Had a wonderful lunch here while driving to Albuquerque. Homemade bread, excellent Hickory burger, wonderful bacon. A wonderful stop on route 66.
My wife and I were traveling to Illinois and stopped there for breakfast. It's a family owned place with really good food. They had home made bread the day we were there.
This place was awesome. Great value with home cooked charm. A definite must. The ladies hustle and make you feel right at home.
We ate lunch here 2 weeks ago passing through on our way to Arizona. We loved it so much... the food and the one's serving and cooking that on our way back through... we are stopping back here to eat breakfast. Cannot wait to get the blueberry pancakes..... 😁😁😁
Some of the best food we have had. Great and friendly service. Love the atmosphere. Definitely recommend eating here
Excellent service, attitude! Has parking even for a 26' straight truck. We had breakfast... Fantastic! Highly recommend. Better than eating at the Pilot.
I looked up breakfast places after I filled up my gas tank. Passing through heading to San Diego, CA. I had the farmers breakfast. I am a big eater and it filled me up. Friendly waitress and very helpful. Thanks for your generosity.
We had breakfast there and it was really good. We both had an omelette with hashbrowns and toast. Love the bread used for the toast. The service was excellent, the restaurant was clean.
The stuff is super sweet, the place is cozy and the food delicious, if you are traveling you have to stop here and breathe the real Texas 😋
We stopped here on our cross country trip to Atlanta and they had awesome texas food. Good parking for Uhaul or RV and friendly staff.
Great food. My family of 9 ate for 65.00 bucks. Great little place with home cooked food. Portions were so big. Good job guys. I wish we lived closer.
Yummy! Yummy! Yummy! Delicious homemade food and served with a smile! Fantastic food and friendly staff!! Worth the 45 minute drive and we'll be will be back absolutely!
Any sandwich can be served with homemade bread. Make the choice!!! The bread they make for the restaurant is the bomb. Great people serving good fresh well portioned meals. Love this joint
Wonderful Cafe! It was cute and clean, the service was fast, and it was the best food we have had our whole trip traveling from Nebraska to Texas. Thank you!
I like fresh food. Everything we had was made at Hickory Inn, nothing was previously frozen. Try the chicken fried steak.
Awesome steak and chile omellete, so good. Great service and fair prices, food was worth double what I paid. I highly recommend the Hickory Inn Cafe to anyone in the area, or passing through.
This is a great Cafe. Stopped here last year and posted then. This year had it planned to eat here again and wasn't disappointed. So if your in Texas along I-40. When you get to Vegas Texas stop for lunch. Yum.
We were passing through and we stopped for breakfast, the food was delicious! Friendly, fast service. Clean dinning area and clean restrooms!
Very good food. We went out of our way to eat here and it was worth it. Highly recommended.
Super nice little restaurant, which I believe is located on old Route 66. The food was excellent, service was great, prices reasonable. We will stop here again in the future.
If your ever near Vega Texas and want a home cooked meal this is your place. We loved it bisquits and gravy were great. Very nice people!!!!
Just had lunch there. Best Montey Cristo I have had. Very good service, cleaning super welcoming! Definitely will be back when heading home.
Went with the family for breakfast and got the cowboy breakfast. The waitresses were attentive and the pancakes were great.
Amazing food, amazing customer service. Best breakfast place in town. Big breakfast portions and delicious too. Spot on. Thank you very much.
Rule number one of the south “never judge a place by its outward appearance.” One of the better chicken fried steaks I’ve had in Texas. Probably within my top five. Gravy is homemade and the green beans are stewd with bacon or ham. It taste like Grandmas. The kids who work there and people are respectable and friendly. I watched some locals call the police eating breakfast inside by their first names. A place where folks know each other and tip their hats. Vega and this cafe have outstanding food and have a very “Mayberry” feel to it. I love coming here to escape the fast pace of Amarillo. Great place to come on the weekend if you want to slow down a bit and enjoy a hot meal or walk the town of Vega.
Go out of your way (it's just off I-40 in Vega, TX) to eat here. It's a family owned restaurant with a good selection of home cooked meals. I had the chicken fried steak with home fries, served with homemade wheat toast - all of it was fantastic! Chatted a bit with owners Jeff and Amy - great people! May try the breakfast there tomorrow...
