Unpretentious and delicious food. Staff is truly sweet and caring. My wife and I have lived here 15 years and this is pretty much our favorite VN restaurant
Let me put it this way. This place beats com tam Thien Huong in price, quality and quantity. Their plate is enough for 2 meals. At Thien Huong, I can easily finish the plate in one seating. The meat here is also thicker and juicier, I like the way they marinated it too, probably a southern vietnamese thing, sweet and salty. I also loveee the sauce that goes with it. If I can only eat one thing for the rest of my life, this is the thing! They also give you 2 big pieces of meat instead of 1.5 small pieces like Thien Huong, they are slightly cheaper but seriously I dont mind paying more for this. The only cons is that the place looks a little dirty and its located in a ghetto plaza.
SO GOOD BEST BROKEN RICE Everything was flavorful and filling, but not heavy or greasy. They have a whole veg meat menu with vegetarian fish sauce too! We will be back.
Amazingly delicious veg food. I wasn’t expecting lot of veg food here. But to my utter surprise they have a separate menu for veg food, which is pretty impressive. Customer service is very pleasing. Would definitely revisit. Last but not least. The tofu recipe was fabulous. I haven’t had such a tasty tofu 😋😋
Old school! They serve no fuss, delicious food. All the grilled items are good. My favorite are the cha gio, fried spring rolls with fluffy pork filling and nem nuong, a slightly sweet grilled pork patty. The cha gio is probably the best I've had anywhere, restaurant or home made. I wish them continued success so everyone can enjoy good food here for a long time.
I am very picky when going out to eat. But when my friends told me about this restaurant. My husband and I want to try out and I can’t believe it. We ordered the special combo plate and they are turn out very good and the time we ordered only 5-10 minutes. And specially the owner ( sweet little lady) she is very friendly and always has a beautiful smile on her face. We definitely will be back next time.
Amazing, authentic food at a local, hidden gem. Plus a very generous portion size, especially for the price! Simply put: tasty and affordable. Parking spaces are a bit compact but that doesn't keep me away.
Hands down best Com Tam in San Jose. Nay, the bay area. The bottles of all you can drink nuoc mam is just the best. They used to have the leeks available on every table, but now I have to ask for it. I can eat pickled leeks for day. The crowd is usually hit or miss when you go. It can look incredibly empty, but I assure you the food is great. It's also cool how all the smoke blows into the neighboring homes. Must be heaven for them.
The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They had a lot of unique dishes that I've never heard of before as well. I'll definitely go back there again.
One of the OGs. We used to drive by with the fam when we were kids and you could see the smoke from the BBQ. Authentic Vietnamese food and one of the best for Rice Noodle Bowls.
The best bbq pork in the south bay.
Tip: Com Tam Dat Thanh is one of among several broken rice plates in the San Jose area, but is arguably the best. Their signature rice plates can include the kitchen sink, but don't miss the excellent fried shrimp cake, grilled shrimp on sugarcane, egg cake, and shredded pork skin. You can even buy these items in bulk to go to make your own broken rice at home.
Solid and delicious food, and nice owners. Been a regular for years. Once I brought my brother who was visiting from out of town, and he asked for their food again the day after. For me, this place has been better than other Com Tam places I have tried in the area.
We ordered the #2 – Com Tam Thit Nuong (Rice plate with BBQ Pork, Fried Shrimp Cake, etc.) and #73 – Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio (BBQ Pork and Egg Rolls). The sauce and chili is self-serve on the table. I added about half the spoon of chili to my sauce, which gave it a kick. Loved the sauce, nice and savory, slighlty sweet, but not too sweet. The rice plate was delicious, everything was well executed. The pork was slightly on the sweet side, but packed with flavor. It had a nice charred BBQ taste to it. The egg cake was fluffy and had a light taste paired with the sauce was great. The BBQ shrimp was cooked perfect still juicy with a plump texture. The marinated had a sweetness to it and the grill gave it a nice hint of smoky char. The fried Shrimp Cake light and crispy, full of flavor, on the savory side. Grilled Shrimp meat on Sugar was savory. The shredded pork was okay, I could do without it. I didn't try asking for substitute, but next time I would try substituting for BBQ pork instead. It also comes with soup, it was a nice palate cleanser, very strong and savory flavor. The dish did a good job at balancing the sweet and savory flavors. (5 out of 5) The Vermicelli Pork and Egg Roll was also delicious. Same pork was used for the rice dish. The egg roll used a different type of wrapper than the traditional egg roll. It gave it a more light and crispy texture which I liked. The filling was also packed with meat and flavor. Everything was well executed and flavorful. The dishes were on the sweet and savory side. The portion size for the rice plate was massive, I was very stuffed after finishing.
Ordered #4 BBQ chicken ($20.95) with added fried egg for $1.95 extra. Service is ok. Had to ask for water refills a few times. Entire plate was delicious!!! Fresh, flavorful and full of texture! Definitely want to try more dishes!
my favorite com tam/broken rice in the bay area! quick and easy going service, meat is always seasoned well and cooked perfectly, fish sauce is delicious, veggies are fresh. the grilled pork chop is so tasty, as is the egg cake and the shrimp; you pretty much cant go wrong!
Massive portions, quick service, and delicious food! It might seem pricey at first but the portions and quality of food is worth it. They have all the combination of broken rice dishes you could every want! Tried #7, #59, and their egg rolls. The plates came with beef ribs, fried shrimp cake, grilled shrimp, veggies, soup, and #7 included extra items like the sugarcane shrimp, shredded pork skin, and egg cake. The flavor of the beef was delicious, and their fried shrimp cake is huge and well made. Despite getting it to go, when I got home to eat it it was still nice and crispy! Their eggs rolls are amazing too. Filling was tasty and good skin to filling ratio. And Vietnamese coffee is a must at any viet place. It’s sweet, creamy, and strong! Staff was really nice, I walked into the store and they recommended me items to pick. My order took about 10 minutes to be ready!
4/10/2022 @ 10am. Opens early and is quiet. Remembered the days when grilled meat smoke welcomed you to savory meat. Not as savory as I remembered. Limited parking for not being busy. Liked the large container of fish sauce. Fish sauce is mild. Chicken flavor soup mild. Everything seems mild.
This place has been around for a long time, and selling the same exact dishes of Com Tam. It's the reference broken rice with grilled sides in the Bay area. The menu contains all combinations of the sides. Try them all!
Been coming here since I was like 6-7 and I still come back and order the SAME thing 20+ years later. Amazing spot. There used to be a man working there that was so friendly cool. He was there literally for 10+ years and I always called him my uncle lol. My whole family and friends went here. Best spot in town. I take everyone here.
Look it's simple the best of the best Vietnamese restaurant around. And I personally like the feel and the lively characters hanging around it.
Love this place. I drove down from San Francisco just to eat here. Service was friendly and everybody wear a mask. That was a plus. They also setup a table outside for a customer just because they had a dog. What great service is that. Can't ask for more.

