Opinions de Ken Of Japan Simi Valley
The staff is always so nice. The food is great, you must get the fried rice! Teppan chefs are the best, always interact with the kids. California rolls are sooo good too! The inside is a little older and cpuld be updated but overall good experience.
Eat here a lot, just for fun and some family occasions. Excellent food, good show, and decent service. Service can be hit or miss at times though. I adore the Teppan Fried Rice, and usually get 2 orders, lol.
Great food, prices are rgood. I got the large sashimi platter for like 30 dollars and it's more than enough to fill you up. They have a beer and sake special everyday and have a relaxing Japanese hibachi venue that's very nice. The chefs and servers are awesome I recommend it to anyone who wants good sushi
Get the lunch special it's good, has a lot of food and won't break the bank. I think it comes with a salad, sushi, teriyaki chicken and rice for under 7 to 8 dollars. Ken is a awesome host and the rest of the staff is friendly. Sushi bar is great too.
Enjoyed a delicious dinner cooked right at the table. Cook so entertaining to watch. Fish so fresh with fried rice, and veggies. First time here, and won't be my last. Already planning the next meal.
sat at sushi bar around 645 pm , no one else sitting at bar. had some great sushi and had plenty of elbow room. not goin to say what day i went because i want it to be status quo.
I'm a long time resident of Simi, but never ate here until recently. Looking for something different, we ordered delivery from Door Dash. I was very impressed with the quality and taste of the food (even delivered!). We ordered their teriyaki steak dinner and a couple sushi rolls. I'd never had sushi delivered, and was not disappointed. So we now HAD to eat in restaurant, because it could only be better, right? Right! The service was good, fast, and polite. We tried a couple other dishes. Everything was great. Their miso soup is amazing! I usually tend to play with it rather than drink it, but theirs is delicious! The only slightly negative thing is that there's a fishy smell in the restaurant (I realize this is a sushi restaurant). I don't eat seafood but my husband does and everything we've tried has been great. Definitely will visit again. Edit: In the time since I posted this, KoJ has become one of my favorite restaurants. I've ordered many different items and none have disappointed. I'd give 6 stars if I could.
I live in Texas, but this is my favorite restaurant on Earth. The food is perfect and the owner is ALWAYS in a bad mood. If u get a to-go order, don’t be offended if he treats u terribly, that just him. He’s a national treasure
The food was delicious and very filling. The Teppan chef was fun and entertaining, the whole family had a good time watching him prepare the food and interacting with us. I ordered the swordfish with fried rice. The freshly made fried rice looks delicious.
One of my absolute favorite places to eat in the valley. Love it here! Such good food.
Many people say this is their favorite restaurant in Simi Valley and now I know why! The chefs are masterfully talented, all of the staff is friendly, and the food is fantastic!
Went here for our anniversary ❤. The fried rice had great flavor. Our cook was fun and telling jokes, will definitely bring the whole family next time.
First time dining here. Food was delicious had the chicken and scallop combination. Our chef was fantastic and really made the dinner preparation a fun time!
The Chef's are fun to watch cook as they play jokes and show off their skills. I ordered the NY steak and shrimp dinner combination and it was delicious.
We've been eating here for almost 20 years and the interior of the building is starting to show its age, but we had teppanyaki and the food was still as delicious as we remember. The chef didn't have too much to say, but presentation was great and the wait staff were fast at refills of drinks and providing the side dishes timely.

The food is freaking amazing here and I recommend trying them out when you get a chance.
Amazing food and service from the Hibachi team. Everything always comes out delicious and waitress is always attentive and bringing refills/checking up on us despite being a table of only 2. One of if not the best hibachi spot in the county.
It's an experience, and the servers here are awesome, playing with fire is not a small deed.
Love love love the food! Great chefs! Philip is awesome! The service is great! Had another great meal! Shrimp and Mahi Mahi combo with the best fried rice around.
They deserve five stars, the food was delicious. The chef was entertaining just a very pleasant time. We will definitely be back.

