Second visit and WOW- still blown away. The flavors are bold, rich, and unforgettable. That sourdough is the perfect base for the melt-in-your-mouth beef, especially when loaded with the tangy vinegar slaw, hot peppers, and dunked in jus. Don’t skip the freshly made lemonade—it ties everything together. I’ll 100% be back. Tip: play hooky, go during the week when they’re open to avoid long waits and enjoy the chill, fun vibes. Some people say it’s pricey, but when you only sell one item and do it this well—on prime real estate—it’s worth it. Born-and-raised New Yorker approved. 10/10
The best french dip I have ever had. Each ingredient is so well thought out and expertly made. Nice to see the owner working and taking pride in his food. The girl in the front who seats you and takes care of the line is a true gem! She controls the chaos well so everything runs smooth. This was a top highlight of our trip to New York!
A great spot for a French dip. Cooked to perfection with the perfect spiced au jus. I devoured my sandwich. I personally would like real French fries, but others might think it would be too filling. The thin potatoes are a nice touch, but not amazing. Line moved rather quickly, if you do to takeout you move along faster on the line, since they ask you if your staying or going.
The moment we arrived was a line to enter but the waiting was fast !! I highly recommend this restaurant very unique I think the menu change but the flavor on the food is delicious is a total experience for me I’m tourist and I love also a hole in a wall !! Thanks for the great service and experience and the staff omg the person that pass us on the door make us feel so welcoming and the register guy was so cool also we spoke in Spanish thank you Also was a lady very kindly and taking care of everything
Came for the soft opening, at the time, the only sandwich on offer was the French dip. The sandwich was *phenomenal* and I’m not even a big French dip guy. Everything from the baguette to the Au Jus was outstanding. Definitely recommend splitting a sandwich. With fries and a drink it came out to $38. Quality is clearly high but hopefully they’ll have some lower priced offerings down the line. The fries were a little unusual on their own but made a great sandwich topping, and maybe that was their intended purpose. Some little touches I appreciated were the DIY takeaway station and the fact that they limited the number of customers inside so it never felt overly crowded or chaotic. And it’s always great to go to a place that actually makes you feel welcome. Looking forward to coming back!
All I can say is WOW! Finally was able to indulge into the viral French Dip sandwich and it did not disappoint. Amazing flavor packed, juicy and delicious. I even drank the juice. Yeah it was that good. Make sure to get there early if you want to dine out. I took mines to go and it was absolutely fine on the go.
The French dip was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. The bread was well toasted and crunchy, the cheese was perfectly melted. And the meat was tender, juicy, and almost melted in my mouth. The accompanying au jous was flavorful and really helped soften the bread. The sandwich was definitely worth the hour wait, however the fries were very thin and not worth it. I would travel for this sandwich
I went to Salt Hanks and had the first French Dip in my life. It was delicious. I never wanted to try one because I don’t like soggy bread. This bread is crispy and can withstand a dunk in the jus. It maintains a crunch and is perfect. Personally, I’m not a fan of the fries. I know everyone has an opinion and I prefer a thicker cut. We arrived at 11:15 AM and waited for about one hour, 15 minutes. It’s expensive. But, a sandwich can easily feed 2 for lunch.
I didn’t want to give Salt Hank’s five stars but I had to. I’ll get it out of the way: yes, $45 for a sandwich, fries and drink is absurd, even for NYC standards. But then the food comes: a flavor bomb of incredibly high quality prime rib, perfectly caramelized onions, fresh baguette, and fatty provolone cheese. Combine with matchstick fries and their homemade limeade and you have a guaranteed Ratatouille moment. Staff was kind as could be, space is comfy and no frills, Salt Hank was there and doing hard work like everyone else. Highly recommend on a fall day.
For all the whiny peasants complaining about a $45 sandwich, fries, and limeade… I feel you. I, too, am broke, and that price does indeed not slap. But such is the toll of a trendy mangia moment in Manhattan these days. Still, the sandwich melted in my mouth almost as fast as my initial regrets. The jus, fries, and limeade in concert went down like a salve and quieted my inner accountant. No post-munch-clarity here - it was worth the price of admission. The space is simple and old-school, the staff upbeat and inviting. If you can stomach the cost (and the Instagram-induced line), Salt Hank delivers.
The wait is worth it. It's like eating a French onion soup with your fingers and I mean this as high praise. The sandwich is very sloppy in the best way, the rib melts in your mouth and the onions are super flavorful. One sandwich is enough food for two people, or you'll be ready to take a nap after eating. My one complaint is that the fries are a little too thin and crispy for my taste, but that's a minor ding.
