First day in Austin and what a way to start. Everyone working here was so friendly and welcoming, and the food was just as amazing! I thoroughly recommend the milkshake, but the burgers are exactly what you want as well. I'm sure we'll be back (and definitely suggesting this place to any friends visiting in the future). Thanks for the amazing welcome!!
Fantastic burger joint near UT campus! Everything is a la carte including fries. $4 margaritas on Thursdays! Great location. Great burger choices from double beef to Turkey! Lots of parking and they take plenty of credit cards. Apparently shakes are massive! All worth it! Highly recommend!
We chose Dirty Martin's Place based on the reviews, so far we have not been disappointed. Far from it. Dirty Martin's is just a little hole in the wall, but my goodness, it was so tasty. First off, we were greeted and served by Shay, he was so polite and attentive. We orgered fried zucchini to start with. Yum yum yum yum, the coating was so good, we haven't had zucchini that good any where else. The strawberry shake was made fresh and did not disappoint. The fries, the burgers and my turkey blt were great. We will be sure to tell our Las Vegas friends to stop in if they visit Austin.
classic austin spot, if you order at the bar you have to stay there but that’s no problem for me good place
Great Burger and sweet potato fries! Service was excellent.
Dirty Martin’s is a not just a campus haunt, it’s an Austin institution. It came up in conversation on a list of things that fit that description, but I haven’t been to. Visited today with a close friend who grew up in this city and enjoyed our appetizers (fried jalapeño slices, chips/queso, and corn nuggets). Ordering was simple (counter, or QR codes at the table- which is what we did), food service was expedient, food was well made and just might have had no business being as cheap as it was for how delicious it tasted. The young lady who, in the interest of respecting privacy, will only be named by the first letter of her name, “A”- was courteous, respectful, and knowledgable. High fives all around. I’m o my embarrassed I haven’t eaten here sooner in my 19+ years of calling Austin home.
The food was excellent. Just the sort of burger I was craving. We will definitely be back. That “greasy diner burger” flavor was just what I was hoping for. We had the D. H. Special and the O. T. Special. The malt, float, and milkshake options looked tempting but we opted for double pattys instead. We shared a side of fries and got some jalapeño ranch dressing for dipping. The ranch may have also found its way into my burger as well. It was smoky and spicy. Service was excellent and staff was super friendly. Did I mention, we will be back.
Excellent Austin landmark. Four stars only bc inconsistent. Usually the burgers are great and fun times. Sometimes they're overwhelmed by students and the food is just okay but still great atmosphere
Was in town with a brother to visit another brother that was recovering from a really bad accident. He'd told me all about the place, so had to take him there and see for myself. Best burger I've had in for!! And those onion rings? Omg!!!! Huge shout out to the guys there for taking the time to spend some time with our brother and see how he is doing!! I'll be back anytime I'm in town to see my bro!!
This place has great food! The hamburgers are definitely worth the trip. The staff is very friendly and very welcoming. Only thing that surprised me about the staff is that after your food has been delivered, no one comes and checks in with you after that. So if you want refills or a to go box, you have to find a staff member but they are really nice and helpful when you do find one. It was $71.00 for four people to eat and the atmosphere was fun and very cool. Will definitely be back. 🥰😎
This is definitely what I would consider a classic burger place here in the city of Austin. The moment one walks into the place you are immediately immersed in the atmosphere of Dirty Martin's. The food itself is SO GOOD! My favorite especially was the classic burger with a side of fries and onion rings. This is definitely one of the better places to have a good burger in the north part of Austin!
Went to Dirty Martins Place solely for their milkshakes based on recommendations and enticing photos. The restaurant offers ample parking and spacious indoor and outdoor seating. The vanilla malt milkshake was absolutely amazing and perfectly crafted. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving a fantastic traditional milkshake in Austin. Can’t wait to try more flavors on my next visit! Side Note: While my focus was on the milkshakes, Dirty Martins Place offers a full dining experience, so you might want to explore their menu beyond the milkshakes as well.
Had a small cheeseburger and it was so juicy and tender. On side, we ordered fried jalapeños which were so good. I had one of the best old fashioned drinks I've ever had with an Angel Envy ice cube. Also tried the prickly pear mule and Mellow melon which I actually loved. Beware the watermelon soaked in vodka. The bartender and manager were very friendly. It wasn't very busy on a Saturday night as the college kids have gone home for the summer.
