Opinions de Fromin's Deli Santa Monica
We were very happy we stopped in for lunch. The chopped liver appetizer and the tongue and pastrami sandwich were fantastic. The matzo ball soup was somewhat disappointing (but I am somewhat spoiled with a lifetime of fantastic, homemade soup) that had a ridiculously humongous matzo ball. The "light lunch for one" combo was enough food for an entire day and anything but light!
I wish the place was clean and happy. But it's dirty and sad. Someone needs to do an intervention with the owners and tell them it's not ok. Because we care and we'd love to have a vibrant deli nearby. And we can. Just need to care about the business. Or sell it. Or bring in professional management. Staff is great.
Food was exceptional and the sandwich was so big I could not finish it. The service was polite, just not super friendly. We were visiting from out of town and will happily return when we find ourselves in the area again.
This is a great deli. Their restaurant side is also impeccable. Their food is always fresh, and their service is great. You can also order online and pick it up. Best, matzah ball soup in town. They also make great albondigas
Based on our many years of dining at Fromin’s, this has truly been one of our best experiences ever. Juan has been our server most of the time, and he is absolutely amazing. The food is excellent, the service is outstanding, and Juan’s attention to detail never goes unnoticed. Manuel, who brings the drinks and helps take care of the tables, is also a total sweetheart. Everyone there is compassionate, welcoming, and genuinely cares about their customers. Fromin’s is hands down one of the best places to eat in Santa Monica, and we highly recommend it. The entire staff is wonderful—thank you all. —Nahed & Anthony
12/10/2025 I discovered this place today and I was told it's been here for about 40 years or something like that. I went ahead and ordered the brisket dip and pastrami sandwich to see which one is better. I love the hot dip and the meat was tender and juicy, it also came with fries and their ranch dressing was so good. The pastrami sandwich also was very good. Portion wise, it's generous enough. They were both good!
This is a good old Jewish ✡️ delicatessen with authentic dishes. It's often crowded but never too noisy. Lots of parking in the attached lot and on the street. Service is awesome.
WOW! If you are from LA or visiting LA this is a MUST! My dad has been eating here for 40 years and called me to meet him for lunch yesterday at Fromin’s! I work less than 10 mins away and dad asked if he could order for me, so I arrived and a Open Faced Hot Turkey Sandwich was put on the table the second I walked in by a Older bald gentleman who had personality and character that was so warming… he made me smile and like I belonged! The Hot Turkey Sandwich was smothered in Gravy, not too much but not too little, perfect! I had a nice big helping of Mashed Potatoes on the side smothered in Turkey Gravy which was OMG good! I can not say enough about how amazing the Turkey was! I had a side of fresh fruit which was also plentiful… and it didn’t disappoint either, all the fruit was fresh cut and super sweet! I would eat here every single day if I could, do not let the prices scare you…when it comes to good food in LA, anyone should understand to turn a profit you have to charge. I believe that hot turkey sandwich was about $27 but like I said I would eat it every single day if I could! To top it all off when I was leaving I met one of the owners which was a lady who said she owned this place for 40 years as well! She was super nice, but I could tell she was all about business as she should be! I just wanted to make sure I reviewed this place because it isn’t very often you find a special place like this… and when I find a special place I like to review it and make it known because I want it to stay open forever! Don’t think about it, JUST GO AND TRUST ME! I’m 260 pounds for a reason, I like to eat!!!! A huge plus for me as well was knowing this place is the Definition of Kosher! Everything is fresh! It was a Privilege to eat here and I deeply disrespect any person who says otherwise!
Fromin’s Deli in Santa Monica is easily one of the best delis in Los Angeles and without question the best on the West Side. The soups here are the star. The matzo ball soup is excellent with a rich, flavorful broth and dumplings that are light yet satisfying. The vegetable soup is another standout, full of fresh flavor and balance, and there are other soup options that keep the menu interesting. The corned beef is a classic favorite, tender and perfectly prepared, and pairs well with their rye bread. Pastrami, brisket, and turkey are also consistently delicious and show the same attention to quality that runs throughout the menu. Fromin’s recently refreshed the space, which now feels brighter and more comfortable while still maintaining its identity as a real deli. It is not trying to be fine dining, and that authenticity is part of the appeal. Service is always strong. The staff is quick, attentive, and friendly, keeping things moving while still being warm and welcoming. Plates arrive hot and fresh, and the overall pace adds to the feeling of being in a true neighborhood institution. Fromin’s has everything you want in a deli: unbeatable soups, excellent sandwiches, reliable service, and a setting that feels both classic and updated. This is five stars all the way.
