Excellent food and upgrade to deluxe room. It was a lovely surprise for my birthday. We hope to visit again Thank you.
Had a lovely one night stay here. Staff were friendly and efficient. The room was beautifully decorated and very well maintained. Sunday roast was excellent and the bar area was great and so pleased our dog was allowed too. Breakfast was very good and set us up for the day. Will definitely be back.
We had such a fantastic stay at The George hotel. Fantastic service, everything was no trouble. The staff are super friendly. Our room was amazing (The Midsummer murder room ) , I would definitely recommend staying . I would certainly book again if we were in the area .
we had a totally fabulous 1 night stay at The George Hotel. The Queen bedroom was right on the ground floor and easy to get to. The bed was super comfortable, the bathroom was lovely with great shower and delightful soaps/creams. Nespresso machine in the room. The breakfast was absolutely amazing!! Great location right across from the Abbey (which is worth a visit). Highly recommend.
We had SUCH a lovely stay here! Would highly recommend. The rooms were beautiful and very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful and accommodated our large group which was great. The food was yummy (the risotto was excellent). And the walks we could do straight from the doorstep were beautifully scenic. Hope to come back again :)
Absolutely loved my room, loved the hand written note and loved the nice touch of the lovely radio playing when I got in. The restaurant was lovely too and the food was great. Could not recommend it enough.
Would like to give a special mention to Aaron. From the moment he checked me to every drink he served, treated me like a human not a 'customer' and was subtle, discreet (brought the drink to my table when I nipped to the bathroom) even though it was not necessary. Thank you
Spent a great couple of nights here. Ate in the restaurant and food was delicious. Thanks Andrew for looking after us.
We stayed for 3 nights the end of June, the accommodation was really lovely decorated, a comfy bed, nice bathroom with an expresso machine. An excellent breakfast with a wide selection of food. We ate in the restaurant every night as the food and service were very good. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. Dorchester on Thames is close enough to visit Oxford, Blenheim Palace as well as Henley on Thames. There are plenty of footpaths close by including the Thames Path. We will definitely return
This is our third annual overnight at The George. Always lovely clean rooms, helpful staff , and a beautiful location. Food menu isn’t vast BUT food is really good. The building is stunning with wonderful history. It’s quirky , with uneven floors and equally uneven walls. Truly lovely place to stay. Have read some reviews and everyone has different expectations. But if you want authentic, historic , quirky this is the place to go. Dorchester abbey is a must to visit too, which is directly opposite. We will be back next year !
STAY Fabulous room, staff friendly & helpful as always, look forward to our next visit to one of your hotels
STAY at The George- it’s fantastic! Aaron and James made us so welcome when we checked in and found us a room with a bath. They looked after us at dinner too - service was superb and the food excellent. I managed to leave some jewellery in our room - Andrew was so kind and helpful; contacting me and sending it on
Really enjoyed our two nights here, we stayed in one of the annexe rooms which are absolutely excellent, really comfortable and well equipped. Perfect location for exploring the Thames, a visit to Henley and Wallingford definitely recommended and Oxford is only half an hour away.
The hotel is very well presented in a lovely location opposite the abbey, with plentiful car parking. The staff were very welcoming, and the dining areas were very attractive, fresh and clean. The food was excellent, and it was very reasonably priced. Overall, a great experience.
I live in Reading but we sometimes come here for lunch or evening meal as part of a day out. Speed of service can be hit and miss. And recent Xmas day lunch with a large group was outstanding from start to finish. Food, service and atmosphere all excellent.
