Awesome food, amazing service. They were able to seat us right next to each other and very attentive servers. The tomahawk steak was amazing, so was the mashed potatoes and the ribeye as well. I’m so glad we were able to celebrate an event here and I would highly recommend coming back for more next time!

Two words: lobster mash! Steaks are phenomenal and service is terrific. Located in downtown San Jose at the Fairmont hotel, I never tire of this place. I've dined here for about 20 years and it's delicious every time. Crabcakes apps are the best. The entree's are mainly ala carte (some include garlic mash or creamed spinach), regardless, you'll want to order a few sides as well. The wine list is exceptional and covers the gamut. Back half of the week you'll need reservations, especially during the holidays. The souffle dessert takes a while to prepare so to be sure to order ahead. It's excellent and plenty to share among two (or more). Grab an apple on the way out.

A nice fine dining place. The food was very good. I really liked the Ahi tuna sashimi. The crispy spinach while very delicious was a little salty. The steak and potato were great too. Would come here again.

I came here on a business trip with a friend due to it being one of the only places available for sit down that is open during the COIVD crisis. Our server was professional and you can expect a fine dining atmosphere. The food was delicious, prepared well, and they definitely care about the look with beautiful orientation and each plate wiped clean before being served. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is not budget conscious since it is on the pricer side.

Hands down best service, best staff and quality food! Seared diver scallops and ribeye were on point!! Not to mention the drinks! (Old fashioned and Moscow Mule!) will be coming back for Happy Hr!

The quality and taste of the steaks are no doubt excellent. Love the grilled asparagus. Selection of beer (for people like me from Europe) is too thin.

I went here twice: one in June 2021 - my high school grad. month - and on November 11, 2023. I admit that they have a kind staff and they care about their customers. Though their menu changes frequently, I admit they serve a very delicious side dish of creamed spinach, my favorite. However, I couldn't take another bite when I was told - in my dining group - to eat more than they can chew. Perhaps, it's the delicious appetizers/starts and creamed spinach I had. On the plus side, I didn't feel sick from the meals; no food poisoning after. Overall, this place is a great place to eat like a fancy fellow.

🎈 Birthday dinner = amazing. Joel = even better! From the second we sat down, he was charming, upbeat, and just the sweetest. He made sure everything was perfect without ever being over the top ! just the right amount of friendly and fun. It’s rare to find someone with such natural people skills and a good heart to match. Joel, you made my birthday sparkle a little brighter thank you!! 🌟

The steaks were good. Only thing was the temperature on the steaks were swapped between me any my guest. The dry aged steak had a great flavor but not overpowering. The cocktails were good.

Everything was delicious. All the staff were highly professional. The oysters were devoured. The desserts were very tasty. The steaks were incredible. They even brought out some Brussels even though they were not on the menu.

Very rarely do I give a full 5 Star rating. This Resto impressed our party of three. Everything about our dining experience was fantastic. Paul, our server, went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and taken care of throughout the meal. He was a wealth of knowledge with a great sense of humor. The other staff was so helpful and professional as well. Our food was delicious to the last bite and very well presented. We started with fresh baked warm bread and butter and some crispy Calamari. For our Entrées we enjoyed the Nordic Halibut with Brussel Sprouts, Australian Lamb Chops with Lobster Mac-n-Cheese and a perfectly cooked medium rare 8oz. Flat Iron Steak with Miso Glazed Asparagus. Followed by a spongy yet delectable Japanese Cheesecake that was first released to us that night. Also we devoured a scrumptious Blood Orange Bread Pudding. We all agreed that we should have ordered two of those! I treated myself to a Highland Park 12 Scotch served neat that complimented my meal perfectly.

