The vibe at Sammie’s Italian is absolutely fantastic! From the moment you walk in, it feels exactly how a classic Italian restaurant should—warm, lively, and full of character. The atmosphere is intimate and bustling, which adds to the charm and makes it feel like a hidden gem in the heart of Austin. The food did not disappoint—the salad, in particular, was unbelievably good, packed with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. The service was outstanding as well. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and taken care of throughout our meal. It is a smaller, more crowded space, but that’s honestly part of the appeal—it feels authentic and energetic. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would definitely recommend Sammie’s to anyone looking for a great Italian spot in Austin.
I had lunch on a Friday at Sammie’s and loved the experience! They had beautiful live music, and a very cozy, Italian vibe and decor, and to leave the best last, the food was amazing! Their shrimp appetizer left me wanting more, and the bolognese is the best I have ever had. My friends all loved their dishes, and service was excellent, we will definitely be back to try more!
Someone suggested this place on social media and I'm so glad I took note of it. I came in for dinner tonight and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect. No need to worry about finding a parking spot as they have valet for a small fee. The ambiance is that what you would expect of a quaint Italian restaurant. I sat at the bar and the lighting was very dim in that area. I had to take picture of the menu so that I could actually read it on my phone. That is my only slightly critical comment. The bartender was very attentive, and my glass never went empty. They have an extremely extensive menu for any wine enthusiast. I ordered a caesar salad and the chicken parmesan. Both were probably the best I've ever had anywhere. Perfectly seasoned, full of flavor and portions. Both could have been split and shared, but now I have dinner for tomorrow. I'll definitely have to come back to try something else equally as delicious and save room for dessert.
Felt like I was in New York, the vibe was wonderful! But most of all the food was phenomenal. The caesar salad was one of the best I have ever had. Even my husband was blown away and he isn’t a big caesar salad guy lol. For my main entree I got the cacio e pepe and it was perfect. Perfect! Service was wonderful too! I want to come back and try more entrees and come on the night they play live jazz.
Amazing food, great service, smaller portions than I’ve usually had around the area but nonetheless it was solid and filling. We had a reservation set months in advance and it was for outdoor seating but due to the rain they were able to get us sat asap and inside which was great! Thank you guys.
I’ve been hesitant to try another Italian restaurant in Austin because I haven’t found any good ones to be honest. When I decided to give Sammmie’s a try I was skeptical, but open. Started out with the Meatballs which were delicious. Got the lumache, mafaldine, and Torta Di Nocciole for dessert. I had trouble ranking the order which I liked because they were all so good and blew my expectations. The torta was also so delicious and competed with my favorite bite of the night. The only hiccups I have are the amount to mushrooms to pasta ratio was a bit high on the mafaldine. The other issue was the atmosphere. The music is very loud and obnoxious. When you go to an Italian restaurant, typically you would expect to be serenaded with some old Italy sounds, but here it’s rap or other random music blasting. Being so loud, people have to talk over it increasing the general volume of the experience. I would recommend to management to change the music and lower it. Besides that, it was very delicious and it’s the only Italians spot I would go back to again. Do make a reservation and enjoy some fresh pasta.
My husband and I had a micro-wedding last month and had our reception dinner here on their veranda. Everything was incredible! Sammie’s offered a very generous and extensive menu for our event and we received a lot of great feedback from our guests. We had so much leftover food that we froze some portions of the pastas and we’ve been reheating it — still tastes incredible! So glad we chose Sammie’s for such a special day.
The bread was incredibly fluffy, the Cesar salad was delicious and big enough to share, I had the chicken parm, perfectly done with a tangy flavorful marinara and fresh mozzarella, spaghetti cooked perfectly al dente. My husband had the veal marsala more savory, balanced with the tender mushrooms. Everything was so well done. Encapsulating the classic comfort dishes while offering a more elevated experience to give it that special occasion feel.
My family and I recently stopped by Sammie's Italian for a meal, and we had a truly fabulous experience. We did make a reservation, which I'd highly recommend as tables fill up quickly! Despite arriving at a slightly less ideal time for a full meal, I opted for a lighter selection, and everything I had was absolutely delicious. We started with the mozzarella sticks and the calamari, both of which were perfectly crispy and flavorful. For my main, I enjoyed the delightful cacio e pepe, and we also savored their fresh and well-dressed Caesar salad. Their cocktails were also excellent! The restaurant boasts an extensive wine menu, and we were impressed that they have a sommelier on staff to offer appropriate suggestions, enhancing the dining experience. What truly elevated our visit was the exceptional service. The staff was incredibly nice and attentive throughout our meal. A special shout-out to our waiter, Kale, who was absolutely great! I cannot wait to go back to Sammie's Italian. If you're in the mood for fantastic Italian food and top-notch service, I would highly recommend this establishment!
Stopped here while walking downtown Austin. Don't think they aren't busy by the way the restaurant looks outside. If your going, be prepared to wait for a table (but you can seat yourself at the bar or at the counters behind the bar which is where we sat). With that being said it's definitely worth the wait. Great environment and great service. I shared a lasagna plate with my son, and it was enough for both of us. Tasted great and was very filling. As well, the bread was so moist and savoring. It's definitely unique and you'll be hard pressed to find bread served so fresh, moist, different, and the taste will have you asking for more.
