One of my favorite restaurants now ✨ Thanks to Vincent for outstanding service! Oh we loved the food! We tried six different dishes and all were tasty and well-presented. Love the menu customization possibility. It makes me happy to visit a fine dining restaurant where you get to choose dishes you eat, and the size of the menu (I usually have to leave half otherwise). Cozy, intimate atmosphere. Perfect for a date ❤️ revisit? Yes!

Had a fantastic dinner here. Diners, order less than you think you need, because the portions are quite large AND the servers will hand out multiple free bites throughout dinner! My only complaint was that the risotto was too cluttered. The rice soaked up so much delicious goodness, but there were so many ingredients on the plate, it was impossible to enjoy. I recommend removing the peas and shrimp. But overall, food was lovely and definitely wanting to come back!

From the moment you walk in you are immersed in a gentle, warm vibe and you are greeted immediately. Service from the moment you sit down until the second you leave the service is on point and diligent. I loved my experience and would love to go back to try something else on the menu. 5/5

We had an excellent experience. The service was wonderful compared to so many other SF fine restaurants - very attentive, helpful and professional. The food was fantastic and no one in my party of six had any negative comments whatsoever. The wine pairings were ideal, even if predictable, and easy crowd pleasing choices. While not inexpensive, a good value for today's SF fine dining possibilities. I'm sorry I waited so long to go to this landmark SF restaurant.

Everything was extraordinary: the food was absolutely superb (we each had four courses and tasted all of the eight dishes: not one was less than exquisite); the menu choices are enormous and they generously permit you to mix and match your courses from any category (I.e., you could create a four course tasting menu consisting of two appetizers and two desserts !!!! No other restaurant allows you to do that !). We ordered the wine pairing menu and it was fabulous, coached by knowledgeable staff who are able to explain it all. The staff is warm, charming, helpful, and their choreography in serving the meal is pure ballet. Ambience is lovely as well. The only area for improvement is that courses should be served with more time in between each one. Also, we resent the 7% surcharge to cover employee benefits being passed to the customer - management should cover that. Gary Danko is a treasure of a restaurant - and we are foodies from NYC with regular visits to Paris restaurants. CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!! Well done.

A memorable, gracious, and beautifully executed dining experience. Their execution really sets a high bar for fine dining. From the moment we arrived, every interaction felt thoughtful and genuinely warm. We must have interacted with seven or eight members of the staff, and everyone was so welcoming and gracious, with just the right balance of formality. And each person knew who we were, why we were there, and our preferences. It felt like one continuous conversation throughout the evening. They really made the experience feel effortless. Each dish was beautifully crafted and felt personal. You get the sense the kitchen is cooking specifically for you rather than just executing a menu. It is a meal that encourages you to slow down, enjoy the flavors of each bite, and be present with the person you’re sharing it with. The atmosphere in the room is formal enough to feel special, yet relaxed enough to feel comfortable. Everyone around us seemed at ease, happy, and genuinely enjoying both the food and the moment. They really made the whole evening easy to enjoy. We had a wonderful evening at Gary Danko celebrating a special occasion, and it’s an experience we’ll remember.