In A Nutshell: -Com Tam Dat Thanh is one of the OG com tam (broken rice) restaurants in San Jose. -What I really like about this place, is the large portion of food you get. -The pork chops are always moist and not too thick. -The broken rice is authentic broken rice, if you eat at enough com tam spots, you will know who's not using real broken rice. -The parking lot is a headache since it's so small, which is why I recommend you eat here on a slow day. Overall, if you drive down Tully Road near the McLaughlin don't be surprised if your nose picks up the wonderful fragrance of Com Tam Dat Thanh.
Good food, it’s gotten a lot better than previous years but not as good as the original owners 10+ years ago. They skimp out on the beef ribs, and the sausage is super over cooked borderline burnt. However it’s good for the price, hopefully they don’t raise the price like they did at thiên hương
We like this place. It's more like mom and pop place in Vietnam. No fancy plates or decorations. Food is very authentic and reasonable price. We eat here quite often. It's comfort food for my sons.
Since I was hungover, I wanted something soupy, so I ordered a house seasonal soup which seems to always be the same soup. Twas' ginger chicken broth with kale, lime and onions. Am a fan, was delicious, the kale almost tasted like collard greens. Last but not least, I got the thai iced tea which they say is made in-house. Pretty good! Would be back.
home made vietnam dishes, little bit expensive, $50+ for 2 people