There are few restaurants where I leave feeling thoroughly impressed by everything. This place was one of them. The main reason being our server Dustin. What a gem of a person! He gave us outstanding recommendations and even went into the history of certain wines and liquors. He made our whole experience so much fun! Food, drinks, dessert, everything was DELICIOUS. Great ambiance for a date night. A must try in Austin.
My boyfriend and I had a romantic dinner at Sammie’s, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Austin. The restaurant is beautiful and full of charm. Make sure to book a reservation — it gets very busy — but it’s absolutely worth it. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere made our evening feel truly special. We had an amazing time and would gladly come back on our next visit to Austin!
World Class Italian! Service was impeccably friendly, food was stunning, full authentic flavour, I had the veal marsala, adored that it had no cream, or flour in the sauce, just rich flavourings, a beautiful cut of veal, and a side of spaghetti to soak it all up. Wine list to match. Atmosphere was a perfect mix of low light, swank, yet relaxing enough to let your belt loose. I feel this place could be both a special occasion, or a casual dinner. I’m really grateful for such a wonderful dining experience, that I’ll remember forever. Love from New Zealand
I definitely underestimated this place. I took myself on a little self date here expecting semi-passable Italian food. What I got was expertly executed and delicious Italian. Though traditional in menu, the chicken Piccata was the best I have ever had outside cooking it myself. I didn't know what I wanted after my initial wine so I told the bartender (Tavi?, Travis) three words of what I liked and he delivered the absolute perfect cocktail. Oh and last but not least the lemon sorbet was great and I think it was the best biscotti I have ever had, high compliments since I have traveled to Italy! 10/10 want to come back here for a date night with my husband!
Sammies lives up to every glowing review it gets! No other mozzarella stick will taste the same after trying theirs. Also, the portions are gigantic!! Everything on the menu can be shared, so I think everything is well worth the price especially considering the quality. The service is flawless. Our waiter Kale treated us like old friends and made the experience so fun and special, all during a packed dinner rush. Truly memorable experience all around!
Came here for our anniversary in November (late review), and it was incredible. The hostess greeted us right away and was very friendly. We loved the ambiance, and the small details really stood out—like the cute card on our table that said “Happy Anniversary.” It truly is the little things that make all the difference. The service was okay—not the very best we’ve had, but definitely not the worst either. Overall, it was a lovely experience, and we would absolutely come back again.
We've been to Sammie's multiple times since moving to the Austin area 10 years ago. We keep coming back, so that should tell you all you need to know. Such a cozy atmosphere with immaculate vibes. Food is absolutely delicious. Elevated but not fussy. Service is always impeccable. I dream of the Malfadine. Best Caesar Salad in town. I still can't quite figure out the secret, but there's something magical happening.
Sammie’s feels like stepping into a classic, old-school Italian supper club in the best way. The pasta is rich and perfectly executed, the seafood is fresh, and the martinis just hit different here. The dim lighting and retro vibe make it ideal for a date night or celebratory dinner. Service is polished and attentive, which elevates the whole experience. It’s indulgent, a little glam, and absolutely worth it. Keep in mind it’s very noisy here 😉
We had such an amazing experience at Sammies. From the moment we walked in, everything was perfect. We started with the shrimp and calamari as appetizers both were incredibly fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. You could really taste the quality. For the main course, we had the truffle pasta and it was absolutely phenomenal. Creamy, rich, and beautifully balanced — easily one of the best pasta dishes we’ve had. Everything was spot on, from the food to the atmosphere. And a special thank you to our server Olcay and Hakan they were attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. Thank you for such a wonderful evening. We’ll definitely be coming back!
SAMMIE’S! Very authentic, rare, Italian experience. Coming from a grandfather and family from the “boot”, IYKYK, this is your dinner place. Dark ambiance. Pictures are hung everywhere. Large dishes to share. We were luckily able to score reservations last minute on a Sunday. We were a hungry group of four girlfriends. We tried the calamari, the shrimp francese, caesar salad, chicken vodka parmesan, clams and linguine, cacio e pepe, and red snapper. We ate like queens, the cocktails were excellent. Great service. Highly recommend for authentic Italian in Austin.
Everything was so good! We tried Caesar salad as suggested by most customers. That’s very flavorful. Also tried calamari, clams linguine, classic raviolis. All above expectations. And the portion is bigger than we thought… Shared a piece of tiramisu- the texture was on the runny side that stands out from other Italian restaurant. I liked it too. Will definitely bring family and friends to visit again!
We had a great dinner at Sammie’s tonight. Our waitress was absolutely fantastic. A bee flew onto one of our guests and she helped escort him off, so sweet! The food was also delicious. Our favorites were the Caesar salad and the mafaldine. The toffee cake was absolutely a highlight as well. I would definitely recommend this to others for a date or girls night!
My wife and I dropped in on a Monday night with no reservation--it was packed, but there's always a chance to wait for a seat at the bar, and we got lucky--no more than 10 min. We ordered some great drinks--a classic Negroni and some other appertif concoction I enjoyed--some Focaccia bread was brought out and then we ordered dinner...I had linguini and clams while my wife had the manicotti. Both were superb, and we some wine with our meal, shifting to amaroni and a nice peated whiskey and espresso to end things. This was a great experience--the food and drink were what you'd expect from the Mcguire Moormon restaurant group, but the service by the staff, from hostess to the bar, was just downright warm and friendly. I can't believe Hutts is gone, but I appreciate the replacement. We'll return for sure.