Gary Danko saved our anniversary dinner. On December 21st, San Francisco experienced a major power outage. We originally had a reservation at a different (Michelin two-star) restaurant, but they canceled on us just 40 minutes before our scheduled time due to having no power. We had traveled to SF specifically for the evening and booked a babysitter. I called around and managed to get a 5:30 pm reservation at Gary Danko. We had heard good things but had never been, and at that point, we were simply grateful to have a table anywhere. Despite traffic light outages causing us to arrive about 15 minutes late, the staff was incredibly accommodating. We were seated in a cozy loveseat booth, which turned out to be perfect. I don’t mind not sitting across from my spouse—especially since the five-course menu is very much a “choose your own adventure,” and we love sharing dishes. Sitting side by side made that easy and enjoyable, and the booth itself was very comfortable. The food is classic French cooking done well. I especially loved the lobster dish offered as the second course. The oyster dish in the first course reminded me of The French Laundry’s Oysters and Pearls—not at the same level in terms of ingredients or presentation, but it reminded me of that classic dish and it was delightful. My stuffed quail was a technically demanding dish, and it was executed beautifully. The quail was cooked just right—juicy, tender, and absolutely satisfying. Our favorite course of the night ended up being the cheese course. If we were to do it again, we would opt for four courses and skip dessert altogether. The desserts were fine, but nothing particularly memorable or worth writing home about. The wine pairing was reasonable and thoughtfully selected. At $170 for the tasting menu and $140 for the wine pairing, we felt the pricing was fair—especially for a restaurant that previously held a Michelin star. That said, I can also see why Gary Danko eventually lost its star. The menu is very polished and technically sound, but it isn’t especially innovative. The service is excellent and delivers a classic, old-world level of refinement, though it may not resonate as strongly with a younger crowd. During our meal, most of the diners around us appeared to be 50+. Overall, we still had a wonderful evening and were genuinely grateful to have such a solid meal to salvage our anniversary after our original restaurant canceled on us at the last minute.

Fine-dining venue that has been an institution in San Francisco for over 25 years. The quality of the food and efficiency of the service staff has remained consistently excellent, and it is always a solid choice for a special occasion meal. The cheese cart is a must-try if you like cheese! Only downside is parking could be hard to find (no valet option), so the best option is the garage under Ghirardelli Square, but parking spaces are small and turns are tight.

We snagged a last minute reservation at Gary Danko and we were so happy with our experience. Friendly and top notch professional service with beautiful food. I loved the format of being able to choose from any section for the courses - very cool and made it simple for my husband as he likes fish and I do not.

Gary Danko is an extraordinary culinary experience that deserves every one of its five stars. From the moment you step inside, the service is impeccable; attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm without being intrusive. The staff anticipates your every need, making you feel incredibly cared for throughout the entire meal. And the food, it's simply a masterclass in flavor and presentation. Each dish is a work of art, meticulously crafted and bursting with incredible taste. The menu offers a perfect balance of classic elegance and modern creativity. This isn't just a dinner; it's a perfectly orchestrated event where every detail, from the first bite to the last, is designed to leave you in awe. It's a true San Francisco dining landmark and a meal you'll be thinking about long after you've left.

Dining at Gary Danko was an unforgettable experience. I had the 5-course meal, and from start to finish, every single dish was a standout. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the flavors only got better with each course. You can tell there’s serious attention to detail in every bite. The pacing was perfect, and the service matched the quality of the food—attentive without being intrusive. By the time dessert arrived, I was already impressed, but the crème brûlée took it to another level. Silky, perfectly torched on top, and absolutely worth saving room for. If you're looking for a high-end dining experience that actually lives up to the hype, Gary Danko delivers.

Simply stunned by the quality of the food, the generous portions, and the stellar service that the staff provided. I haven't yet eaten at a fine dining restaurant that's left you feeling stuffed and thoroughly satisfied with the experience of the meal. Would highly recommend you come and try the food here! The tasting menu was highly customizable and impressive across the board.

AMAZING!! I’m a litttle late on leaving my review as I dined here mid January(while in town for the JP Morgan conference), but clearly this place is still on my mind! This restaurant by far exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked in I felt welcomed. Every server was warm, knowledgeable, and just overall welcoming. I dined alone and let me tell you, I had a great time! Everything and I do mean everything was delicious! The cheese spread presentation blew me away as I was not expecting an entire cart of cheese to come out to choose from because again, I was dining alone. I also added the wine pairing and my server did an outstanding job giving me a little background on each as well as giving me a couple different ones to try. I can go on and on about this place. Do not hesitate to dine with them. Definitely an experience I’ll never forget and will be looking forward to dining with them again in the future!

