Came here specifically for the Kohada and it was beyond expectations! Kohada is kinda hard to find around Bay Area and not many sushi restaurants have them. So I was super grateful to be able to find it here. I rly enjoyed each piece of nigiri, from the sushi rice, to the amount of wasabi being applied to each piece, to the quality of the fish. Owner/taisho was from Japan, and knows the proper technique. Waiter was so nice!!! Gave us such good suggestions for picking the right fish. Owners told us fish are all overnight shipped from Japan and they will rotate based on seasonal availability to ensure the best quality, And I can def tell that from the taste! The price is very reasonable as well. I had an amazing experience and will def come back.
We are so lucky to have this gem in our neighborhood. Jin is an incredible chef, overseeing daily fresh fish flown in from Japan, his omakase is comparable to the Michelin sushi spots in sf. … but for a neighborhood price with neighborhood feel.
Our favorite Berkeley sushi spot. Excellent quality fish and friendly service. We’ve seen Michael Pollan here so it’s gotta be good. They always have fresh fish and kinds that you don’t see elsewhere like Kinmedai and Ayu.
After more than a year of lock-down, we celebrated social liberation with a fabulous sushi dinner sitting at the sushi bar watching the sushi master preparing "Omakase" (chief's choice) assortment of the most delicious and beautifully presented succulent servings of fresh fish east of Japan, all while savoring glasses of fragrant chilled sake from a 1800 ml bottle of Konteki Tears of Dawn Daiginjo - absolutely heaven on earth! Not cheap, but worth every penny spent! In short, the best sushi in the Bay Area!
Jim is amazing Highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar
We felt very spoiled ordering the Omakase (chef’s choice) sashimi. We tried almost every special/seasonal fish they had- and some unique preparations and presentations. Jin took very good care of us. This place was impressive and amazing quality. The fish is flown in overnight from Japan. Very fresh and top quality! Other reviews say it’s the best sushi in the area- I would agree!! Order the omakase.
I absolutely love this restaurant. Chef Jin is amazing - his fish is always fresh and top quality. I have been coming here for years and the experience just keeps getting better and better. Thank you Kamado 🙏
I've been coming here since it opened years ago and it's one of my all time favorite spots. It's not my every-day sushi pick, it's my "I want the good stuff" spot. The fish is incredible quality. I typically get the chirashi because it's a great way to get a sample of some of their great fish, including some you may not typically get at other restaurants, plus they often include some of their incredibly tasty pickled veg and some shiso. This place is so good they make my least favorite things (Ikura) taste incredible. My partner got me their omakase for my birthday one year and it's still one of my absolute favorite birthday dinners. And while the price is by no means cheap, it's also not overpriced. Many lesser quality restaurants charge the same price for substantially inferior fish. I just love this place so much, the charming ambiance, the delectable fish, and the sweet and speedy staff. Everything about it is top tier. Truly a gem of north Berkeley. Editing to add I was there the same night as "Dan potash" and yeah, it was a loud group, but it's a small place. The vibe is mostly pretty chill and the ambiance is usually pleasant. I would not begrudge the restaurant forever for an unexpectedly boisterous group of diners ONE time.
High end service for reasonable sushi prices. Everything was fantastically fresh. The Scallops were perfectly prepared and absolutely sushi-high inducing. The sake was well paired with the meal and custom hand rolls are provided on request. Probably the best sushi quality and definitely the best service in the price range. I highly recommend Kamado for the sushi lover.
I had the multi course chefs special which was $90 per person and was delicious. Fresh fish flown in by plane within two days from all over the world. Best sushi in Berkeley, high end date material
My favorite sushi restaurant in Berkeley so far! They have the largest, freshest, and most interesting selection of sashimi in the area, ranging from tuna toro to ankimi (monkfish liver) to mackerel. They also have a solid selection of rolls, including the typical spider roll and the more uncommon oshizushi (box pressed sushi). I wouldn't come here if you don't want to spend the money, or if you want sashimi and rolls in large volumes. I would come here for fresh and tasty bites, and a new fish to try each time.
If you’re looking for omakase quality sushi without the high price tag, I recommend Kamado! My partner and I ordered 2 chef’s choice (ordered to our table instead of the sushi bar because we wanted a casual dining experience) along with an additional dish (not pictured) for under $200 after taxes. Pretty reasonable for the selection of premium fish you are receiving imo! I’ve been here a few times and their food and service has been consistent. A must try if you’re in the area.

This has always been our favorite sushi spot in the East Bay. High quality and calm vibes.
The best thing about Kamado is its impressive selection of seasonal, imported, and rare fish from around the world. The service is also excellent overall.
Good access to the variety of seasonal fish straight from Japan. We had an ala carte nigiri selection from the daily menu behind the counter. Perfect experience where the fish is prepared well and sake just completed the satisfying meal.

An excellent dinner in every way! The seaweed salad was real seaweed: a melange of 2 kinds and perfectly seasoned. Not the day-glo sweet gloppy stuff that some restaurants serve. The tempura was crispy + crackly, piping hot, plentiful and served with a mild yummy dipping sauce. The sushi was generously sliced, super fresh and melts in your mouth. Our server was attention and friendly but gave us space. The owner and sushi chef, Jin (sp?) is a real gem. He knows his stuff inside and out and cares about his clients. He is there almost every night working at the bar to make sure everyone gets the best of everything. Thank you! You are our favorite sushi restaurant ever!
A small chirashi bowl with fewer than 10 pieces of sashimi costs $30, the same as the Unagi Don. While both dishes tasted good, they were on the expensive side. Salmon and Hirame nigiris are about the average.
The food was ok, just wasn't hitting the mark on flavor. 2 dishes were dry and a little bit to much char from the grill. Service was excellent, so nothing wrong with thar. Just missed the mark on the food being good with that price. Was giving it a 3, but the real crab and the service bumped it to a 4.

Was very unimpressed, especially after reading all the amazing reviews. Tried many things here, chriashi, katsu don, multiple rolls, etc, but all were just acceptable, but for above average prices. The fish was somewhat fresh, some pieces were definitely not as fresh as others. The katsu don was extremely disappointing with very dry meat. Wouldn't really recommend, you can find better sushi / Japanese food elsewhere. Food and prices were only worth two stars, however service and hot towels added an extra star.

First time at this place, chosen according to locality and the reviews. Decided to order my first ever omakase, which was delicious and special, albeit expensive. Which is to say, with that and the poor service (I could not have been friendlier), I can't say it was a good value. They did not even thank me for dining there, which must mean, they really weren't interested in my feeling valued). And, I do not live in Berkeley, nor in a town which is even similarly hipster, intellectual or high income. But with that, I was generous with the tip, because one still has to have manners, even if they did not!
We feel disrespected by the service. The food was average nothing out of the extraordinary. Also the bathroom door was opened by one of the waiters while my 5 yo daughter and I were inside the bathroom. We had locked the bathroom door and told whoever was knocking that we were using the restroom and the waiter opened the door despite of us stating that we were inside. Overall terrible experience.
