Sunday brunch we are always on the lookout for a good place! My babe found this place and we have been looking for Southern-style food and were surprised with a buffet style with so many options! Service was amazing from being greeted by the host to being served at the bar area. I would recommend having a reservation ahead of time because this place is very busy on Sundays but the bar is first come basis. I love the style of the restaurant it gives the old Austin Heart of Texas such a cute and fun atmosphere. There is plenty of seating inside or you can go outside and there is a bar area too! If you’re looking for a buffet with plenty of options of food this is the place to check out.
Was on a journey to find some good chicken & waffles and this place has it! We parked about a block away due to some construction but no big deal. We went during a lunch hour and wasn't veey busy but the ambiance and energy was laid back but with class. Our server was cool he was polite and friendly. We didn't order alcohol but they have a huge menu of delicious sounding cocktails and wine. The apps all spunded delicious, we wanted to try something different so we tried the roasted garlic bulbs and it was a pleasant surprise. It was messy for the hands but they provide you a packaged sanitary wipe for when you're finished. I'm glad they take that into consideration. We then ordered chicken fried steak that came with a creamy thick gravy and a side of garlic mashed potatoes. I then ordered my chicken and waffles which also came with gravy & syrup. Also ordered fries which were light and crisp seasoned well. Everything was absolutely wonderful to taste and super filling. I am looking forward to coming back to this place with family or friends in the future.
Stumbled across this restaurant as it was close our hotel and what a gem! Loved the atmosphere, decor and most importantly the great food and hospitality. The portion sizes were incredibly generous and everything tasted 10/10. Highlights were the biscuits and chicken and waffles. Our server was so attentive and made sure we had plenty of to-go boxes for leftovers.
The Chicken fried steak was extremely heavy and big but it was delicious. I definitely don't think this is the ”best southern food” but it is a great establishment. The garlic bulbs were also good, the marmalade on top was a little too overpowering. Bread pudding was average. The restaurant itself was so loud and crowded. Some people looked very uncomfortable with their sitting arrangements. We opted to sit in the bar/patio area which was much nicer!
We had a fantastic dinner at Moonshine. The menu selection was very good. Our server, Candace, was very friendly and helpful. She assisted us with meal choices and she was outstanding. After dinner we went downstairs to the speakeasy. Bartender Cameron served us a variety of amazing beverages. You will love Moonshine.
This wasn’t just dinner—it was a full experience. Every single thing we tried was amazing, like the kind of food where you pause after a bite just to appreciate it. Nothing felt average or forgettable. On top of that, the service was fantastic—attentive, friendly, and really on point the whole night. The building itself adds so much to the vibe, too. It’s such a cool space with tons of character, which makes the whole meal feel even more special. It’s the kind of place you want to hang out in and take your time. We left already talking about what we’d order next time. Definitely one of those spots that sticks with you. We can’t wait to go back and do it all over again.
I had the center cut pork chop and it was absolutely delicious! Disclosure on my "Atmosphere" rating: I think it would normally be okay, but the party next to us felt they needed to scream at each other rather than just talk to one another. The restaurant was really nice, well kept, staff was friendly, and the meals were delicious!
I came for the chicken fried steak and it did not disappoint. Second best I’ve ever had! My girlfriend had the Salisbury steak and it was very good too. I added a side of bacon to make everything healthy though. Our waiter Hayden was very nice and we didn’t go very long without refills and made sure to make sure we had what we needed without being too pushy. I’ll definitely come back!
We had my husband’s birthday dinner here. The atmosphere was perfect! We had the fried green tomatoes and I did not expect them to be so delicious and unique. The waygu Salisbury steak was delicious as well. My husband is a bourbon drinker and they did not disappoint on selection. Our waitress was awesome! I can’t wait to get back through Austin and come again!
Moonshine Grill was the best choice we could’ve made for Thanksgiving. The buffet was incredible—prime rib, turkey, ham, and a great variety of sides like mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, deviled eggs, plus plenty of fresh fruit and desserts. It truly captured the festive Thanksgiving spirit. Valet parking was $12, and there’s also street parking nearby. I’m definitely coming back next year—hoping I can snag a reservation again!
