Good comfort food. Reminds me of home cooked meals.
Grace was such an amazing server. Great vibes, great attitude and energy. She accommodated our large group PERFECTLY. Highly recommend!
The restaurant side has never let me down, the same goes for the bakery side as well. Very rare that I find it slow, but always seems to be room for everyone Could add to the menu, but that's probably why it's always great Please try it you won't be sorry, if you like good island food
Very clean. Amazing food. Try the paradise cake.
great food fast service and friendly employees
This is where you can get a Dole whip without going to Disneyland or the Dole plantation in Honolulu! Why is this dessert so popular? It is a perfect blend of refreshing pineapple soft serve sherbet that is a little creamy and not too sweet. If you see a long line at the Tiki bird house at Disneyland it’s for this, and the show which is all animatronic birds singing is honestly boring but we go there to take a break, in the hot summer this Dole whip is so good. But here at the Local Place you don’t have to wait in a long line and the food is very good, it is a quick cafe version of the larger King’s Hawaiian Restaurant on Sepulveda. The light airy chiffon cakes here have been my favorite for decades. The Dobash is a light chocolate chiffon cake with chocolate pudding and a chocolate frosting that is so light you can almost eat a whole cake by yourself. It’s so amazing if you are in Torrance or Gardena you must try the cakes. I have a secret, they won’t make cakes with real fruit so I get a cake and then decorate it with fruit in season. They have a Peach Bavarian cake that’s like a strawberry shortcake but has canned peach slices inside with whip cream frosting, if you get that and add your own fresh white peach in the summer on top or fresh strawberries in the spring, just a warning you will be a cake snob and won’t be able to eat any other cake. So if you don’t live near by where you can buy from them again you will start shaking and crying for this cake so just be prepared to be a King’s Hawaiian cake addict. The muffins are also pretty good, they have a few mochi donut flavors and it is ok but I only get the cakes and if I’m driving by I just get a slice of Dobash for later. The Paradise cake is also very popular it’s a tropical flavor cake but I like Dobash better! You don’t have to get a whole cake. They sell just the chiffon Bundt so you can make your own too. Smother it in fresh whip cream with fresh fruit. Enjoy! This local place will not take reservations for birthday cakes you have to go to the larger Torrance location!
We went inside to order but got take out. The restaurant is clean and bright. Service is excellent. The food is delicious. My husband had the French toast platter with eggs and Portuguese sausage, I had steamed rice with eggs and Portuguese sausage. We definitely recommend the Portuguese sausage, but everything was well-cooked and tasted great.
Food is awesome ! Loved the service, very patient and happy to help. It was my daughters bday so I took her for a mocho donut which she loved ! The fishes in the tank she just loved 🥰. We took a cake too which was phenomenal for me and my husband who doesn’t like chocolate cake. He actually enjoyed it.
Always our go-to place for breakfast and saimin. Basically anything you order here is excellent. The breakfast burrito with sausage is delicious and filling even though it looks small. It's also a tad bit greasy though. The downside is that yes the Portuguese sausage is fairly expensive for what it is, but I keep on coming back!
Good food reasonable prices. My go to lunch spot
I came here for the first time and it was great! I met up my husband for lunch here and we got the teriyaki and katsu plate and the dole whip float, it was all very delicious. Now the best part for me was the pastries. I got a 3 I believe and the top one was the key lime pie, overall, I will be coming back to try other items but it's a cute place. They have a fish tank and have all the fishes from finding Nemo so iykyk. It's cute I recommend giving it a try.
Always my go-to for a great breakfast burrito with Portuguese sausage, spam & egg musubi, and a new fave - the ube mochi donut. Friendly staff and good vibes. Love the Local Place!
Almost 5 Stars all the way. Food was Every bit of King Hawaiian as it should be. Everything on the menu from the entre to the desserts are awesome. (Would have liked to see some Poi, but hey not a thing for everyone). Service was great. Fast and accurate. Atmosphere, packed, small tables, not the greatest seating/floor plan. The aquarium looked like it needed a bit of service, dingy water, or dirty glass couldn't tell. And the tables needed to be wiped down. But overall, my favorite place to grab a quick bite after a flight into LAX!
