This is a well-maintained archeological site/park with ruins and path surrounding. I enjoyed visiting and learning about the history here. It doesn’t take long to see the park and small adjoining museum/exhibit. The cost of entry for foreigners was fairly inexpensive- only a few dollars and payable via ApplePay.
Interesting Mayan ruins. There are informative signs throughout in Spanish and English. It doesn't take long to go through it all but the cost to get in was only $6 for non-locals. The shops nearby had interesting souvenirs that we didn't see in San Salvador.
It's such a nice site to visit! It's relatively close to Santa Ana and It's very interesting. You can climb up to one of the "towers" and enjoy their museum where you can understand more about it
These are the largest Mayan ruins in El Salvador. You are able to climb on these ruins which was suprising to me, but since the ruins have been covered in concrete I guess that makes it ok. There is a small museum and bathrooms as well.
Such a great experience, the guide spoke English and she was sweet and helpful. Great place
Sito molto bello, ben curato e valorizzato.
Interessante museo inserito nelle rovine Maya
A well maintained site with a lush compound and good access. Now, while there is a considerable amount of renovation and several artifacts from the on-site museum have been relocated to the national museum, the site is worth visiting to see the pyramid in person from up close. The photos come out nice as well! They have preserved some of the original structure for you to see in a protected section. It was kinda cool to be able to climb some of the structure (where allowed). You don't need more than an hour here as the archaeological park doesn't extend much beyond the main pyramid. Expect the weather to be humid and warm.
The Mayan Tazumal site in El Salvador offers an outstanding museum that’s very well presented, labeled and maintained. We had a guide, bring us through the entire outdoor temple space and on the indoor museum tour. The indoor tour is in Spanish, so it will help if you know how to speak Spanish. The museum site is actually maintained by the French so much of the museum descriptions are in French even on the signs on the outdoor sites. The entire tour took us about 45 minutes to an hour, and it was well worth it. The history of how these were built is fascinating and it tells a great story about that time period and the current El Salvador people. 🇸🇻 There is even an ancient sports field behind the temple which is believed to be a gameplay much like soccer. ⚽️ The field is actually an optical illusion that appears to be a warped rectangle, but it’s actually perfect in dimensions as a rectangle. PRO TIP: When you leave, there is a great little restaurant right across the street that serves deep fried yucca and pupusas. This will probably be the best deep fried Yucca in the country. 😋
You do not need to do an excursion just get their rent a car 🚗. If you need to rent a car go to this website (carviapp). It's on tikTok Danny & Vanessa Flores they speak Spanish they're from El Salvador 🇸🇻 & English. Make sure you download WhatsApp this is the only way you will communicate with anyone in El Salvador without using your data and getting charged. The area is very beautiful you'll see a lot of Ruins and learn a lot of El Salvadorian 🇸🇻 history. I highly recommend you renting a car and not taking Uber they will charge an arm and a leg.
Beautiful place and so weird that the city is just outside. Tour guides are included, I recommend tipping though they don’t expect it. Stop by casa Blanca afterwards, it’s very close by. Wear a hat and sunscreen because the sun is strong here. We spent over an hour here but that was due to souvenir shopping. Prices are so so, at the outside stalls. You can park along the street that the park is on. No parking fee. I bought agua de maracuya for $0.50 at one of the outside stalls.
This site is absolutely worth a visit and exceeded expectations. Admission was very affordable, making it accessible for all types of travelers. Once inside, the area is easy to explore on foot, with well-maintained paths and plenty of signage to guide you through. We found convenient and free parking just outside the main gate along the street, which saved us both time and money. While the on-site museum is quite small and contains only a modest collection of artifacts, it still provides helpful context and background information about the history and significance of the ruins. The real highlight, however, is the site itself — the ancient Maya structures and surrounding grounds are truly impressive. There’s a peaceful atmosphere throughout the area, and you can take your time wandering through the ruins, admiring the architecture and imagining what life might have been like centuries ago. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious, take it from this anthropologist, it's worth the visit
Wow, what an experience! This archaeological site was just as stunning as I'd hoped it would be. Finding parking was a cinch, which started things off on the right foot. Plus, the ticket process was super smooth — no waiting around at all! Inside, I loved that I could take my time and soak everything in without feeling rushed. The option for a tour guide was great too; it added so much depth to my visit. Honestly, this place exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend checking it out!
