Amazing food and lovely atmosphere. What a wonderful place for business lunches, brunches with friends, or breakfast with family. What an oasis in Albany.
What a delicious lunch and the portions were good. I had the green light special and my partner had the chicken sandwich. The inside space is lovely, and worth seeing. I will return when the weather is nice to have lunch and enjoy one of the outside eating areas.
Visiting friends in Albany we went to Iron Gate Cafe to have lunch on a cold December day after taking a walk in Washington Park. We checked out the menu online so we already knew what we wanted to order for lunch. When we walked in we told the host that our two friends were about fifteen minutes away and she told us our table would be ready in about 15 minutes. We were seated before our friends showed up. We ordered an Ice Tea and a Chai Latte while waiting. Once our friends showed up we all ordered our meals. I ordered the Bean Berger (Homemade black bean burger, smashed avocado, lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion, and vegan ranch on a toasted hard roll, served with French fries $17.00 Add: Cheese +$1.00). My wife ordered the Thai Shrimp Bowl (Sweet Thai chili shrimp, cabbage, spinach, carrots, cucumbers, avocado, quinoa, and a lime $17.00). They both had Mimosas ($11.00). Our two friends shared the Gluten Free Pancakes (Triple stack with maple syrup and your choice of protein $16.00) and the breakfast burrito (Three scrambled eggs, sausage, crushed cherry peppers, potatoes, smashed avocado, and cheddar in a flour tortilla, served with a side of ranchero $17.00). My wife and I shared our meal and I got a taste of the pancakes. All of the food was delicious. It’s a cool place with lots of small and medium sized rooms with a rock and roll style and serves a variety of vegan and non-vegan options. Before going I read reviews of Iron Gate Cafe and a few low ratings were because of rude staff. I can say that everyone we dealt with was outstanding. Our server was friendly and came over to check on us a few times. I look forward to going back and trying the breakfast burrito.
We really enjoy visiting new cities and a big part of that is finding great dining experiences. The Iron Gate Cafe fit that requirement. As representative of the city and community, Albany should be proud of what The Iron Gate is providing. We stopped in for a late lunch after a short tour of the city. The staff were very welcoming and Sam was a great server, offering suggestions with a smile and very friendly personality. We chose a variety of menu items, to all share. From local brews and craft beverages to very unique twists on classic favorites. The Iron Gate Breakfast sandwich was on of those. The basic sausage-egg-cheese classic but kicked up with a perfectly toasted(not too toasted) bagel and a roasted pepper relish that was an incredible accompaniment. With a dish called The Southern Smother, how could you pass up homemade waffles, fried chicken and sausage gravy. A definite hit although I was a bit put off by the pepper sauce served for dipping. If it were a sweet based pepper sauce, it would have paired better with the waffles, but still a dish worth recommending. But the big standout was the Brie stuffed French toast! Perfectly cooked through to offer a nice crust with a wonderful custardy inside. Put that together with the Brie & berries and you have a really great balance. So GOOD!! Original we were only planning on one afternoon visit to see Albany, but the Iron Gate Cafe is reason enough to make a 2nd visit.
Sunday morning (Dec 7th) my friends and I had the pleasure of eating at your establishment. What a wise choice we made that day. K.C. The server did a wonderful job and attended to all our needs in a timely manner. Talking to K.C. reminded me of the movie Jerry MaGuire when Renee Zelleger tells Tom Cruise "You Had me at Hello!" Well, I asked K.C. a question and her answer told me everything I needed to know about the Iron Cafe. "Yes, we have Ice Cold Whole Milk." That made your establishment my favorite place for breakfast the next time I visit Troy, NY. I enjoyed your wonderful home fries, eggnog french toast, and the clincher was bacon in my create your own omelet which was absolutely delicious. I will definitely recommend your establishment to friends and family in future. Thank you.
First time here and I JUST LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THUS PLACE! From walking in to a comfortable homey vibe and the hot chocolate was AMAZING !!! And the club chicken was GREAT!!! THE SERVICE WAS PHENOMENAL BY CASEY !!! Ill will be coming back!!
I love this quiet café in Albany, NY. Service is friendly, food is delicious, the atmosphere is quiet yet inviting to chat with friends. To my surprise is pet friendly! I was enjoying my eggs Benedict when a four legs entered the place, friendly and quiet but attentive to anyone who likes to pet him, he and the owner were sitting at the patio for best comfort. Loved everything about it. My family ordered salads with all kinds of veggies, quinoa and chicken. Hearty, fresh, yum… menu is diverse with tons of great sounding options. They've done an amazing job preserving the historic feeling of the buildings while converting the space into a beautiful dining area. What made the experience even more special was her extensive knowledge about the history of the buildings. I had the pleasure of visiting Iron Gate Cafe during my Albany visit to University at Albany and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and has just the right balance of cozy and lively—perfect for sitting down with friends or enjoying a meal on your own. The service was attentive without being overbearing, which made the whole visit feel relaxed and enjoyable. But the highlight for me was definitely the food. I ordered the Cajun omelette, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best omelettes I’ve ever had. Perfectly seasoned, cooked just right, and full of flavor—it exceeded my expectations in every way. On top of that, I’m very particular about my coffee, but their latte was spot-on, smooth, rich, and expertly crafted. Definitely coming back here next time I come to Albany. Iron Cafe has definitely earned a spot on my list of favorites. Highly recommended!
Perfect spot for brunch! I’ve come a few times since moving to Albany, NY. Absolutely love coming in the spring/summer especially if you do patio seating. We were warmly greeted. My drinks are ALWAYS perfect if Mary/Trish is at the little bar, she gives amazing recommendations, and very professional. It makes a difference when you can notice someone actually likes their job and interacts with us customers. My coworkers & I work nearby and it’s a great meet up place for a few lattes in between business meetings. I’ve not found another brunch spot yet outside of the Nest but I prefer the customer service here. Best menu item is hands down the French toast. Feels more like “home.” Thanks! ☺️
Delicious food, I got Cajun scramble and asked for mushrooms and it was amazing. We also got raspberry Brie French toast which was melt in your mouth good! Very cute from the inside, good find for us!
I love this restaurant! Staff were very friendly and attentive. Gave us more time when we needed it and had our food out quickly and with a smile. Outside seating area is beautiful and not too loud, indoor seating is cozy and comforting. French toast, turkey sausage, and chai latte were all delicious. Prices were fair as well. Definitely try the specials if you see something you like, especially in the winter!
They have great food and service. Been to this place several times and finding parking is always a struggle. Wait time to get seated may be long depending on what time of the day you get there. Might end up having to reserve seats and returning. Overall a very inclusive place for breakfast/brunch
This is a very great cafe. The food was fabulous and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. They treated us with respect and kindness. The whole experience was amazing. The inside of the building was so impressive that you could feel at home with the whole experience. The outside was just as beautiful and peaceful. I have not captured the experience on my camera but trust me if you can then you should stop in for a wonderful experience in food and service.
Great food! Such a unique place right across from the Albany Public Library. Indoor and outdoor dining. Loved it so much went for breakfast both mornings of our trip. Super friendly service too! Definitely recommend!
Well-worth the wait. Everything was delicious. Best brunch I’ve had in a long time. Great vibes from the building and staff. Recommend putting yourself on the waitlist online if you are coming on a weekend. The in-person menu with specials was bigger than the online menu. Menu prices are with 4% credit card processing fee. We paid cash instead.

