Maru Sushi in downtown San Francisco is a great choice if you’re craving fresh, flavorful sushi right in the middle of the city 🍣. Conveniently located near Powell, it’s an easy stop whether you’re exploring downtown or grabbing a meal before heading home 🚇. The sushi is consistently impressive. I tried the Powell and Go-Go rolls, and both are excellent if you enjoy a crispy, satisfying bite 🔥✨. They deliver that perfect crunch without overpowering the flavors. I also ordered the spicy tuna sushi, which was delicious—fresh, well‑seasoned, and with just the right amount of heat 🌶️. The ambiance is a bit outdated, but it has a slow, relaxed feel that actually makes the meal unhurried and comfortable 😌🪑. It’s not modern or trendy, but it creates a calm, low‑key dining experience that works surprisingly well for a casual sushi night. Service was warm and attentive, though there’s still room for improvement in terms of speed and coordination 😊🕒. Even so, the staff’s friendliness adds to the overall experience. Overall, I’d give Maru Sushi a solid 8/10—great sushi, good value, and a place I’d happily return to for another round of rolls ⭐️.
That’s one of my favorite place in San Francisco! Tasty rolls and sushi , I like oysters most of all! My favorite rolls are Cherryblossom. Good stuff! I will come back again)
Great atmosphere, excellent and fast service. Tried the 49ers and was so good and was debating if I should order 2nd one but I know I can’t finish 2 orders 😅
This place is definitely a little on the pricey side, but honestly? It’s so worth it. The sushi is absolutely amazing — super fresh, beautifully prepared, and surprisingly filling (and I say that as a proud foodie who can really eat). Every piece was packed with flavor and the quality was obvious from the first bite. What really stood out, aside from the delicious food, was how spacious it is. Unlike a lot of sushi spots in SF that can feel cramped or crowded, this place has tons of room. There’s a large sushi bar area where you can watch the chefs work their magic, plus plenty of table seating that’s perfect for groups or parties. It’s a great spot if you’re coming with friends, celebrating something, or just want to spread out and enjoy your meal. The service was also on point — super fast, attentive, and really friendly. Even when it got busy, the staff kept things running smoothly and made us feel welcome the whole time. Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but for sushi this fresh and a space this comfortable, I felt like I got great value. I left full, happy, and already planning my next visit. Highly recommend if you’re looking for quality sushi and a great vibe in San Francisco!
Such a nice place for a great sushi dinner! The staff were so attentive and so so nice. The fish was great quality and there are multiple options to choose from! Loved it here!
Love the ambience and the best part is the tasty food. The lady who owns the restaurant was welcoming and treated us like we were in home. Visited few times while staying in the city. My go to place for stir fried noodles and sushi when I visit SFO again
Nice little japanese restaurant by union square. Staff is friendly and food was delicious.
So I came here for a quick lunch. Got chicken karage and a la bamba roll. I really enjoyed all of it. The chicken was crisp and the sauce was good. The roll was super yummy and I could barely taste the cilantro, which was great for me (not a fan). The waitress was super nice and the service was fast, but I did go early afternoon on a weekday. If you need a quick bite I would recommend!
Excellent food, helpful and pleasant staff.
My husband has been here lots of times while traveling for business but this was my first time. They serve wonderfully fresh and delicious fish in a very traditional atmosphere that is lovely. We eat a lot of sushi and sashimi and really appreciate how fresh and beautiful their fish is. I cannot wait to return. I’m not sure what the unfavorable reviews are but suspect people may want a flashier place but this restaurant isn’t about that. It’s about quality and serving beautiful food.
After visiting the best dentist office DSF Dr. joseph in SF. We tried Maru Sushi, it's just one minute away from our dental office. It's not the expensive kind of luxury sushi restaurant. It's more like a 7-11 kind of daily meal sushi restaurant around your house corner in Japan everywhere. The price is very friendly. Service is decent. Food is delicious. Sapporo on tap is superb. I always passing by when I was on a cable car riding the hills. Finally get to try it. Will come back.
Family and I went on a Monday, so the place was almost empty. I ordered the Bento Box w/ 3 items. The portions were just enough to make me satisfied, but not enough to take some to-go. I do not recall which three items I chose, but it is worth noting that you aren't allowed any duplicate items. I also ordered some dragon rolls. A lot of the menu options comes with white rice, salad, and miso soup. The food was delicious. We had a lady serve us and she was very quick to clear our table. I've never seen service that quick. I'd pick up the last sushi roll and she's there to take the plate off our table. I'd finish my miso soup and she's already there to take the bowl. The place was empty, so that could be the reason, but it was still fun to watch. Our table was already cleared before we even paid! I would come back here the next time I come back to San Francisco.
Everytime. I mean every. single. time. I'm in SFO, I always stop at Maru. Awesome fish quality. Pretty varied menu and special fish offerings every now and again.
Delicious dinner combo! A good deal, comes with salad, rice, yummy miso soup for a cold San Francisco night. I chose spicy tuna roll and tofu teriyaki as the main and they were both excellent! Will be back next time we’re in town.
Local small business Dine-in. Great pizza, many menu options with daily specials. We had the shrimp with pene, in onion tomato cream sauce and it was delicious. We also had a 10 inch pizza that was super. Dine local and enjoy!
This was a very typical Italian restaurant (and I mean that in a very positive way). The waiter was cool, the food was great, and my salad had beans. What’s not to love? My wife got the fettuccine with baby clams. My mother got the mushroom burger with fries, and I got the lasagna. Getting through it was a challenge because the positions are huge and they are surprisingly reasonably priced! Really enjoyed our dinner here tonight and would definitely come back. The only thing I don’t like about Uncle Vito’s is I have but one stomach. Haha!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ Uncle Vito’s – Great Food, Classic Vibes (Could Use a Refresh) Uncle Vito’s delivers where it matters most—the food and the service. The pizza was excellent with that perfect crust-to-sauce-to-cheese ratio, and the lasagna was downright delicious—rich, hearty, and satisfying. You can tell they put care into what they serve. Service was quick, friendly, and efficient, even during the dinner rush. It had that classic neighborhood spot energy—welcoming and low-key. That said, the interior could use a bit of an update. It feels a little worn around the edges, but honestly, the food and hospitality more than make up for it. If you're here for great Italian comfort food and an easygoing vibe, Uncle Vito’s is still a strong pick. Would definitely come back.
Lovely experience. We ordered the cheese ravioli pesto and the fettuccine alfredo, and they were really good. It's served with garlic bread. That plus a coke and a house wine glass totalled 43$ -41 if you pay with cash- (july 2025). The service is also great, so a place i really recommend
Great service and the food is yummy and very good portions I highly recommend the cheese ravioli pesto, the lasagna and the calzone!!! Usually is pretty easy to get a table but is small so in busy days... be ready for wait a few minutes, the longest wait that we had was 10 So family friendly
I was looking out the window of my hotel and saw Uncle Vito's from my room. So I figured I would look them up and they had an online ordering system, so I decided that I would get some food from there after work the following day. Glad I did. The best Calzone I have had in years. Like a Jersey/NY Calzone that I am used to. I have lived all over and it is crazy that I finYd the best Calzone in years in downtown San Francisco. Walked in, picked up my order, and told them thank you. Everyone was friendly and the place was packed. Honestly one of the best decisions I have made throughout my business travels. Unc V really hooked it up, I don't go to pizzerias for pizza I go for all the other stuff that comes with a good location. Did not disappoint at all.
This is a cute little Italian pizzeria. The service was quick and excellent. The Mountain pizza was pretty good, just a tad undercooked and the peppers and onions could have been done a little more. The flavor was fantastic though. It’s also right on the cable car line for easy transportation access. Also close to Chinatown.
5/18/22...First time visit. Had delivery to hotel which was FREE! Spaghetti with meat sauce was very good. The fries were ok, but would be better hot as they had cooled because of being delivered. The side salad was very big and good. The fettuccine with pesto, chicken and sun dried tomatoes was good. All in all a good find. Worth the visit.
Food, service & atmosphere were great. We were in the area for 4 days and enjoyed the convenience of a good pizzeria/restaurant within walking distance of our hotel

