Stopped in to enjoy some tasty Austrian brews and fresh snacks on the beautiful and legendary grounds. We weren’t very hungry and couldn’t stay long, so we ordered a crisp lager, a shaved radish salad, and von Trapp pretzels with house mustards and beer cheese. The beer was cold and refreshing, the pretzels soft and salty, and the beer cheese absolutely knocked it out of the park. But the real star of the show was the shredded radish salad. Much to our surprise, this dish was a visual and culinary delight, a creative display of daikon, watermelon, and red radishes, lightly dressed with lemon oil and salt flakes. It was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and my daughters and I loved it! The ambiance of the bierhall is fantastic featuring large windows, tasteful taxidermy, and timber architecture all set against a scenic backdrop. If you’re in the area, definitely stop in and check it out!

Let’s talk experiences.. a brewery tour can be boring if you aren’t into beer. But the Von Trapp Brewery has so much family history behind them (can I get a “the hills are alive” 🎶) that this was an enjoyable tour. Set in the hills of Stowe, with beautiful views, you are immersed into a proud, strong, family run legacy. You start off in the event space that overlooks the entire brewery for some really stellar Birds Eye views of the space. Then they walk you through all the different areas explaining the process for famous Austrian beers. Standing next to the huge vats was super cool, as well as seeing the canning process. After the tour of the facility, we got to sample about 4 different beers. As someone who does not like beer, I was impressed that I liked one of the golden lagers, Helles! There is a restaurant attached, so we ate dinner there, to top off our Vermont Austria experience with some Bavarian food! If you are in the area, this is a must try! IG Lentz_Explore

10/9/25 My husband, and I were traveling through Vermont on our way to Maine and made a stop at this brewery. I’ve known nothing about this gem until I went inside and realized this is the family behind the movie? “Sound of music.” I kind of was in shock, but in a good way, I kept reading more of the book they had on display in the gift shop, very interesting book indeed. We didn’t stay for food, as we just came to try out the beers on tap. They don’t offer flights so we ordered a variety to be able to try some. The brewery is quite large and lively. They do allow pets outside with their picnic tables. Although the ground is mainly gravel, so not perfect for pets paws, but their tables make for a good environment. It took a while to get our beers, but they were tasty and worth the wait. It was such a unique experience and we hope to return again in the future, next time to enjoy their food.

As advertised! We loved our meal and even got dessert despite how full we were. The beer was very good, service was attentive. We have been both on week days and during race weekends. I recommend a reservation if you're heart is set on trying this place. Looks like a bierhall, feels like a bierhall and tastes like a bierhall.

Great food, drink, and wonderful + friendly staff! We lovely having a cozy meal here after skiing around the property. The menu also has a guide to help you pick the best beer to match your meal.

My boyfriend and I came down from Smugglers’ Notch Resort to check out the disc golf course at the Trapp Family Lodge — I grew up watching The Sound of Music and absolutely insisted we stop here! I joked that it felt like we were disc golfing in Austria, since that’s why the family moved to this area (at least according to the movie!). We arrived without reservations, but the man up front was so kind and helpful — he managed to get us two seats at the bar, even though they weren’t originally right next to each other. The only little disappointment was that they don’t offer beer flights, though I’m sure there’s a reason for it! That said, they do have nice sampler sizes, so we each got two and shared. We ordered the pretzel and the Austrian potato salad (which is now my new favorite potato salad ever!). The pretzel was amazing, and all the dipping sauces at the bar were incredible — highly recommend trying them all. Our server, Justin, was super friendly and even humored me when I asked about the von Trapp family descendants and whether they ever come in! Forest was also incredibly sweet and helpful. Such great staff all around. I absolutely loved this place — it felt like a little childhood dream come true being there!

7/16/25—After our 15-minute stop at the Von Trapp Lodge, everyone was hungry, so we headed to a nearby brewery. We timed it perfectly—just 15 minutes after we arrived, buses started pulling in, and people began flooding the place. We sat outside, and while it was a bit hot, they made sure to keep us well-hydrated, and even brought water for Rambo, my dog. Our waiter, Seth, was quick to greet us and take our order. I have to say, everything we had was excellent. I ordered the hamburger, and it was delicious, the fries were superb, and the mini salads were so fresh and healthy. The inside of the place was lovely too—it felt like we were having lunch in Austria for a brief moment. A great experience all around

Great place to relax a little, grab some good food, and enjoy a beer or two, but get here early because it gets crowded fast. Cheese board is tasty, with crackers, jam, olives, and meats. Cheese soup was decent and the spatzle is amazing.

