Our go-to place for clay pot. Very good and very authentic. Their steam chicken is also out of this world.
really really good food and friendly service. food is a little bit pricey though.
I was craving Taishan claypot rice so I ventured out here for lunch. Ordered the unagi claypot and combo Chinese sausage, chicken, pork and duck claypot. Free soup is free but was nice to eat with the crusty claypot rice. The unagi was delicious. Big portion. There were bits of the combo that could of gotten crispier but it's all good. Service was kind and quick. I will be back for sure.
Very good experience at The Claypot House. The claypot rice with yellow eel and preserved meat packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the aroma from the clay pot added a unique depth to every bite. The staff was friendly, and the service was fast. Definitely a must-visit if you’re craving authentic Chinese-Toisanese comfort food!
nice no frills vibe and authentic Cantonese food like from my childhood. the meat is fresh and savory, and dishes show the clean flavor of the ingredients rather than excessive sauces. i've had the clay pot rices and they come out quick and sizzling hot (same when delivered). the claypot rices also come with soup which is an amazing touch. we need more restaurants like this in the city!
erm…. the bowls and plates were all paper… The clay pot rice dish tasted a little funky. It wasn’t bad, but something I could make at home (a little better lol). at least it wasn’t too expensive. The basic veggie dish was great tho!
A quick stop over on a last-minute invite by a dear friend would take me to this literal oasis in the West Portal sid of San Francisco. We ate at the buffet, and the savory variety was scrumptious. Surprisingly, the place had all but 4 guests, but that gave Anita and me the whole place to ourselves. No waiting, and repeats are welcomed. #TheBrokerWithAHeart
Our clay pots were delicious (salted fish with diced chicken, and house special lamb stew), with perfectly crusty rice. We like spice, so added a little of their pickled peppers and pickle juice to our clay pots. The pea sprouts we ordered (off menu) were tender, with a little garlic. Appreciated the free tea and soup. Service was friendly and efficient. Basic tables and dinnerware made it feel even more authentic.
Probably the one or very few spots that do clay pot rice in San Francisco. There’s times where I crave for this and wouldn’t mind the drive. Service is always great where I leave satisfied. Their menu got smaller most likely because of Covid where there’s only clay pot and other rice options versus having entree items like back then. It’s always great to come in a hungry appetite because their rice bowls are definitely more than enough for one person it I always finish mine. Definitely will be back!
Fantastic place for chinese food. Excellent claypot rice, especially the pork and scallop rice. But to be honest the lotus leaf rice stole the show. Well marinated rice steamed in lotus leaf, locked in the flavor and taste. Lady boss and her son are also very helpful. Easy parking in front of restaurant is also a plus
Delicious clay pot rice! The Chinese sausage is superb. Nice staff as well. Portion size is large, you’ll definitely be leaving with a takeout box.
Ordered Uber delivery!! Delicious Salted fish n Pork patty claypot rice. Came with free soup too !!!
Very nice traditional Chinese rice pot ( don’t know how to translate) it’s basically rice with all kinds of different meat ( your choice) cooked together in a pot, the specialty is the sauce and meat juice will mixed with the rice and the part close to the pot is crispy. I also got a soup and it’s yummy. Not the best as in China, but in
Great experience! We came in around the time they opened up and ordered #2 and the taste and portion were beyond expectations! The portion was big enough to share and fill up 2 people. They also had soup that came with the meal. Maybe because it’s the beginning of the day, but the waiter was attentive and our food came out quickly. The bathroom was clean.
Their clay pots have the crispy flavorful rice. Not as good as in Hong Kong, but probably the closest clay pot experience you can get here in the states. Huge portion sizes and under $25.
This place is a gem! Salted fish - an acquired taste - come here for the maximum UMAMI. Dunno where to start for the caramelized pork sausages. Delicious l. I can eat all day.
I can’t read the Chinese name of the place, but it does have the character meaning “king” in the name, and rightly so, because I have never had a more fragrant and savory bowl of rice than the one served here. We got an eel and sausage pot as well as an abalone and sea cucumber pot and both were amazing - the eel and sausage were salty and paired perfectly with the rice, and the abalone and shiitake mushrooms were nice and snappy as well. If you let the rice sit in the clay pot for a while, it gets nice and crispy along the sides and adds extra texture. After I finished I wish I could’ve reversed time and ate another bowl. It’s a pity they don’t have this in Seattle where I’m from
It’s so cool to try Taishan food without going to China! Their food and service is amazing! I would come back again. Eel clay pot is highly recommended!
Yum! The Chinese sausage is definitely the best meat. I got the yellow eel with Chinese sausage, my friend got the combination bowl with the sausage, pork, and duck. We agreed about the sausage. The crunchy rice was really good, and I don't normally like crunchy/ burned rice. The pig stomach soup was too peppery. The smoked plum and peanut porridge was interesting to try, but a bit too much flavor to eat more than a few spoonfuls.

My favourite spot to get clay pot rice in the city. The signature preserved meat clay pot is what I like to get. Get a nice crispy layer of rice at the bottom and love to top it off with the jalapeño sweet soy they have at the table.
Great clay pot rice. Lots of crispy bits at the bottom of the pots. Its a classic no frills local eatery.

