Truly one of the best meals we've had in the Bay Area. The tasting menu was fantastic, and worked really well with the sangria and wine. The opening dish was honestly one of our favorites. A huge assortment of delicious bites. Definitely a focus on seafood, but everything was super well executed. The only thing that didn't quite hit for us was the mushroom risotto, which tasted a bit bland. Food was amazing, service was amazing, and the design of the restaurant was really calming and welcoming. Strongly recommended! Would totally come back!

I love Michelin starred restaurants. Not because they are bougie, although they certainly can be, but because of the work. It takes an extraordinary amount of work. It also takes talent, which we all wish we could cultivate through sheer determination, yet we know that at the very foundation there must be a God given gift, whether physical, mental, or spiritual. Then one must layer on business acumen, which is an art form in itself. Add to that the discipline and the work ethic. Artists are rarely born with either, so that too must be learned and earned. Often these chefs begin from humble origins, where little is expected of them and where resources are scarce. That means limited capital, and certainly no angel investors swooping in with blank checks. Those who believe otherwise have watched far too much television; angel investors belong in Dickens novels, not in many real life kitchens. So when you encounter Adega, a Michelin starred restaurant in San Jose’s Little Portugal neighborhood, it feels like entering the triumphant final scene of an underdog film. This is a family business gone right. Adega was founded in 2015 by Carlos and Fernanda Carreira, with their daughter Jessica Carreira and her husband David Costa leading the kitchen. Against the odds, in less than a year Adega became the first and only Portuguese restaurant in the United States to receive a Michelin star. Jessica, just twenty three at the time, became one of the youngest chefs in the world and one of the few women to achieve such an honor. Adega’s ascent was not without setbacks. The restaurant lost its star in 2018, only to regain it in 2021, a testament to resilience and mastery. It closed briefly in 2023, but by November 2024 it reopened in its original Little Portugal space, bringing its star lit artistry back to San Jose. And then, of course, there is the art. The dishes are poetry, rooted in Portuguese tradition and reimagined with precision and grace. Adega is proof that when heritage, discipline, business sense, and artistry collide, greatness is not only possible, it is inevitable. #Adega #SanJose #MichelinStar #PortugueseCuisine #CulinaryExcellence #UnderdogStory #FoodArt #LittlePortugal

Overall, the food was great and we had really good service! The plates are shareable, so make sure that you order 1-2 more to ensure that there's enough food if you're going as a group. Parking is difficult to find, but not impossible. You will need to drive around the neighborhood behind the restaurant to get street parking.

Amazing meal! Excellent service and food. No doubt deserving of their Michelin recognition. Sad to hear they are closing. Will definitely try their sister restaurant and bakery. They truly made my husband's birthday a special one - extra dessert, a glass for a toast and card signed by all staff.

This was one of the best experiences I have had in a while. I loved the food, the presentation, the service and ambiance I had gone there for my birthday celebration and they gave us an extra dessert with champagne and a birthday card signed by all the restaurant employees including the chefs … it was so touching. Overall lovely place. I will highly recommend it. Do try out before they close down for good .

An Unforgettable Birthday Experience at Adega My birthday dinner at Adega on February 16th was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we stepped in, we were welcomed into a warm and elegant atmosphere, setting the tone for an incredible evening. We chose the Tasting Menu, and every dish was a testament to Portuguese culinary excellence. What made it even more special was the complimentary additions of caviar and truffle, which elevated the experience to another level. The starters were absolutely wonderful, especially the sardine, which was packed with flavor and beautifully presented. Each course was thoughtfully crafted, from the Lula (a refreshing squid salad with cilantro sauce) to the Cogumelo, a rich and aromatic mushroom rice that had an optional black truffle upgrade. The Peixe, a perfectly cooked swordfish with a delicate white wine dill sauce, was another highlight, and the Leitão, a suckling pig dish with sweet potato, orange, and collard greens, was cooked to perfection, achieving the perfect balance of crispy skin and tender, flavorful meat. To complement our meal, we selected the Cabriz Vinho Rosé, which paired beautifully with the variety of flavors throughout the tasting. While Adega offers three levels of wine pairings (regular, premium, and reserve), we opted to enjoy just this rosé, along with some expertly crafted cocktails, and we couldn’t have been happier with our choices. The cheese course, Queijo, featured São Jorge cheese in five unique presentations, and our evening ended on a high note with the Frutos Silvestres, a matcha meringue “mille-feuille” with white chocolate, raspberries, and green strawberries—a truly delightful and creative dessert. Beyond the impeccable food and wine, what truly set this experience apart was the flawless service. The team at Adega was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about delivering an unforgettable experience. A special thank you to Chef David Acosta and the owners for curating such a unique and memorable dining experience. Adega is a true gem, and we are already looking forward to returning! Highly recommended!