STAY I don’t even know where to start. I booked The George Hotel as a family get together to celebrate my Mums 65th Birthday and let’s just say it is most definitely memorable for all the right reasons. We all 6 of us had the most incredible stay. The hotel itself is wonderful, set in an idyllic little village, the rooms are immaculately clean and well decorated (in fact the cleanest hotel room I have EVER stayed in). The food was exemplary, everything we ate was beautifully presented and didn’t disappoint on flavour or value for money. My mum is celiac and the staff were so accommodating and knowledgeable, helping her with any changes that needed to be made to her dishes. The staff really made our stay so special. All of them so welcoming and friendly from the moment we arrived and by the time we left (2 days later) we felt like locals that had been visiting the pub for years. I honestly can not praise the team enough, special shout out to Andrew, Aaron, William & Ramesh who really looked after us, nothing was too much trouble for them. The most fabulous experience and we all look forward to returning. Thank you so very much for making my mums 65th Birthday and our entire stay so memorable.
Stay. We really enjoyed our one night stay at the George hotel Dorchester on Thames. Very friendly and welcoming arrival, stylish pet friendly room allocated, perfectly laid out, cosy with everything you need, clean and with dog bed bowl and treats. All the team were helpful friendly and looked after us so well despite being a busy evening. All the dishes were well prepared very flavoursome, the crème brûlée was stunning. Breakfast was relaxed and efficient. Andrew and his team delivered a great stay and we will return.
Had a really excellent stay at this hotel. It was warm and sumptuously appointed Our room was first class with wonderful furnishings And even a Roberts Radio!!! Sunday morning sounds of birds and Dorchester Abbey chimes along with Radio three and proper Nespresso coffee just did everything good for us. Our Saturday night meal was fantastic The staff were really attentive, friendly and helpful - It was just the perfect getaway, so thank you!!! Highly recommend recommended
We've found a really gem here in Dorchester on Thames. Very helpful booking online regarding requirements, a great welcome to our accessible room for us and our companion dog Walt. Everything was just as requested. A beautifully decorated and clean twin room including a welcome pack and bed for Walt. Breakfasts were excellent. Everything was available from Continental to an extensive fully-cooked menu. The dinner menu covered all bases, well cooked, presented and served. In our opinion, a well run establishment with friendly professional and exceptionally helpful staff. Worth the 5 stars we gave it. We're coming back...
Stayed here for 1 night due to working near by. Price very reasonable, staff were super friendly, plenty of parking, clean room and everything you needed inside the room. Great gluten free food options. Only thing I would say is bring some ear plugs as the walls are paper thin as I could hear everything going on next door.
Only stayed over for 1 night, for work. Can't fault the service and hospitality. Was a very nice room, even had a hand written personal note, welcoming you for your stay. Clean. Menu had good options and food was very delicious. Would definitely come back for a personal visit and stay longer.
We had a truly wonderful stay at The George Hotel in Dorchester, made exceptional by the fantastic staff. From the moment we arrived, everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel completely at home. Nothing was too much trouble, and they genuinely went out of their way to cater to our every need. Travelling with a dog and a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the team were super helpful, thoughtful, and accommodating, which made the whole experience stress-free and enjoyable. Their kindness and attention to detail made our celebration feel even more special. The food was another real highlight — the portions were very generous, and the Nepalese chef makes absolutely incredible curries that were packed with flavour and clearly made with care. A huge thank you to the entire team for making our stay so memorable — we can’t wait to return.
This was a birthday meal for my partner. He had signed up for the loyalty scheme for the Coaching Inn hotels group and, true to the offer, his main course (steak) and pudding were free. Obviously had to buy my food but it was all very well prepared, cooked and served, so no complaints at having to ‘pay my way’. The meal really was good and I loved the waitress who was great - It is so nice to find a youngster(!) who can talk to customers. We hadn’t been to this restaurant in a little while, but the whole experience has made us determined to visit again in the very near future.
A return visit to this lovely hotel in a quaint little village opposite Dorchester Abbeywith plenty of parking. Andrew & his happy helpful team do everything possible to ensure you enjoy your stay, special thanks to Saskia for sorting the wi fi for me ! The rooms are beautifully furnished, comfortable beds, great bathrooms, good shower & nice toiletries, TV & a Nespresso coffee machine, what more do you need ! The quality of the food at breakfast & dinner is excellent, well cooked & very tasty & always served with a smile. We will definitely be back again, 10/10.
