The best sushi in SLO!!! This spot has the highest quality sushi, peaceful atmosphere, and super friendly service. If you are looking for fresh delicious sushi you have to come here.
One of the best meal we had in a long time. Authentic is all I can say
Their beef gyu-don is very yummy. The main chef has been so kind - even offered us a free sample dish. Everything is so delicious, I also like their soy sauce, not even mention they use fresh wasabi.
Okay yes the wait is real. We were walk-in’s on a Tuesday a few hours before close. Total wait time was around 1.5 hours (initially guesstimated around 1 hour). We were beginning to get impatient but wanted to trust all the other reviews that said “the wait is worth it”. So glad we did and that all these people were right. Our service was amazing as soon as we sat down. My husband got the toro taku hand roll on special as well as the roll with jalapeños (forgot the actual name) and I had the seared tuna roll. All were phenomenal. He ended up getting a second hand roll because he liked it so much. His hand rolls also came with pickled wasabi that was so different and delicious. Fish was amazingly fresh and all the flavors were perfect. We both raved about this dinner for days afterward. We will eat here again next time we come through and be getting reservations, but the wait would still be worth it
THE BEST SUSHI BY FAR! Fresh, delicious, clean, and one of a kind. The service could be better sometimes but I’m sure they can’t help it when they get so busy. If you want to be seated right away, I recommend going 30-40 min early and putting your name on the waitlist right outside of the restaurant. If not, you’ll have to wait a while but def worth it if you’re looking to eat the BEST SUSHI EVER!
while goshi tends to have a longer queue than most other SLO spots, it is 100% worth the wait. the fish was notably fresh, all the rolls had a very clean, carefully crafted taste and the salmon nigiri literally melts in your mouth. the rolls were wonderful because of their simplicity, three to four good quality ingredients that all complimented each other perfectly. though the sushi was the clear star of the show, i highly recommend the garlic edamame which was extremely flavorful and absolutely delicious.
Goshi is an excellent sushi restaurant. I have been to many and the quality here always impresses me. It is a little more expensive than some other places, but it is worth it. The service is great as well. I love coming here for special occasions.
Located in the Creamery Marketplace in downtown San Luis Obispo, the restaurant evokes the intimate, small, and bustling atmosphere of a Japanese eatery, all while delivering delicious food. I went for lunch, and all the lunch specials came with two sides and miso soup. The Chirashi bowl was probably the best I've ever had, packed with various kinds of fish—including roe, scallops, salmon, unagi, hamachi, white fish, and tuna—all over a bed of seasoned rice. The frosty cold mugs for beer were a nice touch too! It appears they've extended into the back to fit more tables right by the kitchen, which, to me, enhanced the local Japanese vibe even more. The restaurant gets very busy, so I recommend making a reservation. They do accept walk-ins on a first-come, first-served basis. Great service from Jazleen and all the staff. Parking is limited, with a very small lot available, as well as paid street and lot parking nearby
The best genuine sushi outside of Tokyo. I traveled for years to Japan for business and this little place in the heart of San Luis Obispo in what used to be the creamery is the best of the best. Chef is son of original family straight from Japan. Expect a long wait to get seated but well worth the wait. Main fresh wild fish from Japan. Enjoy!
I came here twice. March 2022 and May 2024. The quality remains the same. I love their fish variety and mostly came from Japan. It tastes like fishes in Japan. It makes my heart happy and warm. The chef held high standards of his food. It’s my honor to taste his food. This is a destination spot for me. I make a point to come to central CA so I can eat here. Treasure your opportunities to dine here. Peace 🤟 If they have live shrimp, it’s a must have. They dried the head afterwards. A5 beef sushi is solid!! Order omakase sushi too.
I absolutely love this sushi restaurant. If someone knows of better sushi please let me know. It was recommended to me while staying in Pismo for having the freshest fish. I was absolutely blown away by the ambiance, friendliness and the food! I’ve been twice within a couple months making the 2.5 hour trek. The Albacore Roll is amazing. The service is just as great as the food. Everyone is friendly despite how busy they are. I will update my review but I’m pretty much hooked on the albacore roll. The miso soup is delicious, salads, everything. Stay tuned, again this is a must while in SLO. It’s always busy, so if you can get a reservation, I would recommend doing so.