Everything was awesome! The popcorn as a lil app was nice and not something I’ve ever experienced before. Our waitress was attentive and helpful with the menu as newbies. I got the chicken fried steak and it was so good!! Loved the touch of spice from the chipotle in the gravy. My husband had the chicken and waffles which he enjoyed. We got the biscuits as an app also! Which they were soooo buttery and delicious
The lovely authentic place to visit with friends or family to have brunch . The Sunday Southern brunch variety was great including various dishes, soup and desserts. The place was crowded and it is recommended to make a reservation. Ambiance was vibrant and staff were courteous and quite friendly. A must try in Austin to see a walk to this restaurant in downtown Austin Texas. 🌺
Bourbon bar that did not disappoint. Couple of drinks that were well made and tasty. Luke and Sam were great at the bar! Food was excellent; chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and the harvest bowl. We split both and it was a prefect amount of food. We ended with some peanut butter mouse pie. Awesome. Good atmosphere and setting was hopping for a Monday night. I definitely recommend giving Moonshine a try.
Historic building. Crowded on a Monday--make reservations. Complimentary popcorn was a little salty for my taste. Fried green tomatoes topped with smokey flavored shrimp and Chipotle drizzle were excellent. Brussel sprout appetizers were tasty. Companions loved their generous portions of tasty chicken fried chicken and CF steak as well as salmon dishes. My trout was meh, and I was disappointed that my seasonal vegetable was broccoli although it was cooked well. Pictures had me thinking I'd be getting green beans. Meals came with a basket of moist cornbread mini muffins. Peeps topped the meal with reasonably tasty bread pudding, banana pudding, and chocolate espresso brownie. I'd definitely go back for the fried green tomatoes and to try the cathead biscuits and some other dishes. Large selection of cocktails and other alcohol, but we didn't try any.
Came here after being recommended by some relatives that live in Austin and it did not disappoint. My friend and I ordered several shareables and had delicious cocktails, which was more than enough for an afternoon meal. It also must have been Happy Hour when we went, so that was a bonus! Only regret is that we were to full to try more of the menu! Staff was also great. Very friendly and attentive.
This is a must go to place while you are visiting Austin. We called to see if reservations were acceptable and told that it is first come first serve only. Upon arrival, we were told it would be a 45 minute wait, but one of the bartenders/waiters were able to fit us in at a table in a smaller bar area downstairs. Atmosphere was nice. They cater for events that were going on in another portion of the restaurant. Food was excellent. Service was very good. My son and I had the Chicken Fried Steak and my husband had the pork chops. We all enjoyed the chips and cheese sauce as an appetizer and I went for dessert which was a decadent fudge brownie mixture. Would definitely recommend.
Complementary popcorn provided at the table #win We then ordered pickle spears for an appetizer. It was a panko breading on the pickles that came with a ranch dipping sauce. They were nicely breaded and the ranch had a kick to it. It was like a Parmesan buttermilk ranch with some cayenne. Quite good. I had St Louis style ribs that came with a Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce and tobacco onions and Yukon potatoes. The ribs were ridiculously good. The meat literally fell off the bones and was so flavorful and seriously didn’t even need the sauce. The onions weren’t anything great, just your average onion straws. The potatoes were so smooth and delicious. My wife had the horseradish crusted salmon which came with brussel sprouts. It did not taste like horseradish, however it was cooked to perfection. The lemon dill butter sauce that came with the entree helped pull it all together. The brussel sprouts were tender and crispy with parmesan on it. Our kiddo got the chicken and waffles. The waffles were fluffy, buttery and sweet. The chicken was juicy but the breading was thick and bland. The chicken needed a lot more seasoning to cut the sweetness of the waffles and syrup. A basket of jalapeño cheddar cornbread was provided with dinner which wasn’t anything super spectacular and was what you expected. Give us a follow on Instagram @gbdiningdykes
Moonshine Grill was absolutely delicious. We got the Roasted Garlic Bulbs, Centre Cut Pork Chop and the New York Strip. The Garlic Bulbs were good but unnecessary for just the two of us as we were so full for dinner plus you are constantly smelling like Garlic for the days following. I had the steak and it was amazing, could have maybe used a bit more seasoning on the mash. I got a side of fries with the steak instead of the brussell sprouts and they were cooked to perfection! My husband got the pork and I heard no complaints.
Delicious spot for comfort food! Specially, the calamari was some of the best I’ve ever had! It was fresh, perfectly seasoned and simply perfect. My bf loved the popcorn and our entrees were delicious as well! Service was very friendly and attentive, special shout out to Luke! Drinks were awesome, atmosphere is great, can’t wait to come back!