We ate at Adega two years ago when they offered an a la cart menu and decided to come back for the chef's tasting menu last night. It was a great experience and the food was delicious. You definitely won't be leaving hungry. Lots of unique dishes - highly recommend their spring menu. I also got the flight of sangria because I couldn't decide which one to get and I was so glad I got them all!

It's a pleasurable experience. High dining in the South Bay, without a long commute. Wines were very interesting, all from Portugal. The flow of courses was well organized and prompt, we weren't rushed and service was not slow - just right. Adega did not disappoint. Definitely a repeat on special occasions.

Easily one of the best prefixed menu experiences in the bay area. Great wagyu preparation alongside comforting mains. Super tasty bites and desserts were beautifully presented. Stunning Portuguese wine list. Somm helped us taste several to find the right wine. Amazing service & generous chef.

This restaurant is definitely an unexpected surprise. For years, I had heard legends that this restaurant existed. But I never had a reason to go there until this year. I was amazed. More people should experienced this. I know at one point they had a Michelin star and then when they closed down that went away. I hope they get it back. It is definitely worthy. The neighborhood has a lot of character, but this restaurant is the Crown Jewel. Parking in the back of the restaurant was not difficult because we had an early reservation. The courses came out evenly and consistently, and we're all presented extremely well. The staff were all very well trained and knew how to operate a fine dining establishment. The food was all delicious and fresh. Each course had unique flavors that were amazing. If you're looking for a fine dining establishment for a special occasion, this is it.

The Good: The food and service were excellent. Each dish was unique, with diverse flavors and beautiful plating. The portions were generousmy wife and I were completely full by the end of the course meal. We also received complimentary appetizers and dessert from the chef, which added a special touch and included items not listed on the menu. The staff was very friendly and attentive throughout the evening. The Bad: The atmosphere didn’t match the $450+ price tag. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt underwhelming. The parking area in the back of the resturant which was dark and unwelcome , the restaurant exterior resembled a medical office more than a fine dining establishment. The waiting area was dull, with an unattended bar that gave off a strange vibe. The main dining room felt very basic simple tables and chairs, minimal decor, and poor acoustics. Even with relatively quiet neighbors, it was hard to hear the background music. Overall, it lacked the ambiance and immersive experience I would expect at this price point. Overall the food worth it , but the atmosphere of fine dinning should improve.

A great Portuguese restaurant in the Little Portugal area of San Jose, serving tapas style small dishes meant to be shared with friends and family. The location used to be the Adega restaurant and has very tasteful decor. The staff were all vert friendly and helpful. We sampled many small dishes and all were very unique and delicious. The seafood rice, shrimp in garlic sauce, sautéed vegetables, and the banana bread pudding dessert were some of the standout dishes. Even the house wheat bread was unexpectedly good and we used it to soak up the garlic sauce from the shrimp dish. However, serving sizes of most of the dishes were smaller than expected, especially the seafood rice that came with a $39 price tag. Other than that, everything else was perfect. Overall a good place to try Portuguese food, which is quite unique, and distinct from Spanish tapas.

A very nice decor restaurant, the 🍸🍹 Lisboeta taste so good. I liked the portion of their dishes, not too big for one person, and not too shy if sharing between two. In general the cooking is fine, the vegetables, sauteed kind of impressive, full of flavors, cooked perfectly. The beef tongue in tomato sauce a little disappointed, beef tongue cooked fine, but tomato sauce kind of tasteless. Overall, enjoyed lunch, and surely will go back some other time.