Omg go here immediately! Food portion and price are amazing. The food is amazing. I got the plate with teriyaki chicken and beef, Mac salad and ramen salad. Holy cow, great price and I had a ton leftover. The bakery is amazing too. The staff is amazing too! Don't miss this place! I will be back over and over....
I had never been to -(Kings Hawaiian) before, but my Brother insisted that we go there to get a -“rainbow cake!” and I’m glad we did!🍰🌈🌺 The cake was super pretty, and upon purchase the guy who checked me out excitedly offered to write -“Happy Birthday” or whatever writing I requested. 😃🤗 If you're looking for a delicious cake, happy snack, or delightful treat to brighten your day, I recommend Kings Hawaiian 🌺💕😋 #KingsHawaiian #CakeLoversParadise #SweetTreats
I cannot wait to go eat inside the restaurant! I ordered a cake for my vo-worker's birthday and it was soooo good. It was the Paradise cake!! It was good!! I did the curbside pick-up and it was so easy and efficient. They are practicing COVID safety. I'm definitely coming back here to try out the food.
I got a slice of paradise cake to go, and it was everything social media said it would be. Not too sweet, tender and moist cake, definitely photogenic. Two things: 1. The passion fruit cake layer is awfully strong and dominates the other two cake layers (lime and guava), so the main thing you taste if you eat all three in one bite is passion fruit. 2. The to go box is too short for the cake, and it squished the top, flattening it and ruining the lovely piping work of the bakers.
I can't believe it took me so long to try this place. I had only been to the main restaurant on Sepulveda and loved it. However, now not living in the area, that location is a bit of a trek, so I finally swung by this smaller joint, which is conveniently located right by the 405 freeway. I was afraid that the experience was going to be so different that it would ruin my memory of everything King's Hawaiian. Turns out, they have many of the classic entrees along with a few other unique ones to try. More importantly, I was relieved to know that they still had a bakery with all the cakes and pies, particularly the PARADISE CHEESECAKE 🤤 I'm so happy now that I know I can come here just for that
Always knew about their diner rolls but a whole restruant?! We had a great experience, their bakery rivals something the size of Portos and very delicious. I got the volcano bulgogi over rice cake noodles with a side of spam musuni and the paradise trio cheesecake for dessert. Their spam musuni was lacking a lot but the bulgogi bowl was really really good. Choosing a dessert here was almost too hard a choice but the paradise cheesecake was Delicious pineapple keylime and guava I think. Yummy! I am definaltly coming back for mochi donuts sometime soon and to try the rest of their dessert options.
An unexpected find. This smaller Kings Hawaiian restaurant is located right next door to the main bakery than makes their famous bread. They have everything from baked goods and cakes to full breakfast, lunch and dinners. They even have Done Whip! You gotta try that. Located one block north of the 405 Frwy on Western. To go or dine in. Patio seating also available. The service is excellent and friendly!
First time here. Loved it. Ordering was easy and quick. Service was friendly. The food was amazing! I regret not taking any of the bakery items home for dessert. So we will definitely be back soon
King's Hawaiian is local staple in the South Bay. I grew up having their wonderful Paradise Cakes for special occasions and the taste always reminds me of sunny summer birthdays. My favorites treats include the sweet rolls, rainbow bread slices, guava cake, and paradise cake. They also have wonderful pies, crinkle cookies, fruit tarts, and pineapple dole whip. They also have a large savory menu that is worth a try. Definitely worth a detour and visit!
Happened to be in Torrance to do some shopping. Got a taste for the Hawaiian Local Bakery & Cafe and was hungry, too! I got their Hawaiian Plantation Chicken plate and my sister got their Beef Stew plate. Oh my was it delicious 😋 and really hit the spot! The rice and macaroni salad were perfectly made and so yummy. Ate so much and did not even have room for their deserts 🍰. Going to have take some home for later.