Great restaurant. I can see why it has so many 5* reviews. Sat in the covered outside area during one of Texas' little cold snaps and it was pleasant. The inside is way nicer BUT they have done a good job on the outdoor area. Food was excellent! Wish bar menu had more Mocktails. We will certainly be back when that side of town.
Great food, service and atmosphere. Easy walk from anywhere downtown Austin. Different levels and cool patios with fire pits or fireplaces. Different dining rooms makes it really unique. Food was delicious. We did several appetizers calamari, shrimp corn dog, garlic bulb. Harvest bowl and MacCheese were really good too. A lot of fun for happy hour, group dinners or traveling solo.
Our waiter was amazing. With the large group we had, he kept us all in the know of the process to make sure we knew the expectations, kept us well hydrated, explained all the plates and overall just provided us with an amazing experience. Everybody is our group was very happy with their food selections and I did not see one plate go back with food.

Came here and it was kinda packed so we left and came back the next day on the early side and was PLEASED they had a Sunday brunch menu!!! I was sad I didn’t get the dinner next time I will though!! But the brunch was nice!!! I started off with a water and lemon… and hell it’s TEXAS so I had to get a few beers as well… so let me ramble off everything I had.. I started off with the popcorn they bring you then ordered some fried green tomatoes and they was DIFFERENT look y’all they had a shrimp salsa type of deal on top of and oh man that shh was GREAT like I ordered more GREAT!! Then and the toasted bread with the smoked garlic cloves and that sauce mixed with the garlic on that bread!!! Super good then I ordered the chicken and waffles 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️😁😁 why not??!! The waffle was light and airy really good flavor without the syrup and the chicken was fried nice and crispy it was so good and I got some deviled eggs to share with my girlfriend… those?!🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ super trash like nasty don’t know who told them that recipe was good but it was to much tartness and dill could of been better with sweet relish 🤷🏽♂️But over all this place was good my girlfriend didn’t think so and our server was being mighty rude to her say smart comments and snatching stuff out of her hands because he was frustrated… but the food was amazing I recommend this place if your ever downtown Austin Texas just stay away from that server lol
This was my first visit to the Great City of Austin, TX and this was the first restaurant I visited. (based upon a recommendation). Can't remember my Servers name, but the was awesome. I dined on the patio, nice weather. The fried green tomatoes were fried to perfection and I really enjoyed the Creole Shrimp and Grits. *THE PARKING IS NOT IDEAL. Very expensive to park in lot, but if there is street parking it is free from 6pm until.
I was visiting Austin with my friend and we went here 3 times during our 4 day stay so it is safe to say that we thoroughly loved it here! The food, service, and atmosphere were all excellent. I loved the unique touch of having complimentary popcorn. During our visits we tried the hangar steak, rainbow trout, blackened catfish, pork ribs, and chicken almondine. Every dish was a hit! All of the staff were amazing, but especially Cassie who had excellent recommendations to really sell the menu. It was great to see the staff helping each other out and making the service so seamless. They also offered a complimentary dessert to celebrate my friend's birthday.
Moonshine Grill is a fantastic spot for Sunday buffet brunch! The food was delicious, and the patio seating made for a lovely atmosphere, especially with the fall-themed decorations adding a cozy touch. It’s also a dog-friendly restaurant, which was a huge bonus as I brought my pups along. The service was excellent from start to finish. I highly recommend this place for a relaxed and enjoyable brunch experience.
This place is awesome. Great food, service and atmosphere. We were greeted and sat promptly inside shortly before 5pm, our server was super friendly and great at his job. Very prompt and attentive as well. My husband got the brisket burnt ends quesadillas and they were exceptional. And I got the meatloaf sandwich with a side of macaroni. It was a rather large burger and tasted amazing along with the macaroni! The complimentary popcorn was a sweet bonus too! We did make it in time for happy hour and our drinks were awesome. All together with our entrees and two happy hour drinks, we spent around $50 not including tip. We will definitely be coming back!
Come here, eat here, order the shrimp and grits. This is a chill spot with a great covered patio. They also have portable AC. The service is quick and friendly and the food is 10/10. When you are seated they great you with a bowl of seasoned popcorn. However don't skip on the fried shrimp corn dogs. I can't wait to eat here again with friends. The brunch menu also looks delicious!
My partner and I have been coming to Moonshine for years! If you’re on the fence about coming- I highly recommend you stop by and don’t let the heavy construction scare you away. Apps: we love the shrimp corn dogs and the queso. For mains- we try something new every time but the pork chop is forever a favorite. Don’t skip the cocktails: they are done well. Lastly- the service is always great. We had a larger party this weekend and they accommodated us. See you guys next time we visit!