Dirty Martins is a must-visit for any burger lover visiting Austin. This classic Austin institution has been serving up delicious burgers and drinks since 1926, and it's easy to see why it's been so popular for so long. I recently had the opportunity to visit Dirty Martins with a group of friends, and we were all blown away by the food. I started with the DIRTY TOTCHOS, which are tater tots topped with homemade queso, ground beef, and pico de gallo. The tots were crispy and flavorful, and the queso was rich and creamy. The ground beef added a nice savory flavor, and the pico de gallo provided a refreshing burst of acidity. For my main course, I had the O.T. SPECIAL, which is a classic cheeseburger topped with bacon, American cheese, mayo, lettuce, and tomato. The burger was cooked to perfection, and the toppings were all fresh and flavorful. The bacon was crispy, the cheese was melty, and the mayo added a nice creamy touch. The lettuce and tomato provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the burger. My friends also had some great things to say about their food. One friend had the CHILI CHEESEBURGER, which is topped with cheddar cheese and Z's Chili. He said that the burger was delicious, but the chili was a bit greasy. Another friend had the ONION RINGS, which were fresh and crispy. He said that they would have been even better if they had been seasoned with a bit more salt. Overall, Dirty Martins is a fantastic place to get a delicious burger in Austin. The food is great, the atmosphere is fun, and the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend checking it out if you're in the area.
First time there, wearing the opposing team's gear, and we were treated like family. Had a great time joking with everyone there, from staff to other patrons. The food, those burgers were awesome. Double meat, plain and dry, was much needed after a day of beers and football. The onion rings were perfect. Glad the city of Austin saved this place, because it is an institution.
Local since 1926. Went on a quiet Friday afternoon. Only a few people in restaurant. If you want a old fashion hamburger to take you back in time, then this is the place to come. Ordered sweet potato fries and fried jalapeños too. Excellent food and excellent customer service. Come check this place out.
Food is pretty good but vibes are what you go for though. Been around for almost one hundred years now. If you have gone to the University of Texas at Austin you have almost definitly eaten at Dirty's before.
I finally got a chance to visit this restaurant and was very pleased I did. I got the Friday Special - Dirty's Chicken Sandwich and fries for only $10! That's a bargain in Austin. The sandwich and fries were very good. I loved the spicy sauce on the sandwich. This is such a nice old dive bar and I love that it is a piece of Austin history. The staff were very friendly. I need to visit again sometime and try one of the drinks.
Right when we walked in we were greeted. The guy that took our order was super friendly. He showed us the menu talked to my 2 year old and my husband alot which was really cool. We wanted a good burger and surprisingly we had both never been here. The food was AMAZING! We both got burgers and our son got a grilled cheese with fries. EVERYTHING was so good. We sat in the dining room in the very back in the corner. It was so pretty with all of the windows. The guy who took our order even came to check on us and ask how our food was. Super rad. People don't do that much anymore. We will definitely be back. The vibe was awesome here on a Sunday afternoon. Dirty Martin's Rocks!
My first visit here was circa 1981 and I was impressed then. Fast forward about 41 years and I'm making my second visit bc I read Dirty's may be demoed to make way for CapMetro. This place is an Austin favorite and institution that deserves to trump any new train track that won't serve as many citizens as Dirty's currently serves. The burgers are to die for. The O.T. Special (large) with raw onions is the way to go. The basket of tots were perfectly seasoned and fried also. It's not as cheap as the '80s, but nothing else is either. Help save Dirty's!
The two pictures below. A small Kumback burger(everything on it), Onion Rings, A Small Malt, a Water and Fried Pickles represented around $28. But everything was amazing. The Kumback Burger was good and cooked made to order(the bun was good, often overlooked in the burger, but it was toasted and wasn’t falling apart or super greasy). The Onion Rings were in their own Ball Park and some of the best in recent memory, I don’t like super thick coating so this was perfect). The Malt(Sm $5) was amazing, not quite as thick as some of the others I’ve had but still unique and good. The Fried Pickles also held their own($10). I thought them very satisfying. It’s hard to find that balance with fried pickles breading/oil/saltiness. This place found that balance. Not too Salty or Oily. The breading didn’t overwhelm the pickle. Perfection IMO
I had to end my Austin trip at the legendary Dirty Martin’s. Happy 93rd birthday to this UT institution! Felt like I travelled back in time as I listened to some awesome old school 70’s rock while I waited for my delicious burger. I got the famous KumBak burger with cheese and added grilled onion. The burger was old fashioned goodness, cooked to perfection exactly as I had requested. Server was friendly and fast and extremely polite. Love this place!
