This is New York City’s best kept secret. You cannot convince me there’s better Italian food anywhere else. I found this hidden gem 5 years ago. I’m so happy to say the quality of the food remains the same. This restaurant is truly one of those places you want to gate keep because the food is that incredible but you also want to tell everyone you know because you want them to experience the delicious food this restaurant has to offer for themselves.
Malatesta is everything you want in a classic New York Italian spot: cozy, candlelit, buzzing with energy, and effortlessly charming. Nestled in the West Village, it feels like a little slice of Italy tucked into a tree-lined corner of Manhattan. The homemade pasta is the star — the spinach and ricotta gnocchi melts in your mouth, and the tagliatelle with bolognese is rich, comforting, and perfectly seasoned. Their burrata is always fresh, creamy, and a must-order to start. Pair anything with a glass of red, and you’re golden. The service is warm and casual, never overbearing, and the vibe is relaxed yet lively — ideal for date nights, catching up with friends, or a solo glass of wine and pasta kind of evening.
Excellent Food! The Spinache Gnochi alone is worth the trip! Staff was friendly and attentive. The only ding on the atmosphere is because it is noisy, but that sort of comes with the territory when the place is popular!
Lovely wee restaurant with great food. We had two different kinds of pasta and some calamari, all of which tasted amazing. The staff were very kind and good at their jobs. We sat outside which was great in the warmer weather.
Delicious little Italian eatery! Located towards the outskirts of the west village, this unassuming corner bistro was a great find! Inside it is cute and homey, if not a little packed. My only complaint about the restaurant was that it was a little cramped. We ended up at a table right by the door, so everyone that entered or left the restaurant brushed our chairs as they did so. However, other than that, it was amazing! The service was great, and everyone was attentive. And I have to give a shot out to the Spinach Gnocchi - it was perfect. Not too heavy and a great flavor - I highly recommend it! And, because of its location, the restaurant does not feel like you are in the middle of the noisy hustle and bustle that can be a lot of the west village. Instead, it's a nice quiet area that is still walking distance from the nightlife of the Christopher street bars. (I'd also assume it'd be easier to find street parking nearby than by most WV restaurants) All in all, it was delicious! Go and enjoy a wonderful Italian dinner!
Handmade pasta, seasonal specials. The spaghetti, gnocchi and orecchiette were all standouts. Great outdoor seating if it’s nice, vibey inside if it’s not.
Wow. Just wow. The best Italian food I've ever had, ever. Worth waiting a few minutes to be seated because the food and atmosphere is incredible. I highly suggest you go with the Spinach Gnocchi if you don't know what to get, and aren't much of food snob. It is crazy good! Great service and amazing food. Cappuccino was fabulous also. Picture is of their caprese and bruschetta which was our appetizer, also bomb digity.
Literally if I could give this restaurant more than five stars I ABSOLUTELY would. Ordered the Tagliatelle Bolognese and it really did not disappoint; I cleaned the whole plate! The vibe of the whole place is so nice, and the service was also really phenomenal; we were the first to arrive, and service took no more than 10 minutes for our table of five. Massive props to the chefs, too! Stellar food, service, and serving time. Thank you to everyone who was so kind to us yesterday. :)
This place is GREAT! The food is fantastic! Fresh pasta dishes have a flavor and texture which can't be duplicated with the dry pasta at most places. And the sauces hold onto the pasta here like few other places. The menu is terrific and you will be happy with everything they make. The appetizers and salads are delicious. And if you want meat instead of pasta, you will not be disappointed. Leave room for dessert - unbelievable tiramisu! A must do, if you're in the area. Prices are very reasonable, for the quality of the food. service is typically excellent.
I would give this restaurant more stars if available in the rating! Warm and cozy atmosphere, great service and the food was outstanding! A great experience for this southern girl! The lamb chops were a favorite as well as the spaghetti. The steak was delicious as well. It was so reasonably priced, which was unexpected in that area. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation and treat yourself to this fabulous restaurant!