We got Moonshine catering for our wedding. Words cannot express how exceptional the service and food was. The team worked with us so well and they were very patient, accommodating and flexible as we were planning our menu. They say if you have good music and good food, the rest of the wedding falls in place. Moonshine certainly delivered on food. It’s clear that from the sheer amount of compliments we received for the food and service, they will always be a memorable piece of our wedding.
The food was incredible! I'm thankful to our server, the manager, and the hostess for their great service. The ambiance was very relaxed and laid-back, complemented by some music in the background. While street parking is limited, they do offer valet service for $12. We tried the Wagyu Salisbury Steak (5/5), the Brisket Burnt Ends Quesadillas (5/5), and the Peanut Butter Mousse Cake—perfect for any peanut butter fan! Also the meals come with the jalapeño cheddar cornbread (10/5)!!!
We finally had the opportunity to stop by. The last time we were in Austin, we tried to stop by for the Sunday brunch but the line was too long and we had other plans. We weren't able to partake in the Sunday brunch on this visit either, but we did have the opportunity to have dinner. As always, it was super crowded, but we only had a 30-minute wait. Once we did get seated, everything was smooth sailing from there. Our waitress Brooke was absolutely wonderful. She made some great recommendations and was very attentive. She definitely made our visit a pleasant experience. We actually had two visits, one for lunch and one for dinner. I was not present for lunch but was for dinner. During lunch, my family had the chicken fried steak, shrimp & grits, crab cake, chicken & waffles, wings, and some beverages. For dinner, we had wings, crab cake, chicken & waffles, beverages, and took an order of bread pudding with us. Everything was delicious. Looking forward to trying the brunch one day. Cheers!
Kiara was a great server. Absolutely LOVED her vibe! As far as the food, PHENOMENAL!! Wow, just WOW! We had a glass of Zenato Pinot gri and old fashioned. Crispy calamari and frond tomates for appetizers. St. Louis Ribs with roasted garlic mashers. And the pan seared chicken almondine with, seasonal veggies. And out complimentary cornbread muffins. Mmmmmm, delicious. Will definitely be back
AMAZING FOOD. Oh my goodness. My friend and I stayed nearby and decided to go here for lunch one day and it was so good. We went back the very next day for dinner with another friend. Before I dive into my recommendations, just know it’s not busy during the day but on a Friday or Saturday night definitely call and make reservations or do so online. First off the complementary popcorn is delicious so let’s just get that out the way. My friend had the catfish and I had the shrimp and grits and you can definitely tell everything was freshly cooked, and the flavor profile just blew us out of the water. I say this as someone that loves southern cooking and my friend grew up on Southern cooking and we were extremely impressed. The real star of the show was the homemade biscuits which came out steaming hot both times we ordered it and was as big as an iPhone 9,000. Also the moonshine slushy may or may not have put an extra gleam in our eyes. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for authentic southern cuisine with a delightful Southern ambience.
We went there for lunch and had the chicken fried steak, the blackened catfish and the shrimp corn dogs. Everything was cooked to perfection. I’d recommend their hard lemonade if you’re in the mood for a cocktail. Our waiters were Fitz and Tyler, both were excellent hosts and the service was outstanding. I will definitely come back. Highly recommended.
Wonderful dining experience as visitors. Friendly and helpful staff. If you like whiskey or want to try moonshine this is a great place with tasty food. Everything we had was very yummy, even the small things like complimentary popcorn and cornbread for the table. Would go back if in town again. Very reasonably priced compared to other similar restaurants.
Moonshine Grill in Austin was a fantastic dining experience for us. My husband got the hangar steak, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The dish came with sides that complemented the steak wonderfully, making for a satisfying and hearty meal. I opted for the chicken and waffles, and it was everything I hoped for – crispy, tender chicken paired with fluffy waffles and just the right amount of maple syrup. The combination was heavenly, and the portion sizes were generous without being overwhelming. The drink menu also deserves a shoutout. I tried the slush with peach moonshine, and it was incredible. Refreshing, not too sweet, and with just the right amount of kick. The ambiance at Moonshine Grill is charming and cozy, with a rustic feel that makes you feel right at home. The service was friendly and attentive, and our server made EXCELLENT suggestions.