This is a long overdue post, so much so that they rebranded from Adega to Petiscos early this year. Serves me right for waiting so long and not asking the waiters for updates 😅 Adega served everything from what you would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. And the seafood and desserts were flavorful and delicious, I believe the chef team is the same. As for Petiscos, the scallops and octopus were grilled to perfection and the desserts were delicious, especially the pastel de nata. We’ve also been to the downtown location, which also has a casual vibe, compared to their previous restaurant Adega, serving more tapas, but nevertheless delicious.

My family and I had a delicious lunch here! We’re not familiar with Portuguese food so we ordered what looked good. We started with the cheese bread, flamed chouriço, and blood sausage. The cheese bread was so cheese and had a nice bounce in texture. The choiriço was literally served in flames and had a really nice smoky texture. The blood sausage was absolutely delicious! It was savory with a crisp edges. That was a highlight from that round. The next round of plates included sautéed veggies, shrimp bread porridge, and duck rice. The duck rice was labeled as a popular choice and I can see why. It is rich with duck fat and the rice crisped up really well in its cast iron skillet. I definitely recommend it. And don’t sleep on the veggies! They were also charred nicely and the balsamic reduction gave it a nice sweetness, balanced with acidity. The shrimp bread porridge was full of shrimp and chucks of soft bread that soaked up the slightly garlicky sauce really well. Other dishes include the mussels and the cod casserole. I don’t like mussels so I can’t comment on that. The cod was interesting. I’ve never had a fish like that before and the only reason I wanted to try it was because Trader Joe’s has a version of it. I found it to be salty for my taste, but perhaps that’s how it should be. My dad commented that the cod and the shrimp would’ve worked well with a glass of wine. But he was driving and I didn’t want alcohol, so that’s something we missed out on. We didn’t get dessert because we went to their pastry store in downtown San Jose to get tarts and malasadas. But the tarts are available here. Service was fantastic! They explained the menu and the food came out at a good pace. And it’s really well decorated inside! Lunch is casual so you don’t need to dress up, but do look presentable. The decor has more of a fine dining vibe, and I guess that may be because it turns into Adego, a Michelin rated restaurant, in the evening. Parking is tricky. There is a narrow alley that you can easily miss where there’s a few spots in the back. I read reviews that there’s a lot across the street but I didn’t see anything. Make time to find parking. I would really like to come back here to try more dishes.

This was supposed to be our best and nicest meal of the trip, so there was a bit of hype before going to it. The interior has a nice and inviting feel to it. The meal started out well with the cheesy bread and Jamon (ordered on the side). The service was friendly but not as attentive as I would like it as we had to fill our own waters a few times. Halfway through our meal, the food got more salty to a point where none of us could finish the entree. It was a nice gesture that our server tried to fix the dish and bring it another one for us, but it was more like watering down the broth. We were told that traditionally, the dishes are on the salty side (I normally eat salty foods, but this was very salty). We ended the meal with a few dessert items, with the egg tart being really good. Overall, I expected this experience to be better, but it was good that our group got to hang out together.

I’ve been here a few times and I just can’t seem to feel wowed by the food. Their angle is that they’re descendants of Portuguese immigrants and they serve modern takes of Portuguese food. However, I feel like this story is lost during the entirety of the meal & should be leaned on more heavily. For example, every dish should have a story of how it relates to a typical Portuguese dish or how it’s a twist as an influence of immigrating. Instead, we were just explained what we were eating. Great, but now wow. This will be controversial, but I feel like the portion sizes can be smaller. At the end of the first 4 courses my belly was bursting full. I’m more than willing to pay the same amount of money for less food. Dessert was a total miss for me. It was an egg nest concoction. For me, it had no correlation to Portuguese food & the ratio of the nest portion to egg was just too much. It also was not to my taste. That being said, my companion finished the whole thing. Wine suggestion by the bartender/somm? was excellent. Service was ok. The waiters seemed really unhappy to be there though. There was no joy in what they were serving. Maybe an off day? Hope that next time I come, it will improve bc I really want to like this restaurant. ☹️