Hands down the best Italian restaurant in Austin! Wonderful server and location in the wine room which was quaint and quiet. We arrived right at 5PM without a reservation and they offered us a table as long as we agreed to be done by 6:30PM. No problem enjoying a relaxing dinner without feeling rushed. Very nice wine selection! The Schrimp Francese, Ceasar Salad alla Tommy, Lumache alla Vodka, Ravioli Bolognese and Chocolate Cake were all FANTASTIC! We can’t wait to come back. Sammie’s is the best!
Best Italian place in Austin, period. The food is bonkers amazing…definitely at the quality level of the Italian Market in Philadelphia. The last time my wife and I went was for Lunch on Friday…there was an amazing party vibe inside! They even had live music. Tremendous all around. I love this place.
The most superb meal I’ve had in 5 years. The worst thing on the menu was the best I’ve had, cudos to the chef. Family owned and greatly appreciative of their clients is what keeps this business 100. If you want to take the food home, THEY box it for you. How many restaurants do that?
It was an amazing dining experience. The food was stellar and service top notch! I want to go back and have just dessert because I filled up on all the amazing dishes and couldn't eat another bite! Thank you to Chef Ricky and bar staff, where we sat, for an amazing experience. We will back again and again!
It was so nice to find good home style Italian in Austin. Coming from the east coast Sammies was refreshing. The Caesar with garlic and chili oil is something to behold. The mozz sticks.... Jesus. The lasagna was as good as home made. Drinks were all great. I want to talk about the service though. Dustin is a god damned national treasure. That man has so much charisma it should be illegal. Sammies take care of my boy he is special. Anyway this place is a treat. I will be back for sure. I can't wait to try more.
Went here for my birthday dinner and everything was perfect. Our waitress was wonderful, and food was delicious! Not sure why this place gets mixed reviews, but I love it. As someone who is obsessed with tiny NYC Italian restaurants, this Austin gem is the best option for that vibe!
We had reservations for 4. Were nicely seating at a round table with plenty of space and easy to talk. Service was excellent and everyone loved their dish.
Great service and amazing crew! The food was delicious and the drinks are amazing. Every taste and bite is worth the price. Sammie’s Italian is one of the top fancy places I would recommend for a special occasions or a fine dinner. It’s definitely A Little Taste of Old Italy in Austin, Texas! First time, Dustin: an amazing server with a sense of humor and entertaining. Second time, Jenny: it was a busy night for her but she was just as good as Dustin and super sweet.
Went to Sammie’s for my birthday and went during the Friday lunch. The vibe were immaculate and the rigatoni bolognese was delicious. They also had NA drinks!! The Venetian spritz was yummy. But honestly? Every day I wake up and think about their Caesar salad. Every. Day. Pictured: the Caesar salad of my dreams
We dined here last week and had a blast. The vibe, the wine, the food were all amazing. We had the calamari and chopped salad to start and both were incredible and flavorful. We had the clam pasta and pasta with vodka sauce for our mains which were just as amazing. This is one of our fave spots and we’ll definitely be back!
My favorite food is Italian and Sammie’s did not disappoint. I loved the food there. The portions were huge and delicious. I recommend the Sautéed Clams, Shrimp Francese and Sammies Lasagna. The service was great. There’s an outdoor patio and indoor seating. They occasionally have live music as well. Great experience overall!
I went here for my anniversary and I was so pleased with my experience. Everything was great - our waiter gave us complimentary glasses of Prosecco for the occasion and that really set the mood for the night - she was excellent, didn't rush us, super attentive, exactly what I'd want from the experience. Onto the food, I started with the mozzarella sticks, ordered a drink, got the chicken parmesan, and ended with the tirimisu - It was all so good. I really like the pesto ranch that came with the mozzarella sticks and the chicken parm reminded me of the one my mom used to make me when I was younger, which made me really happy. Ending with the tirimisu was a good call because the cream was super sweet and the cake part of it had a great coffee flavor - probably one of the best tirimisus I've had in the US. Overall, I loved the experience and will be going back the next time I have a special occasion.
Mr Blake and the other bartenders were super nice and thoughtful! We had drinks and desserts and the sticky toffee was amazing! Highly recommend!!
Sammie’s is always a good time. Loved sitting at the bar, great vibe, friendly service, and excellent Italian food. Everything felt easy and well done, from the drinks to the pacing to the atmosphere. Classic, cozy, and consistently solid. Would absolutely come back.