My girlfriend and I stayed in Room 108, the Aston Martin Room. The room and service were outstanding—immaculately clean, extremely spacious, and truly luxurious. Overall, it was an amazing experience from start to finish. We would definitely recommend this stay to friends and family in the future.
Lovely coaching inn in the quiet and pretty village of Dorchester-on-Thames. We stayed in "room 101"(!) with the four poster bed. The room was great, as was dinner and breakfast. Highly recommended.
Thank you to Aaron and his team for the wonderful service and the interesting conversations. It was a pleasure for us to visit your restaurant and the bar. I can't forget the pie! Next time we stay in your hotel. Best regards Big Frank and Martina from Germany 🇩🇪
Stayed 2 nights last weekend it's a gem ! As is the village ! Staff brilliant and friendly! Food lovely! Well done !
We absolutely loved our stay here. Our room (111) was really spacious, well decorated and cozy. There was a lot of attention to detail, which felt very luxurious. For example, the radio was on when we arrived, with classical music playing. Loved it! We ate at the restaurant on both nights, where the service was perfect and the atmosphere relaxing. The breakfast room is particularly beautiful. The hotel is a 10-min drive to one of Oxford's Park and Rides, so very convenient while being in a peaceful village. All that, for a really honest price. We would absolutely come back!
Warm welcome from duty manager Mark, Room was available early on request. Sam was very helpful from housekeeping when I asked her about the different room types available. John behind the bar was very polite and attentive. Delicious pie of the day served in the main restaurant beside the bar. Super comfy beds with options of softer pillows available in the room. Great products that could be purchased. Fantastic breakfast as images show. Overall very pleased with our stay and will be returning. Exceptional service throughout at a very affordable rate.
Oct 2025 Update Another fantastic stay in a beautiful room that was spotless and tidy. The luxurious amenities didn't disappoint - the amazing smelling body wash, shampoo, and conditioner tempted me to indulge in a long, relaxing bath. The hot chocolate was a lovely touch, especially after a chilly walk on a cold day. My only gripe is that the room wasn't as dark as I'd like, despite the thick blackout curtains, and there was a noticeable cold draught due to the gap under the door (as shown in the photos). However, this didn't deter us - we'll definitely be back for another stay! Oct 2024 The George Hotel is an absolutely stunning building with so many little and big things that make the whole stay a wonderful experience. Each room is individually themed such as the James Bond room and the Midsomer Murder room. I stayed in a room dedicated to the British rowers who train locally. The room was very clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable with a variety of pillows to choose from. There was also a Nespresso machine, instant coffee, good biscuits and bottled water available in the room. I could not resist having a bath with the duck provided, a lovely touch! Hot breakfast the next day was cooked to order so in the interim a visit the buffet area offered croissants, cereals, yogurts, fruit etc. The fruit salad had beautiful small bites of watermelon in it, which was so refreshing. The cooked breakfast arrived quickly after, and was presented beautifully. The spinach was wilted perfectly, and not at all watery. The vegan black pudding was surprisingly very good. The vegan sausage was also delicious. From me, the whole experience was super apart from the public toilets in the restaurant area. They really do need a deep clean. It is a shame that the overall attention to detail that is so obvious across the hotel seems to be lacking in this one area.
We loved this hotel! The town couldn’t be prettier and the hotel was much more than what we expected. Room and bathroom have new decor, full of character and attention to detail. We took advantage of a special offer that included breakfast and one night dinner. The pub and restaurant are great as well and so is the food! It ended up being a great value for money! 😉
This is a hidden gem! Beautiful building, beautiful room, great dinner in a cosy pub setting - floors were wonky but definitely original and fun. Love this place!
STAY forgot to put the magic word. I also forgot to say how great the staff were, super efficient and friendly.
Called in for lunch and a drink - good menu and we'll prepared food.
