P Thai's is praised for its authentic and flavorful Thai cuisine, especially the Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice). Customers rave about the juicy chicken, flavorful sauces, and unique dishes like boat noodles and chicken skins. The atmosphere is casual and the service is fast.

Tip: Try the Khao Man Gai combo to sample both the fried and non-fried chicken. Be prepared for a potentially long wait during peak dining hours due to a single cashier.

I don’t post often, but this place is spectacular. Plain and simple. What I ate today can only be compared to Sapp Coffee Shop in Thai Town - Los Angeles. A restaurant that no other than Anthony Bourdain claimed as “truly amazing and authentic Thai food in an unassuming strip mall in LA.” Authentic Thai food in the states is sometimes hard to find. And having traveled through Thailand within the last year, I can easily say this is some of the most tasty and authentic you can find for hundreds of miles in any direction.
I loved our meal at P Thai’s! After eating here, it is hands down my new favorite Thai restaurant in Austin. We ordered the Khao Man Gai Combo, Boat Noodles, and the Cry Cry Chicken Salad, and all of our food came out at once in less than 10 minutes. The Khao Man Gai is a very simple and comforting dish, just chicken over rice. I was amazed at the crunch on the fried chicken and the tenderness of the poached chicken! Both were cooked perfectly and paired well with the sauces and broth. The fermented bean ginger chili sauce was especially flavorful, it complemented the chicken wonderfully. I noticed that low reviews are saying this dish is bland and boring, but I think they aren’t appreciating this dish for what it is. Yes, it is simply chicken and rice, but P Thai’s seems to have done a great job mastering this comforting Thai dish and it is delicious for what it is! My only gripe was that our dish didn’t come out very warm and the rice wasn’t remarkable. Next, the Cry Cry Chicken - it was exploding with flavor and spiciness! It has that delicious combination of sour, spicy, and sweet flavors that authentic Thai food carries so well. Go for this if you want to get another dish for some extra tang and spice, my partner said he could’ve eaten another bowl by himself. The Boat Noodles were my personal favorite - a rich and spicy flavor bomb of a noodle soup. It came out piping hot with so many different textures and amazing depth of flavor! The noodles, pork slices, and veggies layer well with the rich broth, and it was almost addicting to eat as I couldn’t put my utensils down. It was an unexpected winner and a must-order! We washed everything down with a green iced tea that was floral and refreshing, a nice switch up from regular Thai tea. We did pay a little over $50 before tip but it was well worth it to me as everything was delicious and satisfying. It is a colorful and vibrant restaurant with nice staff, I 100% recommend going the next time you want delicious and authentic Thai food.
I've visited this place as take out when they were in the corner of the now-shuttered Hong Kong Supermarket. I decided to go to their new brick and mortar and it was just as good as before. I ordered their Khao Man Gai as a "to go" for lunch the next day (very good) and had their Boat Noodles as eat-in. I asked for it to be very spicy and she said, "Okay, extra spicy!" And it was. The only nit is that the pork balls that came with it had an odd aftertaste that some of these commercial balls have. And just a piece of gristle found in the one pork ball. But, it is obviously factory made pork ball, so not going to ding P Thai for that. The noodles, pork and soup were very good. But so spicy I couldn't finish the broth after the noodles and pork were consumed. Included is their latest menu, clipped onto clip boards. Also, half the people coming in don't realize it's counter service and start sitting down before being asked to go to the counter to order. I have my favorite "traditional" Thai place in town. It's nice to have a Thai place that offers things on the other side of the Thai food spectrum.
Hello! This place rules. So flavorful, so well cooked, staff were informative and very friendly. I loved my experience. It was truly an all around great trip. I ordered the Cry Cry Salad, the namesake Khao Man Gai (combo,) and the delectable Khao Ka Moo, and I topped it off with an Ice Cold Draft Sapporo. Split it with my Uncle. I will be back because I want to try everything they have to offer. Thank you so much for what you do. 🇹🇭💙❤️🤍
One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Fried chicken and fried pork were super crunchy and juicy. The sauces were all veey flavorful and the chicken fat rice was rich and yummy. Finally, the Cry Cry chicken was the perfect combo of salty, sweet, spicy, and sour. Will be back for sure next time I am in Austin!
