El Xolo was such a wonderful find during our recent trip to San Salvador! The food was incredible—flavorful and innovative plates with local, traditional roots. It’s at the museum of anthropology, so I highly recommend going to the museum and then going over to Xolo for dinner. We celebrated a birthday and we were given a complimentary dessert as well. All in all, beautiful restaurant, awesome atmosphere, and delicious food!

Very creative dishes to represent Salvadoran ingredients. The food was delicious and the wine pairing went perfectly with the tasting menu. The service was also top notch! Would love to go back if I'm in San Salvador again

An incredible experience! The food, cocktails, service, and vibes are all top tier! The open kitchen gives it such a warm feeling being able to see it in action. Definitely a must try if ever in El Salvador!

Perhaps the best El Salvadoran resto in El Salvador. Food is superb, interiors are eclectic, clean and modern yet has a definitive character. Service is attentive.

Came here celebrating my anniversary while visiting El Salvador and this restaurant was amazing. We did the tasting menu with cocktail pairing experience and it was phenomenal, everything was very flavorful and delicious. Our waiter was very nice explaining all the dishes and being very attentive. The chef was also so kind so do something extra for us celebrating our anniversary and just making the experience over the top and truly memorable. I highly recommend anyone coming to do the tasting experience.

This Salvadoran restaurant is an absolute treasure! The dishes are a perfect fusion of traditional Salvadoran flavors with a sophisticated fine dining twist. Every bite was a delightful journey, showcasing creativity and respect for authentic recipes. The drinks were just as impressive/unique, refreshing, and perfectly crafted to complement the meal. The ambiance and service were impeccable, making the entire experience unforgettable. If you’re looking for a place that honors Salvadoran cuisine in an elevated way, this is it! Highly recommended!

I’m happy I found this place in El Salvador! Not many gastronomy restaurants in the country and this one is a great one. Loved the food and the service was amazing.

Everything tasted so fresh and the flavor in every dish was incredible. Great cocktails too

This was definitely the best food experience I had in San Salvador. They had creative dishes with roots in the country’s culinary history. I loved that they explained every dish when it arrived. The cochinita blew me away, as just weeks ago I had a similar dish in Los Angeles for double the price and had a fraction of the taste. The ambiance of the space is cool and low key, and the service is on point, but as some people mentioned before; they MUST redo their music playlist. At times it’s a pleasant traditional Salvadorian folk song, but then you’re ripped into a loud grunge rock song. It really takes you out of the experience, and frankly it left me confused and annoyed. Other than that, a dinner at El Xolo is not to be missed. 🙌🏼

The absolute best food in El Salvador without a doubt. The food is highly innovative while using local ingredients and playing with the flavors and textures. Drinks are unique and different. The food hall is lively and aptly decorated while the kitchen is open and visible. I watched the head chef tinker and taste a new dish. The innovation while building on the local familiar ingredients is highly reminiscent of the Bogota star chef at El Chato. The total cost for all the dishes plus drinks was under 100pp. Restaurants on this level in NYC are literally 6-8 times as much. Return tickets to San Salvador are cheaper... ;)

Wow…one of the best dinner experiences we’ve ever had. The menu, the presentation, the atmosphere, and the service amazed us. El Xolo was a perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. They let us experience the culture, the heritage, and the taste of El Salvador. We tried the tasting menu paired with their specialty cocktails and every single item on the menu was delicious! The food and flavors were very unique. Our favorite ones were the Enchilada, El Perulero, and Santo Domingo De Guzman😋 We can’t wait to be back. Thank you so much Alfonso and Alex for making our anniversary so special 🌽❤️‍🔥

This restaurant was absolutely amazing and one of the top culinary experiences I've had traveling. Our waiter Alfonso, was attentive, helpful, and extremely thorough. He explained each dish we had and made recommendations to match our tastes. Even before arriving at the restaurant, I reached out to him via WhatsApp to plan something special for my girlfriend as it was her birthday turned surprise engagement dinner. Alfonso received the flowers I had delivered, and helped in my proposal. My girlfriend (now fiancee) was soo impressed with the presentation of the food, the drinks, and the ambiance. It was quiet, relaxing, and a perfect place to dine in San Salvador. I would recommend anyone visiting the city to come here. I don't write reviews often, but I had to remark about this place.

