraloma Park…Love this little shop…Best Falafel and if your Lucky…”a bakers dozen”….Great creamy classic Hummus made daily…Owner is a nice man..Thank you Sunrise Deli….Highly Recommended
It may not look like much from the outside, but you will not regret going here! The falafel was amazing, perhaps the best I've ever had. Other dishes that the rest of my family got were also very good. We got some baklava to go, and it was also excellent. Service was very friendly; they offered us whole falafel balls as samples. I will be back whenever I'm in that part of the city.
The best falafel in the city is their motto and it’s no joke. This place is a landmark in SF. All fresh ingredients made daily from scratch. A very homely local family owned and operated falafel deli with the comfort food to match. I am a vegetarian so I can not speak to the taste of the meats but I know that it is all Halal and sourced locally as are the rest of their ingredients. I’ve been living in SF since 1999 and have been going here the entire time, and it is always on point! Thank you Sunrise Deli for your years of excellence, hopefully there will be many more to come! 🌞
Unbelievably good falafel! Very inexpensive, quick, and convenient. It's probably my favorite place to eat in the Sunset District. A quaint, no frills restaurant with a little seating area if you don't want food on the go (though there's no way you could resist taking a dozen falafel with you to go!)
Seriously the BEST falafel!! And the chocolate covered havla is delicious. Love this hole in the wall!
Holy cow, this is the best falafel I've ever eaten. I hate when falafel is dry and crumbly — these were melt in your mouth with lots of flavor. Relatively inexpensive for SF too.
Best falafel in SF!!!!!!!! Moist, crunchy outside, softer inside, absolutely delicious without even any dips :). Their other food is great too, and they have real Halva and other unique desserts
Best falafel in town no lie and I'll tell you why. Crispy outside, moist and soft inside, pop of flavor from solid base and spices/herbs used, and fresh because they constantly make falafel. That is the star of this restaurant but for meat eaters kibbeh and kufta are my go to. I recommend trying the dips and salads see if they adhere to your taste. Pretty standard recipes they do. A nice addition to make a nourishing meal. I like spicy food so I always like some home made shata, a middle eastern hot sauce. Finally, dessert can be classic baklava or their no added sugar date cookie! So good with a little less guilt. They also make s cookie or gharaba that delicately melts in your mouth.
The shawarma (mixed chicken and lamb for me) and super falafel were very good. Worth trying if you're in the area with a taste for middle eastern cuisine.
I've been eating fast food all week, been craving for a good home cooked meal, found this place, my favorite was chicken kabob w/rise and lentils side of cucumber/tomato salad and pita bread. Just like home made can't wait for my next visit.
Loved this friendly unassuming Mediterranean deli with its classic limited menu of delicious food. We thoroughly enjoyed the falafel, hummus, dolmas, and tomato/cuke salad. The halvah, baklava
My experience eating at Sunrise Deli were delightful. The owner is very generous and so easy to communicate with. I visited the deli/diner for the Falafels and i am overwhelmed by the fluffy, flavorful, and textured Falafels. The deli has 6 tables which accommodate up to 4 individuals. I particularly enjoyed the variety of deserts. The deli is a gem on Irving Street especially if you are near Golden Gate Park. I highly recommend a visit.
It’s definitely a hole in the wall. What you see is what you get. It’s run by one man (very nice and warm) so please be kind and patient - the kufta wrap and falafels are worth it!

Got the shawarma sandwich and it was amazing! Loved the ratio of the sauces, salad and meat. The meat was made fresh to order and was lean. I would come back for sure! They also have a food truck that comes to the sunday market on sunset blvd. Try them out :) I tried their falafel sandwich at the market and it was so good!
Very excellent food! Lots of vegan items and several middle eastern dishes I’ve never tried or even heard of, but all were delicious. Savory and less spicy.
I’ve ordered it for delivery and gotten take out at the location. I got the basic falafel wrap and a side of pita and hummus. The wrap was excellent, with an ideal ratio of pickled vegetables, hummus, falafel and lavash. The falafel, as other reviewers have already stated, is excellent. I’d go as far to say this is the best falafel I’ve had in the city. I left wishing I could have gotten more; the salads and desserts look awesome too. I can’t wait to have this next time I’m in the neighborhood!
I ordered from their food truck a couple days ago during the Bhangra Night Market event. The person taking my order provided excellent customer service and was patient with me while I ordered. Really delicious food too! The falafel was so good and I loved the hummus as well. Highly recommend.
It is literally best falafel I’ve had in the US. There’s only one warm elderly gentleman billing and cooking the food so you need to be patient. But the food is worth waiting. Highly recommend! You can’t go wrong. Don’t come here for the service/ atmosphere, come here for the delicious food.
Like a lot of other reviews have said, this is my favorite falafel in sf and maybe ever. It's nice and crispy outside and really flavorful, moist and soft inside. It's got the nice greenish color too. Super legit Mediterranean place that's by far the best in the area!
Best falafel in San Francisco, I can't stop eating it. It's so yummy. Their other food is great too. I've had the falafel pita and some baklava. Definitely on my 'to-return' list of restaurants. And the owner is super nice.

