Vegetarian friendly Izakaya. Good vibe. Good service. Good food. We were there early for dinner. When we left, there were lots of people waiting in line because of the happy hour promotions I believed. If you are looking for a place to chill out with friends or family. This is the place to be. My recommendation dishes are fried tofu n veggie tempura.
I went here for happy hour - their HH items are awesome! I was stunned at the portion of the chicken kaarage and gyoza - all for $5? Insane! The sashimi was amazing too. What a good deal! The vibe inside is very quirky with lots of interesting decoration. The tables are for 2-4 people with one larger table that could probably seat about 6-8. The service as good. I would definitely go here again!
Some delay to being seated and delay from menu to order, but very fast delivery of food from time of order. It was busy with a single server working as fast as they could, it was not for lack of effort. Dishes arrived hot when they should be hot and just at the completion of the dish that was brought before. Chirashi was fresh with generous amount of salmon roe on a bed of well seasoned rice. The amount of rice was proportional to the amount of fish which made it feel that the fish was the focus of the dish. Blistered shishito arrived piping hot with a generous amount of bonito flakes on top. The bonito melted dramatically as the dish sat. The flavor was good with the sweet and salty sauce pairing well with the slight heat from the pepper and bitterness from the right amount of char on its surface. Vegetable tempura and Asahi paired well with the beer cutting through the fried food flavor. The tempura was very light and crisp without being overwhelming. The vegetable flavor predominated without their being a strong oil flavor. Seemed very fresh. Would go again to continue to explore extensive menu.
Really good Japanese fair in a fantastic setting just outside Union Square. A great local spot for a variety of reasonably priced Izakaya style plates. This place is perfect for Japanese food other than sushi even though it’s still on the menu. Highlights were the ox tail, hamachi kama and the calamari. All served in eclectic and vibrant setting. Definitely must revisit. Dos thumbs up 👍👍
After a stressful week at work, we decided to have some really good food on a Friday night and we found Public Izakaya. We ordered three small items to try if the food was good, and it didn’t disappoint us! Then we ended up order more. Our favorite one is the hamachi carpaccio; the fish was very fresh and flavoured with the chef’s special sauce, the best thing ever. I can’t help but screaming in delight. We also ordered the raw oysters, 6 pieces for $15, extremely fresh and reasonably priced. Other foods that we love and will recommend: -Tofu fries (crispy and very yummy, I like the fact that it’s fried tofu cut into strips to bring the texture to the next level), -Hokkaido uni (seasonal and super fresh, truly from Hokkaido, you can taste the difference. Must order if they have.), -Salmon belly sushi (very long and delicious), -shrimp sashimi (fresh and sweet!!), -Sake clams (the soup is hot and satisfying). -yummy beans -hot sake We highly recommend this place and will come back again!
This is a fantastic spot to pop into for some quick eats. The Unagi Don was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The egg was cooked perfectly and the rice crisped up nicely in the hot clay bowl. The house Nigori was tasty and paired well. This place is casual and a good spot to hang out, talk, and drink!
Hands down the best spot in the city for a great dinner - from date night to a big group. Lovely atmosphere, always vibey, diverse playlist, all the Japanese hits on one menu. If you’re looking for a fun sushi dish don’t skip the Truffle Hamachi Carpaccio. Unbeatable Happy Hour menu from 5-6pm & 10-11pm. Excellent service is the standard, Andy’s the best!
Had this place in my favorites for several months and so I had a ton of anticipation leading up to actually trying it today—it totally hit the mark. We got the skewer sampler, the toro roll, and the chirashi don. All 3 were excellent; the skewers were all outstanding! Perfectly grilled and extremely tasty (not to mention harder to find at your typical Japanese restaurant). The ambience was great too—very Japanese and colorful and upbeat. Pretty good value for money for SF, though I might try to come back during the happy hour next time.