This place was incredible. The pasta was extremely fresh, the sauces were very flavorful. We had the spinach gnocchi and the ravioli. Definitely get one of the house wines, we got the sangiovese and did not regret it. 1 item of note though, it is cash only, so make sure you have enough. Great service, great food, classic Italian vibe. Would definitely visit again!
On a stormy Sunday, the food and the vibes kept us nice and warm. Thank you to Malatesta Trattoria for the welcoming experience and great food!
Favourite West Village spot during summer. Homemade pasta. Best Piadina in the city. Great salads. Street side/outside seating. Friendly and accommodating staff. Dog friendly in the outside seats. What more could you want?! There will likely be a wait unless you’re a 5pm arrival. It’s cash only but they have an atm on site for a small fee ($1.50 from memory).
Fortunately we did not run into most of the issues mentioned in other reviews (rubbery calamari and snarky servers) other than the bread was not hot — which I personally was fine with. Everything was great, especially the penne and tiramisu + cappuccino (best cappuccino I’ve ever had at restaurant). Penne was extremely hot, super fresh ingredients, and made me want to scarf down the whole plate as quickly as possible. We had the funghi to start as well, which was great. The servers we interacted with were all fine. Around $80 for 1 app, 2 mains, 1 glass of wine, 1 dessert, 1 coffee.
Our favorite Italian place in the village. We use to eat here quite often when we did not have kids. Parking is a bit tricky as most areas in the city. We came on a busy saturday night and the place was packed, we were informed that wait time was 1 hour ( call ahead of time for reservation) but there was no wait at their outdoor dinning so we opted for that. The food came right away even with the place overflowing with customers shows that they are competent and always ahead of the curve. Wait staff was helpful in explaining items on the menu and are courteous. The food in my opinion was worth the price, average price of pasta was $16 but the ingredients were fresh and they all taste delicious. We had the Calamari for starters and it was the best! Cooked just right. (Not fried but, more like grilled whole squid) we ordered 2 appetizers 4 Entréés and all came in less than 10 mins. Would definetly recomend this place.
this is a must go in the city. we went around 8pm on a saturday night. walk-in’s only so that was risky but it was perfect timing. we got the octopus, watermelon salad, ravioli with rose sauce and tagliatelle with ragu sauce. everything was fantastic. so so flavourful and fresh. we finished the meal with chocolate mousse and paired the meal with the sauvignon blanc. such an affordable meal for such high quality. one of my top italian spots.
Fantastic food, great service in a cozy space in the West Village. If you’re willing to take a modest walk from the 1 train it is absolutely worth it. The pasta here is fantastic.
I've only eaten two amazing true Italian dinners outside of Italy in my life, and this is without a doubt one of them. Mouth watering gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce, nicely cooked mussels, and not-too-obnoxious service. Ragu was better than ones I've sampled in Italy. That was our final meal in New York, and it was certainly memorable. Simple, cozy, and unpretentious - exactly how I prefer my eating experiences.
Absolutely no notes. What a magical little place. So so so special. And a very sweet waiter with a gorgeous Italian accent :,) We stumbled upon this place by accident and I’m so happy that we did. Thank you all for a truly wonderful experience <3
GO HERE. The food is outstanding. The atmosphere is calm and casual with indoor and outdoor seating. The spinach gnocchi is so good I had to close my eyes with every bite. It completely negated the annoyance associated with the restaurant being cash only. 5/5, 10/10 would recommend and will most definitely be back!
One of my favorite spots in the city to take guests because it’s good, old school Italian with a good, lovely atmosphere. And they take credit cards now!! Good, solid Italian. And the staff is always working hard and is so friendly. I often call for reservations Mon/Tues before the weekend and can usually secure a good time. They’ll often call that day to confirm the reservation Slightly squished and a little loud for older crowds but great for groups and dinner w/ friends. The chicken cutlet is lightly breaded and DREAMY! Burrata was a good portion. Also love any of their pastas and that they serve yummy focaccia pieces ahead of the meal
Best spinach gnocchi in Gorgonzola sauce EVER. Order that for the table or for yourself but don't leave without it! Don't forget it's CASH ONLY, and expect a wait if it's a weekend evening because there are no reservations for small groups. Go in the spring or summer and sit outside, get a carafe of house wine and an appetizer. Affordable, efficient, kind staff, incredible homemade pastas. Gets pretty loud because they pack out every inch of the small space. Update April 2018: Highly recommend the burrata over prosciutto and arugula if it’s on the specials menu. The tagliatelle with beef ragu is also fantastic.