Kings Hawaiian Bakery and Restaurant (The Local Place) in Torrance is a slice of Hawaii on a plate! There are so many amazing bakery items that are all unique to Hawaiian King's, like my favorites: Dobash, Lilikoi Crunch, Guava, and the Paradise cakes that are so light and airy! The malasadas, volcanos, fruit tarts, mochinuts, and croissants are all excellent choices, too! There is so much to choose from, and of course, the main menu is also filled with Hawaiian locals' favorites! If you are looking for a full service version, the Hawaiian King's Restaurant and Bakery located on Sepulveda is the main restaurant. You will likely encounter a longer wait, especially on the weekends, but you can't beat the ohana style atmosphere!
Effortlessly delicious. The loco moco here is such a star, even with its simple construction: rice, beef patty, eggs, gravy. You don't need much for a great meal, but because of that, each part needs to be done well. The rice was cooked where you can feel each grain, the eggs and patties were cooked well, and the gravy tied it all together. Oh yeah, they have other foods here, like the breakfast set, guava lemonade, and an array of baked goods. I can't wait to come back! Parking wasn't bad at 10AM. Plenty of street parking if needed.
5 stars just for the Paradise cake! My in laws used to bring us a paradise cake whenever they visited for one of the kids birthdays since they lived in Torrance and we lived all the way in Temecula. Now they moved to the Philippines and we moved to Alabama so obviously on my birthday when we came to visit CA I had to get my paradise cake and I wasn't disappointed. So stinking good. The food was ok. I love katsu so I enjoyed my meal. Although I did tell them I wanted the BBQ chicken and they came out with the katsu. I liked my ramen salad a lot! Makes me want to make it at home now.
I had fried rice plate with egg. I thought the portion was on the small side for the price. The taste was good just wish the portion was bigger
I went to the Local Place. They were serving breakfast only. I bought some great pastries to go. They had mochi donuts strawberry and matcha flavors, 3 flavor cupcakes, passion fruit cake, guava pastry. The selection is plentiful and everything looks so delicious, it was hard to choose. Everything tastes wonderful and flavors are superb. (Sorry I didn't take any photos)
Came here after a video I saw about the place on Instagram. Happy to say it was worth it! My husband and I came on a weekday for breakfast, we got the Breakfast combo and sandwich. The food was good, I got the Portuguese sausage in my sandwich and it was very flavorful. My husband's French toast was delicious too perfectly made. Service was friendly and kind. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained as well. Overall we enjoyed and looking forward to coming again soon!
The service was excellent. We had just come from the doctor's appointment where my husband got his foot cut open; the cashier was wonderful where she took our tray to the table cleaned off the table and made sure we had all the things we needed before we even sat down. Ordering was quick and easy we received our food promptly and the food was excellent. The atmosphere was enjoyable it was not crowded the room was not too hot or too cold a little bit chilled but outside it was getting very warm. The facility was clean and well-kept organized in the very open and spacious layout.
This place is always great but man do they need to number the menu. Ordered the Saimin but rung up for salmon and didn’t think much of it since they do sound similar. It became concerning when the same thing happened to the table next to us so maybe they can change that up by simply numbering the menu. Over all tho food was great. Recommend coming before 11 for breakfast
A pleasant neighborhood eatery. Large menu. Order at the front counter, and food is brought to you. It's not gourmet, but well prepared and good quality. Parking availability could be better at the restaurant, but there is adjacent parking across the side street. Have eaten there many times. Good experience.
I had to get teriyaki sauce due to the chicken not having much flavor. The cashier did miss a few things but was friendly. The automatic tipping screen threw me off but I tipped after the food was served. The salad was good but was quite sweet. A bit pricey but enjoyable.
Had lunch here and enjoyed it. LauLau ($15) was unique in SoCal, and I appreciate it. I think I need to learn more about hawaiian/pacific cuisines. Tuna sandwich($8) was good for anyone who don't want to try out of American norm. The fries were McD style shoestring fries. The potato salad on LauLau was sweet and savory. Reminds me of the ones from Japanese restaurants in the area.