Salt Hank is SO sweet and SO wholesome. The portions are huge. It’s a bit on the pricier side for a sandwich, but you understand why after the first bite. Every ingredient is a 10/10. It’s super filling (we shared 1 sandwich between 2 people and it was perfect) The staff is also really sweet. Wait time to get inside the restaurant was ~35 minutes but the service is super quick once ure in. (Put the fries in the sandwich)
After reading reviews about this place, I was on the fence. But now that I’ve been, 2 takeaways: try to go at a quieter time and eat the sandwich there instead of taking to-go. I happened to walk by it on Wednesday around 1:30 and there was no line, so I decided to just go for it. The French dip is outstanding. Incredible. Perfect for how stupid cold it’s been recently. It’s pretty obvious to me that the unfavorable reviews on here are due to the long wait times + the fact that this sandwich is probably no where near as good if you get it to go as it mushes up from the ingredients.
Reaaaaallllly good French dip sandwich served with au jus. “Shoestring fries” are really just crsipy toppings for the sandwich. I bought two orders, which cost nearly $90. The sandwiches should be priced lower and come with the fries for topping. Truly an excellent sandwich (absolutely 5 stars), but the wait (outside in the snow to get in, then back outside waiting on a to go order; they do have a god line system where they fill the restaurant, then expedite to go orderers) and the extreme cost are probably not worth it for more than one visit.
There's a lot of hype but it's well deserved! When you bit into the sandwich, the first thing you notice is how soft and crispy the bread is, just like a proper sourdough baguette should be. Then you start tasting the delicious, thinly thinly sliced prime rib with caramelized onions and horseradish-garlic aioli. You'll also taste some nice chewy bits of provolone. At this point you think, wow, this is a good sandwich but you also have to try the warm jus which also has a ton of flavor. Damn, it actually makes it better. I was impressed and will be back!
I don’t know if I can think of a better sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. Soft bread that holds structure while the juices run down your arm, tender prime rib, and the most delicious caramelized onions that compliments the sandwich so well. I could drink the au jus by itself by the gallon it was so good. Absolutely worth the wait. Just wish I got there sooner so I could try the fries. Can’t wait to go again.
The most amazing sandwich ever. The line is extremely long. An hour before they actually open. It's very much get in, eat your food and get out kind of place. Absolutely worth it. It's kind of expensive cuz it's over $30 for a sandwich without fries and a drink but it's amazing. It's very much this is what may make and this is what you get without any customizations so just eat it and enjoy
This amazing sandwich shop in the West Village has created one of the most viral and delicious sandwiches in NYC PERIOD!!! THE FRENCH DIP SANDWICH WITH THE SIDE OF AU JUS is causing all the hysteria with great cause. Its a one of a kind in flavor. Expect some long lines, but it moves pretty quickly depending on the day and time. The staff is very friendly and the vibe is friendly also. Thanks for a great moment. I will definitely be back.
Got there at 11 to try and make sure we got a spot. By 1130 there was pretty long line but we were able to get seated still and get our sandwiches pretty quickly. Amazing sandwich, between the bread, the aioli, the 7 hour caramelized onions, the au jus, this hit on every single level. The fries were a bit hard to hold is my only complaint when trying to eat a bunch of them but the flavor was great. Super crispy and paired perfect with the sandwich. They also had some hot/ sweet peppers that gave the sandwich some nice acidity and worked perfectly. Would definitely come back!
A popular, hyped sandwich spot serving beef dips daily and chicken parm dips on Wednesday. Both sandwiches are great, and while they might be more expensive than you’d expect, they’re delicious and very well made. A lot of care and attention goes into these sandwiches and they’re about as good as it gets - real quality. The bread is incredible, flavorful, crunchy, robust and able to carry both ingredients and sauce. Both the chicken and beef are high quality, juicy and fresh. If you are prepared to wait in line a bit, it’s an excellent sandwich you’ll remember for a long time. Note that the line seems to die down after 2pm lunch rush according to staff, so might be a bit easier to snag at that point!
Salt Hank’s pop-up was an absolute treat! The moment I arrived, the energy was buzzing and the line moved faster than expected. His signature sandwich was massive — stacked with juicy meat, perfectly toasted bread, and that signature sauce he’s famous for on TikTok. You can really taste the attention to detail and the balance of flavors. It’s comfort food done with chef-level technique. The staff was friendly and the operation surprisingly organized for a pop-up. Prices are a bit on the higher side, but the portion size definitely matches. Overall, it felt like eating a viral video in real life — big flavors, bold personality, and truly satisfying. If you’re a fan of his online content, this experience brings it to life. Definitely worth the hype!