The pizza at Uncle Vito’s was delicious, it has a crispy base and such tasty ingredients. The size of the pizza is generous.

Fantastic Italian food for (low) prices not normal for San Francisco. We had to wait more than an hour for an available table, but was worthwhile.
Great pizza, the best I have tried. Waiters are so kind and efficient. Maybe you will have to wait for a while but they tell you the approximate time in advance.
Last minute stop and they managed to squeeze us in.. Great place with some fantastic food and wine. Fantastic value for money
Came here for dinner alone for work and they are busy at 9! They could be slightly understaff but they have regulars for sure. The sushi slices are thick! The way I liked it. Overall, great place to have quick dinner.
Very good food but service could use an upgrade. They were nice but slow. The food however made everything worth it. I recommend this place. I will definitely be back.
It’s a decent pizza but the crust is a little soft and not not crispy like some would prefer. We have the Greek pizza which was very salty overall but that might be normal for that style of pizza. They seem to have a big rush around the normal eating times but people still line up and wait it out. Over all the place was full of energy in the visible kitchen, but it’s not loud. Some interesting art on the walls too.
Food was plentiful and delicious. Service was great. We had Lasagna, Fettuccine Siena, Spaghetti Marinara, side salads, Garlic bread and Hawaiian pizza. You get the most bang for your buck with the lasagna as it comes with salad and garlic bread. Everything was delicious!!! Thanks for a great night.

