Fabulous breakfast in old town Bastrop. I had the standard 2-egg breakfast with French toast and it was cooked to perfection. The potatoes were perfect. My daughter had the omelette and was very happy. Service was outstanding and the place itself was really pleasant. Happy to eat there again any time.
Went in for breakfast, greeted upon entry and seated! My waitress was attentive and very sweet! I loved the atmosphere! My food was amazing! Eggs over medium, bacon and some breakfast potatoes. Along with some blueberry French toast! I will visit here again when I come back to town for work!
We loved this place. Quaint and perfect. The food was delicious. Bailey, our waitress, was attentive and gave us a great history of the restaurant and of Bastrop. We will be back!
Ive been in the Bastrop area 6 months now and haven't wanted to brave the wait. Today I did...and im so glad I did! The food was delicious, staff was amazing, and the place was very clean for being as busy as it was. I'll definitely be coming back 👏👏
Sadly I don't have a pic of one of the best burgers I've ever eaten (w/ blue cheese & grilled onions) cooked to perfection. My daughters Reuben was also the bomb. As were the cheesecakes. Thank you Maxine's crew!!! Did get a pic of the half eaten choc covered strawberry cheesecake...mmm.
Best chicken and waffles I've ever had !!!!!!!!!!!!! Yummy! Post trip edit: It took a little bit of time to get sat with a group of our size but both waitresses were very prompt with getting us taken care of! I wish I got the ladies names since they did such a great job! A read headed woman and a brunette. Both ladies were so friendly and made our visit even more enjoyable! The mimosas were PERFECT! I loved the mason jars for all our drinks too, I feel like it makes it taste better haha While the chicken and waffles are my personal highlight of the day, all the extra sides I got to taste were great! The biscuit was HUGE and made perfectly. Buttery and salty, dense but still very moist. Fried green tomatoes were delicious and so were the sweet potato fries! Our group will be coming back asap!!
I haven’t had a Monte Cristo since the days of Bennigan’s—almost 20 years ago—so my expectations were very high when I saw this much beloved dish on the menu. While this wasn’t quite the nostalgic Monte Cristo I remembered, it was definitely good enough to scratch the itch. It even came with that sweet jam dipping sauce that’s a must with a Monte Cristo. The sandwich had great flavor and held its own, and the fries were perfectly crispy and crunchy. Great rendition of a classic with a homemade take that still hit all the right notes.
I love to travel. Finding new places to eat is a big part of traveling for me. I particularly enjoy finding out of the way restaurants to try. Bastrop Texas is a very nice town kind of off the beaten path but real Texas. My traveling buddy and I decided to try Maxine's for a quick breakfast stop and we were not disappointed. The service was Texas friendly. It's my kind of place. Tidy, clean, comfy with plenty of Texas memorabilia on the wall. I ordered biscuits and gravy with home fries. I know, it's an easy to prepare meal but I have had bad versions so this was a pleasant surprise. Nice crispy potatoes and super tasty gravy on tender, fluffy biscuits. Just the kind of meal you would expect in Texas. Hearty and great tasting. Prices are very reasonable and like I said the service and atmosphere just what we were looking for in the great state of Texas. If you are hungry and in the area you should definitely give it a try.
The food as always is absolutely delicious! The wait is worth it! Breakfast and lunch has never tasted better! The sweet tea is outta this world! The service is wonderful always smiles and quick!! The decorations make the place feel even more like old home and if you get the chance, ask for Linda the server! She's been her for 15 years!!

Great food. Friendly owners. Everything cooked fresh in house and with original recipes! Try the grits best I've ever had. Batter on the chicken is lovely as well.

Second visit here. Love the atmosphere of this place. Staff quickly brings you ice water and their special blend of coffee. Great biscuits and breakfast entrees. Staff was exceptional.

In the area always decide to give a mom and pop place a try for lunch. Very chill atmosphere, service was good even the place look kinda packed at the time. Our server, Natasha was very nice and the food was good especially the fried green tomatoes 🍅 😋 👌
First time to visit & tour downtown historic Bastrop Texas — including our lunchtime stop here at Maxine’s Cafe. Amazing service — very personable & chatty server. Good selection of both breakfast & lunchtime entrees. I liked my Monte Cristo sandwich. My wife & mom split a massive planet-sized chicken fried steak smothered in gravy. Venue is appropriately situated in a historic building with original brick walls. Located on tourist friendly Main Street nestled among other shops.
This place is clearly the most popular eating establishment in the historic downtown, and I expected to be absolutely delighted. After being seated after about a half hour on a weekday, we waited another few minutes before the server came over. The food offerings are extensive, and we settled on Chicken and Waffles, Chicken and Dumplings, and sides of biscuits and fried okra. The food took awhile to get there, but we knew the kitchen was very busy. The chicken and waffles, the huge biscuits, and the fried okra were all very good, though the chicken was left in the fryer a bit longer than I prefer. The Chicken and Dumplings, on the other hand, I simply couldn’t eat. They were so heavily laden with herbs (parsley?) that my usual go-to comfort food was inedible. On the whole, it was a good experience, but now I know what not to order.