Great shawarma and friendly service! The place has a grungy-ish feel to it (for example the bathroom is directly through the kitchen and there's no sink in the room) but friendly service and quality food makes up for it - in a way, the feel of the place only adds to the charm.
Best falafel in town. Since five years I posted this remark, I want to add that since then, almost every two weeks, I buy two dozens of falafel, I eat couple while driving back home then keep the rest in the freezer in glass container. When i like to have falafel for breakfast, I take few and put them in the toaster oven for 12 minutes at 375 degrees, they come out as if fried fresh. Still the Great breakfast .....!
A great meal at a good price in a spot that could use a bit of freshening up. Don't let that stop you from enjoying some great middle eastern food for both carnivores and vegans. Street parking is usually abundant within a block or so. Go, enjoy, and bring your family and friends.
Reinforcing my belief that hole-in-the-wall delis are where you most often find the best surprises, Sunrise was fantastic. My family and I, all overly critical when it comes to food, ordered a small plate each - one chicken souvlaki, two lamb souvlaki, and a veggie platter. Though the chicken and the lamb were filling and good, the veggie platter was amazing. The falafel was neither mushy nor hard, as it often is, but really crisp, moist and flavorful and described by someone in our party as "the best falafel I have ever had." All of us agreed and we ordered another half dozen pieces - happily downing them them with only a smear of their tasty hummus. ... and the dude working the counter was really great, suggesting that we try a little of this and that. We walked away with a powdery little rainbow of Turkish delight and an extra serving of falafel for later. Go. Enjoy.
This is a no frills place serving up great tasting food. I got a chicken gyro that was definitely worth coming back for when in the area. The owner is incredibly friendly and told me it’s been in business since 1984! Come support this local business if you’re nearby, he won’t disappoint! Great pricing as well.
This place is a solid 3.84 and the interior is decorated in a 'hole in the wall' facade. Located on the south side of Irving St. between 22nd and 23rd Avenue, this is the definition of a no frills joint. Service was quick. We ordered a kufta kebob (lamb/beef) plate, chicken kabob plate and a greek salad with chicken. My wife gave the salad a 3.7, I gave the kufta dish a solid 4 (we saved the last plate for later). All in all a decent meal, felt clean after eating it (food was not greasy). Would recommend, we'll be visiting again in the future. Parking on Irving can be an issue, depending on the time of day.

Nice guys. Great Falafel. No fuss
The falafel here is really good if you can get them fresh and piping hot. They've got a crunchy crust, and the inside is soft and moist. The herbs and spices make them really flavorful, and they use enough sesame seeds to give it that toasty nuttiness. The taste is a good mix of saltiness, zest, and spice. For less than $6 for a dozen, I think they're priced pretty well too.

I have been coming here for years. They still make the best falafel but its not as good as it use to be. The hummus is too sour for my taste, maybe too much lemon? I use to love the Koufte but the recipe changed too and is not add good. So disappointed😕
Sunrise Deli has delicious food. This was one of my 'go to' places for really tasty food. However they have gotten really stingy with the portions and raised the prices, $1 each for a falafel?!?!! Are you kidding me?! Just the other day ordered veggie combo plate, the plate was the size of regular bread and butter plate. The portions were very skimpy. Left here feeling like I had a snack instead of a meal. A real shame, this place used to be great.
The Falafel was crunchy and the wrap tasted good too. However, I thought the wrap was too dry and needed a hint of sweet. The place smells heavily of oil and it felt difficult to breathe.
Do not order delivery. Everything arrived cold. Dolmas where cold like they came out of a refrigerator and tasted sour. The lamb was super dry and the pita bread was covered in flour. I like Mediterranean food, but this food honestly stunk. The hummas was decent and my wife loved the cucumber salad, but everything else was par at best.
Got a falafel wrap and 1/2 doz of falafels Everything was cold. Old man who was working didn’t even want to be there was kind of rude. Too bad this place was really hyped up by my friends. Food was okay.
Place needs some cleaning and better service food will be better if prep at the moment not heater up.
I used to go to SunrisebDeli all the time. So, I was excited to go there after being away from home in San Francisco for over 20 years there used to be an older lady that ran the place, and she was always so nice to me and my best friend, we even took pictures with her, which I still have. However, the man working there now is really gruff and unfriendly. He looked like my daughter and I were bothering him for being there. We ordered spinach triangle and it was a little stale. The falafel looked really good, but we were not that hungry.

