Opinions de On A Roll Staten Island
My first time there and I meant to order their roast beef but couldn't resist their Lent Combo Special. It was a great value and delicious. I got the flounder sandwich, circle fries, and a Starry fountain drink. I'll try the roast beef next time. We got to talk to the owner who is a down to earth and friendly guy. I love supporting a small business that values quality and customer satisfaction.
If you’re serious about roast beef, On a Roll is the place. The roast beef is perfectly cooked, tender, and stacked high on a fresh roll that makes every bite incredible. Hands down, the BEST roast beef sandwiches around. Joe, the owner, takes real pride in what he does, and it shows. Great food, great service, and a local spot that truly delivers!
I brought my 88 year old Mother there for their famous homemade roast beef sandwich, she absolutely loved it! The fries were amazing and so we're the chicken fingers. And to top it off the owner is the one who helped us with such kindness and professionalism. I highly recommend this place!!
The owners and staff are truly amazing. The food is hot and fresh. I would definitely make sure this is a go to spot.
Stopped in the other night to see what the rave was about. Definitely a must have, the roast beef is amazing and the gravy is great. I must tell you I grabbed it before I was going home and ate it cold and was still amazing. Next time I will eat it there hot and try some of the must other haves. So if you know, if its good cold Definitely how great its going to be hot.
Had it today for the first time. Been driving to Roll n Roaster since forever. Loved the food good fast service. Will be be back and do not have to drive to bklyn.
Food and service are always great here- they’re always friendly which is important to me. We always get the hot roast beef or bruzzer and it never disappoints. Also love their onion rings!!!
I grew up in Brooklyn and still work there . I have had Roll&Roaster to many times to count. I went to On A Roll tonight for the first time . I am blown away , I didn’t think it would compete with R&R but not only did it I found every item I purchased better . The roast beef I got dry on purpose with gravy and extra cheese. iOS in the side . Their roast beef dry with no added gravy stood on its own , it was extremely moist and when I ate it it actually tasted like roast beef . What I mean the taste of the beef wasn’t masked by globs of cheese and onions , I actually tasted the beef perfectly , I believe their roll is better then the competitors which allowed the flavor of the beef to be tasted perfectly , their corn fritter again was better , they were a little larger and their was no uncooked batter like I usually taste at R&R . The shrimp box was perfectly cooked , large shrimp that were extremely tasty , the cocktail sauce however wasn’t my favorite it was good but more vinegar based than horseradish which I prefer . The fries were larger circles than the other place and were cooked more crispy and more enjoyable , their cheese sauce to dip them was perfect what you would expect . All in all I find on the roll to be the winner between THEM AND ROLL N ROASTER. I can care less about the cheesy nostalgia debate . I also found it more affordable. Roll n roasted is good but OTR is better , RNR does have amazing orangeade good apple pie and clam strips . I also have eaten at John’s deli to many times , Brennan and Carr and they are both amazing but are too different to compare to OTR , they are totally different eating experiences . John’s deli has gone down hill a lot also since new owners , their roast been is so small and measly for $20 now , they even charge $4 for a medium gravy now as well other then the roast beef it’s average at best food . Brennan and Carr is amazing and totally different , everything there is top notch , it has been there over 100 years so they are doing everything perfect . But you have to be in the mood for it as it’s way different . OTR is my new all around favorite beef stop , it has a limited menu but it’s perfect , everything you get is way above average , dare I say the best
I will never go to Rollin Roaster again after eating here . Everything from the roast beef to the roll , quantity is much better . Now my standards are through the roof after eating at ON A Roll!!