It’s such a comfortable and relaxing place. The food is absolutely delicious and full of flavor. I’ll definitely be coming back again.
Delicious and affordable Italian restaurant in the west village. Loved the house focaccia bread that was served when we first sat at our table. It was so light and fluffy, and extra good with there olive oil and balsamic. They didn’t have a full bar, but there was a good selection of Italian wines and beers. I ordered the fish special, which came over fennel with a side of asparagus. The presentation, quality, and taste was excellent. The pasta dishes looked amazing. Would definitely recommend Malatesta Trattoria.
The food here is fantastic. I'm by no means an expert on Italian food, but the food here reminds me my experience with Italian food in Italy. If you come here, it may spoil your experience with any other Italian restaurant in NYC. Service is fast and items on menu are moderately priced. This place is a must try again, and again, and again.
I quite enjoyed visiting this restaurant. The food is good, especially considering the most reasonable prices. I had spaghetti and it was delicious! And less than $10 I think! Can’t beat that in NYC. The place is small and has a neighborhood feel, which is contributed to by the staff, who treat everyone like you are eating in their home. Would definitely go back.
Came back recently for a birthday gathering and the food was as delicious as always, service was supreme and fantastic atmosphere yet again. They now take credit cards which is very helpful. This place is so popular and it's easy to see why. Enjoy This is a great authentic Italian restaurant. Windows all around this corner restaurant. Wooden tables, mood lighting set the atmosphere. Friendly personable service who don't rush you at any time. The food melts in your mouth, the spinach gnocchi is just perfection. Literally melts like butter in your mouth. Salad, wine and tiramisu were delicious. Reasonably priced for the area. So good, bring a date, bring a friend, bring yourself, you must visit this restaurant.
A gem you can nearly always get a walk in or reservation for in the west village at any hour with high quality italian eats. Their homemade pasta is divine but don’t sleep on the salads!! You can’t beat the spinach gnocchi with Gorgonzola
I’ve seen this place for years now and always wanted to go! I’m so thrilled it’s still around. 🙏 The food is delicious and the prices super reasonable for the area. The vibe is that good old NYC vibe that has been lost in lots of places in the village, so I’m double thrilled it’s still around and not super overpriced! Can absolutely recommend and will most definitely return!
Absolutely delicious food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our table enjoyed several pastas, the lamb chops, and some desserts, and all were phenomenal!
Made dinner reservations and we got an amazing family style table in this really amazing, rustic looking, happy vibes place! Noise levels were on the higher end and you had to speak loudly to hear the other person across the table! José our server was friendly, attentive, and quick with his service. This is a very kid friendly place - so highly recommended for families with kids. At the same time, a great place for date night too. An extremely well priced menu, with great options is how I'd describe their menu. Our order consisted of Crostini Misti ($10.50), Calamari ($18), Funghi di Prato ($12.50) - an excellent mushroom salad, for appetizers. Mains included a very tasty (and slightly cheesy) Spinach Gnocchi ($18.50), Penne Arrabiata ($16), and Tagliatelle al Ragu ($18). Kids thoroughly enjoyed their butter pasta which they polished within a few mins! Overall, we had a great time at this place, and I can clearly see Malatesta become our go-to Italian dinner place on weekdays or weekends. Great service, excellent quality food, and a very well priced menu! Can't ask for more.
If I could give 10* for this Restaurant, it would be great! Very cozy and nice ambient, the staf is great, really friendly and helpful, and the food - top of the tops! Everything what we ate was super delicious! We had a reservation, so we didn't wait at all. Overall, this Restaurant is really worth visiting!