Best French dip of my life, and a top 10 sando, and I’m not just saying that as a fan of Salt Hank’s social media feed. Every ingredient and preparation has been iterated to perfection, and it both looks and tastes like it. Luckily I only had to wait in line 30 min, which was chill for a Friday while not working. Even had the pleasure of watching some NIMBY lady lambaste the whole line on how we were breaking ADA code and the restaurant wasn’t up to code blah blah. Added to the experience tbh, and was a great way to spend my lunch hour on Friday during my visit to NYC. The fries are unique and a great accompaniment to the sandwich, but not necessary. Do yourself a favor and sip that au jus by itself though. Probably the most depth of flavor I’ve ever had in a dip for a sandwich. All in all, it’s a pretty pricey lunch combo, so not an every day or even every week endeavor, but definitely worth the wait. I would return with friends if I’m in the area again.

So the wait did take a while. BUT the food was truly amazing!! I actually think it was one of the best sandwiches. If you got time and want a good bite. I would go!

So this place has 1 thing a french dip and fries. The fries tasted good but are basically just potato sticks you can get at the grocery store. Not really fries but chips. Wouldnt get them again. The sandwhich is good but not $30 good. I also dont understand why they dont do modifications to remove the cheese. I just dont like it but seems like an easy change and could be a bigger deal for people with lactose intolerance. The sandwhich was kind of 1 note. Good flavor but got boring
For a place that quite literally only serves one thing, they've mastered it well. My sandwich in particular was a bit raw for my taste but I also know most people prefer their prime rib that way so I'm in the minority there. Even with the raw it was perfectly cooked and so buttery. The bread was nicely toasted without cutting the roof of my mouth and the aju dip was so savory without being overly salty. I am a HUGE fan of the fries, which are mote like crispy stick chips than a "fry" but I lived for them! They offer a fresh squeezed limeade drink and it was very tart and definitely refreshing. As they only serve one item it's a pretty quick stop even with the line out the door from all the tik tokers.. it's a bit pricey for a sandwich and fries but in my opinion one combo serves two people and the quality of ingredients tastes very worth it.
When I visited on a weekend morning about 15 minutes before opening time (11:30am), there was already a line down the block. The wait was about 40ish minutes (for dine in). The hostess was on top of remembering who was in line for takeout and who wanted to dine in. There was no separate line, you just had to wait for the hostess to get to you. I was going to dine in and was given a ticket to confirm that I had been waiting in line. There was table seating for larger groups and counter style seating by the front and rear of the place. The french dip sandwich is definitely on the pricier side (price has gone up a bit since they first opened). I got the french dip by itself to see what the hype was about as it had been all over my feed. The baguette was crispy and lathered in a rich garlic chive butter while the roast beef was very smoky in flavor and paired well with the sweetness of the caramelized onions. The provolone cheese also was a nice addition to the sandwich. There was also horseradish aioli (according to the menu) but I didn't taste it too much as the roast beef was the main star. I think adding a vegetable to cut through the heaviness of the sandwich would be nice or maybe offer it as a side. For the price, it is quite a large sandwich and definitely shareable. They had a pack to go station by the kitchen in case you decided to take your food to go. Eating this got quite messy so luckily there was a bathroom in the back to wash my hands afterwards!
Got the combo with the limeade upgrade, total $44. Limeade was refreshing and tart. Had more ice than I'd like. Fries reminded me of potato stix, thin crunchy. The French dip sandwich was good. It's a bit small maybe 10 inch and towards the ends of the sandwich, the beef filling was much less. The bread was great and the aus jus was good. Overall a good sandwich but pricey. I'd give it a 8/10.
Salt Hank’s is the spot for prime rib french dip in the west village. the place is always packed with long line out the door. but i was luck enough to have waited only 5-10 min on a Sunday afternoon 🫶🏻 there is only 1 menu—french dip with dry-aged prime rib, caramelized onion ($32). you need to tell them how many sandwiches you want and your preferred drinks. you can add the shoestring fries 🍟 but it was sold out when i was there. the prime rib is super tender and literally melting in the mouth 🥩 this is what got me sold completely. the baguette is crispy and crunchy. the sandwich itself is perfect without the dipping. but the dipping sauce helps soften the bread a bit. personally, i think it is a bit too pricey for a sandwich. it was worth a try but it may not be worth it to wait more than half an hour for it.