El Xolo takes on the challenge of mastering Salvadoran flavors and blending them to create dishes with a contemporary flair. The ambience of the restaurant is warm and inviting, a perfect balance of rustic charm and modern elegance. Having experienced both the tasting menu and ordering a la carte, I recommend ordering some of the following dishes a la carte: Tiradito Balam, Sopa de Gallina (chicken dumplings in a traditionally flavored Salvadoran chicken soup), Tartare de Res, and Pastelitos de Maíz. Definitely try a dessert, the Xolobanano took me back to my childhood. The menu is a delightful journey through Salvadoran cuisine, reimagined with innovative techniques and fresh, high-quality ingredients. The dishes are small but packed with flavor. Inform the restaurant of any allergies and they will accommodate. If you try any restaurant in San Salvador, it must be this one.

Our party of three Salvadorans and one Texan shared an evening of unforgettable gastronomy at El Xolo. We began with the crudo, moved into cochinita, enjoyed the chorizo, their pastelitos, and finished with the tamal de chocolate and the xolobanano. The meal was served with their corn tortillas and maza madre sourdough bread. Drinks were Negroni, Acqua Panna, a Suprema, refresco natural de arrayán, an old fashioned, their cuisnahuat. While it was all extraordinary, highlights for us was the crudo (a ceviche type of appetizer), the cochinita tacos (outstanding!), the pastelitos (need that recipe!), and the xolobanano (wow!) We left not a crumb or drop! The atmosphere and setting for a stormy Friday night was perfect, and the attentiveness by the staff was without a muss. Kudos to the bartender--the cuisnahuat was such a delight! Thank you, El Xolo.

This is a special place for me. I come once a year for my birthday. The experience is intimate, even when crowded. There is not only attention to detail, but a story that follows you with every meal. We’re invited to learn about it with your waiter as your guide. Alfonso, our waiter, was visually proud of the culinary work and of the story behind the food. Una experiencia espectacular.

The restaurant was organized and the design/layout was good. Enough space between tables, they have a communal table as well if you're into that or it's the only one available. We opted to have a chef's recommendation and it was great. Shared 3 starters and two warm dishes to end the night with the Tamal de Chocolate. It was all great - The Tamal had a different texture wasn't a big fan of. I think it's more of a personal liking, doesn't take away from the great taste of all the items brought. I wanted to do the tasting menu, but they mentioned it has to be reserved ahead of time can't do same day (bummer) Will definitely come back regardless. No photos - Go see for yourself.

As a native New Yorker, I’ve had the privilege of dining at various fine dining restaurants, both Michelin-starred and non-starred. Throughout my travels, I’ve had the opportunity to experience a diverse range of cuisines. However, I can confidently say that this particular dining experience stands out as one of the best I’ve ever had. The food exceeded my expectations in every way. The quality of ingredients was impeccable, and the attention to detail was great. The ambiance itself was elevated and cozy. The staff was attentive to every detail, ensuring that our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. The drinks were also expertly crafted, complementing the meal perfectly. If you’re seeking a truly memorable dining experience and appreciate the art of fine dining, I highly recommend visiting Xolo.

I visited this restaurant with family. We're from Canada for context. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the food and the service at this restaurant. I have never experienced so many new flavours at a restaurant in my entire life. Even simple dishes were exploding with flavour. Their attention to detail is astounding. My napkin had fallen off of my leg during dinner and I had no idea until one of the waiters came and gave me a new one. Our main server took time to genuinely think about which wine would be the best to pair with our mains - and he picked the perfect one. During our meal, our main server asked if he could share a book with us to look at that was about the native language from the area that only 3% of the population could speak. This made our experience all the more interesting. I strongly encourage anyone traveling to prioritize having an experience at this restaurant. It was one of the most memorable meals of my life. Thank you to all of the staff for such a wonderful experience and for taking such good care of us!