My husband has been to Japan twice, and even he said this is the closest thing he’s ever eaten compared to Japan’s authenticity. He said he’s as good as it gets. Also, I would highly recommend making a reservation because we waited about 45 minutes on a Tuesday night because that’s how busy and delicious they are. This place deserves 5 starts hands down. I don’t even eat raw fish, but I did last night because it was sooooo good! I’ve also never had noodles like that before and it was fantastic! And everything is VERY reasonably for the presentation and flavor of the food. Both the tea, beer and saki was delicious; as well as, the green tea mochi balls we had for dessert. Everything is fantastic and we will go here again! + the food and service was professional and quick despite how busy they were for a Tuesday. Well worth the wait and the BEST Sushi we ever had in our lives next to japan’s sushi. You must go!
An authentic Japanese restaurant who focuses on delivering the highest quality of sashimi. Food: 8/10 (9.5/10 for sashimi). I shave to make the distinction here because their fish on another level - mostly they directly fly them over from Japan. Thus, price also reflects this, but the quality is amazing. Order any fish, and you won’t be disappointed, but we liked: o-toro (buttery tuna), katsuo (the fish flakes that you see on octopus balls), ma-aji (ma literally means “real” in Japanese), kimedai, salmon, and so many - see my photo! Having said that, I gotta say their other dishes aren’t their focus and you can tell by the stir fry beef that’s a bit too salty. Though, the soup for agrdashi tofu is very thoughtful. It has these mushrooms they add great flavours. If you get a set, you also get these lovely pickles. Their proud in authentic food also shows when they said their fresh wasabi (the literal plant they flew from Japan) is not as fresh as it can be and refuse to serve it. But their pickled wasabi is quite interesting flavour wise and still give you the kick. Price: first, it’s hard to give a price because if you don’t live fresh authentic fish, you may not value this highly. But for a town like this and in California a few thousand miles away from Japan, I’d give it a 8.5/10. We had way too much food and it was $220 for three including tax. Ambience: 9/10. Calligraphy on the wall, the chef and servers wearing traditional clothing, the decorations. It even smells like a sushi house in Japan. Service: 10/10. From stealthily removing the used wet tissues to adding matcha tea multiple times (5 times at least), they really care. The chef also came around (we were at the bar) to ask us about the food. It’s an incredible experience. All in all, it’s an experience. You don’t need the most expensive order - start with something small and see if this is your vibe. But I’m sure if you love fresh authentic fish, you won’t be disappointed.
Not pleased with my experience here. First time customer. I arrived at 5:30 to place a to-go order for two rolls. I was told 30-40 minutes. Came back at 30 and proceeded to wait another 25. Finally, I asked someone at the front if my ticket had been lost... Turns out my food was sitting there the entire time. Rolls were 8/10 but the atmosphere, friendliness, efficiency, service and attention was 2/10. Unacceptable.
My experience was a bit unfortunate here. Food wise the restaurant is great. My husband tried the sushi and he loved them. I ordered an nabe udon and found a fly 🪰in the broth as I was scooping the soup. When I told the waiter, he brought the dish back for replacement. However, when he came out, he was asking where in the bowl I found the fly. I wished I didn't scoop out the fly and should've taken a picture of it. That was a dumb move. They claimed that there was no fly in the kitchen, which made it seem like I put the fly in myself. I don't think it's the waiter, as he was nice when I told him. I guessed it could be the chef as he was sent out to ask that question. It doesn't matter how great of a chef you are. Please admit that you can make mistakes. They did give me a new order of nabe udon but they took away the other tempura that I didn't finish, and didn't replace that. I didn't feel good eating the rest of the meal. The taste didn't matter to me. I feel horrible being accused for the bad service they provided me.
I really wanted to enjoy this sushi place because I’ve heard high praises in the past, but a $50 sushi quickly turned into a $3000 ER bill. I ordered the Kanpai gozen, and soon after eating, I developed terrible stomach pain, nausea, chills, a high grade fever of 104.5. I was unable to sleep throughout the night and eventually ended up in the ER where I was found to be severely dehydrated to where I became tachycardic. The doctors couldn’t do much to ease my symptoms other than giving me 2 liters of fluid and I was sent home to sit through the rest of the food poisoning. It took me at least a week to fully recover. Because I’m currently in school, I missed important midterms and other coursework, and now I have to pay a significant amount of money for medical bills my insurance doesn’t fully cover. I understand eating sushi carries a risk when, but this could have all been avoided with proper food safety and handling. Given the quality of the sushi and the service, I’m disappointed with how it turned out. I’m lucky to feel much better now, but food poisoning can be especially dangerous for older adults and those who are immunocompromised. So please, if you value your health, time, and sanity, do not eat here
