I understand why this place has been around for as long as it has. An absolute must visit whether visiting SF or a local. The restaurant was extremely busy but thankfully we had a reservation. Service was prompt and friendly. The menu can be a little overwhelming (so many delicious sounding options) but our server went over it with us and helped us pick out some dishes. The dishes we got were all incredible. It was hard to pick a favourite. The crab cake had so much crab and very little filler. The outside was perfectly crisp. The oysters rockefeller were packed with filling which was delicious and perfectly seasoned. The crab and prawn à la monza was packed with crab. There was truly more crab than there was rice which was very impressive. The sea bass was perfectly cooked. Our server even brought some extra sauce to go with the sea bass near the end of the meal when all of the sauce had been eaten up. Some of the best seafood I’ve had in a very long time. We also ordered a bottle of wine which paired very well with our meal.
If ever a time I needed 6 stars, this would be it. I’ve always loved this restaurant, and it never ever disappoints. Super old school, waiters dressed in white, cozy little tables … and the food … AMAZING!!! Our waiter was the best waiter I have ever had at a restaurant, entertaining, attentive, great with recommendations. We didn’t know which clam chowder to get, so he brought us a cup of each. Then we ordered the crab cakes and the sea bass. My friend said the rice was the best she’s ever had … I thought it was good but for me rice is rice. The crab cakes melted in your mouth, so yummy!!! This place is a must!!!
Flawless crab cakes! Drinks ...tasty and very effective ! Staff personality, Hilarious and on point. We asked: "What is the host yelling to the back?" The staff was ready "Oh him? Not sure its Croation.". Hmmmm? Call; "Codanyruum!?" Response. "Nooooo!". Lol fun folks, you get it after the third or 4th time.
Unbelievably cool place for delicious seafood. They're celebrating their 176th year in business!! (It opened in 1849). The tadich platter is a great sampling of everything and the oysters Rockefeller were amazing. For mains, we had the Ciopinno, crab cakes and the Chilean sea bass. It was all very, very good. The atmosphere is historically old school and worth the visit.
The oldest seafood place in SF. The place felt like you walked in the 59s, 60s style restaurant vibe. With pics of the good old days and the waitstaff wearing old style white serving uniform and there is the bar right upon you walk in and tables throughout the place. Great service by all, the foods are great, big and delicious, old style of course. The prices can be in the high end but worth it. Parking can be tough since most are street parking, we came early so we got spot right across the place but they do have valid parking (I believe). We ate all of what we ordered and that is a lot for 3 people. Glad that we stopped by and checked it out, it was on my bucket list of places to eat in SF.
Walking back in time with this exquisite restaurant with old school charm! The service was second to none! Brian S. was along and made the night extra special. Yes the Sidecar was rhe best ever (touted in the cocktail menu) Oysters awesome, clamp chowder amazing and thick and flavorful. Sole stuffed with crab and shrimp a la Newburg and Seafood Sautéed simple Devine. Oldest restaurant in California. Highly recommend. Get reservations.
We had an amazing dinner at Tadich Grill, our server James made sure we had everything we needed and gave us good recommendations, the Tadich platter is a must try. Something we really appreciate is we never felt rushed as you are in other restaurants in the city, so we could really take our time and enjoy our dinner. We’ll be back soon.
Great experience! From the friendly greeting upon entry to being seated quickly. A great place to people watch and indulge. Strong cocktails and flavorful food! An old school vibe when it comes to service, something that is greatly appreciated! Have the bread ! Try thr wine and ask for a taste! Fresh scallops dish was outstanding and not overly salty( had it twice ). Steak potatoes entree was flavorful and delicious. Will be back for a third time ! They can accommodate walk-in’s which is fun at the bar!

Had a great meal at Tadish Grill! The oysters were fresh, the cocktails were top-notch, and both the grilled dishes and pasta were really tasty. Everything was well-seasoned and cooked just right. The service was also excellent! super friendly and attentive staff. Definitely a place I’d come back to!