It was cool. I didn’t think the food was as all that but the employees were really nice so I added an extra star. I got the chicken, fried rice, and ramen salad. The ramen salad had bits of raw ramen in it and it was the star of the plate. I didn’t know that the fried rice had pork in it so I almost vomited when I tasted the pork. It wasn’t advertised as having meat. They were super nice about giving me steamed rice. The chicken was okay but for it to be “Hawaiian” good, I wasn’t impressed. The pineapple ice cream thing is really good if you like cold pineapples.
Came here today for a dole whip ($5 in a cup) and my craving was satisfied 😊 This place is also my go-to when I need to buy cakes for a birthday party. My favorite is their Paradise Cake and they make this in cupcakes too. Their mochi donuts are also delicious. Their food is also pretty good. I usually swing by and order their Spam Musubi for a quick bite.
Nestled in next to the King’s Hawaiian Bakery is a little counter-service restaurant and bakery. The staff was warm and friendly and patient with our “first time here need to absorb the entire menu before making a decision” status. Things of note - once getting wrapped up in the menu we forgot that the Hawaiian rolls were the draw. We should have ordered sandwiches instead of plates to achieve the experience. The fried rice was different than any I’ve experienced- pretty sure there was Spam in it but since I haven’t had spam since childhood I’m not sure. French fries should have been cooked more. I should have asked if there was a breast meat option for the chicken. Water is only available by purchase. The desserts were delicious with a wide variety. There is also a stand with packaged rolls and treats to take home.
Stopped by The Local Place for breakfast after a few years. Last time I was here, I'd noticed three kūpuna, good friends having a spirited discussion over coffee and a pastry. Pretty sure the same guys were there today, shooting the breeze. The restaurant's vibe was different today, however. Used to be able to come in here feeling like ohana. Today? Just another customer. The next person to be served by the lone counterterrorism trying to get through the line. Sat down for the Island breakfast. It's why I came in after all these years: just wanted some King's Hawaiian French toast. That was as I'd remembered. Sweet (didn't need the syrup), light crunch with a soft (not soggy) interior. Utensils were as flimsy as ever, barely enough to cut through the bread. Lone counterperson apologized for not having ketchup for the spam, which I was totally fine with, and offered hot sauce. None of that detracted from the breakfast. Decent food at a decent place.
Their Hawaiian sweet rolls and rainbow cake are well known - the rainbow cake has a light, Asian-style sponge texture and isn’t overly sweet. The Dobash cake was also excellent, rich but not too sweet, and the Dole Whip had a nice sweet-and-tangy balance. For five people, we ordered the Ohana combo ($60). The fried rice was average, but the fried pork chop was pretty good. Overall, it’s a great spot for a casual meal and desserts. 📍 The Local Place Bakery and Cafe 18605 S Western Ave, Torrance, CA 90504
I don’t dislike it. Ordered 3 entrees and 2 sides. Chicken, Katsu, Hawaiian chicken, teriyaki beef, fried rice, and potato macaroni salad. Fried rice tasted like bonito or dashi stock. Flavors from the rest of these items are generic, or can easily be found in many Japanese or Hawaiian restaurants. Overall quality was good. I’d return if convenient, but not something I’d go out of my way for.
THEY HAVE A BEAUTIFUL FISH AQUARIUM!! No need to drive all the way to King’s Hawaiian on Sepulveda, The Local Place has many of the same bakery items, and they’re just as delicious! I ordered the Kama‘aina Plate with three entrées (beef, kalua pork, and chicken katsu), all perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I couldn’t leave without something from the bakery! I purchased a slice of pumpkin cake with a rich orange icing and a piece of bread pudding, both absolutely fantastic. I also met Amethyst, the manager, who was such a sweetheart and provided outstanding customer service. My only small critique is that I wish the same friendliness she shows could be reflected a bit more by the rest of the staff, especially at the register. Overall, a great experience, I can’t wait to go back for more bakery treats and another delicious meal!