Highlight: Incredible Tempura Udon - for $16 (?!?! wow) is an unbelievable deal. I’m visiting from the UK for 4 days and my go to for my first travel dinner is always Asian food because it’s always so vibrant and varied in big cities. I went just after 10pm to take advantage of their 10-11pm happy hour, just a table of 1 so put my name down on the list and waited maybe 10-15mins for a table which I was more than happy to do. I ordered the Tempura Udon because I was obsessed with this dish when I was in Japan over the spring and it really didn’t disappoint. Fantastic portion size, super crispy fresh tempura shrimp and loads of variety in the vegetables. Honestly I was wowed. The noodles were as thick as you would hope with the PERFECT bite consistency. The broth, super rich but very light. On the Happy Hour I got the Karaage and Gyoza which is almost like a combo app with a few pieces of each. HUGE pieces of karaage and the gyoza were still so moist on the inside but super crispy on the outside. For $5?! Insane. Also got a $5 Sapporo because what else is there to drink with deep fried Japanese food? The menu itself was super varied, so many options across so many categories. Sadly didn’t try any of the robata skewers. I had thought I might order some later but honestly the portions were so generous that I couldn’t even finish what I ordered but if you’re going in a group then it’d be great for a nice varied table of dishes Only downside purely circumstantial and nothing on the restaurant whatsoever and was that I ended up being sat in their second room with all other tables in there taken up by quite a large party and after they left it became a bit of a pen for solo diners so it maybe was a bit less atmospheric than I hoped. But I mean… I’ve been in the F&B game for a long time previously so totally understand it’s just how the tables fall sometimes when you’re going to a venue that is so busy and bustling late into the night. If you’re staying in the area and looking for a great late night spot to get your trip started then it’s a no brainer.
Hidden gem! Hard to find Izakaya like this in SF, nice vibe, reasonable price, wide variety of items, not all of them are great but if you order the typical Izakaya food like chicken skin, shishito you will be good. Sukiyaki was very good too - tons of good beef. Generous portion size! Don’t come here just for sushi though - that was mediocre. Next time you find yourself in a crazy long line for Mensho try it here
Chose this izakaya as a lot of other restaurants in the area close early. We're from out of town and this place did not disappoint. We ordered several appetizers, got the American wagyu skewers, and everything was amazing. I ordered the NY strip beef steak teppenyaki, they ran out but the manager asked if I wanted American wagyu as a replacement and at no extra charge. He even added a little extra to my plate. If we're ever back in town, we're definitely coming back. 5 stars, and highly recommend
Great atmosphere with really great food! We just tried this place for the first time and it did not disappoint! We had various ramens and they were all good. We also had the Flaming Toro roll, which was sublime. We are definitely coming back!
Now THIS is about to be one of my go-tos on SF trips. A 10pm happy hour??? Hello!!??? Everything slapped. The wait was ~10min for 1 person which wasn’t too bad. The chicken and mushroom skewers were perfectly seasoned. Perfect! The albacore and hamachi nights were pretty standard. The spicy miso salmon kama was decent, a little fatty for my liking but still solid. The karaage and gyoza barely got a pic I chewed it up so fast. It was so good. I washed it all down with a Okinawa breeze cocktail inside of a pineapple. Finished off with the mango Sanyo. Chefs kiss. These prices are hard to match. I’ll be back.
Delicious food! Good atmosphere. Open late. Amaebi with the fried shrimp heads. What more do you want?
I can’t believe I never wrote a review for this place. Walked in you just feel like you went back to Japan. The decoration inside is so cute. The service was very fast attentive. The food came really fast too, and you can tell that they are fried chicken were freshly fried. We also got a cup of drink and it was also pretty good. They have a good selection of Japanese wine too. The sesame dessert we got at the end was so cool and we really loved it. It truly feels like you went back in Japan and go to Izakaya. I would definitely recommend here.
Coming from San Diego, I had high expectation. The Public Izakaya did NOT disappoint, and if fact, raised the bar. I see myself coming back tomorrow and every time I find myself in the Bay Area. Was feeling sashimi, so went with the best of the best. Staff was as great as the food, and I was lucky enough to be immediately seated. I would recommend this to the most discerning Izakaya fans. Cheers, Public Izakaya.