This was our second time visiting Malatesta and it is still exceptional! Food is gourmet and delicious, service is friendly and attentive, and prices are reasonable. Our first time here was in 2021 - we spontaneously chose it for dinner as we were visiting the west village and got hungry while exploring. We had such a memorable experience that we made it a priority to come again in 2025 with our whole family. Same quality and service! We showed up at 5:20 on a Sunday with a party of 5 and got seated right away. I’m both gluten intolerant and egg intolerant and found plenty of options in the menu with the guidance of our waiter. Each dish came out hot and everyone loved the culinary experience! (The grilled calamari appetizer is amazing!) Highly recommend Malatesta and can’t wait to come back again when we visit NYC!
this is the one of the best meals I’ve had in new york city - I got the tagliatelle ragu (with their homemade pasta), my mom got the apple salad and we shared orders of mussels and tiramisu. all of it blew my mind. my dish was so warm and flavorful, the tiramisu was the best I’ve ever had and the mussels were cooked perfectly in that wine and tomato sauce. the only thing I didn’t love was their bread but it was still pretty good!
Amazing food ! Price and location are great! Definitely would recommend this place ! I ordered few starters fungi di Prato ( arugula and mushrooms, would not recommend)and Panzanella (watermelon salad) I would recommend Panzanella , for main I ordered spinach gnocchi (it was too salty) but was tasty ! My favorite was dessert! I ordered Panna Cotta ! My advice for management of the place is to be more present on the floor and help to your team at conflict situations ! I think it’s extremely hostile work environment! The restaurant needs to hire HR or work with team more and explain that bullying colleagues is not right way to solve the problem! And management should know what going on and stop the conflict instead of watching it from the host stand .
Cosy Italian restaurant near the Hudson that offers great value wine carafes and a lot of classic options such as grilled calamari and caprese salads which are decent. Spinach gnocchi is definitely a must order for your first time. Tables are on the smaller side so you may want to manage your orders. Overall good spot to check out!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unfussy and perfect Italian. Great vibes, great price. 🍝 Variety of homemade pastas. I recommend the spinach gnocchi in Gorgonzola. 🥂Fun, intimate, NYC atmosphere. If it’s warm, sit outside! 🍰The tiramisu portions are generous! Most popular item on the dessert menu. The chocolate mousse is also a winner. 🧾Service was slow the night I visited. Maybe they were short staffed. I’m not holding it against them. But don’t expect a fast in-and-out.
Fantastic, reliable Italian spot. Have been several times over the years and it’s always a great meal and experience. Service can be slightly slow but it’s no reason not to go. Never had to wait very long for a table, even with a larger group. The spinach gnocchi is my go-to, once there was a squid ink pasta special that was also incredible!
Solid neighborhood go-to! Consistently great food and atmosphere. If you have the right mindset going in, you'll be satisfied at Malatesta! It won't totally knock your socks off but it's also not priced as if it will. Prepare for solid Italian food at an amazing price and you will not be disappointed!!
Food was great. I got the ravioli, spinach gnocchi and Lambrusco to drink.
Food was good and served fast, but there were some notable misses with the service. The hostess put my name down for a party of 2, and said the table should be ready in 30 minutes. I go around the block then arrive at that spot 20 minutes later, expecting to have maintained my spot in the queue. However, I learned that my spot had been given up because I wasn’t in eyesight of the hostess. Basically, I had to stand in a hot, cramp room for 30 minutes continuously to get seated. Eventually we were seated but this was very unusual and left a bad impression on us. The servers also didn’t give us olive oil and balsamic, unlike the other tables. And when we did get them, they were quickly whisked away from our table, no questions asked, even though we were still using them. It’s a good restaurant food-wise, and it would have been 5 stars had it not been for the subpar customer service.
Nice terrace on a quiet street, perfect for a romantic summer dinner. Can be pretty loud inside though. The pasta plates are simple and comforting. Their appetizers are good and cheap. I liked their assortment of bruschetta. Their burrata was yummy! Service is busy but friendly. Their (free) table bread was too salty and one slice was soggy.
Spinach Gnocchi is top notch. Desserts could be better. Could give some birthday treats too.