If you’re craving authentic Italian comfort with a modern Austin twist, Sammie’s Italian delivers in every way. From the moment you sit down, the atmosphere feels lively yet classic, perfect for date night, celebrations, or just a great dinner with friends. We started with the Sautéed Clams & Arrabiata, tender, savory clams in a zesty sauce that paired beautifully with warm focaccia. The Yellowtail Carpaccio was fresh and elegant, and the Fried Calamari with lemon and arrabiata was crispy and perfectly seasoned. On the salads front, the Caesar Salad à la Tommy had punchy flavor, and the Sammie’s Italian Chopped Salad was a refreshing, bright bite before our mains. For pasta lovers, the menu is a dream. The Rigatoni Bolognese was rich and hearty, the Lumache alla Vodka creamy with great depth, and the Linguine Vongole was the best expression of seafood pasta we’ve had in Austin, briny, balanced, and comforting. The Sammie’s Lasagna was cheesy and satisfying, and the Spaghetti & Meatballs had that nostalgic, homemade feel. Their specialties, like Chicken Parmigiana and Veal Piccata, are classics done right: generous portions, well-executed flavors, and utterly comforting. To finish, the desserts were just as memorable: Tiramisu was rich and silky, and the Pistachio Cannoli had just the right crunch and sweetness. All in all, Sammie’s is a standout in Austin’s Italian scene, warm service, a fantastic menu full of both timeless favorites and standout signature dishes, and a vibe that makes you want to come back again and again.
I have been dying to try Sammie's Italian in Austin, Texas ever since it opened during COVID, and I finally got the opportunity to dine there TONIGHT. Located on West 6th Street in the former Huts Hamburgers location, which closed in October 2019 to make way for the swankiest and most spoken about Italian restaurant in Austin, Sammie's feels like New York City's Little Italy. Replete with a glamorous, but small bar, you can usually get a walk in spot there right at 5 when they open. I had a reservation, and as I went to my table, I noticed waiters in red jackets with white shirts and black ties. All the staff were friendly, and they brought me warm focaccia bread and breadsticks while i waited for my friend. I arrived right when Sammie's opened at 5pm, and it was empty, by 530, half of the seats were full, and when I left at 7pm the place was PACKED. We started with the mozzarella sticks, paired with a mundane marinara - but thankfully also with a delicious ranch with homemade pesto that leaves you begging for more. The Caesar Salad was humdrum, but had a nice bite of lemon in the dressing, which was over what appeared to be half a head of baby Bibb lettuce. For my main course, I had the lasagne, which could be shared by 2-3 people. I am fine with this, because I can go home and put this in the fridge and have tomorrow for leftovers but if you order it yourself, plan on finishing about 20% of it on your own. Just saying. My friend had the Mafaldine with Funghi and Tartufo, which is a pasta with a mushroom cream sauce and copious amounts of black truffle on top. The dish was VERY RICH. Just saying. For our finale, we had the Tiramisu, which was a fantastic end to the meal. As you bit into it, you got hits on the alcohol, coffee, cream and cake in all the right amounts. Paired with an espresso or limoncello, this final course is the FOODIE way to end the meal on a high note. There is also outdoor seating - they do have heat lamps. I would give Sammie's a 8.5/10 - the food could have been better, but the service, ambience and overall prestige make it a MUST DO in Austin, Texas
I can't express how delicious that place is... the Ceasar salad was literally the best salad I ever had in my life. The calamari was cooked perfectly, and the marinara sauce was not too bold and not too tangy - just perfect. This place would be great for a date night or a celebratory family dinner. A little on the pricy side, but totally worth it.
10/10!!!! From to atmosphere to management this place ROCKS!! A***ew (I don’t think Google lets you name names) was our waiter and he knocked it out the park. We always had quick service everyone was there to help. We got our orders taken I highly recommend the apps and our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu from food to wine nothing disappoints. I HIGHLY recommend the shrimp app and adding noodles for an main dish (off menu secret) the deserts are unreal. Such amazing experience like always at Sammie’s can’t wait to be back!!
Loveee this place! The bartenders Blake and Manu made my night. Staff is so friendly and the food is phenomenal, the Caesar and chicken Joe Leoni are a must! Will be returning :)
LOVE Italian food & like 2 have it ONCE in a WHILE. I was TOLD this was a GOOD PLACE 2 have sum GOOD ITALIAN FOOD & w/GOOD PORTIONS. I had LASAGNA, I've had sum BETTER @Oliver Garden (as e.g.). But I still LIKED the PORTION & with a lil MORE🧂, it tasted BETTER. GR8 CUSTOMER SERVICE (ONE of the BEST, if NOT the BEST in TOWN!!!), EXTREMELY ATTENTIVE & a VERY PLEASANT EXPERIENCE. I'LL DEFINITELY BE BACK. ☝👼👌
Excellent food, great atmosphere, and professional service. The food was fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. It’s clear the team takes pride in what they do. One of the best Italian spots in Austin — highly recommend.
Our server Michael was great, I highly recommend requesting him! He accommodated us very well when I began to feel unwell and made our anniversary celebration extra special. The food was delicious, the rigatoni was amazing and the tiramisu was the best i’ve ever had!
This place is by far, the best Italian restaurant in Austin, classic Italian American food with a fabulous Red sauce design and food. Strait out of Goodfellas this place is a marvelous ode to New York's Italian-American culture. Once again, fabulous place. And a note to the men, where a suit and tie.
Fantastic dinner here! If you are looking for that old-school Italian restaurant from New York, here ya go. The food is amazing, tasting like someone's nonnina's recipes were being used. And the portion sizes are not to be played with either, because they do recommend, as well as I do, going family style and sharing plates which is how traditional Italian restaurants work. And pair that with the wine list, which is outstanding. And to learn the amount of knowledge the servers know and then learn they haven't even passed the introductory course for the Court of Master Sommelier yet, is impressive, to say the least. When you are craving that great Italian food in Austin, this place is where you want to be.