I've only ever visited King's Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant on Sepulveda which is full service, so I wish I had discovered The Local Place sooner. Conveniently located off the 405 freeway at Western Avenue, this offshoot of King's Hawaiian is more fast casual yet features many of the same menu and bakery items you can find at their parent location. Mahalo to the staff for their friendly and efficient service. I ordered the Breakfast Loco Moco which was a solid choice, but the serving size was on the smaller side probably due to it being a breakfast item. I washed it down with a sweet cup of Iced Vanilla Kona Coffee. I also got a Spam Musubi and Mac Salad to go that provided a delightful snack later in the day. King's Hawaiian serves up great tasting Hawaiian food but IMO the bakery is where it's at. I was in a rush or I def would've picked up some sweets to go. You can't go wrong with any bakery item but if you haven't tried the Paradise Cake yet, where have you been??
First time at King's Hawaiian Bakery and Restaurant. I was really looking forward to eating their fried chicken and I found it a little bland. In MY humble opinion the chicken was lacking seasoning. The spam masubi was on point. The rice was perfectly cooked with a nice slab of Spam. I will have to try their other location.
Parking spaces are tight and small. The vibe is ok. The food is delicious. Had the Miso Salmon and the Plantation Fried Chicken. Very tasty and worth trying. Lots of selections of dessert and Kings breads. The Hawaiian music tracks are... tacky Hawaiian. All in all was fun and enjoyable. Get the Chicken.
This place is amazingly good, on this particular trip we picked up desserts. All their baked goods are amazing. They have plenty of fresh items to choose from as well as bagged items. Parking is pretty small in this location, and the dine area is very small as well. So I seriously recommend either get there early or plan on taking out. Either way this place is great.
The Local Place is a nice little hidden cafe in the middle of an industrial area. The food is good and the desserts from the bakery even better. And they have pineapple Dole Whip soft serve and floats for sale just like the ones from Disneyland! The parking lot is relatively small but parking is also available the street. I reccomend calling your order in during rush hours.
I ordered the Loco moco the beef patties were small and the eggs over cooked. The flavor was OK and the brown gravy was a little salty. The meat had some seasoning but it was lacking. My friend ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl with fried rice but the sauce over the chicken was salty. The chicken was seasoned well and cooked. She ended up getting a new bowl but there was white rice and not fried rice in there.
I have had really good pork sliders catered so many times from here. I was craving them this evening, saw some amazing photos online, and decided to go and grab some. I arrived and they didn't have them. So I decided to get some spam musubi. They were microwaved and dry. I got a dole whip and the center was hollow, there was no syrup in it like there was in the images on yelp. I was really disappointed. Oh and they were out of lilikoi also. Man what a bummer deal.
First time here. I bought the grilled chickens the fruit mini parfait cup. Total was 15.67 The chicken teriyaki sandwich came with no teriyaki sauce. An employee named lamar was getting water. I asked for a water cup. she got the cup of water for me strangely, but thank you. Rayu, the employee who took my order and gave me my food, he needed to go home he working sick and sneezing. I asked for an extra teriyaki sauce, and he said it would be an extra charge. Luckily, I checked my food and planned on doing a review for my first-time food location. Walked in, and I think his name was Scott gave me some sauce. It was not none on my food. Sandwich ok
I was so excited to try The Local Place especially being that I just came back from HI. The service wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. It felt like I was forcing the cashier to speak to me. I got the Moco Loco. It has absolutely no seasoning. It’s very bland. I could have went for more gravy as well. I prefer my macaroni salad with no potatoes. This is more like potato salad. My pastries were delicious. They didn’t make it out the parking lot. The orange chicken was lacking sauce. I’ll be back but I probably won’t be ordering a meal. I could have gone to Ono or L&L for much more seasoned food.
Almond Danish was delicious. Servers were polite and excellent. Food plate though was terrible. Chicken Katsu was thin and the sweet sauce tasted old. Pork and fried rice was too smoky. Your executive team should figure out how Ono Hawaiian BBQ does there food. I know Kings is more focused on breads which is amazing, but if you’d like to attack the food plates w 5 stars, study Ono’s meats and marinades and plate portions. Thank you otherwise.