We stayed in the Oak room which was amazing - has to be seen to be believed! Fantastic value for what it is! They also accommodated us with an early check in which really helped (there is a charge for this). Only slight let down was service at Breakfast but wasn’t bad enough to ruin our stay. We will definitely be back!
Came for family lunch - delicious food in a beautiful setting. Thank you very much!
Our friends stayed here and they said the rooms were great. Staff were lovely.
Lovely lunch today, good menu and great service.very pleasant staff and very helpful
Lovely place, fab food. We had a great stay. Highly recommend
The food is outstanding and the setting outside, especially on a sunny summer's day is exceptional. The staff are very friendly, and the range of beers is robust. Recommended if in the area for an evening meal.
A very nice ancient hotel with very nice and helpful staff. Plenty choice of fresh prepared food.
Amazing room and service for my entire stay. When I got to my room after a long day at work I was greeted with calming music on the radio and a beautifully made and comfy bed, really made me feel at home and cosy. Had three good meals but the fish and chips was a real 10/10. I travel a lot for work but this was the first time I was actually happy returning to the hotel each night. Would recommend to anyone
Excellent traditional pub. Just stopped for a few pints nice staff and ambience.
A nice place, our room was the deluxe suite and it is impressive...when it was heated. It is in an old barn type annexe with 18in thick walls. Sadly on our second night there was an electrical failure knocking off the boiler so we were freezing. Fortunately back on for our final night but it marred our visit somewhat. No compensation other than a couple of drinks.
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, Bruce couldn't do enough for us. He went out of his way to accommodate our requests and was extremely friendly whenever we bumped into him. The rooms were comfortable, with all the amenities you would expect. The bathroom had recently been refurbished to a good standard.
We had a very pleasant few days of holiday at the hotel. Very friendly staff and manager, who let us feel very welcome. The surroundings are beautiful, we walked for 8 miles through the beautiful landscape of the Chilterns. Plenty of choise for breakfast, nice food in the evening. Very recommenrable.
Room very small door not open perfectly because hit the bed. Bathroom heater not work and there is very cold. Bed comfy and pillows 50/50 not bad. You can order on menu for breakfast this is good and delicious. Decorations very nice. And very clean. Only they gave to us most small room maybe in hotel 🤷🏻♀️ maybe because stayed 1 night.
Stopped here for work after a colleague recommended the place. Spacious rooms with comfy beds and showers that work. I normally struggle getting sleep in similar hotels but slept all way through. Breakfast was good, too. I ate in the restaurant in the evening but was disappointed the menu wasn't the same as the one in the room with fewer options being available. The food was nice though.
My friend and I visited for Sunday lunch and the food was good ... recommended ... and the serving staff were lovely. But ... our first drink at the bar was very disappointing. They were busy so we waited ... which is fine ... but when it was our turn someone who seemed to be a local was served before us and when my friend tried to speak to the bartender he 'shushed' her by his raised hand in her face ... sadly rude 😪 This has put me off rather as we meet regularly and hoped to use The George!
Went for a family meal on 23 Dec. I am vegetarian so chose risotto but told they had run out. Only other options were a burger or a salad with a tart. Didn't fancy either rest of the family were having curry so asked if chef could make me a curry answer was no. Opted for the burger and had to ask for the coleslaw that came with it but didn't really enjoy it. Had to ask a couple of times for water and my son in laws side.of chips arrived when he had nearly finished his main. Starter was nice. But disappointed. Hard enough sometimes being a veggie when you go out. Felt like I was being awkward. Just wanted a nice meal.
Lunched recently here, food good, waiters/waitresses helpful and cheerful but so dreadfully slow between courses, still the hotel added service charge without asking!
Stayed here a few of months back, was a really nice stay overall with comfortable rooms. My parents left some earphone and a charger here and contacted the hotel asking if they would send them with them sending the money for the postage (they live quite a way away). After chasing this up 4/5 times after being constantly assured by the manager they were being sent they are still yet to receive them when we stayed at the end of March. Although they did forgot the items you would expect a hotel to honour their word when dealing with something like this, begs the question are the items ever going to return or has someone decided they would rather keep them for themselves. Shame as the hotel was nice but for this reason we wouldn’t come back.
