Opinions de Root Cellar San Marcos
Ella was fantastic! The food was exquisite and so fresh! We had the asparagus fries, big cellar salad, bourbon pecan chicken and topped it off with bread pudding and ice cream. I can’t say enough beautiful things about this place! We’ve found a jewel of a place to eat at every time we visit San Marcos! I highly recommend it to everyone and I know you’ll fall in love with it too!
Ate here earlier today around 2 and everything was 5/5. The island salad was phenomenal! I forgot her name but our server was so so sweet she had dark hair and piercings.
Great little place that we just found! The food was delicious and the waite staff were charming and efficient.
The food and environment were really good, we took our little puppy with us and they loved her, they were super kind to us, thank you! 🙏
This is my absolute favorite place. I love it's whole aesthetic it's whole vibe that old building. The food is phenomenal. The most beautiful poached eggs I've ever seen. I really hope it never loses its focus on quality craftsmanship and service. The food is pure art right now and I hope it stays like that.
**Update** There was a little bit of trouble during my first visit to the Root Cellar, but management invited us back and truly made it right. Both the food and the service were phenomenal, and the overall vibes of the establishment were great. We will definitely be back! 😊 My party of 4 chose this spot to try out for lunch. We understood that the service might be slower during Sunday brunch, but when our food came out my poached eggs on my meal (Eggs Florentine) were horribly overcooked. I waited about 10 minutes for our server to swing by to bring it up but eventually had to go inside to talk to someone (we were seated outside). They told me they were going to remake it and after 15 more minutes of waiting, the manager brings me 2 poached eggs on a small plate. Truthfully, I was waiting for a new meal as it has now been 25 minutes since I received my original plate. My muffins are soggy, my potatoes are cold. I tell them please just take the meal off of my check as all my friends are already done eating so I won’t be waiting for another plate to be made. When I get my check, they took off the meal and still charged me for my $4 drink. I’m sorry, I received no sort of apology for this mistake that has ruined my entire experience with my friends, I am not paying for the drink that I sipped on while waiting for my food for an hour and a half. I have to ask to speak to a manager, and the same manager that brought me the eggs comes out. I explain to her why I’m truly disappointed in my experience with their service, and I honestly cannot say I believe that she cared to listen to me at all. Simply said so sorry this happened to you and walked away. They did take my tea off of my check though. At the end, we ask our server if there’s a way we could get a coupon or something since I’m leaving hungry with a very bad impression of this establishment. I get a free bread pudding card that looks like they pulled out of a random drawer. I really wanted to like this cute local cafe, but that was definitely the worst experience I have ever received by an entire team.
The Root Cellar Cafe has knocked it out of the park again! My wife and I are pretty solid in the kitchen—friends and family always rave about our meals—but when we're craving an epic breakfast out, this place is our absolute go-to spot. I always get the Brazilian French toast and load it up with fresh strawberries and blueberries, plus a side of those perfectly seasoned sausage patties. It's pure perfection—the flavors pop, the textures are spot-on, and every bite is just chef's kiss. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and try it!
We had a delicious breakfast at Root Cellar Cafe, and everything from the food to the atmosphere was outstanding. The flavors were fresh, well-prepared, and truly comforting—exactly what you want for a great start to the day. The service made the experience even better. Gummie was absolutely amazing—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, making sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. If you’re looking for great food paired with exceptional service, Root Cellar Cafe is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!
My husband and I were huge fans of The Root Cellar a few years ago in college; we came back to town today and had to get our fix and the food and atmosphere is still just as great! You cannot go wrong with the beer bread or the savory chicken and waffles. We tried the bread pudding today as well and it was amazing. Our server Kailey was amazing and the owner Kyle is the most awesome, down to earth guy. We can’t wait to visit again!