My wife and I came here for a date night before going to a comedy show. The ambiance was formal, but no requirement for black tie or suit, per standard California dress attire. Jeans, with a polo was fine, there were other patrons there with T-shirts. The wait staff was inviting and helpful. We ordered the cheese bread (pão de queijo), shrimp fritters, potato salad (salada russa), seafood rice, pork and clams, and for dessert an orange tart. For starters we got the cheese bread was fantastic, light, airy, and slightly chewy. It was not overly cheesy, perfect amount of salt. The shrimp fritters were tasty, although my wife thought the fritters were too "shrimpy/seafoody" in flavor. Crispy on the outside with chopped shrimp on the inside. The potato salad was a bit underwhelming, however, I thought green beans were an interesting element to the dish. The flavor was bland with mayo being the primary flavor to the dish. I prefer a little more tang and mustard to my potato salad, however it was an interesting rendition. The pork and clams were in a rich gravy and tasted fantastic, the only issue was it was literally pork and clams, there was no starch to accompany the dish so it felt a little rich by itself. Great flavor, clams were fresh and the pork was tender. The seafood rice was mostly good. The mussels were cooked well, not over cooked and not undercooked, and the lobster, and clams in the rich sauce worked well with the rice. One clam I ate went bad so I unfortunately I had to spit it out, but it didn't affect the rest of the dish. Lastly, for dessert, we finished with an orange tart. The dish was a nice touch to finish the meal, not too sweet, slightly bitter, orangy, and bready. The bread was soaked through with a sweet syrup, the bitterness came from notes of the orange peel. All in all a decent meal for a fair price. I included a photo of the menu and pictures of everything we ate for reference for size of each dish.

This is a review of my visit in October, 2023. I booked 2 tasing menus for my girlfriend's birthday and was sorely disappointed by the experience given the price: Food: Most dishes were tasty but failed to impress for a restaurant of this caliber. The Tuna Tartar tasted slightly fishy and my girlfriend found a piece of glass in embedded in her tartar. The desserts were the only items that lived up to our expectations. We had also paid $25 for a box of pastries since we've heard of great things from their sister bakery, Pastelaria Adega. But for $25 we received 6 very average, cold Portuguese egg tarts. Service: The staff is not trained to to the standards of a fine dining restaurant. We were served a few different kinds of bread. When we asked for an extra serving of one of the breads, we were told no because they only made enough bread for each seating of the night. In addition, when my girlfriend retrieve the piece of glass from her tuna tartar, the staff nonchalantly said "Sorry" and walked away. All in all, we paid $569 for 2 tasting menus, 2 glasses of wine, and a box of pastries. For this price or less, we have dined at much better fine dining establishments that delivered unforgettable experiences (Lord Stanley in SF is an excellent example). It blew our minds how Adega could get away with charging this price for this kind of experience. Adega a mediocre restaurant masquerading as a Michelin starred establishment. Be warned if you're considering on visiting

For a $1,000 dinner for two, this was a deeply disappointing experience. To begin with, it felt very strange to be completely alone in the restaurant, surrounded by a dozen empty tables. The atmosphere immediately felt off. We sent both fish dishes back — the sauce was overwhelmingly salty, and the fish itself was dry, as if it had been frozen and overcooked or over-steamed. Unfortunately, the lamb was no better: again excessively salty and very dry. Two main courses went completely untouched, yet no one asked why or showed any genuine concern. It was my wife’s birthday, which we made known to the staff upon arrival since there was no way to indicate it during the reservation process. Not even a small gesture, a candle or simple acknowledgment — was made. Given that we were the only guests in the restaurant, one might expect the chef to stop by and ask for feedback, especially after dishes were sent back. Instead, as we were leaving, the chef appeared to be seated and scrolling on Instagram, offering only a brief and indifferent “thank you.” There was a strong sense of ego, as though past accolades justified the current standard. Unfortunately, the food did not reflect the price point or reputation. In short: mediocre experience. The service staff themselves were not the issue, but the food certainly was. Overpriced and underwhelming. I would not recommend it and would advise others to avoid it. Happy to elaborate further if needed.