We enjoyed a fun and entertaining meal sitting at a Teppanyaki cooking table. Multiple courses keeps the meal going before your eyes. I have entertained out of town guests here on occasion and always a fun experience.
Food is excellent. Highly recommend the curry and fried tofu. The wait for food tends to be a little long, but it's worth it in the end. This rating is for the dining side only, as it's been many years since I've experience their teppanyaki.
Had a lovely dining experience!! Front of house staff could use a bit of a personality. No eye contact no smile hardly talked and the front was jammed. Waited quite a while for our reserved spot. The cut rolls from the sushi bar were fabulous!! Had the California roll and the tempura roll….gobbled them right up. Out chef was super nice and entertaining. Steak and shrimp was wonderful!!! Can’t wait for our next visit.
First time here. Had lunch with a friend. I really liked the monkey brains. My friend liked his lunch special but not the soup or dressing on the salad. Service was quick. Place is clean. Nice presentation of meal items. Will return & try other items. Recommend.
Love Ken of Japan. My favorite sushi place in Simi. I know there are probably better places but for me, I've always had a great meal and time here.
The food here is great because it taste fresh. The service is great. The owners are pleasant but not overly engaging. They are very prompt to pick up dirty dishes and refill drinks. The Tepan chefs are talented and funny! We go here often and the leftovers are fantastic.

Service was just OK. Chef was good and polite. The food was satisfactory. Don't order the beef. I've tried several cuts and always comes out tough. Don't think they use quality beef.
We go there at least once a year. The food is very good, but the service at the counter is terrible. We stood there at the counter for more than 20 minutes trying to tell them we were there for our party, and they just kept walking back-and-forth and not speaking to us. Finally, a guy came up and my wife tried to say our party was there and the guy interrupted her and walked away again. That’s why when you call here hardly anybody ever answers the phone. Honestly, it’s not like the people that work there aren’t doing anything, they are just understaffed.
Went to do a pickup today. I walked in and saw an older man up front. I said hi, I’m here for a pickup and said my name. He looked at me and just pointed across to where the bag was and that’s it! Not a word came out of his mouth, or a thank you! Extremely rude and unprofessional. If you don’t want my business, no problem. I won’t be back…and the food was cold too. Learn some respect sir.
I been going here for 10+ years ... Recently moved back from being in another country for 4 yrs. did a delivery for here for UberEATS I was ignored forever multiple times a workers passes by me without knowledging me no hi or I'll be right with you I came back today with my 15yr old son for lunch there prices always be close to half of the dinner price it was almost $30 or more for per person for lunch. I compared it to the dinner menu it was $3-9 higher of a difference we walked out and went to reds bbq for lunch reds bbq was a lot of food and delicious! very disappointed with Ken of Japan reading reviews about being ignored and being Treated poorly and the SUPER high food price rise I get it if they rise it by $5 or more or whatever everywhere is but it was too much for me for a " lunch special "
We stopped in for dinner, not teppanyaki or the sushi bar. Perhaps that's where Ken of Japan shines. But our experience reminded me of when I lived in the Midwest; restaurants like this defined my whole perception of Japanese food. The menu is large, but everything is so uninspired. The food is bland, the presentation is sterile and haphazard, the service is impersonal, the atmosphere is dated. The same 3 songs from Kpop Demon Hunters played for the entire 45 minutes we were there, like even the music was as lazy as the restaurant. With that said, it's still, you know, fine. The miso soup and salad were standard. The entree combinations were as advertised, but don't expect a bento box. I don't know, there's nothing really to love here, in my opinion, our experience was just aggressively average.

We were greeted by a man who looked moody, directed us to a bar with his hand gesture only. Once we were seated, there was a menu paper on the table we started to fill our orders on, but soon the sushi chef told us it's a wrong form, gave us another one. He never spoke to us otherwise, no smile, and then when we took the paper back to order more, he grabbed the paper from our hands stating "I will give it to you", and gave it back to us 10 minutes later for no apparent reason (we were done with our first round of "all you can eat" and that is why we took the paper back). This is a second time we went to this business in 20 years, probably will be our last, we will keep going to our regular sushi place where everyone is smiling, greeting you and have better communication skills, basically better customer service.

