I’m Thai and a big noodle lover. Every time I visit San Francisco, I stop by here and never get disappointed. The food is delicious, and the staff are always friendly. Highly recommended 👍👍👍👍
Love the new bright, spacious location. Such an inviting space. Clean street parking (meter) or parking garage across ($4 per 30min). Food is fantastic as always. Glad they moved. Still our favorite Thai place in San Francisco. Authentic, great quality food and still reasonably priced.
Love love love this place!!!! I am Thai and spicy food. We ordered the papaya salad. It tastes exactly like what I ate in Thailand. We made the special request that we wanted it to be very spicy and they didn’t fail us. It was so spicy and delicious 🤤. I will definitely come back here. To my fellow Asian people, please try this place if you miss Thai food you have in Thailand.
<< PSA: New and quieter location on O’Farrell >> Authentic Thai option heavily frequented by local Thais. Street-style noodle dishes, a specialty. * Zen Yai Tom Yum noodle encompasses the sweet, sour and fragrant mix quintessential of the Bangkok street food palette. * Yen Ta Fo, a playful mix of textures and flavors: seafood cake, shellfish, fungus, and pork blood. * Beef noodle soup with beef balls, fragrantly spiced and deeply beefy. * Pad See Ew covers all bases and delivers classically. Ask for the spice tray for some heat.
Awesome food. And im picky about my Thai food we ordered the green papaya salad, Silver noodle salad, the barbecued pork, and Tom Kah soup. Every single plate was excellent 👍 Service was great, lots of space and very open with large windows. The area is a little difficult for parking, Service is fast. Overall EXCELLENT food and VERY good prices....much less expensive than other restaurants. We were a large group of seven, but everything went smooth and fast.
The new location is 1 block away from the old location which is great! The interior is very homey, spacious and great for large groups, families and kids!! Large menu that accommodates all palates. I sampled the two poplar boat noodles (small sizes). They were so unique, punchful and super delicious!!! To top it off, the service was inviting and welcoming!! Definitely an A++ eatery.
Zenyai has moved to a new location on O’Farrell Street, and it’s just as good as ever. Same delicious menu, same authentic flavors — and still the only place where you can get boat noodles served in a chicken ceramic bowl, just like in Thailand. The prices are very affordable, the new space is clean, bright, and comfortable, and they’ve even added Thai snacks you can take home. So happy to see them in their new spot!
They moved! I like their new location A LOT better than the previous. It’s in a better (safer) neighborhood. I absolutely LOVE the boat noodle. It’s what I get every time. The beef version is fire. The broth is so bold and full of flavor. Tiny bits of fried pork rind top the noodle. Yum! This time though the pork belly with Chinese greens was not good. The pork belly was dry and over fried.
The most epic authentic Thai food in San Francisco. I typically go with the half fried chicken super juicy has great dipping sauce as well. Also, the beef blood Thai boat noodle is to die for. I love the ambience inside and the people working there are the best. Amazing service. The new location is amazing too!
Amazing boat noodles! And very reasonably priced and kind servers. Highly recommend. (Note that the spicy papaya salad is shockingly spicy and I would only recommend it if you have an extremely high spice tolerance)
I never write reviews. This place is special. There is a level of care and technique in these dishes that you rarely find. It. Is. Delicious. This owner knows what she is doing. I'm truly impressed. In one month they change locations, but this current location made me take pause. Once the first pad see ew noodle hit I knew I was in the right place.
Amazing Thai food. Very reasonable price for this area. We visited this restaurant 3 times in one week. The best part is they have small bowl so I can try several things. My favorite is ต้มยำหมูสับ tom yum and pad see ew. Service is always excellent and attentive. However, the surrounding area is not the best, full of homeless. Hard to find parking spot
They serve authentic thai food! I ordered boat noodles and it came just as what i had in Thailand! My friend also ordered Pad Kapao crispy pork and it tasted great (even though i prefer not to have the green beans in pad kapao). Price is great. The servers seemed kind. My phone was running out of battery in their restaurant and the server lady charged it for me using their outlet! The only con would be the location because this restaurant sits on where there are many homeless people. We were walking there and it was our first time walking in San Francisco so it was a little scary.
I just had food delivered to me from a different platform from this restaurant. The boneless duck 🦆 was perfectly cooked and somewhat spicy 🌶️. The ambience of the place looks really good from the pictures I have seen. I give this place a five star ⭐️. I highly recommend this restaurant. I may order from them again sometime again.
Very authentic thai restaurant in the heart of SFO! We ended up here as suggested by a thai lady we met in a café. She suggesed Zen Yai as a genuine thai restaurant. Totally true! We ordered the sausage, papaya salad, cashew nut, pad thai and pad krapao ( last two not shown in the pictures). Everything was delicious. The waiters were very friendly. Regarding the price/quality, very reasonable. The only negative thing to mention, which is not related to the restaurant, is the fact that the neighborhood is full of people struggling with drug adiction in the streets. It is a bit shocking to see and if you come from abroad like us that we come from Europe, it was sad and confronting to see.
Been here a couple times and I can say that the food here is pretty authentic! As someone who is half Thai, I found the food here to remind me of the food in Thailand. I got the Pad Kra Pao and it was perfect. Had some spice to it and came with the fried egg. Exactly how I remember getting it in Thailand. There is parking on the street in front of the restaurant and the street isn’t typically too busy so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find parking.
A gem in Tenderloin. They are open during Thanksgiving which saves our day. The food are very good. We had calamares, chicken wings, tom yum noodles, and spring roll. I recommend the spring roll because the sauce is so delicious. They serve the food fast and the price is very affordable. I notice there are locals who are familiar with the place and friends with the people in the restaurant. There are also some big groups coming to eat. I will go back to this place and try other dishes.
Very authentic Thai spot, helps to come with a native speaker! One of my favorite dishes here is the boat noodle. It's actually very hard to find a place that can do small bowls allowing for multiple options! I love the fact that they leave out all the extra seasoning/condiments to allow you to edit your dish to the flavor you like. I have never had anything bad here and I've tried many of the dishes here. I highly recommend this spot if anything just for it's boat noodle!
Was here years ago and I'm glad that they survived. Mainly came here for the small bowl of boat noodles and ordered more while dumping the old soup into the new one. Came here with my uncles and we ordered a few things. Can't go wrong with the pad Thai and the pineapple fried rice. Also ordered the appetizer platter as well as the red curry with duck. Had a small feast and everything was delicious
I used to be a loyal customer, went to the old location on Ellis St all the time, and was going to the new location since they moved. I told my friends and coworkers at my hospital about it and supported them until this incident happened on the day after Christmas in 2025. My coworker and I went there for lunch when they just opened for the day. We tried to order a dish, Thai Chicken Rice, from the special menu, the kind of menu that written in Thai language posted on the black board in the middle of the restaurant. The waitress told us “Sorry, no special menu today” so we were like “Ok. no problem” then we proceeded with ordering from the regular menu. Ten minutes later, to my astonishment, she brought out that same dish to a table 15 feet away from us. When I saw that, I gave the waitress eye contact and signal her to come over for possible explanation. She completely avoided us for the rest of our lunch. Very rude and disappointing!!!