Classic delis seem to be going under these days but thank goodness Fromins is still alive and thriving. Their food is fantastic and the portions are substantial. I judge a deli by their corned beef Ruben which I’ve eaten from nyc to LA and their Rueben is frickin delicious. I’ve probably ordered from here 75 times! And only one time did I have a less than excellent experience so i consider it an outlier. Thank you fromins!
Fromin's is a great Jewish deli in Santa Monica. It is in a small strip mall and parking is easy and free. The place can get crowded so we always go on off hours. It is only open until 10:00 pm so get there by 9:30 pm. The place has been around for years and is a favorite of locals. You will love it. They have the nicest service, from the host to all the staff they are ever so kind. They get your order right and they check on you. They are wonderful for kids. They also have a great cold deli to take things home and a wonderful little bakery. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have a big menu. Their sandwiches are just the best, always with fresh meat and great bread. Every year they have a wonderful Passover menu. What items are Kosher, I have no idea. They also have Thanksgiving dinner. They will cater for you if you want. Their bagels are so good. And the topping, lox, salmon, cod, smoked whtefish salad, and of course cream cheese. Their Reuben sandwiches are some of the best. I love their brisket. Their hot turkey sandwich, open faced with mashed is so very good. For dinner, all of it is good. They make great fish and chips, I love their fries. They have some good steaks and oh the Roast brisket of beef s super yummy. You will love this place.
One of a handful of famous Jewish delis in Los Angeles. Fromin’s is a bit different in that it’s located on the west side in Santa Monica. It’s not nearly as busy as Canter‘s, Langer’s, or Nate and Al’s but it does get quite busy at certain times. They have a large free parking lot attached otherwise it’s not hard to find street parking in this part of town. We stopped in a few days before Christmas and it was quite crowded inside, but we were able to be seated right away, and our server was very polite. As many other reviews have mentioned portion sizes are quite large here although prices are a bit more expensive than they should be. I feel all the delis around LA are at the same price point. It’s more expensive than a diner but less expensive than a trendy dinner restaurant. We usually expect to spend about $75 for two people. Just like most delis they have a giant menu filled with all sorts of options leaning toward Kosher but also have non-Kosher options as well. We have stopped in for dinner before, but this time was our first visit for breakfast. For my breakfast, I had to try one of their everything bagels, which was as good as expected but for my entrée I chose a new combo. I ordered the Eggs Benedict, but I substituted the ham for a burger patty split in half. It was a great call, and I’m glad the kitchen could accommodate my request. The flavors were really good and honestly, I don’t have a reason to give Fromin’s less than five stars. It is a bit more expensive than I think it should be, but as someone who has lived in Los Angeles for many years, it’s something that I’ve come to expect, just part of living in this town. Overall one of the better delis and definitely worth visiting given that there are only a handful of these classic delis left. I would recommend to any deli fan and plan to be back in the future.
Ordered soup for pickup. I got the vegetable soup and it was absolutely delicious. Wonderful broth and completely full of vegetables. It was ready very quickly. Plenty of parking. Okay just need to update. I've had the soup several times and each time it is served with delicious rye bread which I cannot have as I'm gluten-free. I mentioned that this time on my online order. Fromins countered with two large pieces of delicious gluten-free rye bread. So this now means I can have the sandwiches that I've been drooling over... Yay! Game changer.
Came for breakfast first visit. They food is excellent quality and taste. So much to choose from all sound so good. Took home some items from the deli too. Our server was so attentive I would come back based on that, but luckily the food is delicious. Visit if you want to enjoy a good meal.
parking is tight, not enough spaces at the front. Our waiter was slow and we waited for drinks (Diet coke and hot water with lemons) for 10minutes. Food is very delicious and worthy every penny.