Amazing dishes, drinks, and excellent service. Each dish was so thoughtfully made to create a combination of exquisite flavors. Both the dishes and drinks were presented beautifully. Despite what other reviews said, the staff were very attentive and explained each dish with care. Portion sizes are small compared to the average restaurant in El Salvador, but the flavors make up for it. My partner and I ordered 2 appetizers and 2 mains and we were pretty satisfied but it may not be enough food for those used to large portions here.

We had an amazing experience at El Xolo from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully prepared, every dish was full of flavor and clearly made with a lot of care and attention to detail. You can really tell the quality of the ingredients and the thought behind each plate. Francisco was our server and his service was truly outstanding. He was incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, and he went above and beyond by giving us great recommendations and explaining how to eat the dishes in a way that really enhanced the experience. His guidance helped us appreciate the food even more and made the entire meal feel special and intentional. Between the incredible food and the exceptional service, this was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had. Highly recommend El Xolo to anyone visiting or living in El Salvador, we’ll definitely be back!

The restaurant was really good but the only down fall was our waiter. We would ask for stuff and they would forget to bring it. We had to constantly remind the waiter to bring us extra water and drinks but over all the atmosphere was great and The food was phenomenal I recommend trying this place for a date if your in El Salvador

Last night, I had the pleasure of dining at El Xolo, and what an unforgettable first experience it was. As someone trying fine dining in El Salvador for the first time, I was especially excited to see how traditional Salvadoran flavors could be elevated and reimagined—and El Xolo absolutely delivered. From the very first bite, I was blown away. We started with the Tiradito Balam, and it was to die for. The freshness of the fish paired perfectly with a creamy, citrus-forward sauce that was both elegant and bold. It set the tone for the evening beautifully. Next came their freshly baked masa madre bread with black garlic butter. The crunch of the bread and that deep, nostalgic flavor of the butter instantly took me back to my childhood—it reminded me of leche de burra candy. A beautiful touch that showed how memories and food can intertwine. The cerdito dish was another standout. It transported me straight to a Sunday evening in Salcoatitán , sitting in the town square enjoying yuca con chicharrón. The pork was crispy perfection, the arugula added freshness, and the kimchi twist brought a whole new dimension. It was Salvadoran soul food, redefined. And then—The Amarre cocktail. One of the best drinks I’ve ever had. I could have had a dozen! Balanced, bold, and dangerously delicious. We also had the Tartar de Res with a chorizo-infused hollandaise that was absolutely incredible. A rich, savory twist that elevated the dish beyond anything I expected. Dessert? Simply amazing. Every sweet bite felt like a perfect ending to a journey through a modern Salvadoran culinary story. Now, while the food was Michelin star-worthy, I will say that the service could use a little polish. Some small touches were missing—like more thoughtful menu explanations or suggestions—which could have made our evening truly perfect. But even with those details aside, the experience was phenomenal.

The food is great but service is subpar. I ordered the tasting menu days in advance and confirmed the day before only to arrive and be told that I wouldn’t be able to have the tasting menu because I hadn’t reserved it in advance. They apologized for the miscommunication and I ordered from the regular menu. Cocktails were great but took too long as I was the only person in the entire restaurant. Standout dishes were the sopa de gallina India and the sausage dish (which they’re known for). The restaurant has a lot of potential but needs to polish it up for their price point.

Ambience is very nice and the staff is very friendly and attentive. The food here is really the fun part. Each dish has the ingredients on the menu, but to see how the chef puts it all together and the way the flavors balance out. For example, the dark green (black looking) circles in the dish is an oil made out of avocado skin. The drinks are also very intricate—even the mocktails lie the one in the picture. The restaurant is on the pricey end of the spectrum but it is definitely worth it.