Visiting Parque Arqueológico Tazumal was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip to El Salvador. Tucked away in the peaceful town of Chalchuapa, this ancient Maya site is a true cultural treasure that transports you back over 1,000 years. The pyramid itself is stunning—larger and more impressive than I expected, with original steps and platforms still intact. Walking around the ruins, you can feel the weight of history, yet the park is beautifully kept, peaceful, and surrounded by lush greenery. I especially loved the small on-site museum, which gives you insight into the people who once lived here, their customs, and the ceremonial importance of the area. The staff were friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. It’s a perfect half-day trip if you’re exploring western El Salvador or making your way toward Santa Ana. Plus, the surrounding area has local vendors where you can grab fresh pupusas and souvenirs. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting El Salvador—whether you’re a history buff or just want a unique, quiet spot to soak in the beauty of this country’s rich past. 🇸🇻✨
A Fascinating Window into Ancient Civilization!!! Visiting Tazumal in Chalchuapa, El Salvador, was an unforgettable experience and truly a hidden gem for history lovers and curious travelers alike! This archaeological site offers a rich glimpse into the Maya-Pipil culture, blending mystery, history, and beauty in a tranquil setting. Tazumal is particularly special for the impressive pyramid architecture – The centerpiece is the massive stepped pyramid, remarkably well-preserved and striking against the lush green surroundings. It's fascinating to stand before a structure that dates back over a thousand years and imagine the ceremonies, trade, and daily life that once took place here. You will enjoy a beautiful, peaceful grounds – The park is clean, well-maintained, and not overcrowded, so you can really soak in the atmosphere without feeling rushed. It’s surrounded by flowering trees and shaded walkways—perfect for a leisurely stroll. There also a small on-site museum is compact but packed with artifacts like obsidian tools, ceramic urns, and ancient sculptures. One highlight is the statue of Xipe Totec, a rare and intriguing find for Mesoamerican scholars and casual visitors alike. It's recommended to hire insightful local guides –at the entrance, as totally worth it! He explained the significance of the pyramid’s layers, burial rituals, and the site's connection to other Mesoamerican cities. It added so much depth to the visit. Great place for Photography & Exploration – Tazumal offers plenty of scenic spots for photos, especially early in the morning or late afternoon. Don’t forget to check out the ancient ball court and the surrounding ruins beyond the main pyramid. Some cultural & culinary Bonus – Right outside the site, you’ll find artisan vendors selling crafts, and small eateries serving up traditional Salvadoran pupusas. It’s a great way to round out your visit with some local flavor. Some tips, please bring water, sun protection, and comfortable shoes. While the site isn't huge, it invites you to slow down and explore every corner thoughtfully. Tazumal is a must-see destination for anyone interested in archaeology, ancient cultures, or off-the-beaten-path travel. It’s a serene, meaningful place where history comes alive—definitely worthy of 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
This was a really nice location. There was lots of street parking available, making it easy to get to the front gate. The price was only $5.00 each since we were foreigners to me is very cheap. We got a guide her name was Julia and she was really sweet and knowledgeable. That day, they had a ceremony, and that was cool we with prayers to all directions of the earth. I videoed the whole ceremony. The museum had artifacts from the site excavation, which werw in perfect shape. Overall, it's worth the money, and yes, you can climb on some of the areas, but they don't let you up to the top for safety and preservation.
In a normal urban neighborhood you find pyramids, how cool is that? I do recommend using the services of the guides, they give a lot of interesting information. They have a museum, bathroom and in front there's a bunch of shops. The pyramid site is small with so much left unexcavated because of fear collapsing earth, who knows what's still undiscovered, but at least we have a glimpse of the past
Place is cool if you like archeology and history. Very small place but very clean and well maintained. The price is $5.00 per person and extra if you want a guided tour. Salvador residents are $1.00. The grass is green and strong.the bathrooms are very clean. You can’t cross the rope, don’t try. you can get arrested for anything in this country so be respectful at all times.