The Grill - review This is a great alternative to Flemings. You’ll love it here if they are fully staffed. The food is really good and the ambiance is great. You can also sit outdoors for a sunny meal with a breeze. This is an anniversary dinner type of place. It’s a place where you have an important meeting. Lots of lawyers hang out here. The prices are such to attract a certain crowd. If you’re looking for exclusivity, it’s your place. Drinks are very strong. Highly recommend the old fashioned Bread is hard and butter is not softened. Ordered lobster bisque but not much lobster in it, not even one small tail of lobster. It is very tasty and rich. It’s delicious. Crab cake looks awful but tastes amazing. Very poor and lazy plating. No pride was taken in the presentation. Pinot Grigio tastes delicious. Parking - little to none Time to be acknowledged immediately Time to be seated - 5 min , very understaffed One group of four gentlemen sat down and then actually left before even getting service because there’s only the bartender helping out everyone in the bar area. Currently 7 customers. They would have made 11. Missed opportunity. 145p arrival on a Monday The host got there at 1:51pm Time to take my order 10 min later Time to get water 10 minutes Time to get drink 13 minutes Time to get appetizer 2:06pm Time to get bread and crab cake 2:08 I will return here but only for a special occasion.

Best experience we had in San Jose. (And we went to Morton's). The food was excellent (Sea Bass, Octopus, Salad). My new favorite cocktail is the Passion Cosmo. The Tiramisu was the best. And we had sweet, friendly, knowledgeable Justin to walk us through our dining experience. I was sad we didn't get to go back before we flew out. This was a splurge dinner (very small portions), but we would have gone back for cocktails and dessert.

I normally do not visit San Jose but I had the opportunity to be there this weekend. After looking for different options we decided to visit The grill, we did not do much of a research but we were happy to find this place. The service was great, everyone since we got there had a positive energy and a welcoming smile. The place was clean. The service was on point, the food for to us fast. And they kept checking on us while we were eating. Great place to stop by for sure. Like a said, I normally do not visit San Jose so I am not in touch with pricing but I have be honest and this is a nice place and price comes a long of how nice it is, not a bad thing but you should be aware of that. The menu had a lot more sea food than I anticipated but for some that could be a good thing. Besides that I would love to stop by and have another meal in this place. Thank you and I will see you around!

Best NY steak on the planet. Of all the great cuts on the menu, the dry aged version with umami butter is the best. Nothing else quite like it. The seafood tower is great as well and a perfect appetizer for groups of four or more.

Instead of 5 stars I gave them 4. We were in on 12/21/17 for lunch with customer and coworkers and they ran out of Salmon so I choose steak but then after steak, finishing glass of wine and I cant get my expresso. They ran out expresso again...What a day here? Next time I will loan my Jura coffee maker machine.

A great steak spot in downtown SJ! The staff was very friendly and attentive, making sure to stay at 25% indoor capacity unlike other restaurants I've seen nearby. The drinks were great, the brussel sprouts are to die for. The Filet was only ok, the porterhouse was only ok as well. Nice indoor ambiance, solid food but nothing to write home about (except for those brussels!)

S
Shar Lio

Let me just start off by saying the steak and lobster that we had was to die for , for steak just melted in your mouth, the lobster tasted amazing as well. before we had our main meal we tried the steak tartare personally it’s not my favorite it taste like dog food to me not that I’ve tasted dog food haha LOL but the consistency and look is that of dog food that you buy at the store that’s the only thing. It was a very nice laid-back kind of vibe the lights were Dimmed. we went after lunch so there wasn’t a lot of people there and it was during the week too. I’m gonna post some of my favorite pictures that I took of the place . there is a bathroom of course as they should be. the waiter was really attentive to us and didn’t interrupt us so much. overall a great experience. I definitely recommend a date night at that place to eat

M

Both lobster bisque and steak were little salty for me but overall great food and nice that they were served hot! The server was very nice too! Fyi you get nothing else than steak so you need to order side for extra

4.75 stars Nice place. Good cocktails, bartender was willing to try something new and look up a recipe and give it a shot, turned out great. Would have given 5 stars for slightly more professional service, a little too casual...maybe that's the ambiance (we normally go to The Sea). Need to step up their beer game, more craft beers...plenty of local choices. We will be back.