Very casual pizzeria with a decent range. Great waiting staff. It's as basic as it is casual but a nice place for a lighter meal. A shame that they only had the dull boring label beer on offer

We had 2 rolls the Lion king and the scallop baked roll, and the kansu bowl. Everything was delicious. Giving it 3 stars due to the price. Just very pricey. I've had just as good rolls at other places for less $$.
I am mostly docking stars for very lacking bizarre behavior of our server (an older woman), who at first did not seem to understand I wanted to make sure what I order is gluten free. Then, once she understood, said “no” to an item that was gf/or easily customizable not to include any. We had to ask for soy/tamari mixing dish. They did have tamari sauce, but she poured me very little and then put it away from us. In general there was a bit of stinginess going on also with the fish pieces that were cut thinner than we are used to. I am a bit confused about it. I would have paid a bit more if it was a cost issue. Same goes for the ginger… When we ordered she over explained (like an adult talking to a toddler on why we don’t wear our boots to bed at night). It was annoying, and I had to do my best not to take it personally. The music was “interesting” and aimed at some person who thought that music was “rad” in the 90s. At least it wasn’t very loud. The food was itself was what you would expect from a sushi restaurant in SF where there are so many restaurants, that any restaurant who wouldn’t serve good food will have no repeat customers. I will not be a repeat customer. But mostly because there are so many other restaurants to check out
Local pizzeria. Apparently it’s always full. Man I was disappointed by that lasagna. So much sauce with no pasta. Didn’t have any spice to it and the table had no chili flakes, had to steal it from another. The server was way too busy to handle us, even though there were <10 tables. Asked for soda water with fresh lemon, instead got soda water with artificial lime juice. Salad was not good. Canned beans and lettuce. No flavour. Garlic bread tastes stale. Really wanted to love this place, it’s not too expensive, ~23 pp, but nothing blew me away and the service is not great. Better get it to go.
Spaghetti with meat source. When it comes, too much water at bottom and almost no meat.

Food gets one star. We ordered two pizzas and they had to be worse than truck stop fare. Service & atmosphere are the only criteria holding up this review. I mean, how charming is it they’re making fresh pizza dough in the window?!! So disappointing because it’s such an iconic part of the city. It’s always full of people (tourists I suspect) who don’t know any better because this place has basically a five start review… For pizza, venture down the street to Gusto or Del Popolo.
Came in at 21:30. I ordered a small pizza Hawaii and a diet Coke. ICE cubes were made from heavily chlorinated water so the whole drink was barely enjoyable. Pizza came and man this has nothing to do with pizza I know from Napoli or Milano. The dough was to thick, dry. The ham was some cheap generic noname ham. No taste. Cheese was tasteless and no quality Mozzarella. Tomato sauce on the pizza was based on cheap sour tomatoes. No flavor rich Like from Mutti. While eating halfway through my pizza I had to pay while still chewing. Not being asked if I needed anything else or if I want to have the check already, btw I never received a check, the payment terminal was hold in front of my face without any other conversation than "do you need a customer copy of the machine". First and Last Time. Sorry but if you want good pizza and hospitality look further
I've been coming here for decades and I must say the current staff are completely untrained amateurs. I arrived when they open at 5 to order a pizza and was told I had to wait with my glass of wine…

Truly one of the worst pizzas if EVER had! I was expecting AUTHENTIC but this “pizza” was like eating cardboard! The pasta looked slightly better!
My wife and I were visiting from out of town and staying at. Nearby hotel when we found Maru sushi. We were both excited to eat because it was a long day of traveling. We each ordered an entree, I ordered the Chicken Katsu. Each entree comes with a small salad and miso soup which I ate. Then my chicken came out with a bowl of rice, immediately I smelled something off like there was rotten fish or something. I took and bite and it tasted very off. I had my wife try a sample and we agreed it was no good. We had the waiter come over and told her it was bad, so she said she would remove it from the bill. I didn’t order anything else because I was in a time crunch. When the bill arrives, the chicken itself is removed, but they were trying to charge me for the rice bowl I never touched, the salad and miso soup. Now I did have tue salad and miso soup, not knowing the chicken would be bad. We had the soft spoken waitress come back over, who got the manager for us. We asked the manager why charge for the rice bowl I never touched and the other items not knowing the chicken would be bad. We felt that on principle that the entire entree should have been removed because of the rotten chicken. She refused at first because she said that it was our opinion that the chicken was rotten. We argued back that serving us bad chicken was wrong and that the entire entree should have been taken off the bill. After some loud words, the manager does the right thing and removed the soup, salad and rice. It’s the principle of the fact that if I had that chicken, I may have gotten deathly ill. For chicken to smell like that, it would have to be sitting at room temperature for over 24 hours. That’s not acceptable and it can cost someone’s life in the end.
I ordered the spicy chirashi for take out today. The sashimi was not fresh, they used really cheap ingredients and cheap cuts. Even the lettuce the chirashi was served with was wilting. The “spicy sauce” tasted bad, and when I picked up my order the waitress was grumpy about providing me with soy sauce because she said there was already hot sauce provided. I was not given any wasabi. The worst part is that I immediately came down with awful stomach cramps and a bad case of diarrhea after eating my lunch. All this for a $40 lunch. Worst meal ever. Do not dine here.