Bland, watery expensive hummus. Tasted like pureed beans, tahini and mildly salted water. No seasoning whatsoever! I realize some people like their hummus bland and Sunrise Deli does a bang-up job there! The falafel is good here though as well as the kofta plate.
The falafel is quite good, if a bit salty, and the scharwma is edible. Can't say the same for the hummus or tabouleh. I make much better hummus and tabouleh than they do, and so can you. I really don't mind that the place is a hole in the wall and not that clean. I love Middle Eastern food, and this place is in my neighborhood. Nevertheless, I've more or less written it off and can't recommend it.
Dingy, dirty, greasy. I love Middle Eastern food, but this place was gross. The entire establishment is FILTHY. Greasy hand prints on the front door, table tops that are not wiped down, decrepit bathroom in the back. The food was bland and cheap (in quality, not price!) Everything about this place is old and sad. I gave them 2 stars instead of 1 because I was pleasantly surprised I didn’t get sick from the food.
Would not recommend this place. I got a chicken shawarma, and it didn’t seem authentic or fresh, and did not taste good. Shawarma should be nice and hot with fresh pickled turnips, this was soggy with limp pickles and veggies lacking flavor. Many better places in SF and the bay for similar food.
Just moved into the neighborhood so was giving them a try. We got a lamb plate to go. The portion is so small. No veggies no rice; just some sauce, passable amounts of meat, and a thin pita bread. Would not recommend and would not go back... Decent flavor but just doesn't justify the price tag....
Expensive bland liquidy hummus. Tasted like puréed tahini, beans and salt water. I don't even like spicy or overly seasoned hummus and this stuff was *very* subpar and bland. The falafels are good here, koftas are decent, baklava is hit or miss and way overpriced.

Totally dissatisfied coming from Chicago where the shawarma is great. This was quite possibly the worse I've had. It was lacking flavor and the lamb was tougher than ever. Maybe they were off on 9/27/18. Terrible.
Place is in a need of a deep cleaning. This was by far the worst Chicken shawarma of the world. Cold chicken warmed up in a toaster oven. The Gyro machine has not been used in centuries. Don’t look at the grill! It’s been a while since it’s been cleaned.
I had the lamb Shawarma plate and it had ludicrously small portions, overcooked meat, and was generally tasteless. Certainly not worth $15- Sajj Mediterranean is way better
The owner (who is also the food preparer) served us cold and a few hours old falafels which he did not sell during rush hour. We did not push back because we were traveling and we had a very limited time. It broke my heart that we were served cold food even though we paid in the current currency… we would have been okay had we paid through ancient barter system… Falafels are really good. Custoner service is garbage.
I would pass by this place every time I got a bite ot drink on Irving. At first glance, this place looked a bit grungy and low-key. I don't mind that, but when I ordered the small Shawarma Plate for $9, I did not expect it to be so small. The hummus lacked flavor and the chicken was dry. I have never been so disappointed by a restaurant before, especially with so many good Asian options nearby for the similar or even lower prices. I do not recommend this restaurant, though I hear the falafel is good here.
This place use to be good. Not anymore overpriced undercooked falafel the worst I have had lacking flavor and seasoning. Advice stay away. Location also filthy yuk. Save your time and money
I recently visited this longstanding establishment, but my experience was profoundly disappointing. Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the filth. The walls were covered in grease, which even dripped down a decorative picture. The restaurant was cluttered with supplies in an unorganized manner. There was no greeting or acknowledgment from the staff. When an employee finally did address me, it was with a nasty attitude and an aggressive tone, making me feel unwelcome. Despite my initial reservations about the state of the restaurant and its lack of patrons on a typically busy day, I decided to stay. Unfortunately, the food did not redeem the experience. The oil used for frying was clearly dirty and old, which was evident in the taste of the falafel. The falafel itself was disgusting, a far cry from what I expected. As an Arab and a Palestinian, I was particularly disheartened. This restaurant is a disservice to our cuisine and culture. It's baffling to me how this place remains in business and doesn't have more negative reviews. I cannot recommend it to anyone seeking quality Middle Eastern food.