Simply one the best restaurants in Austin. Unique and iconic atmosphere, speakeasy quality cocktails, the most attentive and knowledgeable servers. All that, and the food is the best Italian in Austin. Huge portions with dynamite flavor. Overall just a great place to eat.
Finally a 5 star experience after a few duds. This was a business dinner with some colleagues from the marketing department. We were 5 of us and wanted to do stuff community style. Firstly our server Dustin. He was so knowledgeable about the food, the wine and also about the other establishments in the area. He also politely managed to up sell the group on the wine which in reterospect seems like a good decision. Appetizers: Burratta - this is likely a tie for the best burratta I've ever had. I could have gotten myself another portion. Mozzarella sticks: not your run of the mill stuff. Right level of crispiness, softness and mozzarella. It was perfect. Entrees One was the off menu pasta (I think it was ox) The other pasta was the truffle one. Both these were on point and recommended by Dustin. Porterhouse and NY strip with broccoli. Perfectly seared, medium rare and prime meat. I don't mind paying money for a perfectly well made steak. Desserts: See the photos. I'm off sugar so didn't touch it. But the guys said they were heavenly. My mouth was watering looking at them and they did appear decadent.
Sammie’s is simply the best Italian food that I’ve had so far in Austin. We started with the best mozzarella sticks I’ve ever had. Super crispy and super cheesy, and a delicious spicy arrabbiata sauce to dip into. The rigatoni bolognese was delicious and the chicken piccata was cooked just right.
Sammie's is a wonderful Italian restaurant in downtown Austin. Everything on the menu is excellent from the Caesar salad to the pasta (great gnocchi) and entrees like the Chicken Parmigiana. Definitely a must visit if you come to Austin and a must go if you live here and have not been yet!
Sammie’s was delicious! The Caesar salad had a bit of a kick, mozzarella sticks were delicious with the pesto ranch, and the vodka pasta had a kick to it too. However, I can’t give it 5 stars because it’s definitely overpriced. The food isn’t life-changing. Also, the place was so loud that I feel like our group had to shout to hear each other. Overall, I enjoyed the meal but wouldn’t make it a must-stop in Austin.
Small intimate restaurant with great service. I had the mozzarella sticks as recommended by most. They were bland and I didn't find anything exciting about the marinera sauce. It lacked flavor but was perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey (cheese) on the inside. I don't recommend unless you prefer bland sticks. The lasagna and bread were good and large enough to share. There was a good amount of cheese and a slight char on the edge which I enjoyed as it was not a burnt taste. There was flavor/seasoning in the lasagna. It's not overbearing but just enough. The bread is fresh and delicious. One piece was ro temperature but a bottom piece was cold. I found it odd to be cold but it didnt bother me it was still delicious. The staff were all professional and attentive (except 1 in regards to his attentiveness). We had 3 different staff speak to us and ask how everything was. One,which I believe was part of management, noticed our drinks needed to be refilled. Our glasses were not empty long but he quickly noticed and asked if we wanted a refill. Our waiter, Mia, checked on us regularly and was very nice and knowledgeable. Great service I definitely recommend this spot due to their high quality customer service! The food was good - lasagna and my friend enjoyed the shrimp appetizer and the chicken parmesean meal. The place is very loud as it is a small space. Parking is not good so plan accordingly. I was able to snag a spot on the street on a Monday around 7pm. Reservations seem hard to get but I did notice a couple empty seats around 8pm so maybe that's a good time to try to walk in for dine in. Overall nice relaxed spot with a great wine selection, good food and great customer service.
The service was great & the place has nice ambience. But, the cheapest dinner dish is lasagna - $40! Chicken parm & pasta dishes were over $50!! They don’t even come w bread or salad. RIDICULOUS pricing for food that has less quality & taste than Olive Garden.
I called ahead and asked to seat at the bar cause I didn’t have a reservation. Both of the hostesses were nice and they sat me quickly. My bartender was great. I asked for a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu and this one is tricky cause not everyone can do it the right way. He mastered! It had perfect ice chips in it and he didn’t even doubt it when I asked if he could make me a bees knees. The food came out quickly and they were packed. A lot of flavor, a good portion. This place doesn’t get 5 starts from me cause it was way to dark. Is it a restaurant or a bar(?) Also is VERY loud. This nearly disturb me and i was there for an hour or so but I dare to say this could be stressfull for other people and your own staff.
The restaurant use to be home to Huts Hamburgers. A shame, they will be dearly missed. Sammie's is an old style Italian restaurant, think tomato sauce on almost everything. I had great expectations for this restaurant, given its owners. But it only turned out to be average. The food ranged from bland to too salty. The bread offering is cold like it just came out of a refrigerator. The dish below is their interpretation of lasagna. I would call it a lasagna pancake. Tasteless and almost no meat. I doubt I'll be back.
Wanted to have a special family dinner with 4 of us and did research and this is what was picked. Reservations was a $40 hold if we didn’t show or cancel less the. 24 hours . It is very pricey for sure and not the quality was quite worth that. Everything was delicious don’t get me wrong and service was great, it just was $$. The wines are insane with the selection and I honestly could not even tell what types where what , so I had to ask for a recommendation. The bottle range from $70-$3100 a bottle . This place is small a bit crammed and very loud you can’t here a waiter if u less they yell a bit. It’s was a nice experience and I enjoyed taking my kids to a nice restaurant and allowing them to have a culinary experience.