This is an excellent little cafe! The food is made fresh and by hand, and it makes a noticeable difference. Very happy we found this little place 👍🏼
Don't let the outside appearance fool you, the food is fantastic. Hand cut french fries fresh baked bread and buns. The overall quality of this menu is great. The service was really good.
We were passing thru on our way to Arizona. Stopped in for lunch. It was very good food. Very friendly and food was great.
Oh my goodness ......skip Amarillo.....drive to Vega. It's not far and this by far was the best breakfast we've every had! Family owned and run.....nicest people ever.....biscuits like we've never had.....split and grilled.....the pancakes best we've ever had....fluffy and so yummy. The Vega Omelet is a must. Ya'll, this review from our group of four......top breakfast ever!!!!
Had the Hickory Burger and sweet potato fries. Husband had the Chicken Fried Steak, house-made bread (delicious!) on the side. Excellently prepared, good home style food. Go, if you're in Vega.
This was a great restaurant. Nice server and cashier great prices. The breakfast had huge portions and tasted great! Will go back next time I'm driving interstate 40 through Vega tx!
It was really good! The gravy was extremely good as well as the mashed potatoes. The chicken fried chicken was good as well, it was all very fresh! Will definitely stop by again if I'm in the area.
Wanted to go to the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, but it was closed...lucky for me, because Hickory Inn was amazing! It's right off the highway, very low key, but amazing breakfast. Homefries are amazing and the Vega omelette is fantastic. Would definitely come back.
Bacon, turkey, avocado sandwich was delicious. And the tender onion rings seem to be home made. Clean, friendly, easy to get to. Parking for vehicles with trailers. Nice experience.
Excellent chicken fried steak. Hand cut fries are good, I ordered them extra crispy. Side salad was good too.
What a gem! Super friendly owner/waitress and staff. Great food, giant side salad, and home brewed iced tea. A quick detour off of I-40 and directly on Historic Route 66. Every single person eating in this small cafe talked to us and were quite possibly the friendliest people we have ever met! Give this woman all your buisness if you are driving through Vega...
On our way to the Grand Canyon we decided to stop by and have breakfast here, my sons, I, and my boyfriend has their breakfast sandwiches. Not only was the service amazing, but the sandwiches came with a fresh slice of watermelon. I highly recommend this place. It was beyond clean and the service was fantastic!
Food was totally delicious. I had a Denver omelet that was to die for. Biscuits & gravy were excellent. Wife had Vega omelet which she said melted in her mouth. She also had a pancake that was to die for. Service was great. Restaurant is small. Food is made with love.
Every time I go through Texas I stop here. The food is of higher quality and they have soda in the glass bottle with real sugar. Which is a big plus for me that's the only kind of soda I drink. You got to love Texas there's a lot of great people there.
Nice Route 66 meal with great people and great food.
A little pricey, BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!! OMG, this food was amazing! I had the Hickory Wrap. Best wrap I've ever had! My husband had the fried chicken strips. I took a bite, and after the initial super crispy crunch, it just melted in my mouth (my salivary glands are squirting, remembering this), meat and all.
I've ate the chicken fried steak, chicken, fried chicken, double cheeseburger with bacon. It is always been so good and plenty of it. Thank you all so much. This is a little slice of heaven in a small town.
This restaurant serves excellent down home country food. The staff is always on the ball and friendly. This is a great stop for any local or hungry traveler looking for a bite to eat
My family and I stopped in here on a road trip for lunch and were very impressed even my picky eater loved the food. We ordered the Turkey Club, Fish and Chips, Green Chile Burger, and The regular burger. For sides we had tots, fries, okra and onion rings. All of the food was VERY delicious!! Everyone was so friendly as well. We plan on definitely coming here again if we pass back through.
Had one of the best Hickory Bacon Cheeseburgers I've enjoyed in my life here. Was passing through on a cross country trip and found this place just west of Amarillo. Sweet Potato fries were amazing, and the sweet tea was even better than the stuff near my home in South Georgia! Friendly staff, and clean inside. Cool vintage look outside made it a really fun experience!
Super breakfast! We came at lunchtime and asked for breakfast (eggs&hashbrowns) as we are vegetarian and don‘t eat meat. They were so nice and made us fantastic breakfast!!! Even the restaurant was busy for lunchtime. Thank you! The burgers and everything else looked so delicious-even we don‘t eat meat… Very clean and nice decorated restaurant. We highly recommend coming here!!!