Service can be a bit slow when ordering inside. The lines do confuse the guest. You can be in line waiting for Service and you will wait while watching the cashiers pass the registers multiple times until you get Service. The chicken is hard as if it has been sitting out. To hide that the chicken gets drenched in tons of teriyaki sauce to hide the hard chicken that made my stomach hurt.
The people who work there are great. Really friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Great decor and atmosphere. We came here because of the great reviews and unfortunately felt underwhelmed. The dried noodles were straight up soy sauce--no umami or sweet Hawaii 🌺 flavors--just straight bitter Kikkoman. Spam musubi is ok because there was no flavor on the spam. Just dried out rice that's wrapped with old seaweed. Teriyaki bowl was dry, but tolerable. The mochi donut was decent, especially the maple 🍁 flavored one.
I was given two pies for my birthday this Saturday but I felt the pie was old. The strawberries were mushiey and the bananas were brown. Talk about inflation they were 35 dollars each. Not to mention, my stomach reacted in the worst way possible to them . Hope my guest's didnt get the same reaction. I called to speak to a manager yesterday and I haven't received a call back. We loved this pies when they were fresh long time ago and if 35 dollar were spent on each pie at least they should be good.
Usually eat at the main restaurant in Torrance. This time i tried The local place thinking I’m goung to get the same saimin. $8.65 on the board but charged $11. Broth and noodles were ok. Bit the scrambled egg tastes like it was cooked last week(chewy), no kamaboko, the char siu crumbles when chewed as if it was old. Very disappointed. Not coming back or recommending. Saimin is so easy to put together but still messed it up☹️
Me and my coworker were driving by around lunch time. We went inside seeking a unique experience worthy of the delicious King Hawaiian dinner rolls. Unfortunately, this place lacks taste and service. First of all, forget about getting a lovely King Hawaiian roll with your order. We both ordered plates, and we didn't get any rolls. Second, the food was 3 out of 10 @ the best. I had beef teriyaki and Hawaiian chicken (apparently just some fried chicken dry pieces). No real taste. And third, the service is terrible. While we were @ the store (we dined in), none of the workers/servers came to ask if we needed anything. Then, I asked for a cup of water, to be told that due to Covid-19, I had to purchase a bottle of water. No problem, Covid-19 safety rules ought to be applied. Then, our server (they bring the food to your table) never brought the bottle of water, or even extra napkins. And when I asked for some sauce, she was quick to tell me "$0.50 ... actually $0.55" (10% extra for taxes). So, she was happy, joyful and eager to charge me for the sauce, while providing the least amount of service as possible. Did I mention that the water bottle was for $1.95 plus tax? In conclusion, the only good thing was a piece of dessert that I took back to the office (it wasn't what I asked for, but it was great and amazingly fresh). Maybe this restaurant was amazing prior to Covid-19 and its impact on the labor market; still, there was a manager (I spoke to her before we left), and she never bothered to walk around to check on the wellbeing of the guests.
Unfortunately, this place has gone downhill for us! Sad! We've been here several times before but the last couple times our food have been poorly made. We visited yesterday and ordered several items. Fried chicken plate, fried noodles, teriyaki chicken plate, and side of fried rice. We also ordered 3 slices of chocolate dobash cake and lilikoi mochi donut. Our fried chicken was under cooked! Nasty! Our fried noodles and toppings were overcooked! Our teriyaki chicken was nasty and rubbery! Our fried rice was spoiled! Couldn't even eat it! My husband got sick! Throwing up and diarrhea! 🤮🤢 Very disappointing!!!!!! We will no longer eat here!!!! We will go to the full service restaurant in Torrance off Sepulveda!!! Only items we could eat we're the desserts! So there's that!?! Really sad because we love Kings Hawaiian! 😥🥹 ***Edit*** I appreciate the management reaching out! Mahalo for your EXCELLENT customer service! 🌺
ordered pretzel chicken sliders. served with uncooked chicken, then showed the kitchen to confirm if it was cooked and they confirmed it was not cooked. served me another plate for the mistake, i received it slightly more cooked than the first time but still needed more time for the chicken to turn white inside. don’t come here !! why are they rushing to bring out the chicken fast? leaving it uncooked both times