Eveything we tried here was so simple, fresh and tasty. We got the KMG combo and fried pork belly. The KMG combo had both fried chicken and steamed chicken with 2 amazing sauces. The steamed chicken was surprisingly soft and juicy and the fried chicken had great flavor. Their fermented bean ginger sauce was amazing and went great with the rice and chicken. They should bottle up that sauce. The owner and the staff are really sweet and nice. They offered us to taste their pork jungle curry which was spicy with a nice kick and really delicious.
It is different from another Thia restaurant! The food was really tasty and fresh and the friendly service ever! The fried Chicken was awesome and crispy! You can order first and sit at the table where you want to! Water is self-service and the two types of water(lemon water and just water) jars indoors and outdoors. They have some drinks and beer options! The tables are all clean and look cute! 🤗 The parking lots are two sides of the building so don't get stressed!
We took the wings which were super crispy and the chilli sauce added a super spicy kick to it! We also took the crispy chicken skin and the chicken salad which surprised me with the tamarind kick! The roasted chicken with rice cooked in chicken fat was also great! Most food here, especially the noodles had pork broth. Hence we could not taste it. We don’t eat pork.
Ordered the Khao Man Gai Combo with both fried and poached chicken. Excellent. Flavorful and tender. The fat rice is so good. Also tried the fried chicken skins and the pork tongue salad. Fans of chicharrones have to get the chicken skin. So light. So crispy. The tongue salad was tasty, with flavors reminiscent of other cold Thai salads, lime, shallots, garlic etc. Very fresh.
It is very hard to find authentic Thai food in Austin, but P Thai checked all the marks. You may not find regular dishes like Pad Thai or Pad Kee Mao, but you will find something so much better and more authentic. We tried and love the Boat Noodle Soup, Pig tongue salad and Pad Ka Prow Moo (very spicy). Definitely would come back here again!
The “Ba mee moo dang” is super amazing!! I love that chewy noodle!! The menu say this is spicy, but I think it’s good for anyone who can eat just a little bit spicy. And the Thai tea is amazing too!!!!!!
I’ve been here a couple times with my partner and one word YUMMY!!!!!! I highly recommend their Khao Man Gai combo and Khao Gai Yang. The reason you would want to get the combo is because you get the fried and non fried versions of the chicken. Both are mouthwatering for their own reasons. For appetizers I recommend the pig tongue salad if you are adventurous and don’t mind a little spicy. Also their Boat noodles is great as well if you like something fairly spicy. This is a great place for a casual date lunch/dinner or spending time with your family. The vibe is cozy kinda like mom’s kitchen.
Stopped by P Thai's with some friends and had a genuinely enjoyable experience. We ordered at the counter, and the staff was friendly and helpful, making the process smooth. Once seated, they brought our food to the table promptly. We started with the wings—they were crispy, well-seasoned, and a great way to kick off the meal. The boat noodles were a standout: rich, flavorful broth with tender meat and perfectly cooked noodles. The fried pork belly was another highlight—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and not overly greasy. Everything tasted authentic and thoughtfully prepared. The boat noodles, in particular, reminded me of dishes from central Thailand, especially around Bangkok, where this style of noodle soup is quite popular. The fried pork belly also had that classic Thai-Chinese influence that's prevalent in many Bangkok eateries. Overall, P Thai's offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with dishes that transport you straight to the streets of Thailand. Definitely worth a visit if you're craving genuine Thai flavors in Austin.