Food on the sushi side of the restaurant is just ok, and the service is completely terrible. We asked for beef instead of chicken in a noodle dish, and they weren't able to accommodate that request... Even though they have beef dishes. This was the second time coming here, and both times, an order comes out wrong. Each time we've gone, we literally only saw our server twice - otherwise they're nowhere to be found and you think they've forgotten you exist.
Food was not terrible but the service was. Our waiter was rude, impatient, and seemed annoyed by our questions. Not how my mom wanted to be treated on her birthday.
For decades, we were regulars here. The entire family enjoyed our Tepan visits. Over time the quality has diminished while the prices have shot through the grimy-looking roof. I went here for a dinner for four and the bill was like $300. The food and entertainment is sort of decent but the place seems like it needs a deep cleaning. The server people seem to be uninterested in their customers as most of them walk around with frowns. The all you can eat sushi seems to be attracting some customers, but not the same clientele of their glorious past! Too bad!!

The worst restaurant I swear. I wish I could give them a -10. The owner is so rude. I use to love this place but when he took over this place went all the way down. I placed my order at 730 and told me it would be ready in 15 minutes. Didn’t get my food until 845 with no apologies. They don’t greet you, say hello how can I help you anything. The food is just ok. Not worth the horrible customer service to go back. Never again!!!!!
Long wait. We got to the restaurant at 06:30 pm we got seated 08:00 pm . People that arrived after us got a table before us I pointed this out to them and they said sorry and that was that. The other folks in our table had the same thing done to them. Food was good but not worth the wait.
Customer service used to be great, after covid. Prior entering you will be lucky to get a welcome or a hello. Call me crazy, but I will not pay someone for poor and rude customer service. To the next…. Good for people to know, how they actually treat people!
The birthday celebration from Hell. Both the food and service are terrible. Don't waste your money. I've been here twice. Pre-Covid, I was at the sushi bar and the sushi rolls were good. Everyone had a good time. No complaints. Flash forward several months, on Oct. 26th, I returned. Post-Covid, the sushi bar is not operational. We were seated at a table within view of the hostess/waitress. We were literally the only customers seated on one side of the restaurant. We ordered quite a bit of sushi and the chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki was inedible. Visually, the chicken didn't look right, which was off-putting. It was more gray than brown. Never seen anything like it. It's like it didn't brown properly. It was sliced so very thin lengthwise that it was overcooked and very, very tough to chew. The grill marks looked more like the ones that are made on a small indoor grill (I own one), rather than a professional grill. The sauce was off. No one at the table liked it, or wanted to eat it. The California Rolls also were not right. The seasoning was not bad, but the rolls appeared to be missing something (no idea what since I don't make California Rolls....I do buy them, however, frequently, and these were exceptionally high in what tasted like mayonnaise and underseasoned in whatever gives California Rolls that tang). My husband ordered a salmon skin hand roll. I didn't try it. I did see him take a bite of it and then quickly remove something from his mouth. He said the salmon skin was so tough he thought he was biting down on a piece of plastic. It wasn't plastic and he didn't finish the roll. Then.... if all of that wasn't enough.... we never saw our waitress. After waiting several minutes for her to appear (so we could get our beverages refilled), I finally took my cell phone out of my purse and called the restaurant in hope that she would return to the front of the restaurant and answer the phone. She didn't. I watched as another woman answered the phone. I informed the woman that answered the phone that we were customers seated to the left of the restaurant and we'd like to see our waitress. The woman that answered the phone came to our table and refilled our drinks. At the end, our original waitress said that she was bringing out a birthday ice cream for our son. It never came. We got tired of waiting for it. We got up and left. I spent 70-something dollars on dinner and went home and ate a sandwich. That's never happened to me before. You will never convince me that a professional sushi chef made that sushi, or that a properly trained chef prepared that chicken teriyaki. We won't be back.
