We had breakfast here. The food was excellent. Clean, well presented, and good portions. Our sever Felipe was great! Very good humor and took care of every aspect of our dining experience. Highly recommended.
I enjoy eating at Mel's! Staff is always amazing, FOOD is always hot, fresh and delicious! When my husband is in the hospital across the street, I always go to Mel's for my food. Mmmmm, the tomatoe soup and grilled cheese is excellent and my other favorite is the short rib nachos. Everything is good but those 2 items I get everytime when im out there. The fresh vegetables that came with my steak dinner was sooooooo good. The steak and vegetables were Cooked to perfection 👌🏻And dont forget about dessert. There chocolate cake was very moist and so yummy! If you have not been there, your missing out!
Great breakfast. Great service. Nice to go to an old establishment and get a real breakfast. My new go to when I am at the Holiday Inn up the street. Home made corned beef has was really good.
Stopped by this spot for breakfast and had a good experience. The place has a really nice vibe and the ambiance is great. The staff was friendly and polite, which made the visit even better. The food was tasty — nothing over the top, but well prepared and it definitely hit the spot. Overall, it was a positive experience and a solid choice if you’re looking for a nice breakfast in the area. (Little bit expensive)
The best corned beef hash I have had to date. But to be honest I have only been to 4 or 5 spots that didn't just open a can and say presto corned beef. With that said its the best on a short list but dang it was sooooo good. My o ly real.grip is portion size and thats just me. 6/5 on flavor. The waiter was good and the place was nice and cozy on the inside. The location across the street from the hospital is a definite plus.
I stopped by Mel’s Diner on Van Ness this morning for breakfast, and it was a great experience overall. If you’re looking for that classic old-school diner feel, this is the place to go. From the vintage decor to the friendly service, Mel’s delivers a nostalgic yet solid breakfast experience that hits the spot. I ordered an omelet with home fries and toast, and it did not disappoint. The omelet was fluffy and packed with flavor, the potatoes were crispy yet tender, and the toast was served warm with butter – the perfect comforting breakfast. The portions were decent-sized, enough to leave me full but not overly stuffed. Mel’s isn’t the cheapest breakfast option in SF, but given the portion sizes and the fact that it’s a classic, well-known diner, I’d say it’s worth the splurge every now and then. You’re paying for a mix of quality, nostalgia, and convenience, and I was happy with my meal. What I love about Mel’s is the retro diner ambiance – it really transports you back in time with its old-school decor, jukebox vibes, and cozy booths. Service was friendly and quick, making for a relaxed and enjoyable breakfast experience. If you’re craving a classic diner breakfast with generous portions and a nostalgic feel, Mel’s on Van Ness is a solid choice. It’s a little on the pricey side, but for the quality and experience, I’d definitely come back.
The food was okay but nothing special. When we got in there that day, there was a smell of a burnt pan or something stinking up the restaurant. We ate there anyway. Cause it gets pretty good ratings. The patty met was just a hamburger patty on rye bread and didn't fill the bun like a paddy melt should. The taste was good, though, just kinda thick butter. Nice cold beers, though. And the prices were as good as any place else around there.
AMBIENCE: Haven't been to a Mel's in awhile so I thought this place was something different lol This location is decorated nicely like a retro diner with a darker/warmer kind of vibe. FOOD: Food came out pretty quick. Got spaghetti & it wasn't too bad, good portion size & the meatballs tasted really good. My mom got the fish & chips & that was a no for her. It was obvious that they were frozen & not fresh. The vanilla milkshake was my favorite part! OVERALL: Chose this place because it's attached to the hotel I stayed at & it had a door directly leading to the hotel lobby. An okay option if you're in the area & don't feel heading out at night or ordering food off an app.
When visiting San Francisco this seems to be a staple of this area. I tried the tuna melt it was good. My parents tried the creole fried chicken sandwich they said it was ok. They also offer breakfast all day which I ordered on another day. I got the Denver omelette with peppers and cheese hash browns and sourdough toast. I also try the famous Mel's burger it was good. So as you can see they have several options try it out for yourself.