Great French dip sandwich!! We had to wait maybe 30min to get inside (we sat on high tables tables facing the wall, not the best seating possible, but that’s beside the point), and the staff was very kind and energetic. They do not accept any changes on the sandwich, and I am glad, because I’m usually picky and ask to remove ingredients but the sandwich is great as it is! The bread is good, the meat is great, the fries add an extra crunchiness, and the French dip is the cherry on top. It’s expensive, but one sandwich can easily feed two people, we shared one and we were just fine. Would totally repeat the experience.
The line was crazy around the corner the other day 10 min after opening, was able to luck out today during the rain. Also was given a ticket and skipped right ahead to the counter for takeout. The smell inside was wonderful. The menu was tiny, just the french dip $34, shoestring fried $6 and lemonade. The fries didn't quite make it home😅 crispy handfulls all the way on the subway. French dip sandwich is massive, moist and tender with the salty savory au jus, though not sure if it's worth the price tag.
Delicious. The bread was the first thing I noticed. Extra crunchy and crispy. Perfect medium for dipping. The meat was tender and well seasoned. I would also say this leaned salty. The fries are chips let’s be honest. I thought they added a yummy crunch but will probably skip on my next visit. The limeade was cool, but can’t see myself getting it again. Really sweet (but I’m told I like lightly sweetened water so do with that what you will).
The real question, is the wait worth it? As a New Yorker… NO! I would rather grab a French dip at Au Cheval for a short wait for a lunch reso and a larger menu choice. However I will give the credit to a great French Dip with a delicious Au Ju. The string fries are great for the memories of the UTZ Potato Stix. Definitely worth the try. You won’t be disappointed. But down the block is a true NYC gem for italian subs. Check Google Maps to figure it out.
Salt Hank’s 280 Bleecker St. New York, NY 10014 French Dip Combo: French Dip Shoestring Fries Can of Brooklyn Peach Tea Located in the west village directly off the five corner intersection is a restaurant that sells primarily french dip sandwiches. These specialty sandwiches are so popular that there will always be a wait to place an order. Here is the meal I explored from this limited menu. French Dip Combo: This combo includes the french dip, shoestring fries, and can of Brooklyn tea. On a constructive note, I wasn’t too fond of the appearance, especially with the shoestring fries just sloppily thrown onto the plate. As soon as I took my first bite, the appearance didn’t matter because this signature sandwich was phenomenal. The thinly sliced prime rib was packed tight and was topped with melted provolone cheese on a toasted sourdough baguette smothered in garlic aioli. And no french dip is ever complete without a cup of au jus. The shoestring fries were very skinny and crispy. They had a texture identical to potato chips. Have a spoonful or handful; the choice is yours. All of this goodness was washed down with a refreshing ice cold can of Brooklyn Peach Tea. If you wish to take home any memorabilia, feel free to purchase souvenirs from the gift shop, in particular a Salt Hank’s cookbook featuring the recipe for the signature sandwich. The restaurant is only open four days per week, so please plan accordingly. Although I may have disliked the presentation, I truly loved this specialty signature sandwich. #westvillage #salthanks #bleeckerstreet #frenchdip #frenchdipsandwich #frenchdipcombo #shoestringfries #brooklynpeach #peachtea
My Thoughts: 1. Limeade: tastes freshly squeezed. Not too tart. B- 2. French Dip: fatty beef, too strong a Worchestershire flavor. Wish they had a plain version. Overrated. C-. The bread however, A! 3. Shoestring Fries: not my definition of shoestring fries. They're more like french fried onions texture or burnt Waffle House hashbrowns. F. D, if soaked in Au Jus. Au Jus saturation made them more ramen-like. 4. Sweet & Spicy Pepper Medley: kimchi vibes. C. My Restaurant Report Card: D. F: Not Good. Never Return. D: Good, but One and Done. C: Would Return to Try Other Items, Second Chance. B: Would Return and Get Same Items Again. A: So Impressed, Would Bring Out of Towners Here.
Good French dip, but at $40 & 30 mins in line the expectations are high and, for me, it didn’t quite meet them. I’ve had better versions for half the price. Fries were already sold out at 2pm, which was a bit disappointing. That said, the service was very friendly, and I don’t regret giving it a try.
The French dip from this viral hotspot. It was delicious. If you want to be hungry for dinner, I recommend sharing one sandwich between two people. The bread was perfectly crispy for dipping and the meat was juicy. I will say it is pricy and we did have to wait for 40 minutes in line - but I still think it’s worth trying at least once.