We have enjoyed visiting The George hotel restaurant for several years for lunch, dinner and special occasions. The food has greatly improved in tandem with the refurbishment a few years ago. Unfortunately the last few times we've visited we have been subjected to surly and rude behaviour from the male duty manager in the restaurant. We sincerely hope this is now not the norm as we have always enjoyed taking friends and family there - and indeed recommending the hotel as a place to stay.
Shocking service!! We called into the hotel bar for a quick bacon roll and coffee while we were out for a walk. The table we sat at was dirty, the coffee came straight away but was weak and tasteless. The waitress also spilt it as she served it but there was no apology nor effort to clean it up. After waiting for 30 minutes we enquired how much longer the bacon rolls would be. The waitress checked with the kitchen and reported back that it would be another 5 minutes - “the delay was because they had been serving a table of 9”. This is supposed to be a hotel! Surely they can cater for more than one table at a time! After another 10 minutes of waiting I went to the bar to cancel the order but was told the food was on its way. It eventually arrived 45 minutes after ordering (and our separate eggs another 5 minutes later) but without any apology for the delay, nor any cutlery or napkins which we had to go up to the bar to request. We were also not offered any sauce, salt, pepper etc to go with our bacon rolls, nor asked if we’d like another drink (considering we had finished our coffees 50 minutes earlier we thought we might have been asked). The food itself was delicious when it finally arrived (although slightly burnt), but overall we experienced very poor service at The George Hotel in Dorchester.
What should have been a memorable celebration at a historic local establishment turned into a deeply disappointing experience at The George Hotel in Dorchester-on-Thames. As longtime residents of the area for over 30 years, our family chose this venue for my father's 65th birthday dinner, only to encounter service that fell far below the standards expected of this renowned establishment. From the moment we arrived, the service was notably poor. After waiting several minutes, we were greeted by a staff member whose demeanor was unwelcoming. When my sister noticed a birthday promotion leaflet and inquired about it, the staff member dismissed us with an unnecessarily sarcastic comment about people "suddenly realizing it's their birthday," despite our genuine celebration. The situation deteriorated further when I received my starter, a crispy cauliflower dish, which contained a hair embedded in the batter. Upon returning the dish, the same staff member brought back what he claimed was "a fresh one," but it was clearly the same cold dish with the hair still visible. When I brought this to our waitress's attention (who was, notably, very professional and apologetic), the male staff member confronted me in front of other diners, raising his voice and questioning my integrity regarding the hair in the food. While our waitress was exemplary in her service and apologetic for the situation, this unfortunate interaction with the male staff member (who we later learned is named Hanni) completely ruined what should have been a joyous family celebration. The aggressive and unprofessional manner in which he handled a simple customer service issue was unacceptable for an establishment of this caliber. While The George Hotel holds a special place in our local community's landscape, this experience has unfortunately tarnished its reputation in our eyes. Until management addresses these fundamental service and training issues, particularly in handling customer concerns with professionalism and respect, I cannot recommend this establishment for special occasions or regular dining.
Do not use Room 101. It is a lovely room with a 4-poster bed, but…..The mattress “sits” in a base wooden frame which makes it very difficult and painful to get in and out of bed. To be told on the day of departure that they have waited 3 weeks for “maintenance” to fix the problem was very disappointing. Why would they knowingly sell the room? The breakfast was freshly prepared and the staff were smiling and very helpful.
Booked a table for 3 people on Sunday 6/4/25 The Sunday roast was awful. I ordered the roast pork and he was 2 pork loin steak pan fried and finished with some gravy.. Carrots parsnips was cooked few days ago.roast potatoes wasn’t great either… not to mention a bad service by a young waitress.. £164 for 3 of us get a live!!!!! Won’t be coming back…