World-class old world lager for those of us who remember malt is the real star of a good beer. Love vT for always getting it right. Cool fun vibe and a great place to go in the snow. I'd recommend trying a selection, as anything from the kolsch to the dunkel will be delicious. Great food, too, though a pretzel with spicy mustard is often enough

Picture postcard in the winter snow. Cold outside but warm and friendly inside. Our server Brianna was nice and knowledgeable! The beer and food were worth the visit!

The food, service, and beer were delicious! I had the grill salmon and it was mouth watering good! I highly recommend. We also did the beer tasting, however I do not like beer, but even I found some that I liked! The staff was excellent and friendly. I highly recommend!

My wife and I went for lunch and she had the salmon with red cabbage and potatoes German style, and I had the sausage sampler plate which was delicious. It came with a spicy mustard and a sweet mustard mashed potatoes, pickle salad, and diced tomatoes, very authentic German Austrian style food. I had a Dunkle beer and a Oktoberfest beer. Both were great accompaniments to our food. We definitely come back again.

Reminded me of being in a German bier hall. Great authentic German / Austrian food. In house brewery with large selection of beer. Great atmosphere with great views of surrounding mountains.

Delicious schnitzel, light golden brown with wonderful sides. We tried multiple beers and liked them all. Our server, Billy, was friendly and professional ~ even recommended two hiking trails in the area. A nice dining experience that is worth going out of your way for.

Fantastic place! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the beers, which were all top-notch. Great food, great service, and an even better mountain view. Can’t wait to come back! 🌄🍺

Very nice set up here and really enjoyed my first visit. As the designated driver, I did not partake of the spirits, but my partners in crime assured me it was quite good. One chose a flight of four samples and the other chose the IPA. There is a great deal of history associated with the property.

We came on a rainy day for lunch and it wasn’t crowded at all. Service was fast and pleasant. Food was pretty good - we tried the pretzels and the brats - and the beer was really quite delicious. They have a beautiful sun room to sit in on the rainy days and still feel like you’re outside and you can look in to see some of the brewery if you go upstairs. We’d definitely be back if we were in the area again.

Great views and sunset ET mountains and a little lake view with kids chasing tubs with butterfly nets. Big place with lots of indoor and outdoor trackers and merch. Pictures of family singers and a band venue.

von Trapp Brewing is an awesome place for beer lovers to visit! The bierhall is very nice & the bartenders are friendly. The grounds are absolutely beautiful - you can walk the trails, play cornhole, or disc golf. The tour is interesting too, so worth checking out!

DELICIOUS meal with beautiful scenery! We enjoyed the Grilled Bratwurst with Sauerkraut and Vinaigrette Tomatoes. (Note: the sauerkraut is traditional and very sour.) For entrees we had the Roasted Vegetable Platter and the Grilled Salmon. They were FANTASTIC. We dined outside because the weather was lovely and we wanted a quieter experience.

Brewery bingo card time. Who's got 'Brewery attached to lodge started by family who inspired iconic musical' on their cards? Go ahead and cross that sucker off the list. The lodge has been here forever, 75 years or something. The brewery, 15 years. This beautiful building which houses their brewery and bierhaus? Less than ten. Interior is real nice, too. Gift shop, barstool seating at their large u-shaped bar, and both inside and outdoor patio seating, too. The layout is a little confusing. Open seating at the bar, and the full beer and food menu is available there. Most folks at the bar seemed to be waiting for their table reservations. So, if coming as a group, something to think about. Meanwhile, like any good Austrian-themed brewery should, they offered pretzels and beer cheese. There are bottles of spicy mustard nearby, too. Pretzels were medium-sized and thoroughly baked. Beer cheese was tasty and *just* warm enough. Could've used about 33% more cheese. That's the pretzel report! The bartender said that Vermont's serving limit is 32 oz., so you can DIY build a flight of up to five of their six-ounce sampler pours. Or, get two and then two more. Who cares. Do you. There are also full half-liter (16.9 oz) and small third-liter (11.2 oz) pulls available of all their stuff. Mostly, the choice of cold ones is all Bavarian styled. Traditional stuff. Expect one of the better pilsners out there, and an almost equally as good dunkel. Vienna and Helles lagers also hit the nail on the head.