Amazing Khao Man Gai and Boat Noodles. I'm originally from Portland Oregon and if you've had Nong's KMG, P-Thai's chicken is cooked to perfection but I have to say KMG's fermented soy sauce still wins. Highly recommended if that's your reference point. The Boat Noodles were absurdly hot and if you can get over the authentic heat levels you'll be rewarded with unmatched flavors. I frequently try Boat Noodles where I find them here in the US but if this is any indication of "authentic", then everything I've had until now has just been watered down Americanized Boat Noodles. Steamed dumplings were nothing to rave about but freshly made.
Solid Thai/Chinese chicken and rice plates! Food is comforting and tasty: the poached chicken is lightly seasoned (the traditional way) and very healthy, the fried chicken isn’t dry or overly greasy. The chicken-broth rice is yummy, though a little soggy. The sauces and chicken broth served with the chicken dishes are great. The decor is fun, and tables are self-seated so it’s a great place for solo dining or large groups. Overall a great spot that’s reasonably priced with authentic flavors.
We walked into this place not knowing what to expect, but we had heard they served chicken skins—which is extremely rare to find outside of Louisiana—so we took the chance and drove all the way from Bastrop, Texas to try them out. I also noticed they had a crispy pork belly entrée on the menu that immediately caught my attention. I’m so glad we made the drive because everything we ordered was absolutely delicious 🤤—even the Thai spicy pork noodle dish my wife ordered was full of flavor. The staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was extremely clean. I would recommend this spot to anyone asking for a great Thai restaurant. P Thai’s Khao Man Gai & Noodles—well done! You all will definitely be seeing me and my family again soon.
Cool, interesting restaurant. Nice selection of indoor and outdoor seating. Good selection of tasty Asian fusion dishes. Food is served quickly once ordered, but a single cashier taking orders becomes a bad bottleneck during peak dining hours. Wanted to try a few more dishes, but gave up after seeing the long line. - Cry Cry Chicken Salad - bursting with flavor - Fried Pork Belly over Jasmine Rice - tasty, authentic SE Asian flavors - Boat Noodle - not a fan of this dish. too sweet and too much sauce.
Casual, lightning fast, and delicious. Everything was excellent, including the chicken salad, the roasted chicken and rice, and the dry noodle plate. Staff can guide you if you’re looking to avoid the more aggressively spicy dishes. RIP Vámonos. Long Live P Thai’s.
Delicious Thai style chicken and rice. Large portions with really refreshing broth. I enjoyed the fried chicken plate alongside the chicken skins. The boat noodle was slightly salty but very flavorful. Great atmosphere with colorful walls and decor! Lunchtime on the weekend was very busy! And there is inside and outdoors dining options.
Absolutely epic. Chicken so so flavorful. The spicy sauce that it comes with is so flavorful and spicy. It’s awesome. If you’re looking for a simple meal with flavor, look no further!!

Quite cute Thailand street food environment Supreme food! The white chicken so juicy and smooth and soft. Dumplings make me just Wow out loud! Chicken skin just match with the drinks!

Food is delicious and customer service is amazing. I initially did not like the dish I ordered because it was too sweet but they promptly replaced it for something I liked better, completely my fault for not being aware of the flavor profile of the first dish, but they were super polite and apologetic. It is super rare to get such great customer service so I had to write a review, the place is also super cute and food is great obv :)
I'm not from the area and we stumbled upon this place while searching for a lunch spot. The service was super amazing; She was nice and informative, explaining the menu options. The meal portions were fitting for the price. They are known for their boiled chicken which was tender and tasty. I'd definitely come here again when in town.
It's simply chicken over rice done well. It was juicy and flavorful chicken. We also got the chicken skin which kinda is like potato chips but it was not my thing to be honest. When we came, it was a bit confusing at first because there was no waiter. You order at the counter and the table are first come first serve.