I have been going to this place since it opened in Staten Island, and I'm going to continue going here when I'm in the neighborhood. I see many people who've I have gone to the original with say either On a Roll is bad, or alternatively; the food isn't that good. In comparison to nearly every local fast food restaurant; I consider On a Roll to have the best staff, service, and food by a mile. Yes, the cheese kinda carries a lot of the food but that's one of the appeals of On a Roll. I'd rate the chicken fingers a 5/5 and I'd have them over any local place like applebees any day of the week. I'm more of a cheeseburger type person, and that's what I usually order. It's a big burger, but the condiments carry and I'd rate this burger a 4/5. I would personally prefer if they switched up their burger style to maybe a smash burger with cheez wiz since we've never seen that and a different type of beef, but I'm eating that regardless. It's tasty, and it's better than anything you're getting from Wendys, Mcdonalds, or any local diner if I'm being honest. I also kinda wish they had kosher dill pickles, but if you're looking for a crunch on your burger there are other alternatives that On a Roll does offer. The fries.. those are an absolute classic. They're one of my top three favorite fries on the island, and the nostalgia hits me hard. It's a must have with the cheese. The ironic part is that I have had legitimately everything from this place except the thing it's most famous for - the roast beef. I may try that sometime the next time I go, and I always recommend new people to the Island to On a Roll. Also, they're one of the only places left with a ketchup dispenser, and the staff are some of the most friendly people you'll ever encounter. Highly recommend, and I hope they stay in business for a long time. Affordable, tasty, and clean.
First time I went here with a few JCC people. The place felt like something from the 90s and it had a yellow and red design to it. The fries 🍟 that they had looked like pickle chips. I ordered a cheeseburger with cheese fries and soda 🥤. They have registers covered in bags because they weren't ready for the public yet. So you can tell that this place was open for a while. The only way you can purchase your order from here if you have the doordash app or Uber eats. Then I went to Panera bread to eat it there and and my God it was delicious. You Can locate this place somewhere in hylan boulevard and new dorp lane. I heard that this place will be open to the public on February. 👍❣️😉 Hopefully.
I will redo this review when i go back cause i will be back. This place is great for the amount of food you get for the price you pay is unmatched. The roll was butter soft roast beef amazing, the photos do not do this place justice will redo when i eat there again. And if they have cookies when you get there order one it will be one of the best you’ll ever have.
Before I talk about the food, I want to say, all the employees were super nice and the atmosphere was great. If that was the only thing I was based in this review on it would be a five-star review. I tried the roast beef medium rare with onions and cheese and the pork sandwich with onions. I also had a side I believe of their disc fries. Roast beef was definitely of high quality. Although the gravy and the sandwich itself did not have enough salt, there just wasn't enough flavor. I would say the same thing for the pork sandwich too. Fries were not crispy, unless they're not supposed to be, they also lacked salt. Cheese seemed overly salty which was the only thing that kind of added flavor to anything. Although, I enjoyed my meal but I'm not sure how somebody else would feel. Also tried their chocolate chip cookie. That was delicious. Overall, I would definitely try the food again. Maybe this batch was not seasoned as well as it normally is.
On a Roll Layout/atmosphere *Bright shades of yellow, Orange and brown; Edison bulbs; eight tables; four seat window counter; tables on sidewalk; parking lot Service *Friendly; place your order and wait for your order number to be called Food/drink *Roast Beef Sandwich with Gravy - solid; seeded bun; heavy on the gravy *French fries - solid; cottage style fries
Food was good and well priced. Obviously this is a Roll N Roaster spin off, so in comparison it’s pretty good. However, the gravy and roast beef sandwich needs more gravy. We could barely taste the gravy so it made the sandwich very dry. The fries and cheese were delicious. The order of fries is pretty big and I’d recommend sharing between two people. If they added more gravy to the sandwich, specifically pouring it on the top of the bun it would add some extra needed flavor and juiciness to the sandwich. If you’re looking for some local RnR and don’t feel like driving over the bridge, this will suffice!
They don't take debit cards. They force you to use it as credit so they can charge you more. The guy behind the counter actually told me to report him. Like I said you don't allow people to use their debit cards with their pin to avoid you extra charges. You force people to use their debit cards as credit transacting... very simple it might be legal but it's not honest just so you can make a few extra cents.