This place is always great.. The red gravy is amazing always...eat a nice plate of pasta with a glass of red and your evening is complete. I had to pull a star from this review because the pasta was very much undercooked and quite hard. How much of a selection of vegetable or seafood dishes tonight.... Worth the wait!
Very crowded place, the ambience was noisy but cozy. I'm not a huge fan of Italian food in the first place but my friend is vegetarian and really likes the penne from here. I got the tagliatelle ragu which was $18. The portions were a little small, they gave us some bread to snack on before the food came out which was nice. The complimentary bread was a little soggy (maybe from the rain, this establishment is pretty open which is nice). The waiters were all very nice and the food came out in a timely manner even though it was crowded. I wouldn't say it's my favorite but the pasta was a nice texture, there just wasn't an incredible flavor to it and the portions were smaller than I was expecting. Fun place, not for me, but maybe for someone else!
This is a real italian restaurant with a good selection of Italian products and recipes. The location is great, northwest of Manhattan. There’re seats inside and outside. We got Pasta with mushrooms, a Piadina ( a very traditional Italian dish) and a chocolate mousse. Everything was great. The prices are okay to be in downtown New York. The staff is really nice and polite
This was our fourth time dining at this restaurant, and we’ve always enjoyed the great food and atmosphere. Last night, we brought my niece and her boyfriend to share the experience and had a lovely dinner with wine. However, after being there for a little over an hour, we were asked to finish up because the next reservation had arrived. While we completely understand how busy the restaurant can get, the request felt a bit rushed and took away from what was otherwise a wonderful evening. We hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future guests, as we truly do enjoy coming here.
A lovely spot in the West Village - with lovely pasta and a top tier atmosphere. Some small issues - not being able to reserve a table for two people (walk-ins only for that table size) and the bread they gave us was a bit stale. I liked that they split the one pasta we ordered over two plates - a sweet touch!
Food here was good but not the best I've ever had. The calamari and red sauce specifically were EXCELLENT. So excellent a friend drank the rest of the red sauce that came with our shared meatballs. Burrata was tasty especially with the saltiness of the prosciutto but nothing life-changing. My gnocchi with red sauce was delicious, specifically due to the red sauce. The gnocchi itself was light and fluffy as well. As for everyone else's dishes, I heard the spinach gnocchi with cream sauce was a bit too heavy, and the ravioli was good but nothing super special. We did not enjoy the flatbread (?) special which was like a prosciutto and arugula tortilla sandwich. Overall would recommend this place if you're looking for good red sauce and amazing calamari and to curb your Italian cravings, but not all dishes may completely hit the spot.
A group of us went there for lunch. Calamari was tasty and was a bit over cooked, little chewy for appetizer. We also had mussels, Burrata and Prosciutto, and others. For main, my spaghetti was okay. Not much seasoning or taste. I’ve tasted better spaghetti elsewhere. On the other hand, I also tried other dishes of others in the party. They all tasted better. Worth revisiting when in NY City again.
This was OK. perhaps an off day but service was very slow. Took awhile to get our orders in, get our food, get dessert, get the check, etc. I could tell the pasta was home made - i ordered the tagliatelle. It was a bit lacking in flavor. The dessert was delicious (tiramisu and chocolate mousse). I wouldn’t say this was a “wow” for me overall. Docked two stars for the slow service and just overall average plates. If you want decent Italian at a good price point in the WV this is a solid option.
The Tagliatelle Ragu was fantastic! There’s no A/C and it was a little hot, but still a great vibe. The service was a bit awkward - they checked in too frequently and tried clearing unfinished dishes. No dedicated staff serve your table; they rotate and come as needed, which felt a bit all over the place.
The food was good and tasty. Staff wasn’t friendly , I felt like everyone was too busy, to take care of you, they just dropping meals on table not even telling what is what. And when we were eating, waiters took our cup with Parmesan and just put it on another table didn’t even ask us were we done or not? Or how can you take something from other table and put to another table, he didn’t even change spoon which we were using, and this during pandemic, now I’m not even sure if we were first one who ate from that cup, how could you be sure costumer didn’t put there dirty spoon back. If you wanna get in you need to wait like 20 min.
