Opinions de Wake the Dead Coffee House San Marcos
What an amazing local place! The vibe is absolutely perfect, the baristas are so welcoming and friendly and the food and beverage options are incredible! I love that I was able to get a great craft beer to accompany my white chocolate blueberry lavender scone! White chocolate mocha and Chai were also both amazing as were the blueberry scone and pumpkin cake pop! The walls are adorned with some fantastic local art and there's jewelry, soaps and snacks for sale from local artisans! Now to find a way to relocate or replicate this place to my home town!
I'm always looking for good spooky coffee shops this place hit all the check marks for me. Great staff, good food and coffee and a little spooky vibe.
Great atmosphere! Our barista was super helpful and kind. He gave us suggestions and told us about the place. We hadn’t been here before and he was able to make us a drink that’s similar to what we get at another place. It was so good! We will for sure come back when we are in the area again!
I love it here! And I feel safe, as they are inclusive towards LGBT folks. I can come here to use the restroom without fearing judgement or questioning (I am both a transgender woman and non-binary, yes I am real and exist!). Thank you <3
Cute little coffee shop to get a drink or two, some pastries, and maybe something to get adults to the clouds. There are also regular events that can be worth checking into if they fit your vibe, including regular markets, open mic, and cursed movie nights. Staff is friendly and there are comfy chairs to sit down, drink, and relax
One of my favorite spots for coffee, tea and foods. They support local businesses by selling products throughout the store. They are also known for hosting shows, farmers markets and DAA meetings regularly as well.
Quality syrups, and espresso. Love that they have premade breakfast tacos until they last and pastries. Could use some more seasonal drinks but the drinks you order make up for it with the quality ingredients. Atmosphere is awesome, Feels like the old spiderhouse in Austin if you're from the area.
Best coffee shop in San marcos, hands down!! The drinks, treats, and food are sooooo good!! The staff is the absolute best. The atmosphere is cool and quiet. Wake the Dead is a true pioneer of community in san marcos! Love the events and all they do to help the community. Seriously the best coffee shop. I love visiting and I love following them on social media
If you are a cyclist looking for a place to catch your breath this coffee shop is the spot. They welcome to our kind and somehow make you feel like you belong even when you roll in sweaty and questioning your life choices. The staff treats everyone with genuine kindness, the good coffee just resets your soul, and the atmosphere are ideal. It is the perfect place to chill, reset your heart rate, and remind yourself that life is better when you are surrounded by good people, good vibes, and a cup of something warm. Highly recommend it to anyone on two wheels or two tired legs.
Honestly, I didn’t get the hype at first. But this is the spot. Their sweet treats are great! Great selection of loose-leaf teas. Coffee is decent. The baristas are usually pretty chill. I love the community events. The only thing I would change would be the quality of their dairy, but maybe that’s just me—I like high-quality milk.
Fun community coffee house with zombie theme. Loved their banana chocolate chip muffin and look forward to trying more baked goods as well as their robust event calendar. They have bar seating as well as several rooms of tables and a large yard with patio seating. They have a parking lot and there's free street parking nearby.
The atmosphere is very cool. Great coffee, good beer selection and lots of nooks inside and out. There's covered and uncovered patio space live music every once in a while. Lately I've been going for the painting classes with Liz Martinez from Sorry not Sorry cards. She's a blast, a very good teacher and just loads of positive re-enforcement. It was almost as good as going to my therapist! Felt like a million bucks afterwards!
Stopped here on the way back to Houston after a weekend away, and we were so happy we did! The staff was super friendly and made our coffee just the way we liked it. The atmosphere was fun and gothic and the food was great too. Options for indoor and outdoor seating, great prices and plenty of parking. Would love to come back next time we are in the area!