Although a little pricey, this was another great pick. I chose Crab and Lobster Cake with saffron aioli, herb oil, lemon vinaigrette, fennel salad, apple, and popcorn shoots (starter as a meal), with a side of Roasted Brussels Sprout & Broccolini.

My trip to this place was mostly great. The food was outstanding. I ordered a medium steak but got well done. It did taste marvelous though. Super tender. My date was satisfied with her salmon as well. The service was a little lacking in my opinion. I felt our waiter was being snarkey because we didn't order any drinks. He was somewhat passive aggressive throughout until I tipped him well (the food was great) then he became civil again. Food though... outstanding. The atmosphere was pleasant as well. It was empty when we went, so we got to take a look around.

Our experience at The Grill on the Halley was memorable from start to finish. The ambience is a blend of modern sophistication with a cozy touch, making it perfect for both intimate dinners and celebratory gatherings. We began our evening at the bar, where the selection of distinct wines impressed us. The knowledgeable bartender guided us through their offerings, ensuring we started with the perfect wine. Once inside the restaurant, the atmosphere remained warm and inviting, with attentive service enhancing our dining experience. The menu boasts an array of enticing dishes, highlighting high-quality ingredients. We started with a Beef Carpaccio. While it was presented beautifully and tasted exquisite, the portion seemed rather small for sharing. For those with a hearty appetite, ordering an additional appetizer might be wise. The Caesar Salad was more appropriately sized for sharing and featured crisp, fresh ingredients with a delightful dressing. It was a great precursor to the main courses. For our entrees, we had the Filet Mignon and the New York steak. Both steaks were cooked to perfection, tender and bursting with flavor. The Filet Mignon, in particular, was a standout, offering a melt-in-your-mouth experience that truly highlighted the quality of the beef. Overall, The Grill on the Halley offers a top-notch dining experience with a well-curated menu and an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere. It's a great spot for enjoying a fine meal with family and friends. Probably the best wine list in San Jose Downtown, featuring a remarkable selection of notable wines. Although the prices can be quite steep, you can still enjoy a variety of exquisite wines without breaking the bank. For a more affordable experience, consider choosing wines by the glass to savor the variety and quality.

Went here on a Monday. Was looking for a steak and usual places were closed. My date had the steak and i had the prawns risotto. I got three prawns, one had no meat. My date had the steak, over cooked a bit. Drinks were good. Service was good. A bit over priced for the quality of the food. Probably won't be going back.

Went for happy hour. Service was slow, however, (in their defense) they only had one server on and he was also tending bar. He had about 5 tables and made all the drinks. The happy hour prices were reasonable and cocktails were good. The calamari and oysters were also delicious!

Good food and service. Nice atmosphere. Cocktails freshly made (not pre batched). White Negroni was a nice variation on the classic one with Bergamot bitters. But they could use clear ice to improve presentation…

The cocktail “the perfect gin” was mixed very well. I loved the ginger lentil carrot soup, balanced flavors and hearty consistency. The shrimp (prawns) and scallops seemed incredibly fresh and very nicely presented and cooked perfectly. Service tendered by Hector was impeccable in spite of my relatively late arrival (in relation to posted closing time) that evening.

The Grill on the Alley is a classic American steakhouse offering a sophisticated yet comfortable dining experience. Guests enjoy premium steaks, fresh seafood, and seasonal specialties, all served with attentive, professional service. The ambiance suits date nights, celebrations, or casual lunches, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Their wine list and handcrafted cocktails complement the menu perfectly, making it a go-to spot for locals and visitors alike.

Gorgeous restaurant and bar. The food was solid, but not many options for vegetarians/vegans. Service was pretty rough at the bar. Forgot to put in my food, took 40 minutes to get something off the bar bites menu. Pretty good good but very pricy for lack luster service.