A pleasant surprise!! We found this place online and decided to check them out. The outside appearances could use drastic improvements. We decided we were going in and we were glad we did. The staff were awesome, friendly, and attentive. They seated us right away. The place was full to capacity. We ordered the Millionares Tonkatsu Ramen, Honey Garlic chicken wings, a Bento Box 🍱, kimchi fried rice, Tuna Roll, and a Shrimp Tempura 🍤 roll. Everything was well prepared and delicious. Be aware that 5% surcharge is added to the check to make sure the employees are taken care of. So be sure to tip. Its deserved. Stop in and try them out, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised!!
Been here a couple times and never disappoints! Quality fish, quick service. Can be tough to get a seat sometimes but worth the wait
Came here with zero expectation for a late night dinner after a flight and left very satisfied. The unagi don was definitely great, but the slices of duck breast were excellent and surprisingly very memorable. Fantastic and kind service.
If you love izakaya style food, this is the place to go! We ordered some specials: the Uni Hand Roll —- which was packed with uni and great for the price, the uni tasted fresh! and the Octopus Lips — soft and chewy and had a smoky taste. For 5$ each they were great to try and taste. As for the meal: we ordered the Korean Fried Chicken, which came out hot and crunchy. Fair warning that the sauces are on the side. The calamari was soft and delicious. Our favorite entree we ordered was the duck which was really soft and delicious. The drinks were great also. Would come back again.
The best Izakaya I've had in the US, maybe even the best Japanese food, certainly for the price. We went in during happy hour and got a bit of everything. Incredibly satisfied!

I find the quality of their ingredients to be really high, I enjoy eating here and taking advantage of their happy hour, the food is really good. This place has a great atmosphere, they really went all out with the interior design, its really fun and creative. The service can sometimes be a bit distracted, because they can get very busy and ever since they had to close and reopen due to someone breaking their gas line to the building (not their fault) I can tell they are trying really hard to regain their footing since they are now a bit understaffed because of it I think this place is a great addition to the neighborhood and hope they have success for a long time
This place is Hella fire! My gf took me here and I got the spicy tonkotsu and it was so good I almost went to heaven I also got the calamari the batter on it was #amazing and it was cooked perfectly in my opinion. Will be returning! If you want amazing ramen with a chill vibe definitely come! here !

Duck breast are cooked perfectly. Salmon teriyaki has great char from the grill and its tasty, its just missing more teriyaki sauce. Sushi is tasty but I wish the rolls weren't so big. Its hard to bite it in half and its even harder to fit it in your mouth when they are whole. Karage was good. I loved the Garlic broccoli.
We came here because my friend was vegetarian and wanted some Ramen. The food was pretty good I’m not sure how the service works but we kept having to go to the front to ask for whatever it was we needed. When I did ask for garlic chilli oil, they gave me sweet and spicy😂 other than that it was pretty good ramen
Decided to go here for dinner with some friends and we loved how cute this place was. We came around 7pm on a friday and we were seated immediately. Some reviews mentioned it can get crowded during peak times. They also stay open late which is convenient. It was a bit difficult getting servers’ attention and some items were pricey for the portion, but everything tasted great and we loved the vibe here. We ordered the skewer sampler, kimchi remix, and garlic noodles with chicken. The sampler was great to try a variety of skewers and split it amongst the 3 of us. The kimchi remix was pretty good with the fluffy egg on top. I really liked the garlic noodles and it came with big chunks of chicken. We also got the yogurt soju cocktail and checked in for the free sapporo beer. The soju cocktail came in a little tea kettle and was a little strong but was still good with the meal. We also ordered the matcha cheesecake but it was such a small slice, we were a little disappointed but the flavor was really rich and had a strong matcha flavor. They also had a wall with little snacks like rice crackers, skittles, mints. Overall, i would go again for drinks. It can get pricey depending on what you get though.