Food ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4) The food was delicious. If you don’t mind spicy food I’d give it 5. However a couple items were identified as being spicy, which I don’t eat and knew to avoid. However, I ordered the Veal Parmesan which was delicious, HUGE, and tender, but it was spicy 🥵 from the very first bite. Normally spicy isn’t a concern with Italian but it was here. With all that being said all the food I tried taste amazing and I look forward to trying the lasagna on the next visit. Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5) Simply great. Whenever a restaurant is newly opened I’m prepared to give some leeway as they work out the kinks. Not a problem here. Someone is always checking on you without you feeling constantly intruded on. Atmosphere ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4) The design is esthetically pleasing. It has the same layout as the old Huts but with a pretty facelift. Love a bar with purse hooks! Only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is because it is LOUD & space. I never realized the old dusty flags and taxidermy dampened so much of the noise. While it is beautiful, it needs some soft surfaces to quiet the small restaurant. With regards to space. Often Italian restaurant tables are a bit larger because of all the items (bread basket & plate, water, add’l beverage, cutlery, and dining plate, etc) the table and bar felt a bit cluttered/claustrophobic during the meal due to small tables despite being promptly cleared. Drinks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5) Amazing, just amazing!! Wine, limoncello, and cocktails. All were delicious and prompt! Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4) Photos: Old Fashioned (L) & Limoncello Drop(R), Veal Parmigiana, & Prawns
First time coming here and we will be back. Make sure to make reservations; you can come without reservations but expect a wait. The interior is something has the "old school" feel to it; old photos cover the walls. Nice music playing (a bit loud). They brought out fresh bread and bread sticks. We had to repeatedly request olive oil and balsamic vinegar but honestly, you don't need them. The bread has a really nice hint of rosemary and they taste freshly baked. We had the Caesar salad and these are quite good. Oddly no croutons or parmesan cheese. It's a delicious salad but just missing the typical accoutrements. We also shared an order of Calamari and it's quite good. For our main entrees, we had Cacio e Pepe, Rigatoni Bolognese and Lasagna. I tried the Cacio e Pepe and I know that is what I'm having the next time we visit here. It's an amazing pasta dish. The Rigatoni was also quite good. For the lasagna, it is good, but honestly, a bit heavy. They do not scrimp on the cheese or meat, but it was heavier on the mozzarella cheese and too little of ricotta (if there was any). The lasagna portion they serve is easily enough for four people, so if you are with a group and want to share a meal, just order one lasagna. We had a variety of drinks and they were mostly disappointing. I do realize it's an Italian restaurant but I would still think they could serve just about any drink. I ordered a cocktail and when it was brought out, I was told "this is our version" and it was bad enough I had to send it back. The server was nice and told me that wasn't a problem. Ended up having a dirty martini with olives. To start off... the olives! I never thought I would complain about olives in a drink but these were not cocktail olives. And the martini was pretty bad and ended up not finishing. One in our party wanted wine and the server was not at all knowledgeable about the wine list. In fact, neither were the bartenders. Their cocktail/wine list is 26 pages and we just didn't have time to review it all. The glass of wine brought out was red and our friend specifically said she wanted something white. I went to the bar and the bartender couldn't give a recommendation. What's the point of this extensive wine list if your employees don't know much about it. I've worked as a server and had to memorize the entire bar menu. We ordered desert and we were going to take it home; My friends had Tiramisu and they said it was the best they have ever had. I had the NY Cheesecake and it was quite good but I don't believe they make it. The downside of our experience was the hostess. Some hostesses seem to feel they wield control and abuse that... as did this person. We did not have reservations and simply just wanted to put our name on a list for anything whether it was outside or at the bar if we couldn't get a table. It was 8pm and were being told 9:30 - 10pm. Although there were three empty tables outside and there were spaces available at the bar, the hostess was being quite obstinate. After awhile, it seemed as if she wouldn't even take our names but ultimately she did take our name and number. After an hour of waiting, we went back inside to see where we were on the list. It was now 9pm and there were plenty of open tables and she sat us right away. The bigger question is how long had those tables been open? I'm 100% sure if we never came back... they never would have actually called us. Extremely poor service by the hostess. I've been to small diners and they will text you updates on your spot on the list. So, if you put your name down on the waitlist, check back frequently because it's likely they will never contact you. Hostesses seem to have a power trip here.
Everything that we ate here was pretty great. I don't generally speak on service, but it was also really good. I'm more of a if the food is good I don't think about the service. This place has the absolute best vodka sauce I've had and I'd definitely reccomend. The lasagna was also top notch. Definitely would go back and reccomend.
Cozy Italian spot in Austin. Small tables, maximum 4 people per table. Ordered a few appetizers to share, the fried calamari were good but the burrata was too salty and drenched in oil. Their signature dish, the chicken parmigiana, was delicious and very large. Would recommend sharing as most dishes come with a pasta side. The breaded shrimp were not special and quite greasy. The cannoli dessert was amazing! Service is attentive and friendly. Prices are high.