Irongate Cafe in Albany is a solid breakfast and brunch spot. Started with a hot cider that was really good. The jerk chicken bean soup was delicious with great flavor, though the chicken didn’t really taste jerked. I also had the Raging Cajun scramble which was a big portion, very hearty, and seriously filling. Overall, a good stop for a satisfying meal.

We came at 2 PM and got an indoor table right away (highly recommend — outdoor seating can get hot). The mansion is gorgeous, with preserved wallpaper, chandeliers, and woodwork that give it so much charm. Service was top-notch — our server had great energy and honest food tips. We had the Big Iron Gate with an English muffin and the Mother Clucker Burger. The standout was the Cherry peppers ạ the sweet and spicy paired well with juicy proteins (chicken and sausage) and eggs. Only downside: the bathroom had an unpleasant smell. Fixing that would make the before-and-after-meal experience much better.
What an ambiance. We were received by the kindest hostess and server and then seated in the middle of this historic dining room. Both indoor and outdoor seating were picturesque. The food was also decent although I found the omelets cooked in a little bit extra oil as I could, it's residue on my plate and it bothered me a little. The side salad was amazing with a little bit of extra dressing for my liking. We tried their hot chocolate with Irish cream which was neither hot nor cold somewhere in the middle but tasted decent.

BE AWARE!! This restaurant is located in zombieville!! I cannot describe the amount of filth, trash, abject poverty, homeless zombies walking around - RIGHT outside OF THE FRONT gate. The smell. It was shocking. 😳 We were genuinely worried about parking in the vicinity. We had driven 15 miles out of the way on our journey to eat at the restaurant due to the high ratings. A complete waste. The food? Meh. Nothing special. I had the cheesy grits and shrimp. Grits were lukewarm. Too much of a spice (I think garlic)Shrimp - ugh. My mom didn’t order as she was so turned off by the outside that she didn’t want to eat. My husband had the raspberry Brie French toast and said it was good - not great. Atmosphere? SO LOUD you couldn’t carry on a conversation without raising your voice. Our waitress was great! Do not fall for the high ratings - you will be disappointed. The only thing I think of that would be the basis for the ratings are lots of locals who are simply used to living in such squalid conditions.
