Opinions de Roadside BBQ San Rafael
This review has to be seen the lens of the cost being worth it. For some people, it's just going to be too expensive, and that's OK, there's probably better options if you need a full meal and over $20 a head is too much of an ask. That being said, if you can afford it, this place is fantastic. The BBQ is varied and fantastic, the staff is very friendly, and the choices of sides are novel and contribute quite a bit to the dining experience. I recommend the hot sausage and the chopped brisket, and I also recommend bringing a friend and getting the 4 entre meal. Enjoy yourself, the atmosphere and the food are both fantastic.
I got the Mr. Brisket. It was nice and juicy, used the habanero bbq sauce and it was great as well. A hidden gem.
I been there multiple times and their barbecue is delicious. I am not into spicy food, but i really like the spicy cheesesteak. Friendly staff. Nice area. And free ice cream.
This was good BBQ. It's better than expected given the location. A casual order at the counter type of place. We got the big platter, and it was more than enough to feed all three of us. Pricey, but it's Marin, so...
The ribs are delicious. The half rack comes with 2 sides and is perfect to share between 2 people. Of the sides I’ve tried, the sweet potato fries, regular fries, coleslaw, mac n cheese, and corn muffins are all great. Highly recommend Roadside!
The food here is GREAT! Love the baked potato and the corn muffins. The guys who work here are truly kind, as well. It's a nice change to eat well in a humble, atmosphere.
Their beef ribs are the bomb! I was there as they were getting ready to close so can't say more. I would return to try other things...but mostly to have their beef ribs again.
I love this place is an understatement
Corn muffins are tiny, but BBQ was good. Fries were crispy and fresh. A bit pricey, but the free soft serve makes up for it. Left full and happy.
Great service. Food was delicious. I bought pulled pork, brisket and chicken for our end of year party at work and EVERYONE loved it. Their coleslaw is authentic, very fresh and crisp. I really liked the potato salad. Flavor and texture of all meats was perfect I will definitely be going back.
Yum! Yum! Yum! Great friendly and attentive service from the moment we walked in. Ordered the Q for Two and had quite a bit leftover. Sides were great, ribs, brisket, and chicken sausages were amazing! Meat fell right off the bones, brisket cut easily with a fork. Delicious smoke flavor, perfect with or without sauce. The soft serve ice cream was a nice treat after our meal. Will definitely be going back!
This place is delicious! Quality ingredients ....real food done right... I've been eating the brisket sandwich for years and never been disappointed. Baked beans or Mac n chz included OMG. Generous portions in Marin. What's not to like? It's clean, the kitchen is up front and open to view. Staff is friendly. Prices are fair. Enjoy!
Great ribs and wings.reasonable prices, delicious sides and desserts. Banana cream pie and Mac n cheese deserve a special mention.
Mac n Cheese and mashed potatoes sides we're awesome, my 1 year old agrees. The pulled pork sandwich was so moist the bread was soaked. Fried we're on par. Cold beer to wash it down. Outdoor seating was nice, nice little spot Northgate needed.
Love their ribs and garlic fries and corn bread muffin. I'm from Texas and this is the closest I can get to good BBQ when I'm here in the bay. Trust me when I say, if you love BBQ, then this place will have you craving it the next day. The prices is affordable and reasonable and the staff is awesome. Also they do have a ice cream yogurt machine inside so when you done with the BBQ you can get you a cup of ice cream for dessert. If you want some BBQ check this place out, oh and the interior decorations are awesome too.

I just love this place. The BBQ sauce here is to die for, nearly black, thick, and delicious. I get the pork ribs for a special treat after shopping at Kohl's, and it's one of those meals where you don't even want to talk to anyone because it would distract you from the experience of eating it. It's sinfully good. Also, the sauteed vegetables are fresh and delicious in their own right, which was a surprise after eating at BBQ places where all you get is a slice of white bread with your meat. Their iced tea is somewhat sweet, and I wish they had unsweetened, but at least it's not the kind that comes out of a coke machine.
Great food, baby back ribs, are delicious free soft serve with every person workers are very nice got my food in less than a minute great service
The food is excellent. Best beef ribs in Marin. Only complaint? I wanted to leave a $5 tip until I noticed that they charged a service charge which is about $1.50. I asked why. They told me that it was because a lot of people don't leave tips, so this would be a mandatory tip. I explained that I would leave $5 but I would not pay both a tip and a service charge. So they insisted on charging me a service charge. So in the future I will not leave a tip and instead I will pay their mandatory service charge.
I’m from Memphis and I felt like this establishment was being back home. Great barbecue sauce I had the Pulled chicken barbecue sandwich and it was phenomenal. Even got sweet tea and free ice cream at the end.