First thing to be noted is this restaurant is incredibly loud and cramped. This used to be a hamburger spot and it’s set up exactly the same, they should add some kind of insulation or something to help soften the noise. I could hardly hear the wait staff or even my girlfriend who was sitting right next to me. We started with espresso martinis, which their house one comes with Sambuca and that’s basically the only taste you get—not a fan. For food we started with the meatballs, these were excellent with a rich sauce, 3 to an order. Also got the warm burrata because burrata is my gfs favorite lol. She was not a fan of the warm burrata and felt like it would’ve been much better just served the normal way of cold lol, to me it was like Italian queso. We shared a Caesar salad, which was definitely a good idea-it was pretty large. The salad was also probably my favorite item and dinner 10/10. For entrees we ordered the lasagna and the chicken parmigiana. The lasagna was pretty good but the chicken parm was not. The bottom was soggy and had a weird taste, maybe oil from it being cooked? We told our waitress Mallory about our dissatisfaction with the chicken parmigiana and she was so great and helpful. We switched it with just spaghetti (what my gf wanted) and took it to go. Also they gave my gf a dessert with ice cream and a little donut for her birthday as well. I definitely appreciate Mallory for how she handled our situation. She was great, and had great service all night. Her taking care of us at the end was the icing on the cake. Tbh I would go back probably just for her service alone. Also got tiramisu to go, ate it the next day and it’s delicious!! Definitely one of the best I’ve ever had, perfectly made
First, service is phenomenal. Our waiter was great. I love the atmosphere of the place, the old italian feel is so cool. The food…meh. So overpriced it’s not even funny. $18 dollars for 5 mozz sticks?!? Insane. The bread is good. The brussel sprouts were really good. The lasagna was watery and $40 for this hugeeee portion. Unfortunate. The pasta vodka was okay. Not okay enough to be $35 dollars though. Won’t be back but hopefully they can revaluate the menu a bit.
Ordered mozzarella sticks, arugala salad, malfadine, New York strip, and lasagna. The mozzarella sticks with the arrabbiata sauce were very good. The arugala salad was ok, but I'm not a big fan of arugala. My wife really liked the malfadine, but she wished the sauce was a bit thicker. The steak was ordered medium, and it came out just right. It was tender and very good. The lasagna plate was huge. It could have easily fed two people. It was very good. The only problem I had with it was sauce. There was none. My wife, on the other hand, thought it was one of the best lasagnas she's ever had. The restaurant is small and very cramped. The booths are a bit small. It's also very loud due to its size. It does have a lot of charm. We did experience a bad start. We were seated and watched other tables, who were sat after us, received service before us. I eventually had to speak to the hostess. After that, we did get good service. The food came out quickly. I think the lasagna must have been prepared first. It came out luke warm. On a side note, I also had to ask the valet if they were operating/open since no one was helping us. No one was in line. Having to ask for service twice did kind of leave an unpleasant experience. I know sometimes things happen, but first impressions do have a lingering effect.
So excited to try this place finally, after a month wait! For starters we had the Fried Calamari and Burrata Caprese. Both were good, but the tomatoes were a little hard, unriped. For the mains we shared 3 pastas - Orecchiette with Sausage & Spring Pea Salsa Verde, Pappardelle with Funghi & Tartufo and the Chitarra, which was by far the best pasta - cooked to perfection, and very flavorful. The others - priced at almost $30 each - you can skip. The orechiette had so much pasta water in the bowl, it tasted bland and the sauce on the pappardelle was packed with flavor (you can't go wrong with truffles!), but the sauce separated after sitting for barely 10 min, getting all clumpy & oily. For dessert we had the Tiramisu, which was an absolute delight - so light & creamy, absolutely delicious. Best dish of the night hands down. Their Lemoncello was great, and they made a perfect Negroni. Wine was a bit pricey, but we still splurged for a bottle of Brunello with dinner. Regardless of the menu's shortcomings this time around, I can't go without saying the service was impeccable and the ambiance was superb - lively, and definitely one of the "hot spots" in Austin right now. We'll give it another go after a few months once they've found their footing.
Good food but a bit pricey for what it is. Roasted peppers and anchovy: it was literally a bowl of peppers and anchovies in oil. It was very good but it needed to be served with something to eat it with, we used the served bread. It also had 4 pieces of anchovies, it could’ve used more Mozzarella sticks: they were crispy Campanelle Cacio e Pepe: it was excellent Gnocchi: it was bad. It lacked all flavor Cannoli: it was fresh and not sweet at all (which I prefer) but it felt it was missing something, it was too plain.
Pros: The service is wonderful! The lasagna is delicious when hot and fresh. The drinks are very good. It's an intimate space, and it's great for a date or two friends getting together. Cons: It's SO loud! We went on Friday for lunch, and the band was so loud that we couldn't hear each other or the service speak. The mozzarella sticks, while I've been told were the best in Austin, were not that great. While the lasagna was great in the restaurant, it was terrible as a reheated leftover at home. My friend said her food was fine, but she's had much better at other Italian restaurants in town. Conclusion: While the food and drinks were good, I wouldn't visit again, and I would probably point friends to another Italian restaurant instead of trying Sammie's. If the music wasn't as loud, I might would rate higher and recommend for someone to try, but the noise level ruined the experience of the decent food and really great service.