Very happy with this place. All the food we had was delicious. You must try Fried Green Tomatoes and Calamari. They both were super yummy. Hanger Steak was juicy and tender. Definitely coming back to this place when in town. Service was fast and the waitress was attentive (I believe her name was Stefanie).
Incredible food, experience and atmosphere. We ran the gauntlet on a good part of the menu including apps, drinks, and entrees. For appetizers, we expected the corn dog shrimp to beat out the others, but surprisingly we loved the pretzels and pimento cheese over the shrimp and wings. When it came to drinks, the Sazerac was my personal favorite. Entrees we're all delicious across the chicken fried steak, chicken and waffles, jalapeno hanger steak, and Sunday house club. We had the opportunity to eat shareable apps in the bar table area prior to being seated and enjoyed both aspects of the meal. Added this spot as a favorite for when in the Austin area.
OMG, folks! Moonshine Grill is a must for comfort food! Generous portions of everything, both fish& veggies. Both the trout & salmon were so flavorful & tender, we had to eat it all (veggies too)! You know I try to eat small amounts of each portions to save room for dessert, but COULDN'T DO IT! We had to eat it all! You will regret it if you don't get dessert! Decadent... rich... and not to sweet! Perfect! I would tell more, but the wonderful coffee is getting cold! Do yourself a favor & treat yourself right - check our Moonshine Grill the next time you're in downtown Austin.
Came here for brunch and got the chicken and waffles. The gravy on the chicken was phenomenal. Our waitress checked on us just enough without being annoying. Vibe is cozy Southern comfort.
This was the first place we ate when we visited Austin. The elevated picture was from our hotel room, so it was certainly convenient. The food, also pictured, was great, and the service was very friendly. At least two staff who weren't our server checked on us at various times. This place was fantastic and I will absolutely come back here next time I'm in town.
Great selection of bourbons and whiskeys. Check out Kinfolk in the cellar of Moonshine Grill if you can get in. Everyone’s meal was delicious and the fresh fish was cooked just right. Be sure to share and enjoy some appetizers along with your drinks. Definitely need reservations since it is a very popular place. Great service as well.
Phenomenal southern grub essentials. Best grits to be found. And you'll live the popcorn while you wait for food to arrive at your table. Absolute must to save room for desert - so many options but select the one with peanut butter. Adequate wait staff that are supported by great management.
It's one of the best restaurants in Austin visit. It is a block away from Fairmont Hotel. We went there two times for dinner in one week. The food is fantastic and delicious, and the waitress is good. A lot of large groups of people are there for dinner. They do have valet parking. This place is very busy, better make a reservation.
Had dinner here while at a nearby hotel. Great variety of items with very big portions. I opted for chicken fried steak. Good breading/meat ratio that was crispy with a cracker crumb like consistency. Chipotle gravy was just the right spice and homemade garlic mashed potatoes were creamy. Restaurant very loud, only drawback I found. They also give you some flavored popcorn to snack on while you wait for your food.
We actually ended up here because the original restaurant we were going to was closed. But we're so glad we found this restaurant. I had shrimp and grits which was outstanding, my friend had the chicken fried steak which literally was the size of her head and my other friend had the steak and it was unbelievable. Great service by Colin and we actually sat in the outdoor area because they were very busy, but it was warm and toasty and everybody was really nice. Can't wait to come back.
We came across Moonshine Grill as we were leaving Austin to head back to Dallas. The food and atmosphere was amazing. You can sit inside or outside and it's actually pretty big when you get inside. The staff was very friendly and great at their jobs. We went around lunch and were in and out in 45 min. I ordered the burger and my husband ordered the hot hose. Both were amazing and juicy. The fries were crispy and had great flavor. They give you a complimentary bowl of popcorn to snack on when you sit down and also serve you cornbread muffins with your meal. We will definitely be back.
I’ve visited this place 3 times during my weeklong stay in Austin. 2 times for lunch and tonight for dinner. Dinner: Horseradish-crusted salmon with creamy lemon sauce & side of corn grits and pimiento cheese. A++ Don’t let the horseradish scare ya. Flavors were expertly blended to create the best dish I’ve had in a minute. Bourbon slushie = not a huge fan of sweet drinks, but the bourbon offset the sweet tea and OJ base. Would order again. Very eclectic vibe with a speakeasy on n the cellar. The speakeasy is open from Wed-Sunday, so I didn’t get to experience a bourbon down there. HOWEVER, my bartender offered me a quick tour at closing time to be able to experience the atmosphere of their speakeasy. I hope to be back in Austin when I can see the speakeasy come to life and enjoy my pour of choice.