3 out of 5 by absolute BBQ standards. 4 out of 5 by California BBQ standards. Chicken was well prepared, ribs weren't tender enough, brisket was over cooked. Personally not a huge fan of the rub. Sweet potato fries were great, regular fries and corn bread were decent.
Most delicious ribs I've had! Ding for tough to read (shinny) and understand menu (too many choices & simple misspelling error first time reading through it), bathroom soap dispenser was out of soap (a necessity for a place like this. Would be a good idea for them to hand out wet two wet wipes for every person, one to sanitize before eating and the other to wipe off all the BBQ sauce off after the meal.
I'm originally from North Carolina and I would give this place four stars simply for being one of the few barbecue places in California that offers vinegar sauce. I also love the garlic fries! They use minced garlic, so there's no question about if the fries have garlic or not
Visiting San Rafael for a local show. Wanted to get a bite to eat before heading home. Ended up at a little food strip alley we chose Roadhouse. It was delicious pulled pork and garlic fries hot juicy deliciousness!!! A little pricey. Thanks for a tasty lunch!
The best ribs in the area. They aren't slouching with the rest of their meats either. The sauce has become a bit too vinegary for my tastes, but the meat itself is still fantastic. I will say, you can potentially find better, but the next place I have found that could come close is in Corte Madera, and even then I'm not sure it's worth the drive. If you want good barbeque, you could do a lot worse than here.
I loved in Texas for 5 years and have been really disappointed with BBQ I've found in CA but this place was decent! Sauce was a bit too sweet to be Texas style, brisket a little dry but overall pretty good. Service was quick and COVID precautions were good.
This place is way better than you would expect for a restaurant in a mall setting. The baby back ribs and BBQ sandwiches are tender and delicious. Plus they offer free self-serve ice cream for dessert. I also want to point out how friendly the employees are. This is one of our favorite counter service restaurants for dinner.
I had the spicy Texas cheesecake sandwich and it was delicious. The coleslaw was also fresh and perfect. The service is also fast and I will definitely be back again.

Best Texas style BBQ in the region. Brisket and ribs are the best.
best bbq i’ve had since moving to california from the south. sides are a bit on the smaller side for the price but the meat was piled high! Tasted phenomenal. Currently eating my leftovers as I type, lol. Got the bbq brisket sandwich, mac n cheese, greens, baked beans, potato salad, corn bread, and pork ribs. Not a single complaint about quality. Will be back to try those nachos!
Food was good 👍🏼 portions were standard, the customer base was awesome! We sat at different tables but everyone was talking... kinda like if an episode of cheers was shot in a BBQ joint. I was in town for work. When work brings me back, i will eat and hopefully bump into the same kind souls again.

Portion is great, brisket was outstanding Chicken was so so ribs with tender a little bit
Decided to check out Roadside BBQ for lunch today. Had the "Two Way Combo Plate" with baby back ribs, brisket, two sides of french fries and a Diet coke. The food and sauces were all just ok. Flavor, tenderness, juiciness were all below average to average. Some of the baby back ribs were severely overcooked to the point where it was almost jerky like and the brisket was really salty. They do however offer FREE SOFT SERVE and a 20% discount for first responders! I won't be back since it costs too much for the amount of satisfaction acquired by eating here. Baby Back Ribs: 6/10 (Some overcooked) Brisket: 4/10 (Too salty) Diet Coke: 9/10 Corn Bread: 8/10 Price: $21.71 (after the 20% first responder discount)
Decent burgers. Self service. Nothing spectacular but convenient and at good prices

Been here many times and BBQ is really good. However they have gotten really expensive and portions were smaller. Take out, 2 pork plates $21 each , no drinks or extras. $49.50 They add a $4 service charge that they don't tell you upfront. Probably won't be going back.... Not that I can't afford it, just don't like getting screwed over.