Went right before closing and was able to get a seat in about 15 minutes. Overall the sandwich is solid (have to caveat this is my first time having a French Dip sandwich), and I would come back. If you come too late you run the risk of them running out of sandwiches and sides. Once seated it took two min to get the sandwich. Would definitely recommend and would return.
All around solid, just with a pretty hefty price tag. If a sandwhich already came with the fries, this would have made it 5 stars (more worth it) Tip: The line to "takeaway" moves faster than for dine in, however this is not always apparent as there is only one line. Wish the attendant organizing the line told us sooner when we were at the back of the line so we could just help ourselves to the takeaway counter faster.

Wish the attendant organizing the line told us sooner when we were at the back of the line so we could just help ourselves to the takeaway counter faster.
I was super excited to try the vital French Dip and it fell flat for me. Super salty IMHO and the bread was of course very crunchy & toasted because it still has to hold shape after dipping into the onion soup. At $34, it's a very pricey sandwich that did not live up to the hype for me. Try it out and judge for yourself. Very small dining area and there are some reserved tables that you can book to avoid the line.
$34 for sando $6 for fries As a combo $1 for the limeade came on Sunday in line by 10:55, four groups ahead of me, ordered and got seated 11:15. FYI you can order on grubhub to takeout and there are reservations on openable now. Service was great and food was good. I wouldn’t come back if I have to wait though and I didn’t think it was $34 good
Okay.. the review I've been waiting to write. First I'm rating it a 3.8. Good overall experience, but not excellent. I've patiently waited for the hype to die down to try this sandwich. I too am a follower of Salt Hank and have dreamt of tasting one of his creations. So bare with me as I roll it out. I arrived midweek hoping to avoid the line, but I had to wait outside for someone to let me in to place an order. Once inside, i was a directed to a cashier who took my order. She wasn't the friendliest. And though, it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth, but for the cost of the food, she should have been all smiles. I ordered the combo with a lemonade, which came up to $51.17. Ridiculously too pricey for a sandwich combo. The combo included the sandwich, a lemonade which was extra (not worth it to me), chips (shoestring fries), extra au jus (extra cost). For what is a noteworthy mention, I traveled 1-hour home to NJ before I ate the sandwich. It didn't travel well unfortunately. A bit on the soggy side, but that's my fault. The sandwich itself has a lot of flavors going on. Just a bit too complicated for my liking. It had good meat proportions and cheese. It was also on the salty side. The au jus was rich, liquid sodium. And someone in the reviews mentioning it being a french onion soup sandwich hit the nail on the head. I think the concept is great, but maybe less is more. Perhaps less butter and the onion is extremely over powering. The chips were actually quite good and crunchy, ordered an two sides of aoili (also extra). The aoili is also in the sandwich, but I preferred on the side to dip. Overall, the sandwich was not balanced in my opinion. It's missing something refreshing. Probably too salty? Just a bit off. And honestly, I saw when Chef Bobby Flay tried the sandwich, he didn't seem too impressed. Maybe I read him wrong, but I think my expectations were way too high. Management, I like what you're doing here. But maybe try lessening the salt a bit and play around with other flavor profiles for a better balance. Lastly, aside from the unfriendly brunette at the register who didn't mind the business that pays her - everyone else was super friendly, especially Ruben! I wouldn't return here again unfortunately - just way too costly. But still fine to try for yourselves - even if once.

Crazy overpriced sandwich. I spent $45 with tip for a sandwich and shoestring fries ( That were crumbled little bits of overcooked crumbs which you called shoestring fries) Don’t order these! OK, so the sandwich: The hype Is exaggerated by influencers, The beef very little! The amount of prime rib on the sandwich with the smothered onions, The prime rib is really skimpy! $32, Embarrassing that they’re selling it for this much! The prime rib was overcooked and A bit chewy! The melted provolone was nonexistent , most of it Mustard of stayed on the grill way too skimpy on the cheese! The sourdough bread was a star of the sandwich and we know how much that costs !!! Hot Au jus is good, but you really can’t taste the flavor of the prime rib, The cover up of spices on the meat or in the au jus Is way too overpowering! Literally The whole place is at one time stop! It is way too many great sandwiches in New York for a lot less money without a 45 minute line. The nicest part was the employees, All very kind and sweet, The guy dealing with all the people in line was amazingly kind! The food definitely not worth it!! The weird thing is that they have you dump the extra leftover broth into a bucket by the trash bin with a strainer so that leads me to think that they’re boiling it and reheating it up again after everyone has dipped their sandwich in the au jus 🙈 I feel taken advantage of.