I had really high hopes for this restaurant and was really excited to score a reservation. I had the spaghetti with red sauce (I’m a vegetarian) and an espresso martini. I was disappointed that the spaghetti wasn’t anything particularly noteworthy, compared to the same dish at other local Italian spots. Our waiter was nice enough, but the restaurant is extremely tiny and cramped and the air conditioning doesn’t work great/when the place is packed it’s hot in there and loud. I enjoyed my meal but probably wouldn’t return as there are other Italian spots in Austin that are easier to get reservations at, have more vegetarian pasta options that are more memorable.
Everything I had here was overloaded with salt! We had the Cesar salad… which was super salty, chicken piccata.. loaded with salt and a bit different than expected, the truffle pasta- really good but super heavy , Alfredo- somehow extra salty as well. Idk if they just had a really off night but because of this we won’t be back. Service was great except when we asked the waitress what to order, she recommended 6 dishes between the 2 of us… it was shocking! We ordered 4 and it was wayyy too much food already. Atmosphere: old school Italian. It’s kind of romantic, but also slightly not because of the space, proximity to others, noise level. But the lights are dim and it’s red inside… so kinda romantic? Price.. $20 for a few pieces of lettuce and Cesar dressing.. $40 for pasta and sauce… you spend your money how you want to but we won’t be back.
We quickly got sit at the Bar B tonight, which was nice! The server took away my water bottle at the beginning of the dinner because apparently you can not bring your own water and I asked him to remind me of it at the end, but he totally forgot about it! So did I. RIP my Water bottle! This kind explains why the service is 1 star because the restaurant is so busy and you will not get a personalized service here, you can clearly feel the server is busy and stressed in a very fast pace! So just keep that in mind. The restaurant is very LOUD, if you are not sitting next to each other shoulder by shoulder, you will have a hard time hearing each other. However, the food is really good here. You will find the most authentic italian food here, way surpass any of the italian restaurant in the austin market. (Red ash is not considered as italian in my opinion, it's more like a steakhouse with pasta options) If you ever crave for pasta or tiramisu, sammie's italian is your go-to!) If they have a to-go option I would take that.
The tables are too close together. It is way too loud. No service worker tries to tell other guests to stop being so loud so other people can enjoy their dinner. went out for a birthday dinner for my boyfriend and it just was so loud food was great though service was good just incredibly overstimulating to be considered a romantic evening. Completely ruined the night
Very cramped and noisy. I ordered the red snapper and asked about the sauce . I was told that the snapper was placed on top of the sauce. This turned out not the case. The snapper itself was a nice piece of fish but was ruined as it was covered in sauce. The dish was very salty. This is a great way to ruin a quality piece of fish. My dining companion requested no hot pepper in the pasta due to a medical condition. However, the pasta arrived with hot pepper. $47 for a piece of snapper, two tomatoes halved and salty sauce = highway robbery. I almost tripped on the step as I was leaving as the table next to us had a chair right at the step with a miniscule about of room to slide by. Servers were irritated as one had to attempt to slide by them in the cramped walkways. Horrible experience; I would not return if you paid me to do so. Extremely loud and noisy. The server seemed new and was pleasant but seemed inexperienced. There are so many other places with better food and atmosphere.
Went there for my birthday dinner the other night, was completely regretting it the minute we sat down. We had reservations but an old lady with a party of 6, with NO RESERVATIONS got sat before we did. My waitress was horrid. Waited a long time till we even got greeted. She was very RUDE. NOT PLEASANT AT ALL. like why be in the service industry??? Couldn’t Even have a conversation with my husband across the table because of a table directly behind us of young girls just screaming in our ears. Not worth the price. Save yourself the trip and the money and dont go here. Plus parking sucks they don’t even offer valet. Wish I could not give them a star because I was completely let down by this establishment, I will be telling Friends not to to come here. Just horrid. And the music was trash I don’t wanna hear NAUGHTY BY NATURE at dinner at an Italian establishment!!!
So… the food was just okay. Salad was off the chart good, except like all the food it’s truly *SPICY* !! WAYYY over spicy, it takes away from the taste you’d expect. The bread/salad/meatballs/chick parm ALL spicy… be warned before you go. It’s truly good looking Italian food, I’ve never had Italian food that’s spicy??? Doesn’t make sense to me in my book, no go… OH and, it’s WAY overpriced. 2 glasses of Pino, meatball appetizer and salad we split, she had the Joe Leoni and I attempted to eat the Chicken Parm => $200 (Most expensive Chicken Parm $45, and sad to say the worst)
Our waitress Lindsey L was rude and impatient. This was very disappointing because my first experience at Sammie’s with our server Kaylee Grace was fantastic and one of the main reasons I wanted to come back, along with the incredible food. Unfortunately, after last night’s poor service, I will not be returning.
My (black) spouse came in and asked to go to the bathroom while we were waiting for a favor (like DoorDash) order. The man at the front desk began to ask if he had an order what was the name and proceeded to not let him go to the bathroom unless He provided the name. I had the order on my phone and was waiting in the car. I came in to give him the name and a customer walked in behind me (light complexion) and he asked to go to the bathroom. The man at the desk gave him a better courtesy and pointed him right to the bathroom without asking if he was dinning in or had an order. The service just made me feel really uncomfortable and I can’t help to think race has everything to do with it. Would never eat here off this experience alone and won’t be picked me up no more orders from here.