Not too many reservations available with Christmas events downtown. Our table was adjacent to six noisy children whose parents sat at a table far away. I asked the waiter if they were unsupervised and he said: ya think? Another party asked to be reseated elsewhere. My Husband intervened and asked the children to curtail their band noise. Parents offered us to take them home with us! Expensive. The menu promises delectable dishes but does not deliver. Miso glazed asparagus for $14 delivered 4 undercooked and somewhat not fresh asparagus spears without a hint of miso. Pureeed parsnips? On the $58 wagu shortrib was just mashed potato. The wagu was four measly slices not a whole rib! $68 filet was perfect but to get a sauce and a side it it another $20 . I do not mind paying for great interesting food but this was not. Over promised and under delivered. Stay away.

First off let me say that I've been going here every Fanime for the last few years as part of our convention tradition for my group. Over the last several years the food and quality has normally been pretty decent until this year. The menu changed with some really tasty looking items, with a Japanese and Okinawan influence on some of the new dishes which I was excited for. So when we started ordering it seemed like the restaurant was out of a lot of stuff that was the first red flag. After the food had come out we noticed that the decrease in quality of food was drastically notable especially in the cuts of meat. Some of the newer dishes were also lacking in a bit of flavor, especially when I tried a mushroom base dish which should be normally earthy and meaty flavor, It was lacking that good flavor that umami. Instead it was lacking those qualities and more tasting like a cream heavy dish. There were other noticeable things as well such as the atmosphere and the restaurant itself looking a little rundown and I need a repair. But this could have been caused with the new ownership of the hotel. I will say that the service is still on point, the waiters in the servers are very attentive and nice. I will try the place again next year and hopefully I can revise this review with more positive notes.

Beautiful interior, amazing service, great cocktails, very underwhelming food. Extreme lack of seasoning and the ingredients did not seem fresh. The wine menu is exorbitantly priced, a $15-$20 bottle of wine is priced $100+

The restaurant wasn't busy, but the service was okay at best. We ordered cocktails and an appetizer to start - cocktails came but the appetizers came about 20 minutes later. We had to ask for water refills several times throughout the evening. To top it off, we were told it was last call and rushed out of the restaurant around 8:30. Considering our bill was close to 1k for 5 people, you'd think we would have been treated much, much better.

This used to be one of my favorites to visit downtown, but the menu and food quality has dropped so much. The service was fine, if a little slow. The steak was ok, cooked fine, but little to no seasoning. The sides were very disappointing - little to no flavor for such expensive sides.

T

Filet was great, not the best ever but quite good. Salad was spartan and just adequate, you can get a better pre-mix salad at Safeway. Side dish selections and quality were "meh" Service was poor to adequate, somewhere in between Price was outlandish. Over priced doesn't come close to describing the problem. Insanely overpriced!! Until today, The Grill on the Alley used to be my family's favorite place for that "once in a year indulgence"......., never again! I recommend against this restaurant. Sad to leave this review but it is what it is.

Ordered the NY strip steak, the lobster mac & cheese, and the lobster ravioli. I ordered the steak medium rare, and it came out very very well done. The waitress noticed and immediately took it back. The second steak came out clearly raw (not blue, RAW) on the inside and she took it back again. At this point, I gave up on the steak. To their credit, they removed it from my bill. Lobster mac & cheese was passable but not great. The ravioli tasted okay, but they only give you 4 ravioli. For the price, it's just not worth it. Eat anywhere else.