Overpriced for the quality. Seems they have issues with organization even when not too busy; food temperature was too low for both orders had to ask for them to be warned up, toast wasn't toasted. Staff was dismissive and wasn't on top off coffee. I'd recommend skipping this place for breakfast, there are better spots in the area. Edit: changed to 4 stars, they comped one of our meals.
Convenient location and solid breakfast place. There are not many breakfast options in the area, so this is a good choice. Everything was well prepared and service is friendly and efficient. This is a former Mel's Diner, still under same crew but remodeled and rebranded to fit he new owners concept to include a full bar. The interior is somewhat bland and boring by San Francisco standards.
We were staying over from a cruise from the Port of San Francisco and decided to go to Mel's Diner for brunch. The food was very good. My friend had French toast and I had grilled cheese sandwich with tomato bisque. I asked for a refill for iced tea but the waiter said I couldn't get another refill without having to pay the $6 full price (nothing was noted on the menu). Wow, I thought to myself, how cheap can you be? Iced tea is very inexpensive, and $6 a lot higher than the cost. That's why I rated the service so low. I guess the impression of being cheap is better than a happy customer. My visit was a late Sunday morning and the restaurant had plenty of seats.
The food was ok. Except eggs, toast, potatoes, bacon, coffee was $27!! However, the place smells awful. It says that it was established in 1947. It seems like it was renovated last around that time. Like an old carpet in a moldy hotel. Except there is no carpet. So, I am baffled what can it be.
I had to go in and sit down. I waited for more than 18 minutes and nobody came to offer me service. Terrible service, and the customers there don't matter; the staff's conversation is more important than customer service. I can't comment on the food because I wasn't served. Wow, if you don't want to have a bad experience, don't go there.
I arrived to Mel’s kitchen with friends. It took the server Alex forever to come to our table to greet us and to take our order. We finally ordered. We ended up waiting a while for the first entree. In which the food came out late. I observed Alex moving the food from one side of the window to the other side. He acknowledged me watching him move the food and still let the food sit in the window getting cold. Apparently, the crew was more occupied with celebrating an employee birthday than making sure my friends and I got our food. For that matter, not making sure my friend who just had a kidney transplant, got his food prepared properly. Afterwards,we observed the cooking crew laughing as if all of this was funny. I don’t know if the server and the crew didn’t care to give us good service because we were obviously gay. For whatever reason it was not called for them to treat us in a rude manner!! I was very upset!!
I ordered the steak and eggs. The waiter at the beginning was nice. He smiled as he gave me options. Thing is, I never saw him again after that. I received a cold, overcooked steak. Not medium like I ordered. But there was literally no one there to rectify. I had to look for someone to get the bill. The staff were huddled in the corner speaking Spanish among themselves. The eggs weren’t bad bad the potatoes were chewy and undercooked. I don’t expect much from this awful city in decline, but this was one of the worst meals I’ve had during my trip. Do not recommend.
I came into have a drink since I stayed at the Marriott connected to it. Well right as I walked in and sat at the bar, I was told they weren’t going to serve any food since a group of 40 walked in. There were total of 3 servers that night and like 6 of us on the bar top. Well I told them I was only there for a drink, well 40 minutes went by and nobody stopped to get my drink order, I was sitting there since I had a buddy down there drinking water and waiting to put his drink order in. So we just talked, about 1 hour 15 minutes go by someone asked me what I wanted. I said I’ll get a water to start off with and then an espresso martini. Well, 30 minutes go by the server comes back and said they weren’t allowed to make an espresso martini, didn’t even give me a reason. So I started to take pictures of the bar area to show they had the ingredients to make it, then 10 minutes later another guy walks up and says they can make it now. Well he made it so clear it tasted horrible. I told him it’s fine but he insisted he make it right, well let’s just say the remade version was way worse than the first. Worst espresso martini ever and I never got my water. This place is a joke and I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go there.
