Excellent Eatery. Poor or Race based Service. Example all the other tables were served Chinese Tea. We asked for some too. The Bearer just ignored us. Finally our Host told the Bearer we Will Pay for the tea. The same happened when we asked for a little green onion to go with the Sea Food Egg Noodle we ordered. Yet our Host left a Generous Tip for the Bearer as she was a good Indian American.
Tasty food, good portion and price. Small place and gets filled up fast. We come here for good food not atmosphere or decoration. We all enjoy and have a good time.
Food is delicious - most things in life that are good require patience. For those complaining about the wait, go next door and get a massage. Wonderful place too. Nice small family owned restaurant.
Good Cantonese food. Small restaurant, may be a long wait unless you get there early.
Who would have thought that a little hole in the wall in a ‘boring’ suburbia strip mall that’s been in biz for about 20 years would turn into an ‘it’ restaurant ?!? Go early … ie when they open or else you’ll be waiting in a boring parking lot. They’ll even stop taking take out orders if they’re overloaded
My husband and I came here occasionally today and were both surprised by their food quality— they are amazing and super good! After I moved from NJ to CA, this is the first Chinese restaurant that has been shocked me by its taste! We ordered three regular dishes to see how good they were—House Hainan chicken lunch plate, black bean spare ribs and beef chow fun. The house hainan chicken tastes super fresh and juicy! The black bean spare ribs is amazing and absolutely delicious- ribs are tender and the rice is scrumptious ! Their amount is quite huge and we were full after two dishes. The beef chow fun was taken to home and it’s also very good! The staffs are very friendly and nice. Tea is free. And the price is reasonable($20-30/person ) For those who want to try authentic Cantonese cuisine, it’s the best one and I highly recommended it! Definitely i will come back to try again!
4.5/5 - would definitely come back again to try their other dishes. The food here is served super fresh and fast (except for the clay pot, which needs 30 minutes) We ordered 4 things and the waiter cautioned us that they have big portions - they weren’t wrong! The last photo shows how much food we took home and the leftover lasted us 2 more meals. Overall the food is delicious, I would recommend getting their clay pot rice. We got the small one with chicken and shiitake mushroom - it was super flavourful and chicken was very tender. The Singapore style rice noodle is also pretty tasty. The fujian style egg tofu with broccoli came loaded with so much things in the sauce on top that we couldn’t see the broccoli. The sauce is flavourful to dip the tofu in but the tofu. -0.5 because the beef was mostly batter and there wasn’t much meat
Short hours, closed between lunch and dinner. Very small restaurant with limited seating and hours. Few parking spots as the spots are in a shared strip mall. But the food is well worth the effort to get a table. The menu comprises of old fashion food from the surrounding villages in Canton, the majority of immigrants from China from before the exclusion act ... the railroad workers! Delicious food that is difficult to find in restaurants nowadays. Especially bittermelon that seemed to be everywhere in San Francisco Chinatown eateries, according to parents, back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The clay pot salted fish and minced pork was the other highlight for lunch. We saw the line out front before the restaurant opened, and that was a great indicator for what to anticipate.
Probably the best Cantonese style dishes you can get here on the peninsula. Really enjoyed their tasty chicken mushroom crispy clay pot rice and fresh sauteed garlic green beans and mustard greens. All had big portions enough for 3-4 easily. Got takeout but the service was still very friendly and it was ready 30 min after I called it in. Not much of an ambience but the food is the most important right? Can't wait to try some other dishes. My go-to favorite Chinese spot to fix my cravings!
