Man!!! Just when you think you'll never find that meal you've been searching for since that place you enjoyed dining at for that specific dinner.... Chinatown at Westlake was a place I've ate at with family and friends. It closed down years ago. Ok, My favorite? The Poopoo tray. Well, they didn't have it here, but they did have the entrè, Sesesme Beef..... spicy hot with fried rice and of course the egg drop soup with the egg roll and of course the ragoons... oh, I had to order the veggie spring roll. MmmMmmMm. Sorry, but I was so wanting to taste my food, I didn't take any images... well I did, but after I had dove in. Not very appealing to the eye, but you'll get the picture... Yeah, I know getting a bit carried away with this one, but what can I say other than, it was really Good eating. Get this, Ray, the manager, who was there filling in for the vacationing Mgr, mentioned that when we visit his place out on north Mopac, he'd deliver up the "Poopoo Tray." I'm gonna take you up on it Mr. Ray Peace ✌🏽
We ordered a pickup of Eel, Yellowtail, Snapper, Spider roll, Tuna roll, Spring roll & Seaweed salad. The eel was phenomenal. The yellowtail was so fresh, and the shrimp spring rolls were some of the best I’ve had.
So cozy. The staff could not be any sweeter!! This feels like a place you’d go on a date in a 90’s rom com. I hope they never renovate!
Great Chinese food in the Rollingwood area. It is our go to spot in the neighborhood.
Some of the best I’ve ever had! I got the sweet and sour chicken. Love the ambience!
We happen to find this place as we were in the area for my son's football game. We loved it. There was a variety and not typical menu you would find in a regular restaurant. My son had the lamb chop and while it tasted good according to him, I felt the portion size was a little small for the price. However, their roti plant with chicken curry and dim sum was good. The sushi platter and the seafood clay pot we had was amazing too. Can't wait to try some other dishes on our next visit.
We rediscovered this Austin resturant over the past year. It was a go to place in the 80s for us. The reason we love it; we have a family of vegetarians and omnivores. This place has lots of vegetarian choices as well as standard Chinese fare. Everyone finds something they like so it's a perfect family place. The service is great.
Great spot for Sushi. Nice staff that remembers who you are and what you eat/ drink . Great hand rolls great cocktails
Local staple for many years and a nice mix of Chinese food and sushi. We went as a family of 5 and spent $115 for 2 appetizers and 5 entrees but no drinks. The tia pepper Basil shrimp we are good as it was 15 years ago the first time we tried it. The Mongolian Beef was a little sweet, but still good. Our only real complaint was the bones in the spicy duck Szechuan.
Rating: 2.7/5 [delivery] This was overpriced Chinese food that you quickly get tired of. For the same price, I would rather go to RedFarm. We ordered on Ubereats and received white rice which was very dry. I am not sure which dish this came with though. Chef's Special Beef ($21) with Fried Rice ($1): This was my husband's favorite. The beef is fried and coated in a rich sauce. It was enjoyable for the first few bites, then became a bit heavy. The fried rice was disappointing, worse than Panda Express. There were barely any vegetables, and what was there tasted old. Oolong Tea Duck ($23) with Brown Rice ($1): The brown rice was nice and fluffy and tasted better than the fried or white rice. The duck is smoked with oolong tea and then fried. When we received it, it was not crispy, so we air-fried it ourselves, which made the meat drier. The oolong flavor was barely noticeable. I would not recommend ordering this for pick-up or delivery, only dine-in. The portion size of the duck was generous. The sweet plum sauce did not pair well with the duck; I preferred it with a darker hoisin-style sauce. Moo Shu ($15) with Pork ($3): This was my favorite dish of the night. The flavors were consistent, textures were right, and the bamboo shoots were more pronounced. It came with thin pancakes that did not seem fully cooked.
Overall, I'd rate this as "average". Everything was okay but nothing stood out. The wonton soup was the best thing out of my order. The broth was nice and salty and it included a lot of chives, with a fair amount of wontons. The wontons, themselves, had a tasty filling but were a bit thicker than I prefer. The Hot and Sour soup was a bit off. It had a nice amount of ingredients but it was a little bland. It didn't really have the classic, hot and sour taste that it looked like it was going to deliver. Lastly, the Kung Pao beef was good. It was more of a bell pepper centric kung pao than the spicy kind, with the baby corn, but the sauce was nice and the beef was tender. I might reorder from here but I would definitely double-check my other options first.
The place is average at best. You’ve had their food. It’s the same as all Chinese restaurants.
The chilies they use in the General Tso chicken, among other dishes, has black mold. Their food has a strong moldy taste as of late.
We decided to try out this restaurant on a whim, but sadly, it didn’t meet our expectations. When we think of Chinese food, we imagine bold spices and rich flavors, but what we got was quite the opposite. The heavily battered and fried pepper steak lacked the authentic taste we were hoping for, and the chicken prepared in two styles also fell short of our flavor expectations. To emphasize our disappointment, we compared this restaurant to Panda Express, a fast-food chain. Surprisingly, even Panda Express offered more satisfying flavors than this place, which was a bit disheartening. Adding to our dissatisfaction was the pricing. We were quite surprised to see a single spring roll priced at $4, which felt like an overcharge. In conclusion, we genuinely hope the restaurant takes our feedback to heart and works on improving its culinary offerings. While we were initially excited to try something new, the lackluster flavors and pricing have left us with no desire to return. Our feedback is meant to be constructive, and we look forward to the possibility of a better dining experience in the future.
I went to this restaurant years ago before they moved to this location. I wasn’t impressed back then, but decided to give it another try. We ordered boneless pork and steamed shrimp dumplings as appetizers, and mu-shu pork for the entrée. The pork had decent sauce but didn’t taste very fresh. The dumplings arrived lukewarm; we sent them back and they returned hot but completely bland. The mu-shu pork was the biggest disappointment. It came with cold “pancakes” that crumbled when we tried to wrap them, and the pork itself was tasteless. I took a few bites and stopped. My wife asked me not to say anything to the young waiter since it wasn’t his fault. He never asked how the food was anyway—just dropped the check and asked if we wanted a to-go bag (most of the meal was left). We eat out often (look how many reviews I've left), and this happened to be a birthday dinner. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst meals we’ve had in quite a while. Austin has some excellent Chinese restaurants and several decent ones. This wasn’t one of them.
I wanted to like the food but it was bland at best. Ordered Buddha feast which contained 2/3 of “fried rice “ ( was unseasoned rice with a sprinkling of frozen peas and carrots) and 1/3 of a medley of carrots, celery, and broccoli with a bland lobster style sauce. Usually that type of dish contains mushrooms and tofu, this had none. Very little food for $15. Maybe they were having a bad afternoon. Egg roll was decent but greasy. Didn’t eat the soup, so I can’t comment. No one in our group was overly impressed unfortunately.