Okay, I HAD to leave a review because this place is just a hidden gem. I am a commuter, and I go to Texas State, so I often have a weird schedule with a huge gap in between the day to do whatever I need to do-usually that means trying out a random restaurant. The Root Cellar Cafe exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked in the door I felt so welcome, and my server Esther was amazing. Sometimes, as a young student I get bad service because they think I won’t tip (I have worked in the service industry for almost 5 years now so jokes on them), but in all seriousness my server was awesome, she checked on me frequently but made sure to let me have my time to myself. There was also a gentleman there who first took my coffee order, and took me to a quiet room in the back so I could study. I ordered a lavender latte, unfortunately they didn’t have the syrup at the restaurant so they went to their neighboring coffee shop (run by the same owner I assume) and he brought me a latte from there! He did not have to go above and beyond but he did, and I greatly appreciate that. He also gave me a coupon for some free food items at some neighboring shops. This place made me feel so welcome, and I cannot wait to send people their way! Thank you for doing the most, you all made my day! They are also super affordable worth plenty of options.
Oh my GOODNESS!! The Root seller has done it again. My wife and I are excellent cooks and everyone raves about our cooking but when I wanna go to a place for a breakfast and want something excellent, I come here! My go to is there Brazilian French toast. I add fresh strawberries and blueberries to it with a side of sausage patties and it is the chef’s kiss. The flavors are vibrant, and the textures are rich. My wife, had the Belgian waffle with the added chicken. Fantastic. The waffle is crisp but not hard and the chicken is well seasoned and whatever they batter the chicken in is light, crispy, and magnificently flavored. And then our waitress Ella brought over some Sriracha honey sauce paired phenomenally with the chicken, giving it a sweet and spicy kick. I find it hard to reward a lot of places with high praise because often I can cook better at home and don’t have to pay an exorbitant price. I come here for breakfast because it’s marvelous and I didn’t have to cook it.
We had our wedding at the Root Cellar Cafe in their beautiful Uproot event space — and it was truly perfect! It was actually the first wedding ever held in that space, and we feel so lucky to have been a part of that milestone. From start to finish, the experience was incredible. The space was cozy, elegant, and just right for our intimate 3-hour celebration (20 people). Aubrey, the private event manager, was absolutely amazing to work with. She communicated clearly, listened to our ideas, and adjusted everything to match our vision. Her attention to detail, warmth, and professionalism made planning so much easier and stress-free. We also want to give a huge shoutout to the entire team who served during the event — they were wonderful! Attentive, kind, and incredibly efficient, they made sure everything ran smoothly and that our guests were taken care of throughout the evening. Everyone worked together seamlessly to create the most relaxed, joyful, and memorable experience for us. The food was absolutely perfect — delicious, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully customized to accommodate all of our guests’ dietary restrictions without any issues. Thank you to Aubrey and the entire Root Cellar team for making our wedding day so special. Highly recommend this hidden gem in San Marcos for any private event!
First time here and will definitely be returning there was a line out the door but no wait. Guess everyone got hungry at the same time lol. Service was calm and quick! I ordered the hillside country breakfast which I will be craving til I come back ! Parking wasnt too bad parked on the street and walked over to this hidden gem.
First time here on 6/2/2025. Celebration lunch for 52nd anniversary. Great service. Lots of attention but not pressing. Good menu options. My wife had the pesto pasta and salad. I went with the Brewhouse Burger. Good portions. Fun place to eat with windows at sidewalk level. Parking was easy at mid-day but could be tricky early.
This restaurant was just superb. My husband and I went in the afternoon during the summer season, and we made a reservation prior. We went in a little early, and were sat immediately. The atmosphere was fantastic and super welcoming. Our waitress was very attentive and made sure to specially note my husband and I’s allergies for the kitchen. Finally, the food was just phenomenal. My husband got the Steak and Eggs, and I had the Brewhouse Burger. He said this was one of the best steaks he had ever had in his life, and mine, which was available on a gluten-free bun, was just decadent. Please come here if you like good atmosphere, great service, and excellent food.
The Root Cellar Cafe – a fantastic breakfast spot in this college town. We had the New Year’s toast with egg and the veggie frittata, both well-prepared and flavorful. The atmosphere is unique—vintage, cozy, with antique furniture, creaky wooden floors, and an old-school charm that makes it feel like stepping into a different era. One fun detail - alcohol service starts at 10 AM, and judging by the crowd, the locals are well aware. The place got noticeably busier right around that time. Service was fast and friendly, making the whole experience even better. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back breakfast, a brunch spot with a little buzz, or just a charming place to start the day, this one’s worth a visit.