Blue Sky Cafe (BSC) is an authentic Cantonese restaurant at its best. It is in an worn-down strip mall, barely a sign. As a matter of fact, I've lived in San Carlos 6 years and never noticed this spot. Commensurate to the exterior, the interior is bare bones. There are tables and chairs. Just basic utensils. In many ways, it feels a bit sketchy as well. The servers barely speak English and you hear the cacophony of Cantonese from the busy kitchen while the entire restaurant is jam packed with a mountain of pick up delivery meals waiting on the side. Everything is forgiven and then some when the food arrives. Eating at BSC is somewhat like walking in a field of treasure or an Easter egg hunt. The menu does not describe anything, and I'm sure there's some Chinese name for it, so you sort of take a "bet" ordering. But guess what. Whatever you order, will be phenomenal. This is by far one of the best Cantonese comfort food in the Bay Area. There is nothing more to say here. The food is authentic and amazing. And when the food arrives, you sort of feel what else should or could I hve ordered. It is clear that there is more love than one can imagine imbued into every dish that comes out, hot and fresh, from the kitchen. And one can also tell that they are hitting the limits of scale preserving the quality and taste while keep prices super low. I truly commend the owner for keeping BSC the way it is, not worrying about niceties or garnish and staying focused on putting a spoonful of delight in every bite.
My to go place for eel claypot rice and salt and pepper porkchop, and spicy string bean with minced pork. . I have been coming this restaurant for many years. It is a very busy reataurants. I can accommodate large group as they have 2 big round table. As the owner recognizes us, everytime we stop by , he know we want to have ell claypot rice. My other favorite dish is chicken salad. It is boiled chicken mix with wasabi oil and sprinkle with sesame seed and fried wonton. The eel claypot has chinese sausage and I think it is fresh water eel. I like the bottom of the claypot which the rice become harden and crispy. Salt and pepper porkchop is cooked perfectly. Sometimes it is a bit salty but overall it is good. String bean spicy is just a kick which is good. Sometimes they have grass jelly (Kuai Leng kou) for sell and house chilli. One of the reason the restaurant is famous beside the taste of the dishes, I think is the price. The price is reasonable.
Their food is so good and the prices are good too. I have no idea why they have better food than a lot of places in Cupertino and Milpitas where I'd expect more Cantonese restaurants. It's very odd that they're located in a small shopping strip in Belmont when they're this good. It's actually worth a drive if you're in the South Bay or somewhere else just to get the clay pot rice.
We love eating here as the service is really great and there are two large round tables. Surprisingly, it doesn't get overly loud inside even when all the tables are full, so you can actually have a conversation. Eating here is a great way to feed a lot of people as the dishes are generously sized. Favorites are all the porridges, house special pan fried noodle, fish fillet with green (usually zucchini), peking spareribs, and string bean with chicken. The family that runs this restaurant is really, really nice too! Tip: We love getting takeout from here but you need to plan ahead. The restaurant is really popular during prime time meal hours so if we order too close to 6pm we've had to wait 30-45min past our quoted time for food.
Blue Sky Café is a truly exceptional Cantonese spot that delivers authentic, high-quality dishes in a comforting, family-style setting; the service is warm, friendly and efficient, ensuring a pleasant dining experience even during peak hours when the simple dining room is bustling. The food is the real star, featuring generous portions of expertly prepared specialties like the beautifully Steamed Pompano with Black Bean Sauce, which was succulent and perfectly seasoned and the flavorful, crispy-bottomed Clay Pot Rice, which is a must-try classic they are known for. We thoroughly enjoyed the perfectly cooked Ginger Scallion Chicken and the delicious mix of textures and flavors in the other dishes, including the Stir-fried Beef and Chinese Broccoli and the savory Braised Tofu with Mushrooms and Greens, proving this is a go-to spot for satisfying and traditional Cantonese cuisine.
It's a small cozy shop that serves Excellent and tasty Hong Kong dishes, especially Clay pot rice. Very authentic and tasty 👍🏼. Great milk tea and zero concern for peanut allergy 🤩 Highly recommend 😋. Service team was excellent, thanks 🙏🏼. And it's wonderful eating such good food with background music of smooth Jazz, which matches the super chilled and non-rushed dining experience , matching the name of the shop and likely philosophy of the owner 😎
Great place for Cantonese food. Owner is friendly but please be aware that they will not take more takeout orders when they are already filled with too many. I appreciate the owner’s authenticity in keeping the quality of everyone’s orders to his standards. Clay pot rice is cooked to order so please be patient and let them do their thing! Chicken is high quality and has the signature “red inside the bone” that Cantonese master chefs pride themselves over so please don’t be freaked out by that. The chicken is cooked, just very gently! Come early if you don’t want to wait bc the restaurant size is small.