Serving San Franciscans and Visitors Since 1849 — The Original “Cold Day Restaurant” Some time in 1849, three Croatian immigrants set up a simple tent on Clay Street near the waterfront and called it a coffee stand. Eighteen years later, John Tadich purchased the small eatery and put his name on it. After the 1906 earthquake, the restaurant relocated—and after a few additional moves—eventually landed at its current home at 240 California Street, where it continues to welcome regulars, newcomers, and tourists alike. In 1934, Tom Buich and his brothers bought the restaurant from Tadich, and the Buich family remains at the helm to this day. Tadich Grill is widely considered the oldest continuously operating restaurant in California, and stepping inside feels like entering a preserved piece of San Francisco’s culinary history. The fresh local seafood is still cooked over a mesquite charcoal broiler, giving many dishes that signature smoky aroma. In addition to seafood, the menu continues to offer stews, casseroles, and classic meat dishes that have been part of Tadich’s backbone for nearly a century. And now, let’s talk about the real reason I keep returning. I’m not going to beat around the bush: I come here for the Cioppino. Every single visit, I tell myself, “Try something different this time,” and occasionally I do—but ultimately it's the Cioppino that calls me back. This is their signature dish, and it arrives in a generous, steaming bowl filled with all the goodness you could hope for: scallops, clams, shrimp, mussels, white fish… and more. All of it swims in a rich, tomato-based broth that is dangerously addictive. Dip a piece of sourdough into that sauce, let it soak, close your eyes, and just let your taste buds do the talking. My second favorite dish is their fried calamari, but the portions are big, so I only indulge when I have a hungry friend or two with me. Over the years, I’ve been tempted to try their Lamb Roast or even the Beef Tongue, but somehow I always circle back to seafood, and almost always to Cioppino. Some habits are simply too delicious to break. Here’s a tip: If it’s your first visit and you’re dining solo or as a pair, sit at the counter. Strike up a casual conversation with your server. Many of them have worked there for decades and can share stories about Tadich’s history, San Francisco, or the menu itself. It adds an extra layer of charm to an already memorable meal. And if you somehow still have room at the end, I highly recommend the Bourbon Bread Pudding with a cup of coffee (or tea). It’s the perfect finish to a hearty, satisfying meal. Oh—and don’t forget to read the short history on the front page of the menu. It’s a fun and quick way to appreciate just how much this iconic restaurant has seen over the last 175+ years.
The best part of Tadich Grill is their historic story, founded in 1849. Just walk by, see the place and dine elsewhere. It is incredibly noisy. My party of 7 sat in one of their "private" booths but we could barely carry on a conversation. One can call the restaurant appearance classic or just worn. Our server looked like he'd been there for years--servers appeared to all be male and 50+. But there was no hospitality or joy or pride in his interactions. Service made it feel like a cafeteria but food did not come out in a steady stream so some items sat on the table and cooled while we waited for all to be served. Four of us ordered their Cioppino, identified as a house speciality by the waiter. It was just okay. Tomato broth with the odd seafood remnants, it seemed and was less a dedicated recipe. On my very last bite I tasted a rancid/spoiled bite of something. I held things together but barely. Others ordered crab cakes. A multi item fried seafood platter. A salad w shrimp. I don't think anyone just raved about their meal. Maybe it was just not the night for us. I seldom offer a negative review. San Francisco has many great restaurant options. This was a meal to remember but not for the right reasons.
Tadich grill found it on Google. Wanted to check out the oldest restaurant in California able to walk in on a Saturday night about six got a table in 10 minutes. The atmosphere and ambience is unique and a great experience. Service is very good. We ordered a fire grilled halibut steak and prime rib. The food unfortunately was just OK. I will give props to the cheesecake. Excellent slice.
We had the crab louie salad, cioppino and petrol sole. The crab louie salad and cioppino were excellent. The petrole sole lacked flavor.

This place is resting on it’s laurels. Food mediocre. Long wait despite reservations. Arrogant wait staff. Go elsewhere. Lots of great restaurants in SF.
Oysters were from the east coast and flavorless. crab cakes had too much sauce which hid the taste of the crab. Accompanying rice and vegetables were overcooked and tired. Waiter thought his beha…
Old time upscale SF haunt. I haven't been there for a few years. We had the mesquite grilled halibut and pan roasted trout with artichoke and creamed spinach sides a cocktail and the bread pudding and chocolate cake. The cocktail was miniscule, the spinach was great, the dipping sauce for the artichoke was atrocious ( a hint of lemon and some flavorless white glop). The halibut was good and the trout had bones and some kond of batter on it. The bread budding was excellent and the chocolate torte was good. Flavor and quality "good" to "middling" but definitely not worth the price. Definitely better places in The City for less cost.
This really is not a place that you go for the food: you go for the history, and the atmosphere and the service. The pan fried fish is always good (lots of butter) the potatoes and green beans are boiled, undercooked and bland (on par with Sam’s Grill); but its a restaurant that you want to continue for your children or grandchildren to enjoy. That’s why you go back: the food is secondary.

First, I’ll start with the food — it was very delicious. However, that does not make up for the clear discomfort the staff seemed to have toward same-sex couples. This isn’t a conclusion I come to lightly, but the difference in service between tables was too obvious to ignore. Our server, Tim, barely stopped by our table compared to the traditionally presenting couple seated directly across from us. From grabbing a drink at the bar with the General Manager, Stephen, to the end of our meal, the lack of engagement and apparent disinterest were impossible to miss. TL;DR: Great food, but the service left much to be desired.