In addition to the von Trapp Lodge, down the hill a bit make sure to pay a visit here. It’s very spacious, yet cozy. The menu is as expected, with German/Austrian fare, but very good. I recommend the beer cheese soup on a cold winter’s night. Sample some beers, it’s worth it. Service was solid and helpful. With all the windows the views are great and the hills are alive!

Prost! 5 stars for the von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall! I had such a lovely time at lunch here! We were thankful to be seated by the large windows overlooking the beautiful outdoor setting. It's easy to picture yourself in Austria for a moment while enjoying their delicious German food! The von Trapp grandchildren were even seated at the table next to us! I really enjoyed the cheddar ale soup and pretzels for an appetizer. I shared a burger with my friend, which was more than enough food, especially combined with the German potato salad as our side. I'm not a huge beer fan, but I did notice they offer many award winning options. I opted for the hard cider instead, which was very refreshing! Reservations are highly recommended. They also offered a complimentary shuttle to take us to and from the von Trapp Lodge, which was much appreciated!

Brewery with an amazing view and outdoor seating. Beer and German themed foods are really good. Charcuterie and a Kolsch are my go to!

We were referred by a local and were expecting a bit of a tourist trap. Instead we ended up having a delicious dinner. The beer hall and restaurant are a bit cavernous with an over abundance of game trophy heads on the wall. But the beer and the food was fantastic. We all ordered a side salad which was loaded with tomatoes, beets, cucumbers and lettuce. It was a bit heavy on dressing but the veggies were very flavorful. I had the salmon which had an amazing maple dressing- it wasn’t too sweet or overpowering and complimented the well-portioned and perfectly cooked meat. It came with a large portion of vegetables and farro - the veggies were a bit crunchy and not overcooked, really perfect with the salmon. The Chicken Schnitzel was great- very tender, excellent flavors and a good size portion. The Burger was large and juicy, very flavorful. We finished up with the Apple Strudel because when in (faux) Austria… it was huge, warm and not too sweet. We split it three ways and still couldn’t finish it. Definitely recommended- and get a reservation!

Surprisingly good food for a mostly tourist spot. They are even gluten free friendly. Nice staff and good beer.

Love to visit the Bierhall, especially if the weather is good for sitting outside. Delicious food choices and unique sides. I've enjoyed the pretzels, bratwurst and chicken sandwich (schnitzel style!). Several of the lagers have similar tastes, but they always have some other beer options. The staff is always friendly and attentive!

I would like to start by saying that I am no expert in Austrian food. The breadth of my experience, likely non- transferable to Austrian fare, comes only from eating at German Restaurants in numerous cities in the United States. That being said, I believe I can relate to others what tastes good to me. My friend and I went to the von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall for a late Sunday lunch. I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel and a side of potato salad. My friend ordered the Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Bauernwurst. Both of our dishes sat on sauerkraut and braised red cabbage. My friend's wursts also came with mashed potatoes and my Schnitzel was topped with arugula, with lingonberry viniagrette and with a Von Trapp Farm fried egg. I've had Schnitzel many times in my life. This was the best Schnitzel I've ever had - the breading was not over-fried, but was light and crispy. The chicken was perfectly cooked. The sauerkraut and braised red cabbage provided great textural and acidic contrast. My friend absolutely loved his wurst dish! The (red) potato salad, purely vinegar‐based, was a delight. The balance of acid to potato was spot on. Our server Emily was excellent. She was responsive and never intrusive. I can't say enough about how hard we saw Emily working and the job that she appeared to do! I wish I could visit Vermont more frequently so that I could return to the von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall again and again. I strongly recommend that everybody visit and have a great meal!

Ate here twice during a stay at the lodge. First time one of the dishes was undercooked but they readily replaced it and took a little off the tab. Second visit food was perfect. (Dishes we tried were the chicken schnitzel, glazed salmon, veggie spaetzle, sausage sampler plate. Also the fresh soft pretzels.) Beers are excellent too. All the servers were kind and attentive.

Very conveniently located on. The resort grounds. Just enough separated for a change of scenery. Dinner then lunch on 2 separate occasions. First time: service and food was good. Second time: service was great and burger was good. Salad selected was visually appealing but flavor was not to my taste. Expected an Asian dressing but it was close to a dill flavor. To each his own but could not give Bierhall the max amount of stars.