My son and I had an amazing experience at Gary Danko tonight. I have wanted to try this restaurant for a long time, had high expectations, and was not disappointed. We both ordered the 3 course tasting menu, I paired mine with the wine suggestions, which perfectly matched the meal. Each dish we had was outstanding, and the service was maybe the best I've ever experienced at any restaurant. We couldn't recommend a special occasion meal at Gary Danko highly enough! This restaurant is special.

Service is excellent! The host at the door offered us to park upfront because we couldn’t find parking and we had a child! Food is well seasoned and very good! We ordered the 4 course (we didn’t pick the cheese, it would too much food) and it’s good portions! Cocktails are good too! Desserts are tasty! They gave us extra desert and couple to go! Good food options for kids if they don’t eat what is on the menu. It’s pricey but totally worth it! I highly recommend you book well in advance. We booked a month ahead and barely found a spot!

We had a lovely anniversary dinner at Gary Danko. The service was wonderful and the team brought us some complimentary bites with happy anniversary spelled out on them. Some of the dishes such as the scallops were outstanding. Others were good but not fantastic. It seems as if they've made the decision to try to move more people through the restaurant on a nightly basis, which is probably why they can afford to serve top quality food at reasonable prices, but also probably the reason they do not have a Michelin star. The tables are very close together, in some cases requiring you to sit next to your partner instead of across the table from them. When the cheese cart is out, it is impossible to pass through the aisles near it. At our table, this resulted in many people squeezing up between our table and the cheese cart and rubbing their butt over our table as they passed. Not what you would expect in a first class restaurant. The decor also seemed a bit dark and dated to us. So not perfect, but a good experience, especially if you're a new new to fine dining and want to see what a near-Michelin experience looks like at a not-crazy expensive price. Seems like a good balance for trying to build a viable business in a tourist-heavy location. The 7% health care mandate hidden in the bill is way out of line. The whole idea is ridiculous, but most restaurants in SF, with far lower average tickets, seem to get by with 3% (and plenty don't charge anything).

Great service. Food was hit and miss. Some dishes are excellent, some are just OK. Glazed Oysters with Caviar, Seared Scallops, Duck Breast and Roast Lobster were delicious. Beef Tartare and Quail - not the best. We really appreciate complimentary desert and carrot cake take home gift.

The service is absolute perfection, I would say it is impeccable. The dining area is well designed and upscale from the romantic lighting to the offer of readers if you’re unable to read the menu in the dim light. They will also attach a small book light to your menu and provide you with a hook to hang your purse on at the table so you have somewhere to place it your purse. Located near Ghirardelli Square on the northern end of San Francisco, you can easily stroll to the waterfront after dinner. Now onto the dinner itself: You have the option of a 3,4 or five course meal at a price starting at 138, 150 and $178 respectfully. A few highlights and then a few observations. My niece ordered an appetizer of risotto with lobster and it was perhaps one of the best risotto I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. I ordered the lobster bisque, expecting something in a delicate cream base and what arrived was a tablespoon and a half of lobster in the bottom of an empty bowl and they brought out a small pot of broth and poured it on top of the tablespoon and a half of lobster and chopped carrots that was in the bowl. The broth itself was extremely pungent and somewhat undesirable on the pallet however, once it was mixed with the ingredients in the bowl, it was savory and delicious. It was not what I expected as a lobster bisque. It was deconstructed so to speak and not creamy, it was however, good. I also ordered the mushroom tart. It was served in a flaky pastry. The texture of the pastry was good, but it tasted a little bit over done and not as buttery as I would’ve expected, and they contents of mushroom medley was small and bit on the bland side. I would not order either of my appetizer choices again. There is a lobster dish served with Potato, which was absolutely perfect. From the seafood menu, I ordered scallops. Two scallops came with two dollop of pickled salad. The flavor and texture was absolute perfect perfection, with a slight hit of citrus and turmeric. My sister had ordered the beef with potatoes. She said it was extremely tender and delicious. And for dessert, the chocolate soufflé was light and every bite was a decadent pleasure. A couple of observations in the pricing, I picked lighter smaller foods while my niece picked heavier, more filling foods and it’s priced the same for examples. She received a whole beautiful portion of risotto for her appetizer. While, I picked a deconstructed lobster bisque and the price is the same. For my entire dinner, I had a small soup, the mushroom tart, two scallops and a soufflé for $150. It seems like three tapas and dessert shouldn’t cost $150. My niece had risotto, lobster tail, beef, and dessert, and that was $150 which seems like it should be worth it as an actual meal, rather than what felt like small bites on my course. It’s just an observation in regards to the pricing not a rant or a rave. I just like to say another word about the service from the moment you sit down it will be the best service you’ve ever had. They take the plates and the silverware away after each course the staff is informative and helpful. Overall, it is a very memorable experience perfect for a celebration. One last observation, my niece and sister do not drink so they ordered diet soda, and I believe people become accustomed to have their soda fountain refill at no charge, And the final bill showed $38 for just diet soda. I’m sure the bill was over $600 for three people with only one alcoholic beverage. So keep in mind this is not a place that you want to go to if you are budget conscious, yet it will definitely be a memorable experience filled with perfectly prepared and presented cuisine.