Tried this place for lunch today since I was checking out the Army/Navy store across the street. All of the staff was friendly. I had the Wednesday Special which was the OT burger and a side of onion rings. Food was fresh, came out fast, and was delicious. The Lone Star beer was great in a chilled glass. This spot is exactly what a ninety something year old burger place should be. So many places try to create the atmosphere that this place has earned. I hear that the railroad might be tearing it down to build tracks. This would be a great loss to Austin. Too many American cities are having their landmarks destroyed to be replaced by cookie cutter buildings. Definitely try this place and skip the two fast food chain burgers that share then block
Been coming here for years! A classic burger joint. Lilli w the crazy green hair has a kind demeanor and anticipates guest needs w ease. We sat at the bar and had the Loco Lunchbox drink combo and the Wednesday daily special, which is the DH Special and a side for $10! We had a wonderful experience. Happy to support the oldest burger place still in business in Austin TX. Daniel is also a super cool manager and the cooks RUN this place and are super nice to talk to if you get a chance!
Really lovely traditional burger! One of those places that has been around for decades and found the right recipe. The burger tastes fresh with that perfect amount of grill flavor. The single was an appropriate size, but I may opt for a double next time. Fries were also fresh, hot and crispy. I need to try the tots and sweet potato options next time. Lots of outdoor seating (20 or so picnic tables under a large tent cover). There's a dedicated parking lot (free parking). Staff was really nice... Ordered at the counter and they bring it out to your table.
Ethan was so awesome and attentive. He was extremely fast during a rush hour and very personable the whole time. Great bartender and even better service!!!!
This very nostalgic restaurant est. in 1926 had amazing food! We had the Val's grilled chicken sandwich with Chipotle mayo, onion rings, large Kumback burger with fries, wings, and root beer floats. All the food was super tasty! I would recommend paying at the counter and getting a number versus the QR code menu/pay option at the table. The corner room had multiple screens to watch all of the sports events happening that day with plenty of seating.
Just had lunch at Dirty Martin’s Place and it hit all the right nostalgic notes. I went with the Kum-Bak Cheeseburger and an order of homemade onion rings, and both were fantastic — burger was juicy with a lightly toasted bun, and the onion rings were crispy without being greasy. Also tried their Val’s homemade queso with chips — creamy, flavorful, and a great start to the meal. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, chatting with us and making us feel at home. The whole place has that vintage, relaxed Austin vibe which really adds to the experience. Can’t wait to come back and try the Habanero Burger or dig into those Corn Nuggets next time.
Dirty Martin’s Place is such an Austin gem — I had the Kum-Bak Burger (stacked beef, “Dirty” sauce) with a side of crispy onion rings, and the combo hit all the nostalgic burger joint notes. Their milkshakes (strawberry & chocolate) are thick and classic — perfect with the savory grub. The atmosphere is laid-back and full of history — old photos, local memorabilia, a real hometown feel. The staff were friendly and fast, making it feel like one of your favorite local spots even on first visit.