It’s a nice restaurant. The food was unique, but too saucy for me. The ribeye steak had too much fat to my taste. The French fries were just okay. The fried chicken was amazing though. For the prices, I don’t think I would give five stars. But the atmosphere was good, and it’s an experience.

Beautiful outdoor sitting area! The beer was very high quality - you could taste the difference. The food was absolutely delicious and fresh. Options for everyone and dog friendly outside. The service can definitely improve. Though everyone was friendly, the service was incredibly slow. We were outside 30 minutes before anyone came to us (and we were seated outside by the host) and waited another 30 to get the check. If it weren’t for this, they definitely deserve five stars! Highly recommend visiting and make sure to make a reservation.

Beautiful location. Beer was good. It was such a treat to see the von Trapp Brewing & Bierhall. It's a mustvto drive to see the von Trapp Lodge as well. Very nostalgic for me.

We came here for lunch and were really stunned by the animal decor. I came to understand all the animals were hunted by a family member, which I'm not a fan of, but to each his own. The food was very filling and yummy. We got the beer cheddar soup, some sides, and the brats. Sitting outside was lovely as the view is really splendid. We also got a flight of beers. The flight servings were large, which was nice, but the beers were just okay. Very traditional Eastern European style beers with nothing really special about them.

Came here over the summer and loved it. Great views and solid food. The service was also responsive to any mess ups we brought up. Ex: two of our burgers came out with cold fries and they brought out fresh batches to make up for it. I had the schnitzel and I would highly recommend it if you love fried and delicious.

G

Solid food options with recommended beer pairings provided. Atmosphere and scenery is fun, great for families. Enjoyed the brat on the pretzel bun and a generously poured dunkel. Skip the spicy mustard.

Great timber hall brew house with an abundant Sampling of the in-house ales. On top of great beer they have diverse menu with good food. We tried their version of Cobb salad which was full of grilled chicken and cheese as well as brautworst and pretzel appetizer. The bartender was a little drab and could use a little sparkle from Maria Von Trapp.

S
Scott Baker

My wife and I and another couple stopped here for a beer, the place is really nice and it has nice views, but there was only one guy pouring beer for a giant bar and it must’ve taken 20 minutes to get a beer and another 20 minutes, waiting for a simple pretzel. It’s a nice place but the service was really poor on that day. To be fair, there was a pretty good size bus parked outside, but it didn’t look that busy inside just somehow disorganized. It’s a pass for me.

N
Night Frost

Went to this brewery after a Stowe Pinnacle hike. The beer was really good, great vibe, and the place was busy. The only downside was the lady working at the register — she seemed frustrated, like she didn’t want to be there. Maybe she was having a bad day, but it made us feel a bit unwelcome and rushed out.

N
Nick Deubert

We used to love coming to this place. It was a great place to come for authentic Austrian cuisine and great beer, but now it's turning into a yuppie ski bar and the price gouging is pricing out the people who appreciate the culture and actually know what the beer styles are. $37 for a breaded chicken cutlet (schnitzel) and $10 beers are ridiculous. The hostess doesn't know what she's doing, she told us there was no where to put our party of 3 (meanwhile there was a ton of empty tables and tables that stayed empty the entire time we were there). We told her we drove 40 mins to get there and then she reluctantly told us it'd be a 45 min wait. 5 mins go by and we ask about the empty seating at the bar, which she never even mentioned as an option, and of course we sat there and were eating within 10 mins.

C
Craig Brooks-Rooney

Wanted to love this but were left a bit disappointed, particularly by the food. Beer pretzel was fine, but the cheese sauce ($5 extra!) was just very salty. Trio of sausages were a bit chewy, mash potatoes were dry, very little sauerkraut, pickles were watery. Mushrooms stroganoff tasted like it was from a packet, watery with thickeners added. Apple strudel was actually really good, but wish it was served with ice cream instead of whipped cream (from a can?).

S
Sarah Klein

We wanted to love this place more than anything, but unfortunately the experience was lacking. Service was slow. We waited a long time for everything. Food, drinks, heck my husband was able to walk to the car and back before the server took our drink orders. But the real disappointment was the food. The pulled pork sandwich was extremely dry. Considering the price for said sandwich, I was surprised and disappointed by the quality. I guess this is the kind of place you go just to say you went, but sadly we won’t be back.