Wonderful food , and a lot of it. You can get lunch and dinner from the big portions . Fresh, good hamburgers ! 🥰🙏💕
What a special find. Great service. Good quality, generous portions and flavorful food. Clean restroom.
Pretty sure the burgers were fresh ground to order, if not they had to be ground that morning. Quick service and friendly staff kept people moving, a lot of carry out while we were there. Definitely seemed like a local hot spot for lunch, basic dining area with attached open kitchen.
You know the food is great when all of the locals eat there! It's small and quaint, but the food doesn't disappoint! The food portion is perfect! Everything is made fresh to include the bread for toast! My omelette was amazing, even made with fresh avocados! My wife and children's eggs and pancakes were all freshly made and full of flavor! The best meal on the road traveling from AZ to AL and back!! You'll be happy you stopped!
We love to find local eateries while we travel and breakfast places seem to be the one we take the most time to stop for. This one was a great find in Vega! Friendly staff, simple but good menu, good food! We can be somewhat coffee snobs and the coffee was good! Yay for a new place to land on our next trip out west.
Without hesitation, stop here to eat!! FRESH delicious food. The green chili corn is a perfect side or add it to a salad. The ranch salad dressing is homemade and thick and fresh. The chicken fried steak is hand battered and served with perfectly creamy mashed potatoes. If you like country green beans with bacon and onion, this is your place! The comfortable atmosphere and quick, friendly service make this a perfect stop. An additional bonus, the bathroom is clean and cute. It was the perfect travel stop and we avoided Amarillo traffic. Hoping this place stays in business forever. We wish them continued success!!!
Great place in all respects. Great food. Great service. You don't get a hamburger this good very often. Chicken fried chicken and vegetables were great as well. Put them on your list to try. It's worth going out of your way!
we stopped in on our way to gallup, ,nm and was pleasantly surprised by the food, the service and the environment , give this place a try, best breakfast we had in texas!! our server was informative about the surrounding area, and she was top notch in caring for us!
Food was great and plentiful and the staff was friendly.
This was a little cafe off the beaten track. We were desperate for food, so we thought to give it a try, and we are glad we did! My shrimp and his chicken basket were so surprisingly good, and the fries were awesome 👌
The 3-egg omelette is super delicious. The toast was made with home made bread. I got some salsa for my omelette and later found out it was also homemade. Super delicious all the way. This place is a “MUST stop by”. Y’all, let’s keep small businesses like this open!
Telling you right now. A must go eat place if you enjoy home cooking like grandma's way. A great small friendly place. Go and find out for yourself. Kids will love the Cars movie look like old tad different bit still great pic opt. Just loved the young lady that waited on us. We are from mountains of South Carolina so felt at home. Thank y'all
This place represents what’s good about small town/rural America, the people were friendly, everyone seemed to know each other and even though we were out of Towners they still said hey. But being friendly in a restaurant isn’t worth a 5 star review. The food was delicious, everyone enjoyed their meal. The lumberjack breakfast, I had the Vega omelette And my friend had the Route 66. The portions were filling, the food was good, my omelet was incredible and the prices were reasonable. If you’re driving through Vera for whatever reason this is a good place to stop for breakfast Now this is corona times so I have to put this for those that are conscious of it they don’t wear masks here, me personally idc the food was great and the service was amazing. I highly recommend this place
Barn style restaurant on the outside. Modern, small cafe on the inside. I got the Hickory smoked ham sandwich and it was wonderful! A little pricier than we expected but worth the stop. Wait staff was friendly as well.
For a middle of nowhere diner this place is impressive! The service is country, southern hospitality and so great! The food is fantastic! We got the hickory burger and Cobb salad and both were delicious! They have lots of options for whatever you're in the mood for. Stop by and say hi, leave full and happy!
On the road with my hubby so we Googled restaurants near the truck stop we were headed to, and saw Hickory Inn had 4.5 stars by 130+ people ~ we bob-tailed over here while waiting for our load. We were going to stop & shower before eating, but since we saw they closed at 2p, decided to get our grub on first. Glad we did! Service was stellar (Thanks Kenny!) and we both agreed the food was ahhh-mazing! I admit I ended up wimping out and took the roasted jalapeños off my Route 66 burger ~ LoL 😆
Fantastic home style food comes in huge portions! Our food was all hand breaded, including the popcorn shrimp which always seems to be pre-breaded and frozen everywhere else. All of our meals came with handfuls of hand cut french fries and we left stuffed!