Been here a few times when visiting friends. This place has some really good Thai food! The sauces are amazing, the rice is phenomenal, and you cant go wrong with fried or regular chicken! My only complaint, you cant switch the normal rice with the chicken fat rice 🥲 you can only order and extra thing of rice
September 2024 We decided to visit this restaurant after reading reviews on some Asian social platform. The reviews raved about their chicken rice. The restaurant prepared the chicken 3 ways; the poached, the roast and the fried. Even though the poach chicken was not as moist but I’m happy to taste this preparation in Austin. Fried and roast chicken were pretty good regardless. The chicken rice can be more moist as well. However, we enjoyed the pig tongue salad. Interestingly, I’m curious about the special tax they charged on our bills. My reviews as 5 is very satisfied Taste 4/5 Temperature 4/5 Speed of service 4/5 Cleanliness 4/5 Attentiveness and courteous 5/5. Will I revisit? Very likely Will I recommend? Yes.
ating: 4.1/5 [dine in] There are two parking lots available, with the one in the front being smaller than the one in the back. The front lot was full so we had to park in the back on a late Saturday afternoon. As soon as you walk in, the interior design gives off a strong sense of being transported to Thailand. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well. You place your order at the front, receive a table number, and seat yourself. There's a self-serve water station, along with utensils and napkins, though each table is also already stocked with the essentials. Fried Chicken Skin ($7): I'm not one to order chicken skin but this place does it well. Perfectly fried to a crisp while still maintaining the flavor and richness of the skin. Each piece was a great size--not too small or too large--and full of flavor. It also came with their housemade sweet chili sauce, though I didn’t think it added much. It didn’t pair particularly well with either the chicken skin or the Khao Man Gai. Khao Man Gai Combo ($18): This combo included both poached and fried chicken, served with subtly fragrant chicken fat rice and two sauces: a fermented bean ginger chili sauce and a sweet chili sauce. The poached chicken was decent, but neither sauce really complemented it well. Personally, I prefer the Vietnamese-style Hainan chicken over this version. The fried chicken was just okay; we've had better at other Thai restaurants. Ba Me Moo Dang ($17): Thin egg noodles tossed in Thai-Chinese seasoning, topped with BBQ pork, bok choy, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, green onion, and cilantro, with a side of CK broth. This was flavorful and well-prepared, but the sauce leaned a bit too heavy on the umami for our liking. We actually ended up using it as a dipping sauce for our chicken. The BBQ pork, however, was excellent--tender, flavorful, and well-seasoned. I'm not sure if the CK broth and the one served with the Khao Man Gai combo were the same. They looked different: one was clear with cilantro, while the other appeared more cloudy and slightly grainy. Overall, the food was flavorful enough on its own, that we didn't really need the additional sauces. We ended up so much leftover that we brought home four sauce containers. Soy Nam Jim ($1): This sauce isn't spicy on its own, but the green chilies add a fun kick of heat. Definitely enjoyable. Nam Jim Jaew ($1): Bold and spicy, thanks to the generous amount of dried chili flakes. If you like heat, this one delivers.
We enjoyed lunch here with friends Saturday. Food was pretty good & the place was cute with nice art. The staff was great too. I ordered the combo chicken. See photo!
We went for lunch and got our order fairly quickly. We weren't too hungry so we shared 2 dishes. Loved the khao man gai with soup on the side and tangy sweet sauce that comes with it. Boat noodles had bold flavors, which was good. But too salty for me.

Khao man Gai/ Haianese chicken rice is one of my favorite dishes from Thailand/singapore. I was waiting to have this specialty food in Austin. Unfortunately I am slightly disappointed that the fat rice was very bland and not flavorful at all. The fried chicken was nicely fried and very crispy but low on salt. I think they need to add a bit salt to their recipe. True you are supposed to eat it with the sauce but I want to enjoy the chicken as well. The soy bean sauce with steamed chicken was excellent! Presentation and restaurant is nice but I really hope that they can improve the flavor a bit, it will be one of the Austin’s best Khao Man Gai. Wish you guys the best!