Been several times for breakfast usually, now lunch. Always love the selections, food and ambience. I keep returning everything I'm in San Marcos. It's my go to, guaranteed great food and drink!

Food was ok. A bit underwhelming but decent. Out server Ella was sweet.
Interesting place. We sat at a half moon "table" facing the window, not each other. I got the Caribbean stacker which was delicious. Hubs got the burger, which he said the tomato bacon jam was wonderful. Our only complaint was that they charge $1 each for lettuce, tomato, pickles & onions, so the $15 burger quickly became a $20 one.
So I went to get food there for my birthday, I won't lie the service was kind of slow...but the food made up for the slow service! I say I waited about 30-40mins, just to even talk to anyone...but I really did love the food! Would be going back! Just because they make the food so delicious and well seasoned.
This place is in a historic building. It has a cool ambiance but the room way in the back is humid and has a funny smelly smell. We were going to be sitting there but my husband and I quickly asked for different seating and we were sat in the middle room which had much better ventilation and was dry. The food was delicious. The spinach and artichoke dip could have been better. I didn’t like that I had to pay an extra $1.50 for fruit on my French toast and extra $2.00 for a scoop of cream. My server just asked if I wanted fruit and cream but my husband’s waffle came with it included. I’m also used to having powdered sugar on my French toast. Overall this place is good and I will be back to try different things on the menu.
The restaurant was very cute and busy, given Mother's Day weekend. I would return on a less busy day. The food was good, very heavy and the drinks were yummy too. Service was eh, and I did not receive my salad, but it was busy, so that's fine. The cellar pie was nothing like a shephards pie, it was meat, corn and a ton of potato; great for a growing boy! Also, make sure to get the ice cream brownie!!!!!!

Came in here for a lunch with my dad and decided to take out a meal for my husband. Got him the meatloaf which comes with their homemade soup. Brought it home and unfortunately my husband found 2 pieces of wood in it (looks like from a wooden spoon/spatula kind of thing). Didn't make a big deal of it, these things can happen, but l thought l should let them know about it because if they have a big pot of it another customer might end up getting some also. I called and very, very briefly spoke to Ted. As l was explaining the situation, the phone call got disconnected. Or at least l hope it got disconnected and that he didn't hang up on purpose. Because l called back twice and they no longer answered, nor did they call back themselves. What happened with the soup isn't a big deal to me, but how can you treat customers this way? Seriously????
I know this is a popular spot here but I have some major complaints. My daughter and I went to eat here and was seated in the den like area which was quite compacted and full. Being the den like nature it is every voice echoed and boomed in my ears and I had to yell just to hear myself talk even Being two inches away from my daughter. Furthermore, the servers kept coming by and interrupting our conversation. I think they themselves too have their coherence drowned out. They also had to yell and scream at us. The volume came in waves it was truly disorienting. The servers brought us the wrong drink order. Food was mediocre st best. Too pricey. It was not a good experience overall and I actually sighed of relief once we left. I haven't been back since and I don't plan on going back.
Pretty bummed about our experience here the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. At first everyone was really welcoming and friendly. I noticed our food was taking a long time, thought it was odd because there was only one other table with a couple guests. I noticed our server was hanging out with a woman at a nearby table. Didn't think too much of it. Eventually someone else brought our food to the table. Our server was still visiting at the other table. This was the first time at a restaurant to receive cold food. Not only was it cold, but my egg sandwich was soggy due to the tomato. The homestyle potatoes were cold and had a stale taste. It seems like our food had been done for a while, but just sat in the kitchen. Our server continued on with her visit, along with most of the other restaurant staff going to hang out with the woman at the table. Maybe she was a past employee? Their volume of chatter made it difficult to even hold a conversation. After sitting finished with what we managed to eat, our server finally came back and checked to see how we were doing. She'd been sitting maybe 10 ft. from us the whole time, but this is the first she stopped by the table since taking our order. I simply asked for the check. That took probably another 8-10 minutes. What a waste of money and time. On our way out, I noticed the dirty dishes that were on an outside table were still sitting there when we left. So disappointed that the arrival of a 'special guest' showing up caused our meal to be ruined. Hopefully the employees had a nice visit with the VIP.