Wake the Dead Coffee House is an exceptional coffee house that is a must-visit for anyone traveling to San Marcos. The coffee is some of the best you'll find in the area, with a variety of unique blends and flavors that are sure to please any coffee lover. In addition to great coffee, Wake the Dead Coffee House also offers a fantastic atmosphere. The space is cozy and inviting, with comfortable seating and tasteful decor that creates a relaxed and enjoyable ambiance. It's the perfect place to catch up with friends, work remotely, or simply unwind with a good book. The staff at Wake the Dead Coffee House is also friendly and knowledgeable. They take the time to explain the menu and make recommendations, and they're always happy to accommodate special requests or dietary restrictions. They go out of their way to ensure that every customer has a great experience. Overall, I highly recommend Wake the Dead Coffee House to anyone looking for excellent coffee in a welcoming and cozy environment. Whether you're a local or just passing through San Marcos, this coffee house is definitely worth a visit.
Solid coffee spot with a good atmosphere. My hot chocolate was delicious, and it was a good place to get some work done. However, the $5 credit card minimum was off-putting (it would have been nice to know about it in advance), the cookie I purchased to get above the limit was dry and lacked flavor. I know a lot of people love this place, but it won't be my go to.
I want to love this place so much because it is a great social setting, has a beautiful patio, and displays all sorts of local art. Their actual products, however, are honestly kind of bad and often ridiculously expensive. They use Katz Coffee, which a lot of places in the area are starting to use because it is a cheap Texas roasting company, and that brand just tastes so weird and gross to me. I also think every time I have gotten something iced, it has been lukewarm for some reason. Most of their pastries are pricey and have too much going on. I think a very small twinkie is like $6 or something. I got charged $5 for a biscotti STICK. Their food is okay. Sourcing from local places is great, but this place takes it too far and the outcome is mediocre and expensive food/drinks. If they changed their coffee and minimized their food menu to focus on quality, it would be my favorite coffee shop. The staff is pretty cool too. OH!! And their WiFi holds like FOUR people, so sometimes studying/working here is impossible. It is very cute though.
I’ve tried spending time at Wake the Dead, hoping for a cozy coffee shop experience, but I’ve been consistently disappointed. The drinks and food are expensive for the quality—$14–15 for a latte and a biscuit feels hard to justify, especially since the food isn’t particularly noteworthy and the baristas don’t provide memorable service. The atmosphere isn’t comfortable either. The decor feels cluttered and leans on indie tropes rather than a unique vibe, the patio is only pleasant in cooler weather, and there are fruit flies inside and out. Seating isn’t comfortable for long periods, the AC struggles, and the music is mostly mainstream indie—it’s not inspiring or conducive to working. I’ve tried using the wifi to write or get work done, but it’s unreliable, especially when the shop is busy, and staff often don’t notice when it’s down. The chatter inside also leaves a lot to be desired; either it’s too quiet or dominated by inane gossip, which makes it hard to focus. Overall, I think this coffee shop might have potential, but at its current state, the price and experience don’t match. I ended up leaving to work elsewhere, which was more productive and comfortable.
Unfortunately, this will likely be my last visit to this coffee shop. I’ve been a loyal customer for over six years, but after today’s experience, I no longer feel valued or appreciated, particularly by the current manager. She came across as very aggressive and rude. She has green and black hair, though I regret not asking for her name. Earlier today, I ordered four drinks and returned to the shop after delivering them to the office, intending to sit down and get some work done. Despite having just made a purchase, the manager seemed displeased that I came back to use my computer. She insisted I buy another drink, which I found unreasonable, especially since others were working with their own reusable stainless steel cups, presumably thinking it was “water” or other drinks. The way she handled the situation was unnecessarily harsh: she grabbed my drink and told me I needed to buy another one. When I addressed how she was managing the situation, she dismissed my concerns, saying, “You run your business how you want, and I’ll run mine.” I was stunned by her lack of professionalism. She ended the conversation abruptly, stating it wasn’t going anywhere, and walked away. All I asked was for her to speak with more kindness and respect. This could have been resolved easily through calm communication and mutual understanding. She even mentioned, “I had several complaints from other customers who told me about my attitude in the past and how rude I can be, and she doesn’t care.” After reviewing the online reviews, this has been an ongoing issue for other customers. I truly hope she doesn’t treat any more new or existing regular customers, plus her staff, the same way for the sake of this business... If I were the owner, I would be seriously looking for a new manager. She clearly doesn’t know how to run a business; this can cause a lot of customers to leave because of her behavior. I hope things will change for the future.