I am sure some people love the food here as I see restaurant being busy when we visited. This food is not my type. If you are used to Thai food, let the name not fool you. Chicken broth tasted funny with oily smell. May be ‘Khao Man Gai’ supposed to taste like that. Parking is another issue. No priming when busy hour.
Khao man gai combo (7/10): The chicken was splendid. The fried chicken had a crispy exterior, and the boiled (or steamed idk) chicken is the way I remember it being from my childhood. However, the rice should have been more fragrant. It felt too close to plain rice. The dark black sauce was the saving grace. Service (6/10): I really like that they used metallic utensils. However the long wait time is unacceptable. Growing up in Singapore, we got chicken rice at school canteens for 1 Singaporean dollar. And they dished them out with incredible speed. Even outside in the hawker centers, the price never crossed more than a few Singaporean dollars. I paid 20 American dollars here, and waited nearly an hour for a rendition that unfortunately was not worth the wait. I get that this is only a soft opening, but that is not an excuse. Perhaps opening with a more limited menu would’ve been the move. For a shop focused on chicken rice, waiting one hour for a $20 plate of chicken rice is unacceptable. There were other issues like the faltering air conditioning, and the sweltering Texas sun. I think those are forgivable given that they’re only soft opening. But the long line for sub-par rice is not cool. The people seemed really nice though. ——@eddythefoodcritic
Ordered the noodle special they had for the day, kway teow gai. Advertised as simple chicken noodle soup and that is what it was. Tender but bland chicken in lightly flavored soup. The ideal healing chicken soup for reviving oneself from illness, not necessarily a dish I want when I dine out. The soup was akin to homemade chicken noodle soup, not restaurant made. The dish lacked richness and the portion was small for the price. Overall average - a good chicken soup just disappointed for somewhere I specifically made a trip to try.
This is a counter service restaurant and the person taking orders couldn't answer questions about what was in the dishes. He basically said I dunno, it's Asian food! You could tell that there was a potential for a great meal because the sauces had some depth and complexity but everything was way over salted! I ordered the one vegetarian item on the menu, Pad Pak Taohu. I got sauteed chinese broccoli stems with bean sprouts in a super salty broth style sauce accompanied by a bowl of steamed jasmine rice. It could have been amazing but the salt....so much salt! The rest of my party had the same reaction. Not worth the hassle. Go somewhere else!
Ordered fried wings, boat noodle, ba mee moo dang noodle and fried pork belly rice. Wings has no flavor except for sprinkle of salt and some type of soy sauce. Both the noodle dishes were nothing special. Taste like something you make quick at home. The fried pork belly was standard but sauce was straight fish sauce with chillies, not flavor except salty fish sauce.
Amazing place, good basic food, nothing to elaborate: plain rice, meat. You order in the cashier, get a number, and the food is delivered. We made a mistake when ordering as one person in our party had allergies, and notice it before the food was served. We asked to change the dish but the cashier guy informed us that they don't refund or change even in not delivered food. We needed to call the manager -the cashier didn't seem to care at all- that was able to fix it. Great manager, but bad cashier service.
We tried the marinated chicken and fried chicken. I was expecting more flavor from the marinade. The cabbage that came with the chicken was good. The fried chicken tasted regular. If you're in the area, give it a try. I did appreciate how they decorated the restaurant, you can see beautiful photographs hanging on the wall.
I was there for the food and everything was too sweet. Actually, everything was sweet. The fried chicken was soggy. Everything else would have been fantastic if it weren’t for the sweetness. Good atmosphere and service though!

I ordered the combo and a pork tongue salad appetizer. The pork tongue salad had flavor, though was a little cold and overpriced. The fried chicken was good, but the other chicken was served cold. The flavors were very basic. My rice was room temperature. Overall very overpriced for a super basic meal and ok atmosphere. Had to find parking on the street. I was disappointed because it had high ratings and great reviews. I just feel like it was seriously overrated.
