Service was great and I'm a big fan of their window seating. The bar itself is very small, but I bet this would be a great place to bring a date. Not too expensive, but somewhat classy. I did not order their food, but I saw a couple dishes and it looked/smelled amazing, so would definitely be interested in coming back to try.
Absolutely delicious. Tried their four course tasting menu with wine pairing. The seafood paella was incredible. Huge portion with lots of shrimp, clams, and a large prawn. Bursting with flavor. My friend had the tuna poke as an appetizer and the tuna was perfectly seasoned with what I believe was a teriyaki based sauce. The wine pairings were also excellent with great selections of both white and red wine from various regions across the US and Europe.
Went there for the desserts but ended up having the 3 course menu. The brownie fudge was well done and served just right tho could use more textures. Tres leches was nicely done but very fruit forward
They recently opened and the place is very nice! The owner is a Portuguese guy and the food are very tasty! The only downside is the food price is very expensive in compare to portion size and quality! But if you just want to try tasty food and the price is not important here is your place.
This place is a hidden gem serving up tasty cocktails and Michelin-quality food. The atmosphere is smart and trendy and the service is excellent.
Celebrated a family members Birthday party here. They did an extraordinary job and we all had fun.
Great revamp of an already awesome bar!
Incredibly personalized service and experience. Food was delectable. I loved it.
Slate is a true gem in a wonderful neighborhood. Besides the incredibly welcoming atmosphere, the food is stellar and wine flows freely. Be sure to try the scallops or the lamb chops!
Highly recommend this place- had a private work group there. Service great, Chef was great, Food was great and so was wine and beer. Low key, not stuffy but high end food
Both the wine selection and customer service we're nothing short of fantastic, excited to come back and try the paella!
This place is DELICIOUS!! And the staff was very attentive and welcoming. And A+ for the covid safety measures. Highly recommend
Felt like I was back in Spain. Amazing authentic food, wonderful atmosphere. We'll be back
I would give more than 5 stars if I could. The establishment is amazing and service top notch. Gabby was our server (highly recommended as server). She is so knowledgeable and charismatic. Very professional throughout the service. Following that, we had Nicole serving us our food. She was on point with food information and description as well as the wine pairing. Sophie came by as well to check on us and provide us with more wine highlights. Overall, an it was an amazing experience. I appreciate their hard work and knowledge so please always be kind to your servers. Their time and knowledge matters. Will definitely be back, amazing sport and 100% recommend to wine lovers and people 21+ years.
Stopped in for a glass of wine before dinner. We ended up having a wine flight and cocktail. The bar is absolutely lovely and the staff are all friendly. We were given some really tasty complimentary nibbles which were perfect. We were given a tour of the restaurant and cant wait to come back and do a tasting menu. Very nice and well worth trying.
My husband and I attended a wine tasting on 5/12/2016. We were 45 minutes past our reservation because of traffic, but we had no problems getting a table. The food was well presented, tasted really good, and was the perfect quantity. I could not taste all five of the wines because the tasting volume was too generous for my tolerance. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Amazing tasting menu experience! We tried the Saffron Tour and every single dish was fantastic and so well paired with the drinks. Cocktails were delicious, very attentive service and just a wonderful experience overall. Highly recommend!
We were 6 to enjoy the place. High quality food and astonishing association .. try the paella .. quite innovative tastes. Good list of affordable wines .. and some more expansives. From outside you would not anticipate such an amazing place. Good service with cool waiters. Prices are around 10 - 18 for starter and 20 - 30 for main plates. Excellent option.
Excellent service and food! We hosted a small cocktail party here and it was an ideal venue. Danny and his team made the experience hassle free. Highly recommend the duck egg rolls, crab cakes, petite filets and the shrimp!! We will definitely be coming back!!
Recently visited with some friends and had a delightful experience. The weather was nice so we sat in front of the bay window and from the moment we walked in we were welcomed by numerous staff members. Never once did we need for anything - someone was constantly checking on us to ensure we were satisfied. Food was quite good and well proportioned. Great menu options and a nice wine selection made for a great night. Highly recommend the duck egg rolls and foie gra French toast. Great place and I will definitely be back!
I've been here several times and I must say that every time I go, I love it even more. Paella is a must and the duck egg rolls are so delicious! I just can't get enough of them! Pairings of wine makes every meal even better. A must try when in Cleveland Park.