Every friday after payday, I always make a point to go get a double bacon, double patty, double cheese with no veggies to go... Sometime fries and a soda depending on how hungry i am. Have a Lonestar outside reading the newest Chronicle while waiting for the best burger in austin for the last almost 100 years. The employees are always in a great mood and the burgers come out exactly the way you hoped and expected! Go grab a Kumbak burger and a Lonestar with a date and you'll never forget a Dirty Burger 🤘🏽💚
Dirty Martin’s Place: A Timeless Austin Classic Nestled in the heart of Austin's West Campus, Dirty Martin’s Place stands as a testament to the city's rich culinary history. Established in 1926 by John Martin as Martin’s Kum-Bak, the establishment began with a single flat-top grill, an eight-stool bar, and a small drive-thru. The original dirt floors led to the affectionate nickname "Dirty's," a nickname that has endured even after the floors were replaced with concrete in the early 1950s. Over the decades, Dirty Martin’s has become a regular hangout for University of Texas students and locals. The restaurant's commitment to quality and tradition has kept it a staple in Austin's dining scene. I went with two friends, Mark and Susan Wilson, who attended UT almost 50 years ago, and they remembered going on dates there on Friday nights. “I remember the cook frying burgers, and he would have cigarette in his mouth. We always joked that there was a good chance some ashes would fall on the grill and provide extra flavoring. We have a ton of good memories in this place,” said Susan. I asked the waitress what the main sellers are these days, and she said the Kumbak Cheeseburger, the D.H. Special and Dirty’s Chicken Sandwich are the big three. Kumbak Cheeseburger - The signature dish since 1926, the Kumbak Cheeseburger features a juicy 100% Angus beef patty, topped with American cheese, mayo, pickle and tomato and toasted sesame bun. It's a simple yet satisfying choice that has stood the test of time. The D.H. Special - This is a double patty melt served with grilled onions, pickle and tomato on Texas toast. Dirty Chicken Sandwich - Fried chicken tenders, with lettuce, tomato, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo served on a toasted sesame bun. While the Kumbak Cheeseburger is good, I liked the O.T. Special. It’s basically the Kumbak Cheeseburger but add bacon. I also chose to double the meat. Guys will want to add the double meat option. The patties are thinner, and the extra meat made the choice perfect. Next time I want to add a fried egg, grilled onions and jalapenos to the O.T. I also tried sides of tater tots and onion rings. The tots were so good. Soft and properly salted. Onion rings were a little dry for me. Some people may like that style. I will go with tots and Fried Pickles next time. The restaurant's rich history is also marked by the dedication of its staff. Cook Wesley Hughes served at Dirty Martin’s from 1956 to 2009, becoming a beloved icon in the community. Legend has it that his brother, J.T., created Austin’s first bacon cheeseburger, which evolved into the O.T. Special. Dirty Martin’s Place offers more than just a meal; it provides a glimpse into Austin's past and a taste of its enduring flavors. Whether you're a long-time local or a first-time visitor, a stop at Dirty Martin’s is a must to experience a piece of Austin's culinary history. #MattGoodEats
This is a really good old restaurant to check out, it's actually 99 years old. The food is top-notch, especially if you're into spicy stuff. Just ask for the Habanero Burger, it comes with real Habaneros 🌶 🍔 😋 🌶. The customer service is top-notch and the staff is super friendly. Higley recommends it 👌.
I recently tried Dirty's for the first time with a group of friends and went with the Habanero burger 🍔—it was perfectly juicy, and the fries were super crispy, I ordered the pickled Habanero on the side, but ended up eating the whole thing. 🥵 I really enjoyed the retro vibe and laid-back atmosphere of this local favorite. If you’re in the mood for a classic, no-frills meal, this spot is a great choice. ☺️
Step into Dirty Martin's Place and you'll swear you've entered a time machine set to "blast from the past." The decor screams retro chic louder than your grandma's polyester pantsuit, and the customer service? It's so classic, you'll half expect the staff to break out into a rendition of "Grease Lightning." Now, let's talk burgers. The OT Burger is like the reliable friend who's always there for you, simple yet oh-so-satisfying. It's like biting into a slice of nostalgia with each mouthful. And those buffalo wings? They're so good, they'll make you forget your manners faster than a Texas tornado. But wait, there's more! The house-made lemonade is like a sip of liquid sunshine, guaranteed to put a smile on your face faster than a dad joke at a family reunion. So, if you're tired of the hipster haunts and looking for a taste of the good ol' days, Dirty Martin's Place is where it's at. Just remember to leave your skinny jeans at home and bring your appetite for fun—and maybe a spare pair of stretchy pants. You'll thank me later.
Has been here forever and I very much enjoyed going back after a long spell. Stoped in to watch the Cowboys football game and had dinner. Got the chill burger with fries. Everything was super good. Waitress was checking in on us periodically and the environment was nice for a place like this.