Always good flavors here, and generous portion sizes. Claypot rice with charred rice bottom is great, and hard to find elsewhere. Just be aware that whenever tech companies are not serving employees food, this place will be crowded with a 30-45+ min wait (Fri, Sat, Sun dinner, and holidays). Great value, and that's why people come back again and again! See dishes + menu photos.
Very small place but delivers good food. Service is typical of a small and fast Chinese place. Can be slow at times and servers moving quickly to deliver plates and tend to takeout orders. Luckily, they do take reservations for parties of 5 or more. If you come during peak hours, there will be a wait (I wouldn't necessarily wait for a table here - maybe max 20 minutes)? It is in a small plaza but the parking lot spaces are somewhat tight. There was a QR code on the table for the menu as well, which was nice. You can also order takeout, but there was almost an hour wait for that as well. I believe they may have stopped taking take out orders too at one point in the evening around 7:30-8pm on a Saturday. All the food was good. Not the absolute best in the Bay/other Chinese places, but they do have generous portions for the price you pay. I didn't take a picture of the clay pot rice, but a medium could be shared among at least 4-5 people with leftovers. Beef stew was tasty and soft - what you'd like and expect in a good beef noodle soup. Fried pork chops were fried well and crispy, and a good amount of green onion sprinkled over - these were definitely not as salty as some other places, which is nice if you're into that. Sweet & sour was good too, with some pieces of cartilage or bone in some pieces so be a little cautious.
We ordered the chicken ginger green onion, sautéed large pea sprouts, and black pepper beef clay pot rice. Both the chicken and beef were cooked perfectly; tender, flavorful, and balanced. The pea sprouts were simple yet surprisingly addicting. Despite being super busy, the service was excellent. Definitely recommend this spot and will be coming back!
We found this restaurant just across our hotel during our vacation in San Francisco. It had a high rating so my husband and I decided to eat here for dinner. It opens at 4 and we got there about 10 minutes after and the place was already full. Luckily, there was still a table that was available and we were able to get seated. The place is small but modern and clean. There was only 1 person in the counter to assist with the ordering that was on the app for quicker service. There were so many food that we wanted to try because they all looked so good but there's only 2 of us so we ordered the brisket and tofu clay pot and the salt and pepper prawns. They were both authentic, very tasty and fresh. The beef was tender and the prawns were really crispy that we were able to eat the shell too. The serving was generous but we finished every bit of it. The waiting line was already long outside before we were even finished eating.
So delicious! My first time trying here. It blows my mind. Beef stew with bean curd is really good. Hand-tipped chicken is also really good. Clay pot rice is supreme. We tried two flavors — Myself alone finished one pot. The service is also good. The staff is very friendly. I heard there is always a line. It is a small setting with 7-8 tables. At 1:40 pm, We waited for 30 mins when 6 parties before us. So do your own math. But I have to say it is worth it.
A relaxing cafe that serves wonderful Hong Kong style and Cantonese dishes in San Mateo/Belmont. It is always full but the service is quick. Food is authentic and delicious with large portions. We ordered the baked fish and pork chop over rice and cabbage with thin rice noodles. Lots of people orders the salt and pepper pork!fish (?) I also noticed the clay pot rice is huge! This restaurant is great for family and couples!
I love the clay pots, which have plenty of crispy rice. The pea shoots were fresh and cooked just right and the salt pepper pork chop was delicious. Prices are reasonable for the portions and the area. Service takes a while when the restaurant is full. I think the wait is worth it!
Clay pot rice is best I found in the Bay Area so far, the place is nice and cozy. Based off equipment along the HK milk tea would be good! I recommend calling ahead for long lead time dishes like the clay pot rice.