Corner izakaya spot with a large menu to satiate most cravings Happy hour is from 5 - 6PM and 10 - 11PM, everyday. Things they do right: anything fried or grilled. The chicken cartilage had a good crunch to it without being overcooked. The yakitori overall had good charring and texture, but are under seasoned. This place really needs a small bottle of shichimi or white pepper on each table. The nigiri cannot be recommended at the moment. Nothing wrong with the texture of the fish, but the rice is plain. No shari is mixed in so it's essentially unseasoned rice and plain fish. Some dry texture on the rice indicates it's been sitting for at least 10 minutes. It's an excellent value at happy hour and it's worth a try, but keep your expectations around the middle.
Chill place, service is efficient. food was great especially the buttercup sushi. Just don’t get the panna cotta
Came here to try their skewers only to find that they have happy hour everyday at a certain time even on a Sunday. Unexpected and surprisingly affordable. We got a few items on the appetizer lists like the Saba and salmon nigiri and they’re surprisingly fresh without any weird taste or smell. Finished it off with a wagyu naba hotpot which was marbly and tender. Love the attentive service all around. Would come back here again

It was that odd time when restaurants don’t serve food in between lunch and dinner. Went to 3 other places prior to this. Glad that they were serving food. I picked up a small to go order. It was ready right away. It was good but a little heavy on the sauce. Next time I’ll ask for it on the side. Menu looked good. They had some nice cocktails that I want to try. There is also a room in the side that you can book for private parties. Good to have on my list of places if you’re in the area.
Came to try their happy hour. I honestly loved their fried foods and dessert. I just wouldn’t get any of their nigiris or sushi. Its one of biggest ive ever seen, the fish isnt good and it made me queasy. The rice to nigiri ratio is crazy🥴. I ended up not eating the nigiri. In terms of service don’t expect anything special, they just take your order, serve you and give you the bill. No hi, no bye, no thank you and they didn’t even ask why i left a whole tray of nigiri untouched. This place is definitely a spot for affordable fast food or after a night out drinking with friends and nothing is open except this one.
Great food, poor experience. The mushroom appetizer was incredible. The table behind us was extremely loud; to the point that I could not have a conversation with one other person at my table. Nobody checked on us after the food was served until we flagged them down. All of our main dishes were served before the appetizers were brought out. While I was impressed with the food, l would seek out other options because of the experience.
Solid late-night food spot, good for groups to share some drinks and bites. Decor and ambiance were fitting for an izakaya. I especially enjoyed the posters and Japanese figurines. A bit overpriced in my opinion, came out to be around 50pp. Food was decent. I think our favorite was the shishito peppers and the kyoto beers. Huge fan of the kyoto yuzu beer, although it was a bit pricey for a beer bottle but I guess that's the tariffs ruining everything good. Couldn't really taste the spicy scallop as much over the sauce they put on top. Hamachi tasted great. Forgot to grab a picture of the motsunabe but we shared that between two people. It's nice they have the hotpot setup for the table, just wish it was less pricey. Our waitress was not very knowledgeable about the menu unfortunately. I asked if noodles and other veggies came with the nabe other than what was listed in the menu, and she said noodles definitely come and other veggies like broccoli and carrot. But in reality none of that was true. We ended up having to order a side of ramen noodles for the soup. The service was still accommodating and nice but we would have ordered something else if we had known.

Foods were just so so. Mediocre. Ambiance was old. Was having a hard time to find parking on street too. Husband said won’t be returning.
I’m not sure how I’m supposed to enjoy these nigiri without soy sauce and wasabi. Sushi really should come with both by default. Another thing that’s been frustrating is their Uber Eats promotion — I think it’s a buy-one-get-one deal on the Salmon Don. Every time I try to order it, they cancel. If they don’t want people to order the deal, why offer it? That said, I really do love the food here.