Went for a tasting menu experience. $129 per person isn’t too bad. Food was creative and full of flavor.

Great food, incredible tastes in small dishes. Specially the chicken soup and the pastelito. The place and location is incredible, but the music felt out of place. The service amazing and try the desserts, unique experiences

Had a very long multi-course dinner here in our first night in town. They worked hard to make it special but the food was just a touch off, so 4 stars.

Logistics: — We had sent the restaurant a message on Saturday requesting a table for two people on Tuesday evening, but never heard back. So we asked our hotel to make a reservation, which they were able to do the same day. As a result, we weren’t able to enjoy the full tasting menu. Food & Drinks: — Alfonso and his colleagues at the restaurant put together an excellent ad hoc tasting menu. All the food was very delicious and quite unique and original. The traditional cocktails were also excellent. Dessert was also fantastic. We enjoyed both a banana centric dish with ice cream as well as a strawberry dessert. Service: — El Xolo’s service is probably its weakest area. The service was friendly and the staff’s enthusiasm for their work shone brightly. But after the bottle of Sanpellegrino was on the table, no one refilled our glasses or offered more water when we finished the bottle. Likewise, we had to ask for additional cocktails after we finished the first round. There was also a sizable gap between both the second-to-last dinner course and the last dinner course as well as the last course and dessert. (Not unusual to have an intentional delay prior to dessert to allow ample time for digestion, but I don’t think this gap was attributable to this rationale). Decor: — Very well designed featuring low ambient lighting. Some dishes are custom clay, which is an especially nice touch. Overall: — The best dinner we had in our four days in San Salvador. Highly recommended for a fun and creative dinner, with the understanding that the service will be friendly but not as attentive as one may be accustomed to.

We had the “folk” tasting menu because we only were able to get a reservation at 6 and that was what was on offer. The tasting menu had 10+ courses very well prepared and presented; wait staff explained every course and were very attentive. The 10 courses took almost 3.5 hours and was a great tour of local fare.

Mayan unique flavors. Although we are disappointed to see nothing, other than dessert, with cacao or coffee incorporated - which are main Salvadoran products. The butter with bread was tasty. The waitress took away our dessert without asking. We ordered various selections as this was suggested. Waited 8 months to try this place. Was a bit disappointed. They didn’t have some ingredients to make the drink or entree we ordered. Ingredients common to the country. I’m a vegetarian and was looking forward to the guisquil and they had no chayote to make it. My choices were limited. I contacted the business on WhatsApp and was apologized to. I’m not saying not to try it. Perhaps you’ll love it. We were not that impressed though. Several different people waited on us. A 20% gratuity is automatic. And we don’t feel the service warranted that. We always tip 20+% when going out. But to automatically put that on the bill leaves a bad taste. Especially since our dessert was pulled away without asking. Again …. Try it. Perhaps you’ll love it. This is just our experience. Update : Dec 2025. We gave it another go here. It wasn’t anything special. Tried their version of quiskil. It’s cold and like stringy. I didn’t care for it. We prob won’t return. But the atmosphere is nice. I do think you should try it.

The food was very good but overpriced for what we recieved. We had pork that was good but very small serving and then a dessert that was not very filling. I left hungry and we paid almost $65 per person. I would not recommend going back again there were much better and economical choices. It maybe different during the day if you can go to the museum but that was not an option for us.

G

We had the tasting menu — not listed, but you can ask for it. And hey, who doesn’t like surprises, right? So we went for it. The courses were well-balanced and absolutely Michelin star worthy. The bottle of wine was excellent. The service was too much of a unbelievable “show”. One of the cooks asked me how I liked the dish that I stll had to receive. Awkward. But then came the bill. Excuse me? A 20% tip automatically added — while everywhere else in El Salvador we went to charged 10%. I didn’t want to spoil the evening, so I paid and left quietly and we won’t be going back.