Mediocre at best. Very cluttered inside and doesn't look that clean. Food was low average. I'd go for fast food row out on 71 and avoid this place.

Food was good but not worth the wait. We went on a Sunday at brunch and had to wait 1h 20m for a table of 4. The estimate was 30 min. A hot spot like this should have a better idea of wait times IMO There seemed to be other tasty food on Main Street, we should've picked another restaurant.
The food was good depending on what you had. My wife's chicken fried chicken was cooked so crispy she had to pull all breading off to eat it. I ordered the catfish it was tasty. However the tater sauce for the fish was runny and had way to much vinegar in it. Service was good but slow they were real busy it was a Saturday with many people out.
Rolled through here for the first time (August 2025) w/ friends passing through from Houston, and it was… a restaurant. No frills, no thrills. Small-town spots usually have that offbeat, nostalgic charm—sometimes eerie, sometimes endearing. This place flirted with those vibes. As a small-town kid myself, I came in with a respect based on familiarity. Anyhow, the service started strong: our waitress greeted us, SAUR sweet, had our drinks (LUV THE BIG MASON JARS) on the table fast. But suddenly… she vanished. Ghosted. Left on dNd. We sat waiting like marvel fans for a post-credits surprise. An older woman (manager? i assume???) eventually picked up where sis left us at, took our orders, and checked back later after we got our food… Now, about the Monte Cristo sandwich I ordered… I wanted—NO, I imagined a crisp, melty, golden-brown sandwich of magic. What I got was… soft. uninspired. And lowkey tragic . Price wise, $15 wasn’t outrageous, and I’ll always tip b/c service work no joke—but it didn’t DELIVAH the bite I was hoping for. But that’s not the worst of it… let’s get into the “SAUCE”. Babes… That was not jam, sauce, DIP, nor compote. I’m more than positive it was the filling from those store-bought sponge cake shells. I get making do, but this wasn’t a fun twist—it was a “now, who approved this?” moment. Fries? Safe. No complaints there. In the end, we all agreed: come for the small-town charm, maybe roll the dice on breakfast. But for lunch? This one’s a skip
Stopped by when meeting family half way as we needed to grab a bite and it was okay. The good: a variety of foods offered and large portions… Bad: priced high for the quality which is just okay
Met up with an old friend here and the host was super nice but our waitress hardly serviced us and never checked in on us after she handed off our food. She consistently checked in on the two tables next to us asking them if everything was good, if they needed anything. Never asked us how our food was or even looked our way. We were sitting smack dab in the middle of the two tables too. When she asked us if we needed a togo box, we said yes and she came back and just handed us a box while she helped the table next to us put their togo box in a bag. The food was great but couldn't help but feel a sense of racism here seeing that we are both Asian and the tables next to us were not. The only time she was nice was when she handed us the check, guess so she could make sure she got her tip.
Visited town and chose this place for the pies. The chocolate pie was barely chocolate flavored. And the waitress brought this piece of cheesecake and literally said, the center collapsed so this is the best I could do. That’s ok, right?” It was the first piece cut out of the cheescake in the display case, she couldn’t try again for a better slice? And then when I started to eat it I wondered if it was even set in the center, was it meant to be liquid? The outside rim was the only firm part. I just didn’t really know what I was eating. They refunded the chocolate pie. I don’t know if I was actually eating cheesecake or not, so didn’t want to complain. I was just surprised they didn’t care at all about presentation and plopped what looked like something scraped together at home as leftovers. Kid waitresses. All.
Just visited the restaurant today. Server was very kind. However, I ordered the Texas Benny which is supposed to be a Texas version of a Benedict with hollandaise sauce. We waited FOREVER for our f…
My simple breakfast took longer than expected to receive. My giant pancake was burned to a crisp on the bottom side (why would the cook even send it out?) My meal was over priced $21. For 2 eggs, bacon, a cup of oatmeal and a burnt pancake. There also was a screaming child that nobody tried to sooth, it made my experience worse Not worth the $ at all!!!