Was an ok meal. I love supporting local businesses but the respect should come on both sides. If you want people to pay money for your food and tip you need to be able to provide a basic dining experience. For example: the bread was ice cold. The restaurant was freezing. I get it tough times that’s why I’m leaving 3 stars. The food was okay. Pink sauce is more like milk sauce. Grilled calamari was rubber. We ate and left so fast. As I was leaving the manager and another waiter were making fun of customers and their requests I thought that was unprofessional and childish. Not a place I want to go back
Overall ok experience here. Food was decent (nothing mind blowing) and for under $40 can’t complain. Food did come out quickly and was hot. Only real downside was waiter took forever to come to table initially and then didn’t seem to interested in talking, just taking my order, which is fine but it was an overall disinterest in even interacting with customers. Probably a good Friday night date spot.
This felt like a scam. Food was completely flavorless. From appetizer to main, completely disappointing. Waiter was MIA to the point that we thought of leaving. NY is an Italian- American city. Do yourself a favor and go to literally any other place in the city that will do better.
The ONLY good thing about this restaurant is the vibe and atmosphere. The service is terribly slow and rude, the food is AWFUL. I got the penne arrabiata and my sister got the ravioli. The food came out within 2 mins of us ordering which is the first bad sign. My sauce tasted like it was from a can and I’ve been sick since last night. Save your $$$ and skip.
The food was barely good, the Tagliateli Ragu is not good since it does not feel like a restaurant, it tastes like if i made it at home. The restaurant was way to noisy and had to wait like 20 minutes past my reservation time. Definitely would not recommend. The calamari were okay, such as the burrata but nothing spectacular. The best dish were the gnocchi, but not worth going there inly for that plate. The wine bottles are also expensive compared to what they’re worth. (5x their price)
My wife and I had the spinach gnocchi and gnocchi de patate. Both meals were really bad. I've never had an objectively bad plate in my years in NYC, but I could not finish it. It was terrible. Complete waste of money. Atmosphere was cozy and a classic restaurant style in the village.
Horrible service. They don’t even speak to you you can’t get anyone’s attention they’re all just talking to each other. And worst of all they committed fraud my illegally adjusting the tip amount on my credit card. I will be submitting a complaint to the BBB. ***Edit*** this was not a party of 6 it was a party of 3 and the waiter changed the tip o that I wrote and gave himself an extra $20 tip
We were waiting for a table for about 10 minutes when a group of three arrived. They seemed to know the owner, and were seated right away, ahead of us. It was disappointing to see this kind of preferential treatment, especially when we had been waiting patiently. The food wasn’t that good.
This is the most odd restaurant I have ever been to. I have been here many times, and the service has always been bad; the vast majority of the workers are rude and have no personality at all. I like the pasta, so I’ve always accepted this just to eat the food. Well, today I came in, someone barley gave me the time of day and in a rush said, “sit anywhere where there’s a table for two. Strange as they didn’t even walk me to a table like a normal restaurant would do. I ordered a salad and pasta. The salad had barely any cheese whatsoever. I asked if I could have extra cheese and told the waiter that there was hardly any in it. They brought out extra. Fast forward to the check: they decided to charge me $1.75 extra. I brought it up to the waiter, and he spoke to a lady about it. She came to me, just looked at me, and barely said anything. I started to explain to her that I was charged extra, but I only asked because there was barely any cheese to begin with, and the server never mentioned I would be charged extra after I asked and told him this. SHE STARTED ARGUING FROM THE JUMP AND THEN IN SUCH A RUDE ATTITUDE SAID, "Well, you're the one that decided to order something extra." I replied, "Because there was barely any cheese." She then proceeded to tell me that that is the normal amount—which would be a joke if it's true. After she was rude, I told her I would just take the extra money out of the tip and would never come back after this. She proceeded to bring my card back, didn't take the amount off, and just put the check on the table without saying a word to me. Extremely rude people here; it is very odd for a restaurant like this to charge $1.75 for cheese. All in all, it was just about the principle of being charged. I won't be back, and you lost a loyal customer over nickel-and-diming him.