I wish I could say this was amazing, however it's was really, really good. Bourbon selection is outstanding chicken fry was good, but the breading kept falling off. Flavors were great on the pork chop, but it was a tad dry without the delicious sauce. I would eat here again but only for a regular occasion and most likely try the burger. The place is cool, great vibe, but the outdoor seats lack comfort for a longer meal experience.
Our server Kiara was nice; give her a raise. The complimentary popcorn was okay a little too salty for me. The crab cakes were very good and portion size was large as well. Our main entree the grilled Romaine salad was different but my salmon was a little bit less than expected. I prefer a mid cut and not the tail part me. Nice vibe and worth checking out. A little pricey but it’s just money.
We went there last night at 9:50 and were so grateful that they let us in even though they close at 10pm. We ordered the fried chicken steak, the corn dog and the queso with brisket. The chicken fried steak looked really good at first glance but we didn’t like it as much. It was a bit dry, but maybe that’s how the dish is and we’re not used to it. The queso with brisket was really good and we LOVED it. The corn dog was also really good and the sauce was very tasty. Also they give you popcorn for free as an appetizer which was so nice because we were starving.
The food was very fresh. Popcorn came out as an appetizer. It had had cayenne pepper all over it so it had a kick that I wasn't expecting when it first popped that in my mouth. I recommend the corn dog shrimp. It's nice. Big prawns dipped with a really thin corn dog batter. Delicious with the sauce that had a nice Berry and a mustard. It gave a nice sweet taste before cutting through and reminding you a little bit of regular corn dog. Delicious! Chicken steak was supposed to be a chipotle sauce on top. Somebody forgot the Cayenne chipotle something. The only reason why I knew it was supposed to be a spicy because I bit into the corn muffin on the side and it had a nice kick which fused really well with the rest of the food that I was eating. Wished I gotten the trout as the waiter suggested. Cause chick steak was bland. But if you wanted to fill up, or second meal definitely pick that. Maybe ask for a bit more spice on the side. 😂
This place is poppping! Came here at 1 pm on a Thursday afternoon and there was a 45 minute wait that really was about 45 minutes. We had to wait outside and at least they serve you appetizers which is really nice. Good: First place I've been to that serves popcorn as a free starting food. It was good buttered popcorn too and I was pleasantly surprised - what a good portion size! I liked the deviled eggs too that we got as well as the corndog shrimp - super unique dish. The chicken and waffles was good as well and the waffles were amazing -cornbread waffles rock! The chicken was also really juicy and good. Bad: The shrimp and grits were a bit too salty and heavy for me. Service time is really long - they are just really busy and it's hard to flag someone down. Overall I enjoyed my time and might come back but not when the wait is that long!
A great vibe with multiple seating areas indoor and out. A solid menu and good service. We sat at one of the interior patio bars. 👍 Good menu; food and drinks. Also had a specials menu as well to the regular one posted on the website. 👍 We had good service at one of the smaller lounge areas in the restaurant Cass who helped us at the bar was attentive, made good recommendations, and was friendly. 👍 The prices are reasonable for what you get. ➡️ Ate: Pretzels with pimento cheese dip, deviled eggs (served the traditional way which I love and respect), and the chicken fried steak (huge, told is was quite good). ➡️ Drinks: Banana Pudding Moonshine (pictured the bottle they pour it from and how I had it served, in a chilled glass as a shot). They also have Texas beers on the menu but we went with Michelob Ultra (have that too).
Cute exterior/interior. Indoor/outdoor and outdoor covered seating with heaters! Plays a rock style music, at least while we were there. Cool atmosphere. Clean bathrooms. The waitress was super nice. She was the one with pink hair. I was impressed she asked first thing about food allergies. I think this should be a stand in the food industry. She brought us free seasoned popcorn. My friends ordered fried green tomatoes (5-6 pieces) and cat head biscuits(3 biscuits). Both were pretty good! The fried green tomatoes had shrimp and lots of flavoring. The biscuits had a nice preserve that wasn’t super heavy. The biscuits are very filling. I ordered the chicken and waffles. This isn’t something I usually order but I thought I would try, the waffles were very fluffy, chicken was fried and season ok. There was syrup and gravy on the plate as well. I mixed and dipped into all of them. I was satisfied. My friend got blackened cat fish and grits. The grits were one of the best ones I have had and I’m from the south so I’ve tasted quite a bit. They gave us corn bread muffins that were slightly spicy so I assume they have jalapeños in them but they were good, not dry.