Everything was delicious! We randomly tried this spot, it’s small but fits maybe around 8 tables. 10/10 food, prices were very reasonable for the amount of food received. The food didn’t make me feel bloated or sluggish. We got there around 4:30 and were seated immediately. There was a line outside the restaurant as we left. Will definitely be returning.
Great food and friendly staffs! Have been ordering from this place 5 times in a month since I first tried this place. The food is authentic and delicious. We love ordering online and doing pickups so we don’t need to wait in the long line!
The food was delicious. I really liked the fried pork ribs. We got takeout, because the restaurant seating space was very small. Overall good Cantonese food.

Best claypot rice in the south bay by far! You may have to wait quite some time, however, it is worth it!

Short hours, closed between lunch and dinner. Very small restaurant with limited seating and hours. Few parking spots as the spots are in a shared strip mall. The menu comprises of old fashion food from the surrounding villages in Canton, the majority of immigrants from China from before the exclusion act ... the railroad workers! Get the claypot rice dishes. They do it right where the pot comes out hot enough to sear the rice, allowing a nice crust. Wait a bit after being served for the heated claypot to crisp up the rice that are in contact with its surface. Pour the sauce and mix. Very authentic Cantonese style claypot rice! Still a reference after the pandemic. They don't do good porridge though.
Added review: Reserved a big table, but when we arrived, both tables were occupied. The "reservation" merely puts you in for priority seating once you arrive, but doesn't guarantee your table at the appointed time. We had to cool our heels outside for 30 minutes (including our 97-year-old mom) while it was raining & very cold. Not a good look! Taking off one star for this meaningless & ridiculous reservation system. Worse, securing a reservation involved many, many calls to try & "catch" them while they picked up their phone. Leaving messages was pointless. No way to book a table online. Bathroom is outside and no maintenance. TP ran out, and no one refilled. Black pepper beef claypot was better than the chicken & mushroom one (better tasting) but the server admitted that the cut of beef the source is not the best (a few pieces had lots of tendon & proved too chewy). Eggplant w Tofu was better (savory) than Stir-fried Eggplants (sweet). ========== Small, family-style Cantonese restaurant (without the dim sum) offers well flavored, skillfully prepared dishes that surprise and satisfy. Triple-style steam eggs was a waste of space. The Basil Tofu (with veggies) infused the senses with fragrant basil while waking the palate with just enough homemade pepper sauce - THE best tofu dish I've ever had. The Salt & Pepper Fish Filet was equally amazing - it didn't look like much, with fried fish filet (skilfullybdone, not greasy at all) on a bed of finely chopped raw green peppers & cabbage but... the restrained use of salt & pepper with truly tender filets made us stop & say, "Oh, interesting!" The Chicken & Mushroom Rice Claypot was good - aficionados would appreciate the burnt rice at the bottom of the pot (Guo Ba). Put the Basil Tofu's sauce in the rice in the claypot, and you've got a winner. The Stir-Fried Eggplants came reasonably firm (nice surprise) in a rich sweet flavor. I would've preferred a savory approach, but combined with the other dishes, the eggplants provided another flavor dimension. I'd give the Pan-Fried Noodles a pass. Workman-like, and the noodles didn't have the 2 scorched sides one has come to expect of Cantonese cuisine. Many other better options. Portions were indeed generous as commented by other reviewers - in fact, I overheard the server advise other diners of this fact so they wouldn't over-order. Knowing this fact, we nevertheless added another dish to our order, so that we'd have take-home boxes. In the event, we made 3 meals out of this one dinner. Although the operation was mainly digital, from managing the line (there was a line as early as 4:30 pm!) to ordering to payment, the servers were surprisingly responsive. Hot tea was hot and strong, and free. This place can stand some expansion. Only 7 tables + 2 banquet-style round tables. Lines outside the entire (Saturday) evening.
In Belmont, there's a Cantonese bistro, With dishes that leave you with a glow, The chow fun is classic and divine, And honey walnut prawns, oh so fine. Chinese broccoli's another hit, A veggie dish you can't permit to miss, But wait times are long, patience you'll need, And service might not meet your lead. Though slow, the flavors are worth the wait, Their traditional cuisine will sate, So if you're up for a tasty treat, This small restaurant can't be beat.