SOOOO I hate doing this part but must be honest..Not good. The service and staff were Great just inviting and quick there was some people in there mostly older and I get it after my experience why!!!! Nooo seasoning just bland the roll was falling apart..Bread was very good baked right there but everything else just not good..Meat was a lil dry and not many onions they only have wiz for cheese wish had some cheddar to cover up the blandness!!!! Cost was great 750 for a roll..Just Not a fan
I grew up in sheepshead Bay with the likes of Brennan and Carr Rolls and roadster. You either like onions or you don't and if you do you expect to have a decent amount when I order it online they gave me just a sliver amount , that was almost nothing. I ordered rare like I normally do with this nostalgic type of food. The meat was more cooked than well done Not a pink color on that meat. It upset me because I don't eat it quite often I live in Staten Island now I was hoping to relive my childhood memories from time to time and this was a disappointment, people say you shouldn't compare every restaurant does things differently but when you ask for rare in any establishment you get rare Not well done.
The roast beef was beyond dead it was grey dead asked for roast beef med rare cheese onions double dipped it was absolutely terrible, fries were fresh and hot!!! And paired ooo so well with cold cheese sauce smh guy behind the counter could care less and i was the only one in there this is not how roll n roaster was run when i was a kid as the owner proclaims i was sooo disappointed since i like the guys videos online talked a big game but cant back it up Response to owner, i am definitely not a R & R worker i really wanted to like your food and was rooting for you since i feel R & R fell off and is not the same, but your response is terrible maybe you should look at operations a little more and making sure standards are up to what you preach. Your GOOGLE Rreviews you only got 300+ at 4.5 stars if it was up to the standards you post why dont you have thousands of reviews honestly the grade of beef i got was a step above arbys which is the worst ive ever had in my life look at you cameras just before 12 i was the only person in there i didnt even finish my sandwich
Atmosphere was solid, customer service was good no issues there. But the burger? Yeah nah, that wasn’t it. No pickles, and you’re charging extra for lettuce, tomato, onions that’s basic human rights for a burger. Just low-tier. That’s why it’s a one star.
I can attest to the rudeness of the employee who didnt bother to get off the line with Greg during our interaction. He was dismissive and not helpful at all. If it helps he has one blue eye and one brown eye. When I asked recommendations he was flippant. The tables appeared to be wiped down. The bathroom has a do not cross police like sticker tape on it to prevent non customers using it but it is very offputting for customers who legit paid for service. The guy behind the counter sneezed into his shirt twice and didnt sanitize or wash his hands which was interesting since he was so close to the food delivery station. I most likely would not return here if I didnt have multiple errands to run in this strip mall. The filet was disproportionate from the bun so more fish than bun. In addition I had to ask for a lemon wedge but they only did slices. Naturally would expect lemon with a fish sandwich. Underwhelming sauce on the fish sandwich. The tartar sauce is kens which feels like low hanging fruit, fresh tartar would be ideal. The fries were dangerously hot and the "cheese sauce" was the equivalent of velveeta. I found it odd it wasn't placed on top of the fries but I get speed trumps quality at this place. To be fair I got my meal under 5 minutes. The cod filet at alamo movie theatre was way better than this. This tasted like a Costco tilapia fried up too fast and fries with an inconsistent mandolin chopping job. Overall no one makes you feel welcomed or valued as a customer. Im expecting a wicked response from whoever manages this business account as I saw the lack of emotional intelligence or business acumen from other responses that gave candid feedback. Won't return anyway but happy to chat on how to improve restaurant management of this particular location. I can't speak to how the whole franchise is run. No one acknowledged me cleaning up my own table even when the grey haired guy with black glasses was out front sipping from a cup. Overall the experience is sloppy and I dont need to see more. Place had sparse patronage on a friday afternoon however that doesn't dictate the health of a business.