Recently, I had a dinner with my spouse at Gar Danko. The appointment was at 10. I thought they would be closing down as their shop closing time is 10. They said we are okay to eat until 12 a.m. But we had to place all our courses upfront, which is kind of not convenient. Service-wise, it was great. All the servers were competent, helpful, and charming. They explained all the dishes and were constantly checking on us. There were multiple gift desserts to charm us. Coming to food, the menu looked great. But beware, vegetarians, there are literally three dishes you can choose from. I would say that the place is not vegetarian-friendly. We had like 1/10 options of vegetarian and non-veg options. They offered us coffee before dessert. The latte tasted really good, and I enjoyed it a lot. To us its not worth the price we paid as its over $150 a person and its not acceptable to have poor menu options for vegetarians.

Foods really lacking. Nothing stood out. We recently spent the same amount at Angler and had a much nicer meal. Still love the ambiance and service here. Old SF energy. I recommend it but you’re not coming here for good food. The only stand out was the cheese but whole food’s got a similar collection so it doesn’t say much. I got the 5 course but I’d recommend the 3 given it’s more about the ambiance not the food. And heads up there is a 7% sf mandate, I still give 20% out of guilt but I wish the restaurant wouldn’t charge hidden fees. It makes me uncomfortable and I don’t want to return to hidden fee restaurants.

Our recent dinner at Gary Danko was unfortunately not at the level one would expect from a restaurant with such a long-standing reputation. While service began warmly and certain dishes were well prepared, the overall experience fell short in several key areas. Food: • The amuse bouche tasted stale, and the sourdough was underwhelming. • The scallops were well-seared and enjoyable, and the duck was the strongest dish of the evening. • My mom had the lobster risotto, which was pretty good, but the branzino felt dry to me (though she enjoyed it). • The biggest disappointment was the soufflé. Mine was slightly undercooked and my mom’s was noticeably more raw in the center. When she mentioned it, our server didn’t acknowledge anything was wrong and just kept asking if she wanted something else, which felt a bit off for a restaurant of this level. • She switched to a crème brûlée, which was fine but nothing memorable. After-effects: Unfortunately, both my mom and I had stomach cramps later that night (hers started first, mine around 2am). The next day we could barely eat anything except some chicken soup with ramen noodles, which completely ruined our day. Overall: There were bright spots, but the inconsistency in execution, combined with the dessert mishandling and the stomach issues afterward, made the experience hard to justify at this price point. For us, it’s not a restaurant we would return to, especially with so many strong alternatives in San Francisco.