I have been to Slate three times now and love the place. The staff is really friendly and offers great advice on food/wine pairing. The menu is unique and offers tasty small plates, seafood and even a mean cheeseburger. The wine list is excellent and the staff is always ready to recommend a new bottle. The owner is hands-on and open to suggestions. There are a ton of neighborhood places in Washington, DC but Slate is a perfect place to grab a bar stool, sip a great Pinot Noir and eat some memorable food. Five stars!
I typically do wine reviews but after going to Slate last night, I felt compelled to write a review of my experience. Slate, in a nutshell, represents everything I am looking for in a wine bar. We were greeted by the owner when we arrived and were seated immediately. The atmosphere is surprisingly open for a smaller establishment and the decor is simple and tasteful. The wine list and menu are both presented very nicely and compliment each other well. For a starter, we shared the Ahi Tuna. It was delicious. It was mixed with avocado and homemade wonton chips. I had the shrimp paella (make sure to ask them to describe how they prepare the rice) and a generous pour of Temperamento. I had not had Temperamento before but was surprised at how well it paired with the dish. The paella was amazing and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. I did not order dessert but had the opportunity to try the Mistela Moscatell. Wow. Just imagine a late harvest fruit bomb with a Viognier (citrus) finish. I highly-recommend people stop in and experience the amazing food and customer service.
I love Slate! It's a great spot in Glover that provides an intimate dining experience. Not to mention, the staff is so welcoming. They encourage feedback and exude passion about every dish. It's always great to drop by this hidden treasure.
Great spot for happy hour, late happy hour and snacks, dinner, late drinks... it's a fun, inviting spot with an excellent selection of wine and delicious apps and meals alike. Been there a bunch of times. Danny always takes great care of us.
This place is amazing! Incredibly tasting food, some classics and some with interesting twists. Sophisticated ambiance with top-notch friendly service. Will definitely be going back and I absolutely recommend it!
Top notch service and great dining environment. Cannot say that about the good though. Our pork shoulder was very salty… the pairing source was delicious though.
Great start to the evening, grab some wine and a beautiful starter. Would love see some more tapas available at the bar. Head up stairs to Xiquet for some tasty paella and top notch service
Food and wine was amazing. Service went south when it was time to settle the bill. It took an hour to get bills and payments through. None of the delay was on our end...
Company Christmas party was held here. Was a skosh small for our party, but the staff put in a game effort to serve us. Decent drinks and good food
Great food. Hip feel. Wonderful wines. Fancy tastes in a simple plate.
Great place for lunch. Very quiet when we went there on a Monday. Liked their window seating and vintage decors.
The photos are kind of deceiving but the place is kind of cute, although I was a bit cold inside. They could increase the heat a bit. This would make you also drink more! :) We were there for happy hour and the wine portions were really good. I was also amazed by the quality of the drinks offered. The ladies working there were polite and attentive. Thursday is all night happy hour and I would really suggest that day for visiting this bar.
A group of us went for restaurant week and overall I really liked the experience. The food was delicious and well paired with their wine selection. The servers were friendly and attentive. We had a slight issue during desert where the final wine was not served until I asked about it, but overall I think it's a great little spot in Georgetown and worth a visit.
Service was great, beer/wine was great, food was overall good with minor issues. It can be a bit pricey, but overall nice neighborhood addition. Mid June 2014 Update: We went there again recently. It was not that crowded. The service was good. The red wine was surprisingly a bit chilled. The beer selection was not that great with no bottles listed and just ok drafts. However, the food was quite good tonight. The eggplant parm and risotto dishes were delicious. Overall, I'd say Slate is alright, but nothing too special. For wine flights, they should have paper to place the glasses on telling you about the wines instead of just telling you verbally.
Slate is in our neighborhood. The restaurant has a small bar area at the front, and then lots of tables in the back, including an upstairs area. They have a nice selection of wines by the glass. They have decent happy hour deals, and the food is pretty good.. The salty roasted peppers. The different waiters/bartenders vary widely in their ability to provide good service.
The half off bottles deal on Wednesdays is an exceptional deal. I love how the place opens its front windows on nice days. I enjoy coming here with friends and exploring some new, delicious wines. Restaurant ambiance is pretty cool, too.
Great place for brunch. Food was wonderful and our waiter never let our mimosas glass get empty. That made 8 boozy ladies very happy! It's definitely worth the trip.