Very expensive and didn't care for the tip portion of the billing. You order your food at the counter and then pick up your food at the counter. Seat yourself, get your own silverware and bus your own table. Why on earth would they ask for a tip??? On top of that the place was dirty, sticky floor and sticky table.
I took my kid here today for lunch. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and she got a side of mac and cheese. The sandwich was not good and tasted off. I decided not to eat it, and figured I’d wait for her to eat the mac and cheese. “Mom, there’s hair in it.” Aaannndd then we left without eating more. 🤢
Pulled pork was mushy, as if cooked in a pressure cooker instead of in a smoker. Baked beans and Cole slaw were good, but overall the portions we're quite small. Given all that, the price was on the high side of reasonable.
Hopefully, they were just having a bad day... We ordered online. We were told that it would be brought to our car. It was not. Upon going inside, we were completely ignored, while an elderly lady was already being ignored. Not only were the employees rude, most of the food was not good. We got the Q For Two. The Brisket tasted like it was a day old and reheated. The sausage was hard to eat from being overdone. The best part was the corn bread muffins. -Gregg and Regina
We've ordered from here before and maybe we enjoyed it moreso because our first time was a birthday treat that left a fond memory. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was a profound disappointment on multiple levels. Our order at was a Q For 2. We ordered Baby back ribs (am I crazy or where they St Louis?) unbelievably dry...it actually made me choke. No sauce was provided. "Dry and flavorless" was a reoccurring theme to our meal, and that's if we were lucky enough to get our complete order. We were excited for BBQ and ordered a dish for 2, one of the sides was the Mac and cheese, as much as I hate to say, possibly made so long ago it was dry as bone. We realize we had ordered later in the evening, it was just sad to see the quality of the food at that time.
This place used to be decent, but on last visit the experience was a complete 180. I always ask for my ribs to be left intact, and what received was a rack about a foot long! I guess they’re using smaller pigs? And the brisket? Seemed as if it were steamed. No flavor, very dry, no bark of any kind. On the plus side, their bbq sauce ain’t half bad. Go to Everett and jones in Berkeley or for more Marin type bbq pig n’ pickle is far superior!
Only ordered delivery. Twice. All the meat was dry. Maybe in house it’s better, but the second time I even reheated and go extra sauce for the ribs- dry. Fried chicken was overcooked yet also greasy. Mac n cheese was tastless. Coleslaw was weirdly spicy but was nice and light on mayo. Mashed potato’s were unremarkable. 2 stars because portions were good and it didn’t make me sick.

Even while staving on a cold rainy Sunday night I could find any comfort at this eating establishment. I'll cut to the chase. The meat made me so sad. I didn't know meat could be sliced so thin. I received 7 slices and I'd guess them to be about 1/32 of an inch thick. I've actually had beef brisket in Texas and Missouri and they would laugh if they ever saw this excuse of a brisket plate. Just made me want to cry a little. Oh and there are no condiments on the table and the chef/cook/whatever squirts about 1.17 ounces of BBQ on your brisket for you. Just more tears at this point. For the sides I order the Mac and cheese and beans. The beans were decent. The Mac and cheese was the most strange Mac and cheese I had ever experienced. I walked out about $30.00 poorer and will never go back. I'd give anything to see Chef Ramsey or a self respecting southerner go into this place.
Ok, not sure how many people have been paid off for their good review, but I will say the brisket sandwich was decent, good bread and texture, just flavorless, dependent on bbq sauce. As for the rest, mac and cheese flavorless and gritty, brisket beans were obviously from a can with very little brisket, ribs were ok, and beer was old/stale.
Service was okay, but if you are looking for good barbecue don't eat here. Brisket had no flavor, chicken with tasteless and mushy. It is sad when the best thing about the meal is your side of dry macaroni and cheese.
Maybe it was a bad day because I see everyone put 4 to 5 stars but my food was awful. We ordered 3 different food orders and all were terrible. I wish I didnt spend $40 on food so gross. Judging by the one time I went I say this..... If you want any type of flavor in your food you might have more luck at Arbys.
Horrible food quality! I travel all over the country on business and enjoy eating BBQ. I was excited to see they had Beef Ribs. Instead of becoming one of my favorites, they showed their true selves. Of the 4 beef ribs sent, two were burned so badly that they were inedible. Of the two sides of mac and cheese, one was good but the other was mealy and contained burned cheese. It's obvious that the burned food goes out to delivery, and quality takes a back seat to food cost. Nothing is wasted except their reputation!
Overpriced, but that would be forgiveable if it were good. This places meat is dry and tough- it relies on bbq sauce to be good instead of cooking technique, terribly dissapointing
Yet another over priced spot. Ripoff. Nice staff, decent food. Meager portions compared to the price charged. Ridiculous. Test grade of D-. Drive 10 minutes to downtown San Rafael for the wings, or chicken tenders place. You'll be happy. Great comfort food, priced fairly.
The food wasn't inedible, but it was completely unimpressive. No hint of pride in their food. My salad was wilted, the Mac and cheese was pretty bland, my wife's mash potatoes and gravy taste out of a box. Even her veggie side seemed like boil in a bag. Her beef rib was pretty decent, but I think that's because it's such a fatty cut it kept it's juicies. Wanted to sit in a booth, but they weren't wiped down. I ordered at the counter, had to pick up the food. Is it rude to grab my tip back out of the jar? Won't be back.