Hey guys, You can't fix what you don't know is broken. So here we go. I wouldn't normally comment, but I have too. I used to work in Hospitality, yes, I worked here many moons ago as a Fairmont property. Pastry dept. Under Francisco. It's my city too, I love San Jose and walk the beat every week. We just spent $100 plus a $20 tip for three drinks, truffle fries and the wagyu sushi roll, (is this APP a joke?) We stopped by for drinks at the bar last night after visiting the Christmas Faire in front of the Hotel. We have come by at least 3x in the last 6 months; we're trying to help you. But the service and food have been poor for the prices you're charging. Now this is the last time we come to this establishment. Apparently, you don't want any new business. #1. The bar area is super cold and uninviting when you walk in. The doors need to be kept closed. I might suggest, a velvet barrier to block the cold wind from blowing in for starters. #2 Open the drapes so you can see the outside lights would be a suggestion. #3 Drinks and the bartender were very pleasant, she was super nice. No bad vibe on her at all. She made us very attractive cocktails. The fries we ordered were good and came fast. Now to the apps we ordered, The beef sushi roll which came very late, was appalling. This is the grand hotel in downtown SJ. No taste at all, 1 oz of cold beef wrapped in a sushi paper, two strands of carrot and rice that barely held together. for $34.00. Yikes. You won't make it like this. Time to pick up your game. Hotel drinks are always steep, we know this. No problem here at $20 a pop. But who would order any food when it's this cold inside. Even the hostess was freezing. Anyways, I know good help is hard to find these days. Just some friendly advice from patrons who live close by. This space you have is great, make it work!! Cheers, Scott

For such a higher end place was very disappointing. Sat at bar for cocktails and appetizers. Wife tried to order two different glasses of wine from menu which they didn’t have but they had the third. Ordered baked bre which comes with only a forks to share. No crackers or crustini. Asked the bar tender and he look at us like sorry no. I explained that I’ve never ordered baked bre where you only get to share it with only a forks. So crazy! At least I know now not to come back. Wow!! Plus this place is expensive.

Just got food for take out from here. My “sweet potato truffle” fries were not sweet potoato but regular potatoes. My Cesar salad was just lettuce and an egg in a take out box. So disappointed. How much did I pay for this? Do not go here.

Our party had extremely high expectations for The Grill on the Alley, but unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing from start to finish. We had a reservation on December 13th to celebrate a birthday for a party of 16, with a minimum spend requirement of $1,500. Prior to the event, the event coordinator failed to inform us that a large event would be taking place in the area the same evening. This resulted in severe traffic congestion and a lack of available parking, causing most of our party to arrive late through no fault of our own. Upon arrival, we were immediately frustrated to discover that the menu being offered was not the same as the menu advertised online. The majority of our party had reviewed the online menu ahead of time and had already decided what they wanted to order. Given the substantial minimum spend requirement, this discrepancy was especially upsetting, as the items we intended to purchase were not available. After finally selecting from the limited menu provided, we were then informed that many of the items we attempted to order were out of stock, causing yet another delay while our group tried to choose alternatives. Once orders were finally placed, it took over an hour and a half for the food to arrive. When the meals were eventually served, they were cold, overcooked, and more than half of the ordered sides were missing. This was completely unacceptable given the price point and reputation of the restaurant. Despite multiple complaints being communicated, the manager, Alex Gomez, never came to our table to address the situation, offer an apology, or show any concern whatsoever. This lack of leadership and accountability was extremely unprofessional, especially in a hospitality setting. I would like to acknowledge that our waiter Angelo and waitress Diamond were absolutely outstanding. They were attentive, professional, and clearly did their best to manage an overwhelming situation. They deserve recognition and praise for their efforts. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience for a restaurant we had high hopes for. As first-time guests, this was one of the worst dining experiences our group has had, and unfortunately, it has left us with no desire to return or recommend this establishment.

We lived in San Jose for many years and enjoyed dining at the The Grill. Because of my job I had to move to So. Cal. My family and I returned for a hockey game and decided to dine at the Grill. We had a terrible experience. We had a 6:30 reservation and we were one of maybe two tables. The restaurant was completely empty. The food was not edible. Whether it was the calamari or the steaks nothing was prepared properly. The steaks were served at the wrong temperature and were served cold. The restaurant was understaffed and it is not their fault based off the circumstances they were given.