Slate is no Xiquet. Same chef but different experience for us. We loved Xiquet. Slate — not so much. The octopus was tough. The wagyu was just okay. And the cheesecake wasn’t good at all. Our server was just okay, too. The whole evening felt like a flop. Maybe it was just one of those times where they just couldn’t hit the mark; but, that they generally offer a great dining experience. It was a two-star experience. The third star is there because Xiquet does carry some weight. And I’d like to give the chef the benefit of the doubt. I’ll give Slate some time and try them again.
Just good! I had higher expectations before the inauguration and after my first visit I don't find any reason to come back. Nothing stand out and nothing is out of ordinary, just another average place in glover park
Slightly pretentious but the wine is good. A great place to get a drink after work if you don't feel like going home yet.
Just OK and not worth the trek unless you live in Glover Park. The space is indeed super awkward and drafty on a wintry day. It is decorated on a shoestring without much taste or thought. The wine selection is OK but surprising small by the glass for a place with wine in its name. The champagne was not cold enough and the red wines were too warm. Food is OK but not memorable. Steak that was ordered medium rare arrived rare. Service was eager but amateurish (training situation but not even sure who was trained by whom). Won’t go back.
Have tried Slate a couple of times and have found the menu a bit uninspiring. Was looking forward to trying either the paella or the rosejat but the 30+ minute cook-time and movie tickets meant I didn't have enough time (not Slate's fault, of course). Wait staff is attentive and wine list has good variety.
Disappointed. We were excited to try Slate Wine Bar but my husband and I both left with the same thought... 'How is this place still open.' We did the 3 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. The food was below average for the price point and the wine pairing was unremarkable / not worth finishing in one case and tables around us were complaining. The service was weird and not what you would expect in this price point, among other things, for every course they served our food first then poured the wine making us awkwardly wait for the wine explanation before we could start eating... We spent $250.00 on this meal and my husband said "there's a burger place next door" as we were paying the bill 😂 Warning for a two top they auto charged 22% gratuity on our total bill that was almost 50% alcohol. 🙄 The plating was pretty though.
The view from the front was great but the wines were ok and they were overpriced by a lot! Example: Duckhorn Merlot, a glass was $20. Here is an idea, go across the street to whole foods, buy a different vintage of Duckhorn and it will run you between $20 and $30. Also, my finance asked for a buttery Chardonnay. She got an acidic Chardonnay. They servers do not know the wine on the menu. I had high hopes :( Honestly, if the wine was half the price, I would probably go back.
The wine selection is good. They added a gratuity for a bar tab and did not tell me. Smells a bit like spoiled wine.
There was a very strong smell of cleaning products when we walked in. We waited 30-40 minutes for our appetizer. A table that was there way before us got their food even later than we did. We were given one wrong entree. We had ordered off the brunch "prix fixe" menu, but were charged as if we had ordered everything separately which made it $25 per person rather than $18. The place was virtually empty, just us and another table, which seems odd for a weekend. We were very excited to try this place but it was a huge let down.
Excellent service and kind waiters. The pricing however is a bit off. I ordered a $75 bottle of wine, paella and 3 cheeses. Somehow this total (including a 20% gratuity) added up to $330. It was a date night so I didn’t particularly care to argue at the time. Slate also appears to not have any contact information. So a review seems most appropriate. There needs to be more clear cut and direct charges. I have never had a $100 paella in my life. But Slate appears to be the place offering up this treat.
I came here for brunch a couple weeks ago and haven’t gotten over how underwhelming the food was. The person with me got a fruit salad appetizer and it was almost as if it was out a can. Both our entrees had poached eggs and the eggs were fully boiled. That is unacceptable. Finally the churro we ordered for dessert was tiny and tasted as if it was cooked in burnt oil. It was the worst churro I’ve ever had. Additionally the price for all this food was completely overpriced for the quality. Only redeeming qualities were the bottomless drink specials and service.
Horrible - refused to refund the $40 deposit associated with our reservation even though we explained on the phone, as well as via email, that both members of the party tested positive for COVID-19. Received horrible service on the phone and was dismissed quickly via email. Cannot believe this restaurant would rather contribute to the spread of COVID at the risk of its community rather than refund $40 for service that was never provided. Was excited to dine here but thoroughly disappointed by all this especially during unprecedented times.