First time I've ever been here. I didn't know there was so much history with this place. Food was very good. I think there should've been more tater tots but still good. Strawberry lemonade could've been sweeter. No complaints at all. Oreo shake was delicious. Fried pickles and the chips and queso was awesome. Very good burger with a homemade quality. Great atmosphere with plenty of inside and outside seating and a nice looking bar. Highly recommend it!!! 5 stars!!!

Good patty melt type sandwich. But it felt kind of small as a meal and not meaty enough. Guess that's why they offer doubles on most burgers. Tried a bite of the habanero burger and that was pretty amazing and actually really spicy. The place itself is a cool old classic. I would not hesitate to come back for burgers and beer.
Took my daughter to lunch today here. 2 large burgers and a fry and onion rings and a bloody Mary and Diet Dr. Pepper. Fries were just okay as also the OR. Batter was bland on these and seemed slightly under cooked. Burgers were good. Price was $43 with tip. Somewhat pricey for 2 burgers for lunch but a nice place and pretty good food!
I had the OT burger which was not bad. The patties weren't freshly cooked as it was a bit cold. The bacon was fresh, but way to chewy and greasy. The fried cream corn was good, the dirty tots had more beef than tater tots.
I'm an Uber driver and needed a sec to eat then get back to work. Tried this place, got a Double OT Burger with fries and a sweet tea. Everything was pretty good, not life changing but pretty good. This is definitely worth a stop and try if you're in the area. The service was pretty good and they made me feel at home. They got my food to me quick and it was fresh and hot. For the fact that they have been around as long as they have, it's worth that to stop alone.
First time here, 08-04-18. I've been craving a good ole burger. I didn't want a burger chain. So while visiting Austin I came across this place. It's very spacious. The back room has tables and benches. The menu is old fashion & I love it. I ordered the Kumbak cheeseburger (small-1 Patty), with hand cut fries.. Omg so freaking good. The only negative thing is the fries had no seasoning but nothing a little salt & pepper couldn't do. The other thing is I should have gotten a larger burger. Lol
Dirty Martin's Austin's oldest restaurant at 91 years as of this writing. They've been slinging patties since 1926 and this place is a legitimate Austin icon. The burgers, fries, and shakes are all fantastic. It's the kind of place where you can sit at the bar watching the grill, go for a table away from the noise, or hit up the back patio. So much history here and well worth a visit if you are ever in Austin, Texas. They have their own parking lot which is a huge plus in this part of town. The only reason this doesn't have 5 stars is that they aren't the very best burgers in town (though they are still excellent) But the nostalgia factor and the shakes keep this at a solid 4 and if this rating system allowed it, 4.25.
Dropped in today, not realizing that I was the 98th anniversary. Man…this place as jumpin’!!!!! Somehow my order got dropped, but I’m definitely giving them some grace. The staff made it right and once the problem was realized, my order came out hot and fresh. The burger was solid. You can taste the 98 years seasoned flat top. I also tried the queso was I enjoyed. And last but far from least, one of the best cherry limeade in existence. Overall a great experience and will be back.
We visited the Dirty Martini's Place on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch. The indoor space is really big, there is a dining hall/private event kind of space and also small sitting area by the bar counter. There is also a large sitting area outside by the parking lot that looked very nice. We had the O.T Special, Habanero Burger and the Dirty's chicken sandwich with a side of the onion rings. Everything was really tasty, we enjoyed the experience very much. The onion rings needed a bit more salt but there was salt shaker on the table. There is a large selection of cocktails and some beer on tap, we had the Shiner Bock on tap that was very fresh and cold, also the Oreo Milkshake. Everybody was very friendly and the music selection playing was, for me, very nice.

This place has its history and the people working there are always very nice, but the food is simply way too greasy. Even the milk shake tasted watered down. The atmosphere is certainly something different than what you will get anywhere else in West Campus, but there are simply better food options all around.
First thing i want to mention is how the place sets a very nice and almost nostalgic atmosphere of old school American diners, I think thats due to the fact that this place has been open since 1926 and they have multiple pictures and decor of the past displayed on the walls. They have a very nice outdoor seating area, main dining room and separated cool bar area to enjoy mixed drinks or hard liquor. Unfortunately as a vegetarian i had only one option to choose from and it was a black bean burger that left me wondering if their food is just mediocre, the burger was really dry with very little sauce and not much flavor. The side of deep fried pickles on the other hand was delicious. I don’t think i will be coming back as this place doesn’t have a nice vegetarian options.