This restaurant has an enjoyable outside eating area. It is covered with good lighting and atmosphere for those who enjoy outdoor patio eating. The food was good, we tried the place based on the southern menu selections and excited to try it out. I had the chicken fried steak, it was very good. A great crust, flavor and tender steak. I enjoyed the kick of heat from the Chipotle gravy, which just added to the overall flavor. And the mashed potato also good. Initially, the first biscuit order came to the table cold, once we shared with our waiter this was quickly resolved. The next arrival the biscuits were hot and fresh. The biscuit is okay, a little more dense for my liking. And my friends shared their selections was a good choice. Really good service as well.
We came for the whiskey and stayed for the food. The service is top-notch. I'm a chicken and waffles connoisseur. The dish here was pretty good - not the best, but definitely in the game. My hubby had the shrimp and grits and gave them a solid nod of approval. The lighting was dim, but the sound was on blast. It's loud friends. Nice for a Friday with friends.
Atmosphere was lovely and comfortable, felt perfect to match the entire comfort food theme. We didn’t have a reservation but called before coming in and they were very happy to seat us in time. Service was attentive however felt extremely rushed, barely had time to even look at the menu and couldn’t finish my appetizer in piece. The food overall was good! The Mac and cheese was tasty but it was advertised as being baked however did not appear or taste like it was baked. The chicken fried steak was also tasty however a bit too hard and the crust wasn’t as crispy as I’m used to. St. Louis ribs were delicious and the mashed potatoes were buttery and smooth.
Had a great time here for Brunch on my first visit. Moonshine is very popular, so be prepared to wait an hour or so for brunch. I was pleasantly surprised with the feel of the inside. Gives you an almost upscale feel, but still relaxed. Popcorn was a big hit for me. It was really good. I also tried the fried green tomatoes, chicken and waffles, and my friend had the full moon platter. Our waitress was knowledgeable, friendly and provided great suggestions. She made my Arnold Palmer perfectly! 😊 For those mobility impaired. There are a few steep steps to enter. I didn't notice a ramp. Might be one but I didn't see it. There is a patio garden which is wheelchair friendly. Also parking is an issue, so be prepared to valet for $7-9 depending on when you go. It was worth it for us. The valet guys were fast and friendly. Overall I had a great time, and would come again.?
Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill is a fantastic spot in Austin for delicious comfort food with a Southern twist. We enjoyed the steak quesadillas, steak fajita bowl, and chips with queso — each dish was flavorful, fresh, and generously portioned. The guacamole, queso, and toppings were excellent complements. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. Highly recommend!
Loved the atmosphere as it was in an old house on a nondescript street in Austin, Texas. Service was great! Attentive but not over bearing. The food (I’d say the food vibe is elevated comfort food)was good but not delicious. My favorite thing was the free popcorn they bring to your table. Quite tasty! My cocktail, a Blind Mule, was quite yummy. I would go back, but I wouldn’t rush back.
Came here for brunch with my husband. We had a devil eggs appetizer and was disappointed that it was so bland. It's hard to mess up devil eggs and they did. They promptly took care of it and offered a dessert. That's great customer service right there. I had the cornflake chicken salad for my entree and my husband had the club sandwich. I thought my chicken was a tad overcooked and dry. It was still good but I wish it wasn't dry. The club sandwich was good. I like the soft bread while my husband preferred the bread slightly more toasted. I think it comes down to personal preference. We love the sweet potato tater tots side. The banana pudding was phenomenal. Service was great. Our server is wonderful.
Very mediocre restaurant. Probably best just for drinks. Food, red snapper, had no taste. Very impressive plate. Look like a few pieces with bread crumbs and cheese on top. Broccoli with garlic was real good though. Chocolate espresso dessert was good. The scoop of ice cream was barely visible. Forced to go there. No other restaurants in the area. Overall it was ok.