Yes, it´s trendy. A bit Pretentious. Nice athmosphere and kind of interesting crowd. But I´ll say just one thing to summarize: "The Emperor's New Clothes".

N
Nathan Wood

Heavily overpriced for what it is. In terms of prices it should be at least a 1/3 cheaper for what it is. Coming from London, you can get way better for the same price in London - which is crazy. The food was good but not wow. I was disappointed by one of their plates and the dessert. The wine menu is a bit of a mess. It should be clearer. The staff were nice and it was nice to have the plates described but the attention and service was just not one that I would have expected from a top restaurant. The timing of the plates didn't seem to make sense - like serving bread + butter with the last plate instead of at the start. Bit of a shame.

The chef has some great ideas but lacking in execution. I got there around 8:45pm w/o a reservation, and was quickly seated. The ceviche was a great start, but unfortunately it went south after that. The mushroom was a bit heavy to my taste, and there's sand in it so that I had to spit out my second bite. After flagging this to the chef, they took it away, but still billed me for it. I also ordered the $5 bread and butter since the beef entree I wanted is sold out. This was not served until 25 minutes later after both of the appetizers. I like sourdough but I think this one is over fermented and a bit too sour. The sourness covered up whatever flavor they added to the butter. The bread also lacks a proper crust. The Amor Amor is fun, but not sure if the marshmallow is helping in there. It could use a crunchy element. The chocolate tamale is a cool idea but just a blob of bland corncake. I wish there's some sort of filling inside. I would not come back but it is a cool place in the city where the food scene is lacking.

raghav batra

The overall experience was fairly average when it came to the food — nothing particularly memorable in terms of taste. What really stood out, unfortunately, was the service. Our main course order was clearly forgotten, and we ended up waiting nearly 1.5 hours before our food finally arrived, which was quite disappointing. On the positive side, the cocktails were genuinely great and the ambience was lovely, making it a nice place to sit and have drinks. However, beyond the drinks and the setting, the experience didn’t offer much that was out of the ordinary, and the service delay really took away from the meal.

I recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at this restaurant that left me thoroughly disappointed. Our reservation was unexpectedly canceled just two hours prior to our planned visit. Frustrated, we decided to reschedule for the following day. However, upon our arrival, there was no mention of the previous cancellation. I was disappointed by the lack of flavors in the dishes. Out of the four vegetarian dishes, two were mushroom-based, one used a common squash, and the last one featured eggplant. Unfortunately, the eggplant dish had no flavor at all. Only one of the mushroom dishes had some taste, while the others were underwhelming. The rushed service made us doubt the level of care given to each dish, ultimately impacting our overall dining experience. Surprisingly, we were in and out of the restaurant in just 20 minutes. In conclusion, I regret to say that I cannot recommend this restaurant based on my underwhelming visit. The lack of attention to detail, limited vegetarian options, and subpar service all contributed to a dining experience that failed to meet even the most basic expectation.

Booked a reservation for friends’s birthday. Restaurant is touted as one of the best in Latin America. Shocked at the bad experience from service to food. Wait staff was inattentive. Ordered the shrimp risotto and the shrimp was inedible. Meal was ridiculously priced for the service/food. Wine was the best part of the meal. I was embarrassed to have made the reservation. Do not recommend.

Disappointing at best. Several of the drinks we intended to order were unavailable. Music was extremely loud making it impossible to hear people at our own table. When asked to lower the volume, the waiter said that “the chef wanted it like that”. As for food, it did not feel worth the high prices except for the Gallina India soup. All of this topped with terrible service. We had been there for 45 min before telling us kitchen was closing soon. We ordered several dishes that never came to the table, had to ask for them 3 times for the waiter to finally say they didn’t have it. We also requested to have additional cutelery and plates which waiter was reluctant to provide. Finally, we tried to pay with 4 different foreign credit cards (even Revolut) and none were accepted. Will definitely not be coming back.