Tasty rice-foundation dishes cooked and served in individual clay pots. We had one with chicken, beef, and Chinese sausage. It was basic, but delicious! Not on the menu, but a customer close by had it, we're done vegetable dishes. They have Chinese broccoli, but we opted for stir fried green beans with onions, which complemented the main dish wonderfully. While the dishes were good, no flavors popped out, so I'm giving only 4 M stars.
The Food There’s a good variety of clay pots to choose, from your main meats of beef, pork, and chicken to anything like seafood, frog, and even pig’s feet. One special service they have is the small pot of soup they bring at the beginning for free (call it appetizer if you will) while you wait for your food. The soup is light with pork, carrots, bean curds, and yellow beans. For the clay pots, I’ve tried few different ones here before, and they were all pretty good. But the Taishan Yellow Eel (黄鳝饭) is my go-to dish because I like Eels, and the dish bring back a nostalgic hometown taste. The Service and Restaurant The service in general is normal and good. The food comes out to table in a reasonable time. Out of all the time I’ve been there, I have yet to have a bad experience with their service. The restaurant quite spacious with good amount of room and lighting. There are different size tables to accommodate various party sizes. The Menu and Price There are a few places around the area that serves clay pot dishes, but not so much clay pot rice. The Claypot House is of a niche place that serves clay pot rice and have a good variety. Along with their clay pot rice, they also have Steamed Lotus Leaf Dishes, Taishan Specialty Dishes, and variety of Soups. Though the prices of these dishes are not what you would call cheap, I believe they are still reasonably priced.
Taishan claypot rice, very traditional in many ways. Food mostly good but a miss or two, stick to the regular menu's claypot rice and you'll generally be quite happy.
Sunday 11/19/23 Dinner at The Clay Hotpot House in San Francisco with my cousin, niece, and nephew. Having a Chinese authentic rice clay pot. It brings back good memories of these types of foods; it is so savory, delicious, and satisfying. The dishes will take some time to make so don’t come super hungry. The service staffs are attentive and worked fast to bring your foods. The restaurant has a traditional decor and may need to remodel. David Young Restaurant Enthusiast
Nostalgic and authentic! Really filled my claypot craving, and will return for some traditional canto herbal soups. They had plenty of soups on the menu that my mom made for me growing up. Pretty quiet on a Thursday night. Many Chinese elders were in to enjoy dinner, which is a great sign on the food quality. We enjoyed the yellow eel and Chinese sausage pot and the sausage, duck, preserved meats, and fish fillet pot. One claypot was crispier than the other and had more rice crust. The restaurant gave us complimentary soups which I enjoyed a lot. I think there is either a secret menu or just on request to order sautéed veggie greens because some tables around us ordered different plates of greens but I didn't see it on the menu. Lots of traditional Chinese desserts on the menu which were tempting, but we were too stuffed to order any dessert. Good spot!
They’re fast but I wish the crust was more full, good variety of clay pots. Also not all the meats were super good quality like the Chinese sausage could be better. Good that they serve with soup.
Nice portion, huge amount of rice, maybe less rice would be ok
We like coming here for our claypot rice. If you can train your brain to ignore the fly zapper all is good. We like the spare ribs claypot, lap cheurng and lap yook, and chicken and mushroom claypot. We also throw in some green beans and steamed tofu to balance out our meal. If you dine indoors, they provide paper plates and cups and plastic utensils. Food that is not claypot or steamed rice also arrive in/on plastic containers or paper plates. Just wanted people to be prepared for a based down experience! Good comes out quick and tastes fine!

I had a late lunch with friends, so the room was quiet and staff were friendly and attentive. It was my first encounter with claypot cooking, and the beef dish, which included other kinds of meat, wasn't exactly my favorite, but both my friends really enjoyed their dishes.
Open on New Year. ADA compliant, front door and restoom (big plus for accessibility). Atmosphere setting: Asian pop music in background, sometimes a little loud (electric guitar and drums), making it hard to have a conversation. Loved the freshness of the green beans and mixed vegetables with lotus, but the sauce flavor was lacking (for my taste). The staff were nice.
Hole in the wall establishment. Come if you are craving claypot rice, which is various meat toppings from eel, pork, chicken, preserved meats, etc, on rice cooked in a claypot and seasoned with slightly sweet soy sauce. This results in slightly crispy rice on the edges. Not much else on the menu but they are known for this one dish.
OK food, at OK prices. As others have remarked, the interior is dated and tables are crammed together. The food arrives pretty fast. The taste is Chinese-ish. The vegetables are reasonably fresh. The soup with daikon and pork is good. The eel rice is an acquired taste, only order it if you know what you are doing. The fried rice, like other dishes, are smaller than at other restaurants. Service is OK, usual for Chinese restaurants.

scam. We ordered a sea cucumber and abalone claypot rice (small), a soup and a veggie dish to go over the phone. We got home and found that there were only two tiny pieces of sea cucumber. The serving is supposed to serve three people. How do we divide up the sea cucumber :)? And then there were 4 canned abalone. We got more chicken and mushroom than anything else. In addition, we found that they over charged us on every single item: the rice by $10, the soup by $6, and the veggie by $3 comparing to the price on the online menu. This place is the opposite of honesty and integrity. I would not come back and I will be calling my credit card for dispute.
This place is so different from previous years, price is doubled but the clay pot is not authentic as before. It tasted like they steamed rice then pull into a clay pot. Look at the bottom of the pot, how can you see any signs of clay pot cooking method? I raised my concerns to the owner, she didn’t look at what I was trying to show her but in stead, she was yelling, defending that her restaurant is known for clay pot and in business for decades. She completely refused to admit, to look at it, instead, she stood by the table and talking like yelling, non stopping. I don’t thinking I am going to spend $20 for a clay pot filled with steamed rice and got yelled at. I will never be back.