Chicken sandwich wasn't anything special. $13.00. In all fairness, other menu items looked good. The $9 peanut butter pie looked good. Edit 2/11/23: LOL forgot I left the above review 4 years ago. Had the meatloaf sandwich today and it was a disappointment. The bacon wasn’t crisp at all so you try to bite through it unsuccessfully and the whole piece pulls out of the sandwich. The meatloaf had little to no seasoning. The tomato marmalade on it was good, just needed more of it. And the bun was very good. The Brussels sprouts were fantastic. If you don’t like Brussels sprouts, try these. Friend had the Jalapeño hangar steak and really enjoyed it. Edit: 2/12/2023: Yes, ate here two days in a row. Easy walk from the Fairmont. Sunday brunch was a great variety. My favorite was the bread pudding. Plenty of sweet, savory, breakfast and lunch selections. If you’re price sensitive, be aware that when the waiter offers you options, it’s not included in the buffet price. Edit: 9/16/2023 Salad was excellent. Biscuit recipe skimps on salt. No one wants a low flavor biscuit. and look how beautiful it is. They’re a fraction of a penny away from a perfect biscuit.
It’s hard to do chicken fried steak right, and this place is evidence of that. The apps were good, decent drink list, reasonable wine prices but the red list is US centric. It’s a fine place for the prices and location but if southern comfort food is your schtick then you really need to nail your $25 chicken fried steak.
Friendly service. Bar available. Specials available. I had the horseradish crusted salmon with brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts were delicious. I didn't feel that the horseradish added anything to the salmon. My husband had the chicken fried steak and said it was good... and even better heated up.
Great service and atmosphere! The food presentation looked good, but the taste was too salty. The complimentary popcorn was very salty. We ordered three appetizers, and two of them—the fried green tomatoes and panko fried pickles—were also heavy on salt. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enjoy our entrees because the appetizers were overpoweringly salty. It’s disappointing because Moonshine is an Austin favorite. I visited many years ago and remembered it tasting better than this latest experience.
The devil eggs were super spicy and could not eat. I got Mac n cheese was horrible. Husband got burger was ok. My son and his wife got chicken sandwich was good and big pieces of chicken. Biscuit and peach preserves were good. Popcorn good. Parking not too good had to valet. I personally wouldn't go back.
The waffles were really good but the chicken was disgusting. It was 1 minute away from being burnt. I am not a picky person and have tried a lot of chicken and waffles in my days but this one was not it. My husband got the chicken fried steak and it was pretty good. The meat is good quality. It’s southern food with an uptight Austin twist to it. Not necessarily a bad thing but if you’re going for grandmas southern cooking, this isn’t it. It took literally took well over 30 minutes to get our food on a Tuesday night :/ the place wasn’t even packed either. Extremely disappointed considering you also have to pay for parking down the block because there’s so much construction around the restaurant. Or you could pay $14 for a valet. Also the music extremely loud, I could barely hear my husband sitting right across from me. Kinda disappointed on the experience but would be willing to give it another try.
Interesting place. I had high hopes based on the info and reviews from Google Maps. The food looked good. Staff was friendly. Ordered an unsweet tea, but it took almost 10 minutes to receive it. The tea was flavered, which I was not warned about. It was actually good but tasted sweet. I felt ot had some suger in it or was mixed with one that had suger. It's not really a big deal. I ordered the chicken fried steak, mac and cheese, and the hot honey sweet potatoes. The chicken fried steak arrived hot but lacked any real flavor beyond a slight spice. It had a good presentation, but that's about where it ended. The mac had a grainy or chalky texture instead of a creamy one which by the looks it should have had, the sweet potatoes arrived room temp and not any hot honey on it, honestly not even a glaze of any kind on them. I even asked the waiter if that's the way there were supposed to be, just to be sure. There were a couple of cornbread muffins delivered to my table after the food arrived. It was a nice surprise, but unfortunately, they were also cold and dry. Even the butter was lack luster and couldn't help them. All in all, it was very unexpected and a surprising to how things turned out. I definitely could not recommend it to anyone, unfortunately. I understand that nobody is perfect, but I would expect some things to go well. Unfortunately, it was all off.
I liked the reviews I'd read. Went there for lunch. In a restaurant that was not crowded we were seated next to an annex door that opened to the outside, on one of those cold Austin days, post the ice and snow. And staff CONTINUALLY came in and out of it. I had to keep my coat on. The popcorn was fun. I ordered the trout with cornbread. I didn't pay attention to the "seasonal vegetable " side. I should have asked, and the waiter should have said "is broccoli ok?" It wasn't and I would have asked for some other side. There was more unseasoned, al dente broccoli on that plate than I've ever seen! Plus it was boiled or steamed and the liquid run off from it blended with the cornbread dressing ruining it and the fish. I only ate half the entree and none of the broccoli