This was our second lunch here. We weren't that hungry, but we wanted tea and snacks. A friend recommended the fried chicken wings, so we ordered them this time. They were indeed crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside—delicious! The lemon tea was fragrant, and the curry fish balls were also very tasty. We'll definitely come back to try other dishes next time.
No frills Chinese restaurant. Just great food. Large portion size. Salt and pepper pork chops 5/5 and pea sprouts and egg tofu 5/5. Get there early it's a small place.
Good restaurant with good food, but extremely busy. The restaurant is really small so they have very limited seatings. We arrived at 6pm. It was chilly evening, not many people standing outside so I thought their business was slow. They’re actually packed with customers inside the restaurant, and the waitlist already had 9 parties before us. We joined the list and waited in the car because it was windy and cold. It was our first time here, so we had no idea how long those 9 parties would take. The server said we would receive text messages when our table is ready. Until my husband received a text message saying we were first in line, and by the time we got seated in the restaurant in a small table with cramped space, it was past 7:30pm. Most of the dish were SOLD OUT. We waited 1 and a half hours for nothing. Many dishes that we wanted to try like Hainan chicken, chicken salad, or baked fish were no more. We were left completely disappointed and hungry. In the end, we ordered Sweet and sour fish, Peking pork ribs, Rice in a claypot, and Tofu Soup. The food we ordered was still good, but not what we wanted. We wasted time for nothing. That was an unpleasant experience. I gave 4 star but we won’t be coming back.
Small place if dine in you need to come early. You scan the QR code and order. Bathroom is outside and need to get key. Food is fairly priced

Authentic Chinese food. Service was OK. Portion was on the small side. The plate was large but the food wasn't that huge like other tables that I seen. Maybe because the dish was different??? It was busy and quite warm in the restaurant on the day I was there. No air con? The owner had to prop open the door for breeze. If I have the chance I would like to try this restaurant again.
Limited parking spaces around the area. We arrived at this place around 5:30pm, and a lot of people were waiting outside. It took us an hour and half to get the table. Honestly, it was not worth the wait after we tried out the food. We ordered the Salt Pepper Chicken Wings/Spicy, Shrimp Wonton Soup, Egg Yolk Pumpkin and Shrimp, Chinese Sausage and Bacon Clay Pot Rice, Yellow Eel Clay Pot Rice, Iced Lemon Tea and Milk Tea. The owner told us that the chef made a mistake on the shrimp wonton soup, and they would just gave us the extra meat for free and we were fine with that. In addition, when I was eating the Chinese sausage clay pot rice, I found out that there was a little piece of steel wool in the rice. When I told the owner about this incident, he apologized and said that he would not charge for this item. The owner was very courteous and we were about to go, so we didn’t wanna make a big deal here. Overall, the food was not surprisingly good but decent and generous portion of food. Friendly staff, but the wait time was way too long.
Beef chow fan is warm not even hot enough, did not have “pan smell”. Hainan chicken, chicken is ok but do not call it Hainan, it may be the China Hainan, definitely not the Southeast Asia Hainan chicken, it does not even have the right sauce. Eel clay pot rice, it came out real hot, the rice was cooked right, we really like the burnt bottom rice. However, not much eel (additional piece compared with other kind of clay pot rice) to hide that there were not much eel, they even add the sauce and mixed the rice up before swerving the pot.

The owner was very courteous and we were about to go, so we didn’t wanna make a big deal here. Overall, the food was not surprisingly good but decent and generous portion of food. Friendly staff, but the wait time was way too long.
Trash service. There were about 7 tables waiting in the line. The space is very small and no waiting area. It was cold outside so people had to squeeze in the small entrance area. The server asked people to wait outside after we waited about 20 mins. Some people including us lost patience and left. The estimate shows not busy around 7pm on Thursday, usually no wait. Not even close.