Food was good but man is this place pricey, 7-9 $ a burger plus fries and a drink and you're looking at almost a $30 for two people. Worth it? I doubt it, especially since whataburger is literally next door. It is a cool place though, and the staff was really nice, I hope the can come to terms with the idea of lunch specials
Meh Customer service is nice, but no table service beyond them bringing you your order. It smells something fierce in the back room. The bar is tolerable. Fries aren’t great. Cheeseburger is good but the cheese isn’t melter into the burger. The corn nuggets are expensive (compared to the cheeseburger) and nothing to write home about. Their Diet Coke is on point.
Had always heard of this place and it comes highly recommended so I went to check it out Saturday. I wasn't too impressed with it. I got a large Kumback burger and while it was decent, it was not worth the $12 I paid for it ($13 with tip). Employees were cool and its a neat old place but it just wasn't anything but an average burger you can make at home. Way overpriced especially when you can walk next door to Whataburger and In N Out and get a better burger cheaper with fries and a drink. Place was packed so I think they may coast on nostalgia
I was excited that this place was around for nearly 100 years. But sadly the burgers came out average. The freshly made onion rings were fresh- but lacked seasoning so that was also a bummer. Honestly prolly wouldn't be back, as there are so many other options for burgers in towns. But maybe just for the onion rings but would ask for extra seasoning.
Prices are great but food was okay. drinks are super strong and it wasn't busy at all we were 1 of 2 tables. The place seems old school and like a cool spot to hang out before or after the UT games…

It's been many years since I ate here.\nSince Doc waited on us.\nNow the patties are So Small!\nTasted good, way overpriced.\nGuess we need to pay for renovations....
One of the worst cheeseburger I have ever eaten. I don’t know why they put so much mayo in the burger but it’s impossible to eat. Meat is plastic and I can’t feel it in my mouth I can feel just only mayo and onion. Tatter tots were good but they serve a little bit, around 10 pieces, and its not worth almost 5$.
I used to take our kids here when they attended UT, between 2014 and 2021. Back then it was a restaurant with waitresses, the food was better, and far less expensive. Now you have to stand in line to order, and decide your mandatory tip starting at 17% before receiving your food. The buns were stale, and the portions were small. Other than that the food was OK.
I was super excited to try this place since it's local/small business. The burger and fries were both bland and weren't anything special. The queso tastes like Velveeta and Rotel, one of the worst I've had in Austin so far. The most disappointing part was the onion rings. I ordered to go, a server brought out some onion rings to a table & they smelled so good I decided to add them to my order. I couldn't wait until I got home so I tore the bag open in my truck and grabbed an onion only to be severely underwhelmed by the complete lack of flavor. The onions tasted like they were boiled instead of fried while still being greasy enough to leak through the paper bag. I stopped eating the food just so I could write this. I don't even want to finish anything, but I paid $20 for all of it. 🥲
Horrible. Inconsiderate. Rude. Hostile. If you have any negative adjectives that come to mind they definitely describe to this place. My friend had a dietary restriction (celiac/gluten-free) so he bo…
Today with my wife we went to have something that Austin should be proud of. Whole lunch turned to be huge disappointment to say the least! We were the only people ordering at that moment and it took 30 min for food to come out! The onion rings were burnt and completely greasy. The taste was that of old grease, The burger was just SO SAD, a stale bun and nothing you’d expect from a good burger. The meat had no flavor the juiciness was completely lacking. Not to mention that entire restaurant's luck of cleanliness NO MAS AMIMIGOS! THIS IS NOT A FAKE REVIEW MR. Owner!!!!! Do your job better That’s All!
Really disappointing! We went on a Saturday 4-5pm and they were kinda busy, but the food was horrible -- burger was obviously cooked prior to ordering and was just bad...the bacon was prepared many hours prior and hard as a rock. As we were leaving we decided to get couple shakes. After ordering, paying for the shakes, we were told it would be a 15 minute wait as there was big order they were working on. Why not tell us before we paid? And of course, it took almost an hour before we got our shakes, which were nasty and tasted like stale milk.