Found Public Izakaya off Yelp and had high expectations. We were staying at the Grand Hyatt SF, so it was walking distance. Unfortunately, fell very short. We ordered: 2 happy spoon $9/ea: sea urchin, salmon caviar, hokkaido scallop, with truffle ponzu. Sounded and looked good, but value wise, not worth it 1 calamari giant $16: pretty good, could have been cooked a bit better 1 nigiri sampler $28: ok, nothing too special 1 ikura nigiri $8: value wasn't there, ikura wasn't memorable 1 chicken heart skewer $6: not bad, wish it was hotter 1 chicken gizzard skewer $6: not bad, wish it was hotter 1 american wagyu skewer $10: not bad, wish it was hotter Skewers were not bad, but definitely needed to be hotter. Overall, value-wise, after eating all this, we were still hungry, so value really wasn't here. You can do a Yelp check-in for a free sapporo which is nice. Service is a bit lacking as well. Street parking only.
Not a good experience overall. The wooden spoon smelled like fresh from the soap water and its wet. Nabe was too salty, I suspect they put too much soy sauce in it. Not much service either. The only good ones are the skewers. Not worth the price definitely.
I want to share my impressions of visiting this establishment. I love Asian cuisine, and after seeing the rave reviews, I decided to go in. It was late evening, which was good, since the establishment was still open at that time. The cafe was completely full. We had to wait a long time for someone from the staff to approach us. Then I had to wait the same amount of time until they took my order. I'll say right away that the prices are high, the portions are small. The dishes looked so-so. I didn't like the soup, it's the first time I've seen Asian soup with American chips🤦🏼♀️ I've never seen such a mix. The rolls were made terribly, all different sizes, and fell apart immediately. tempura it was three shrimps. We never received the receipt, so we had to go to the cashier ourselves. The staff was disgusting. Our waiter had a dissatisfied face. I visited this cafe again, but the service was just as terrible. The cafe is not very clean, the shelves with decor are all dusty. I was left with a terrible impression after visiting this establishment.
TLDR: they need to better label their vegetarian items because the items were not vegetarian. We stopped in for a snack and looked at their vegetarian menu. We ordered the vegetarian tempura and the Agadashi tofu. The veggie tempura was nice and lightly fried but when the tofu arrived, I could smell the bonito flakes on it (which are made from fish) and I had to ask them to take it off the menu. We looked at the menu again and realized that there was also a fresh crab salad which is definitely also not vegetarian. They really need to make sure if they are labelling things vegetarian that it is vegetarian

So whats the deal with this place? A and friend and I wanted to try it but after driving over to SF, their lights were off and they didnt seem open. Their Google info said they were open until 2AM on Fridays, we got there looking for parking at 9PM. We tried calling the restaurant but their phone went straight to voicemail. I suppose they dont bother to update their website and hours online 😑 Kind of a waste of time.
I usually don't comment, but this is some really SHITTY food...the fried oysters were super, super aged and (when you bite the outer shell the oyster inside literally drips white gunk). The avocado eel rice is so bad as in the sticky gooey texture and there's bones that will literally prick your throat..the skewers are okay, honestly a 4/10, could eat, but won't recommend. The wagyu (i doubt this part) ramen is salty sweet and greasy at the same time lol it smelled so unauthentic with a taste of premade sauce. The water tastes like dish soap. I told the waiter the food is really bad, she said she'll tell the chef, she spoke to him in cantonese about the situation, no apologies, and did nothing else. Ts some bad service lol. Came with an empty stomach, left with it full of anger..this restaurant ruined my sunday night Overall a 2/10, if you're here for the food, RUN!
I ordered food through Uber, but the order was initially forgotten. When it was eventually delivered, the food arrived cold, soggy, and completely inedible. I was extremely disappointed by the lack of urgency in addressing the situation and the decision to deliver food that was clearly below the proper temperature, posing a food safety concern. Overall, it was a very frustrating and disappointing experience.
I usually don't comment, but this is some really SHITTY food...the fried oysters were super, super aged and (when you bite the outer shell the oyster inside literally drips white gunk).