I was hankering for a good pastrami sandwich so tried this place based on the beloved reviews. Classic Jewish deli and everyone in there was enjoying themselves. Good sign. I ordered a half sandwich and it was divine. I wish the breading had held together better from the juiciness of the pastrami. Coleslaw was also pretty good. It was all super rich for my taste. Glad I only ate half cause a whole would have made my colon a rotting corpse.
Love the variety of the menu, so many options. Breakfast ,lunch, and dinner...plus takeaway bakery. Very old school or retro and has been in Santa monica for years... Very loyal old time clientele... Great service n friendly helpful staff. The prices are very reasonable and menu has many old school favorites! Top up coffee and ice tea, plus beer n wine option with a meal.
About as old school as it gets. Fun lunch and very “solid”. Pastrami good not great - but good. Not the home made brined and slow roasted - but good - not too salty. Chicken soup good - might use too much stock vs natural - but very good - not too salty - great pickles - slaw good a fried good but cold. They never gave me silverware - had to grab it myself - forgot my pickles - but waiter was so nice - such is life. All in all great heat - not epic - but good. * Restaurant could use carpet and refresh - but I guess something charming about the OG style.
Fromin's is a CLASSIC Jewish Deli in Santa Monica with plenty to choose from for every diet in an atmosphere that feels like it hasn't changed since the spot opened...It's old school but not run down...as in when you walk in it's like you're transported through time back to the hey-day of this kind of spot. We were seated at the closest booth to the door...good I guess if we needed to make a quick exit but generally I prefer to sit deeper into the restaurant to feel like I'm really there and not be bothered by so much foot traffic and noise and weather from the door opening and closing. I had a vegetarian version of their Reuben sandwich...basically, just the reuben made with their veggie patty instead of meat. This is a go-to for me at a deli like this (and as a vegetarian. It really was perfect and nostalgic and, like a good boy, I ate the whole thing. The fries it came with also were cooked perfectly and I was quite full when I was done. It came with a generous plate of coleslaw...that's great if you like coleslaw! There's so much to choose from, breakfast all day and other Jewish staples, blintzes, potato pancakes etc. So comfort food in a deep connecting to your ancient memories kind of way. Don't ever change, Fromin's!
Asked for the roast beef well done. Confirmed a couple of times. Did not receive roast beef well done. I want to post a picture, but there is no upload link. Girls in early 20s annoyed that she did not get a tip in a take out order.
We’ve been coming here while in town for 10 years - but unfortunately Fromin’s has really decreased in quality and service. The pastrami sandwich is half the portion it used to be and is $25. It was good, but not enough. The fryer oil must have been a week old, the fries were bad. Even worse, I ordered a vegetable (vegetarian) omelette and it was delivered with HAM in it. When I opened it I noticed it and it took 10 minutes to flag the server down to tell him. There was barely an apology - I was brought a new omelette after the person I was with finished their meal. The next one had something else in it. What if I was allergic to an item? I do not consume meat, but BEWARE if you HAVE A SEVERE ALLERGY. The bill did not even offer any kind of discount for this - literally nothing. The cookie was $5.50 and used to be $3+. Ok. The cookie was good. But they could have taken off the cookie or one of the sodas that totaled $10 (2 glasses). Nothing. The server was not responsive and disappeared, we kept having to get someone else to get him. We felt like we were not wanted as customers even though we’ve been here many times. I left a tip because the busser was working so hard and it’s unfair to him but honestly I regretted tipping because of how bad the experience was. We will not be returning anymore and the main reasons are the ham which is unsafe for me and the horrible rude service.
The Food was a big disappointment.. We ordered 2 pastrami sandwich .It was cold and because they put the cole slaw to the bottom of the sandwich it was soggy and bread fall a part.Pastrami looks like come from the bag and they heated in water. Matzo ball soup had no flavor at all. We love to go to several delis and never see this way tastless. WE also ordered chicken in the pot and it smells very strange. The chicken was very hard to pull apart. Sorry they are still in the bussines.