J
John Black

This place seems to have an identity crisis for what it is, and wants to be. Our food was largely mediocre and the service was truly terrible. The house beer was however, great. Our waitress was very short and it seemed like we were greatly inconveniencing her by being there. More importantly though, it was incredibly uncomfortable listening to her be rude and condescending to, what appeared to be a new employee. That is so beyond unacceptable and unprofessional. Before coming, we anticipated a higher end brewery with house made food, and prices to match. To our disappointment, the food seemed to be closer to a warmed up Cisco meal with a nice plaiting and prices for food in another class. The aesthetic was very modern and pop music played over the murmurs of other patrons. This choice means it fits in firmly in the category with most other breweries, but severely lacks any sort of character or history to go with its heritage. Overall, I’d recommend you go to a different tourist trap, as this one was overwhelmingly disappointing. EDIT: they requested I reached out via email, so I did. They never responded to my email.

P
Philip Behn

Sadly, we’ll give von Trapp a pass until they change management, chef or both. Dinner for three was a far cry from the Bavarian-style experience they promise (and used to provide). Pretzels were clearly old and warmed up, hard and dry. My mushroom Stroganoff was an inedible gunk with overcooked egg noodles and what seemed to be cobbled together leftovers. The two Bratwurst sandwiches came with over-buttered and fried (yikes!) Spätzele and red cabbage that has nothing to do with real Rotkohl We used to love this place for the quality and taste of its food. Not anymore.

M
Mark Aldrich

Beautiful building, great views, and solid Helles beer—that’s the only good part. The rest is a mess. If you want food, you wait in one line. If you want just drinks, you’re stuck at the same bottleneck where people take forever reading menus. No full bar—just beer, one red, one white, one rosé, and one hard cider. For a place built on Austrian/German heritage, this is definitely not German efficiency.

J
J L

The Hills are alive with the sound of incompetence and mismanagement! Don’t go here if you want the memory of the beautiful movie Sound of Music to be destroyed in your minds forever…. it’s a total cash grab! COMPLETE MELTDOWN!!! Management needs to get it together. Yes, it was a busy foliage weekend lunch, but that’s no excuse for chaos. Two people behind the bar—one older man and a trainee—while lines stretched out the door. After politely asking for the filthy bar top to be wiped down, a beer was spilled all over me, staining my clothes and crashing to the floor. Not even an apology. And where was management? Nowhere to be found while their overwhelmed staff floundered. A simple “sorry” and a shred of professionalism would’ve gone a long way. Instead, the bartender who spilled the drink decided to make snide comments about me to other guests. Classy. This was not the warm Austrian hospitality this brewery is supposedly known for. I also watched multiple couples sit down, wait ten minutes without so much as eye contact, and leave. Great atmosphere, terrible leadership. ** Photo is of line out the door to order a simple beer from the bar. Again, one bartender and one in training. Where are the managers?

This was an absolutely awful experience and easily one of the worst restaurant meals I’ve had in years. We made a Christmas Day reservation expecting the normal menu, only to be told upon arrival that it was a $57 per person buffet—something that was not disclosed on Resy. That alone was frustrating, but the food was the real disaster. The buffet options were chicken schnitzel, Austrian sausage, mushroom stroganoff, and ham. Every single item was bland, overcooked, and served cold. The schnitzel had no flavor, one of the sausages was so overcooked it was barely edible, the mushroom dish was completely tasteless, and the ham was dry and overdone. These are basic dishes, yet it seemed like the kitchen forgot seasoning existed. Pretzel bites were supposedly part of the buffet, but they were gone both times I went up. Service was also poor—we had to wait an extra 25 minutes just to get our check so we could leave. This experience was bad enough that we canceled reservations at another Von Trapp restaurant later in our trip. Maybe their regular menu is better, but based on this visit, I would not recommend Von Trapp Bierhall to anyone.

K

I never shared a bad review, but I do hope the owner reads this. It’s very disappointing to be treated so rude by a young girl working reception (and is front-facing in a business, no-less). As someone in hospitality, I would have expected some kindness in her delivery that there are no tables available. Another couple with kids had the same reaction, and left. Training staff to be “hospitable” is standard practice even when it’s busy.