We placed our order online and spent $130 on food and left a hefty tip. When we went to pick up the food it was sitting on a bench next to the door (we ordered hot food and it's 40 degrees outside) Then when we started eating we found at least 3 short, fine, straight hairs in all of our food. (Hibachi vegetables, vegetable sushi roll, and a salad) When I called to try to fix the issue they refused to accept it was them and that it was from us. (None of our hair is like that). Then when I asked them to make it right the manager started yelling at me saying they weren't going to give us cash. (Weird assumption). After saying I wasn't even interested in that and that we paid in card anyways, he said he could give us a 30% off credit and when I asked for proof he continued to yell and say he would email me and then he hung up.
Update (2022) Recently placed order and owner refused to make my order and was very rude to the person I sent to pick it up. Previous Review (2018) Really fun they let's try some off the show which sometimes people fail to bounce the egg in the show for the fried rice. It's really fun and the staff Is amazing. Food is excellent and it's a very good price compared to other restaurants.
We went to Ken of Japan to celebrate a birthday and left regretting the decision to waste our money here. The food was good, but not worth the lack of service. Our waiter whom we later found out is the owner was very rude and completely lacks any customer service. He rushed us through service and made us feel very unwelcome. We would have stayed and ordered dessert and more drinks, but not after our interaction with him. He did nothing to acknowledge our celebration. We asked the staff when leaving what’s going on with him and they all said that he’s always rude like that. We will definitely never be back!
This place used to be so great! Now the food is dried out and very low quality. The tempura was tasteless & rubbery! tiny pieces of shrimp & veggies smothered in batter. The soup was the only good thing!
Placed online order through their website at 12:47, email said it would be ready at 1:07. I arrived at 1:15, stood there for 6 minutes and received no greeting, no eye contact, nothing. Just workers walking by me repeatedly to serve dine-in people. A guy walks around the corner and drops a bag of food on a bench, says my name. I go pick it up and say thank you, and I asked him if utensils were inside the bag. He totally ignored me and just walked off. Didn't even look at me. You don't greet your customers, thank them for spending their money there, or say "have a nice day" ?? Really?? I'm not expected a red carpet or anything but at least ACKNOWLEDGE MY EXISTENCE IN YOUR RESTAURANT! Completely off-putting. We're still in a pandemic and you're pushing customers away. That's fine I'll go somewhere else since you clearly don't want my money.
If I could give this place a 0 I would. Very disappointed. First time coming here with my family and handicapped brother service was horrible guy who sat us down didn’t even great us. Just showed us to our table. When we went to order I wanted something off the appetizers and as we were never told what part of the menu was considered food to cook in front of you we ordered what looked appetizing to us; but the guy or owner said really rudely if you don’t order anything on the tapaci you have to leave to the other side and order from the menu. I told him this was our first time being there and he just didn’t care to be like o look this is how this works so my whole family got up and walked out.
I ordered Shrimp with vegetable. The food was so salty. Next morning, my blood pressure went up to 188. I woke up with a bad headache. Terrible food!!! Someone must poured tons of salt and soy sauce in it. They should be careful what they are doing...
This is the worst sushi I ever had in my life. I order Toro (fatty tuna, very pricey) it looks nice but when I went to bite into it it was inedible I couldn’t even chew it. Worst sushi experience I’ve ever had in my life do NOT go here
I ordered a salmon and chicken plate. The salmon came to me half done. The middle was completely not fully cooked through and when I talked to the manager and owner about it, he did not try to fix the issue for me but rather decided to tell me that I have been the only customer to complain about the salmon. Highly unprofessional. It’s a shame because I’ve been a loyal customer for years. How you treat customers says a lot about a business and this was quite shocking.
Walked in friday night at about 845pm for a pickup order. Everyone who works there completely ignored me and had very angry looks on their faces. Terrible service and unfriendly atmosphere. Food was garbage