The 4 of us had a fantastic breakfast! Historic building, fabulous food, great people, Tatum waa very personable...this is a "must stop" breakfast or lunch destination on Route 66.
Amazing food and prices. HUGE servings. Very friendly. I have traveled around this whole country. This is in my top three best restaurants in US. The other two being Monteagle country buffet in Monteagle, TN and Charlestons Restaurant in Indianapolis. Seriously, you can plan weeklong eatcations at any of these three places and go home very satisfied.
Great food, service and atmosphere. Great stop on Rte 66. Breakfast burrito was delicious and homemade French toast was fabulous. Good photo ops too
Lovely, family run restaurant. Great food and nice clientele
We made a small pitstop on our road trip. We couldn’t love this little restaurant more. Felt like it was right out of a small town movie set. The food was fantastic, the service was great, and the people were all so genuine and nice. We had a great experience and we’ll be back next time we’re passing through.

I had the crispy chicken sandwich and it was delicious! The staff were very friendly so I definitely recommend this small town Cafe to anyone traveling through Vega.
5 stars because i cant give 10 this place is fantastic genuine staff excellent menu great food fast reasonable prices what eles could you want perfect! thank you for breakfast ladies
Very good family owned restaurant. Great service and good food.
Lovely quant diner situated on Route 66 in the heart of Vega. Great food and great people. Stop in and grab some grub!
Been coming here since they opened. The staff are super friendly and the food is flavorful as always!
What a great restaurant. Marcy, the cook and the 3 Sheriff's we met were so kind and friendly. We had the absolute best BLT we have ever had! I highly recommend the Hickory Inn Cafe. A real gem.

Food was good and so was service. Nice little place to stop and eat on the route!
But you were traveling and we were a little bit on the hungry side early morning so we stopped in this little cap right to have something to eat for breakfast the courtesy of the South and the taste of the food and clean this is very nice you can tell that it was a city Town Cafe because of the farmers and different people coming in and out even a DPS officer stop and get breakfast guys keep up the good work your food taste as good and you're cleaning us and nice building and your attitude and personality made it where I will be back when we travel up that way again.
A hidden small-town, flatland secret. My husband ordered the Vega omelet with a side of biscuit and gravy; but, ridiculous me, I ordered a standard of eggs, bacon and pancakes. Don't get me wrong...mine was good, but his was heavenly. Not being a coffee drinker except for fun trips but loving theirs, I asked what brand they used...and the answer is: Folgers.
This is a small place we stopped at when passing through Vega Texas. The food was good for a small place and cooked fresh. The sever was working by herself and working hard getting the food out.
Food was typical café fare. I was pleasantly surprised to see New Mexico green chile available on the menu and it was very good. Asked the waiver for more black pepper and he never returned. Took pepper from another table. Waiter never offered a refill for my iced tea.
Nice local eatery for breakfast and lunch. Got the sliced beef and chili pepper sandwich. Very good.
For a small town with an I-40 bypass, the Hickory Inn Cafe is a pretty good place to eat. The web said it opened at 6:00 a.m., so I arrived at 6:45 to a closed shop with several regulars waiting. At 7:00, it opened. The food was good, with large portions. The coffee was better than average. The waiter/bus boy/cashier was pleasant. There were about 6 regulars that took their same table, but he waited on me first. The restroom (singular) was clean, as was the rest of the restaurant. Don't know that I'll ever be back in Vega, TX, but I'll eat here again if I am.
Cute, pretty yummy, but strict on breakfast cut off time. Also gave our kids some "Snowman soup" recipe and ingredients for Xmas!

A bit pricey for breakfast but just like home cooking. $14 for one egg hash browns toast bacon sausage and coffee. Small Cafe with friendly staff.
I really prefer local spots like this one to the many chains but this one fell short on cleanliness and attention to detail (never got a napkin or silverware). Burger and fries were pretty decent.
Hot and stuffy inside, but people are great and food was fantastic.