Been a long time come back here. Basic price is under $11 bucks, ok for the portion of the foods given in plate. Order number 13 and barely got any chicken....sad...🤔 But more broken rice than any others restaurant.
Still my favorite place to get "com tam suon" after many years. Probably the best pork chop broken rice place in San Jose and is not overrated/hyped like other places. Low-key hole in the wall type of restaurant with high quality foods. Minus 1 star for sketchy plaza as I don't feel safe leaving my car park there. Also the portion (especially the pork chop) is getting smaller compared to a few years ago.

Arrived around noon on a Monday. Restaurant wasn't busy. I ordered similar to the #2 broken rice plate, minus the grilled shrimp. This was an average Vietnamese broken rice and grilled meat eatery that could be found in Anywhere, U.S.A. Nothing was special or stood out. The two key components—grilled pork and modified fish sauce—could have used more flavoring. The remaining items were executed with a "follow the herd mentality." The side soup bowl seemed like an afterthought. The meal and restaurant were presented as though they'd seen better days. Overall: pricey, for commonplace and forgettable Vietnamese food.
The restaurant was clean. The bathroom was clean. There's no way a wheelchair to get through the hall to get into the men's room. I ordered rice with barbecue chicken. It's been a long time since I've been in a Vietnamese restaurant so I don't know if it's common to have rice that dry. Barbecue chicken was okay but nothing special. Portion size I thought was small. I doubt that I would go back.
Two servers running back and forth. The meat was room temperature and low quality. The crispy tofu was freshly made a was great! The rice was soggy and disappointing. Will not return :((((
What a pleasant surprise! Had the Hủ Tiếu Đặc Biệt (Rice Noodle Soup with Shrimp, Pork and Quail Eggs) and was very satisfied. Will definitely want to come back again.
No frill com tam (broken rice plate). Broken rice is a vietnamese rice plate that uses broken rice (tiny rice) that you usually mix with fish oil (you don't have to but I like it that way). The rice plate typically comes with pork chop, egg cake, shrimp cake etc. This place is inside a strip mall and there really isn't much deco but it's clean and that's good enough. A lot of rice plate places are called Com Tam Thanh but so I can see why this is named such way. I think the pork chop here is bigger than the others but the other stuff such as egg cakes are not as good (but close enough). It's not particularly cheaper than other places but the best part is that this is also not as crowded as the more popular broken rice places. Service is good enough for such simple place. The place is bigger than I expected.
Quality has dropped off a bit. This was one of my favorite local places to go to for their specialty grilled pork and rice plates. Consistently delicious. Not too much to say about the ambience, but the food is why you're there and will keep coming back.

Order twice for food Togo. Didn’t see any utensil 🍴. Called and asked.., they said Cali rule changed. You need to ask for … Won’t never order again.
Doordashed a plate and it came with one slice of Galbi cut into four pieces. Not worth it.
It was my first time having com tam here as I read great reviews about this place on Yelp's so I wanted to try out. Turned out it wasn't as I expected. I think com tam Thien Huong does a much better job. The rice in Dat Thanh was a bit dry and not as hot. The meat balls are not impressive.

I would rate this place 5 stars in 10 years ago because they deserved it due to their good customer service as well as well tasted qualities of food. However, during these COVID years, not only they have served nasty food but also the-cheapskate owner is a problem. Today, I ordered Bún thịt nướng chả giò l which supposed to include important part of my dish. For examples: beans sprout 🌱, small slices of lettuces, sour raw carrot and white beetroots. Honestly, I just wanted a decent meal but this place has too much drama. I’d rather drive 1 mile more to get a good-looking bún thịt nướng chả giò on a Friday like today.
We usually come to this place for their broken rice but this time there were no service at all. I'm so done with this place. They seated us and that was it. We waited 5 minutes without anyone taking our order. Never coming here again.
Gave me food poisoning, made me sick. Under cook shellfish on same flat grill as chicken, letting oils mix. Chicken tasted and smelled of squid. Should use pans and food safety procedures. Never ever going back.