This was a nice spot to stop into for a quick dinner. The staff was friendly and the food came out quickly, which was decent. Yhe prices aren't bad either, and the options of chips or fries is a great afd I tonight to most meals. It's a little awkward and small (and the bathroom door is stubborn to open and close) but really it's a good spot.
It wasn't horrible, but the whole staff seemed distracted by each other. My husband ordered chicken fried steak and received chicken fried chicken. They didn't care, because that's what was written on the ticket. Oh well, it was good.

Once upon a time. Really great food. Even featured on a popular food channel. I have always stopped here to eat on my way out west. This is my last time to stop here. The food was so bad. I didnt eat it nor did my friend. I was shocked. BTW....It was breakfast we tried to eat. Sorry but never again. Jeff. It was a Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m.. The eggs came to me with brown edges. The toast was nasty. The sausage I couldnt eat. The crispy hash browns I asked for were dripping with grease and not crispy. I was sad that the food quality was so bad. I always looked forward to getting to Vega Texas to eat with your restaurant. But, not any more.
We visit family in Vega several times a year. This was such a great place specifically for breakfast. We used to bring our whole huge family in regularly. Today we were shocked to see a one egg bacon and toast breakfast for$13!!!! It goes up from there. Service was always fantastic, today we couldn't even get a coffee refill. We sat for nearly an hour while all the staff was in the back. Waitress didn't come back. I literally had to call the restaurant while standing at the register just to pay our bill after a frustrating wait and yelling out for service at the register. Nothing on the menu is less than right about $13+. We spent near $40 dollars for two of us for eggs and bacon with a single biscuit. Loves is a better choice at this rate. Amarillo served us a steak dinner for less last night. We won't be coming back to this place to pay this kind of money for breakfast. We work too hard to pay this much for literally the cheapest meal a restaurant can offer. Really sad to see a great place mistreat their clients this way.
Hickory Inn Cafe is not worth going out of your way for and lands firmly at a 2-star experience. The appeal here is almost entirely nostalgic. Being located on Historic Route 66 gives the place an initial sense of promise, and from the outside it reads like a classic roadside stop that should deliver comfort food and character. Unfortunately, the experience does not live up to that expectation. Food quality is the primary issue. Dishes are edible but forgettable, with flavors that feel flat and poorly executed for a diner setting. This is the kind of menu that should excel at simple things done well, but instead delivers meals that feel rushed and lacking care. Nothing stood out as particularly good, and several items felt closer to cafeteria quality than a destination-worthy Route 66 stop. Service was functional but uninspired. Orders were taken and delivered without major errors, but there was little warmth, engagement, or attentiveness that might compensate for the food. It felt transactional rather than welcoming. The interior atmosphere leans heavily on nostalgia, but it comes across as tired rather than charming. Wear and age are noticeable, and not in a way that adds character. Instead, it reinforces the sense that the place has not evolved or been maintained to match modern expectations. Overall, this is a stop you make only if you are already passing through and have limited options nearby. The Route 66 name carries far more weight than the actual experience. A disappointing visit that does not justify its reputation or its location.

Food is great. If you are handicapped and need a service dog. You are not allowed in. Owner is rude . I work in the trucking industry. I guarantee a whole bunch of people will stop coming to this restaurant. I am broke down here in Vega and wanted a cold drink. PS if I or my dogs get heat stroke. He will pay my medical expenses.
They stopped serving breakfast at 10:30... they do not have decaf coffee. The water tasted terrible. The service was great! What food we did order was good. Guess I was looking forward to breakfast... totally disappointed. Should have stopped at Russell's.
Horrible Place. An armpit. We went in for Breakfast. We asked the Waitress, if they had Decaf. She said " YES ". Then she sneakily talked to the Owner, & came back & said, " NO Decaf. " Then we ordered 2 omelettes, & we asked the Waitress, " can we have Home Fries, instead of Hash Browns?? " The Waitress said "YES". After a long wait, the waitress brought the omelettes to the table, both with Ugly Hash Browns. When we asked, " Where are the Home Fries, that you said we could have???" The Waitress said: " the owner said *NO Home Fries* " So we had had enough Lies. We got up & walked out. Beware of this Restaraunt. The Waitress is a Liar. The Owner is a Liar. They do not have Real Butter, either. They use Margarine. The owner is a Liar, AND a Cheapskate. Beware. This Dump is an Armpit. Beware.
