Definitely the best restaurant in Boise when it comes to fine dining. From the artistic storytelling woven throughout the experience, the truly bold flavors of unexpectedly combined and locally-sourced ingredients, the European-style seating, to the humorous attitude of the knowledgeable front-of-house… it was a pleasant surprise to come back after so many years and find a restaurant really elevating the food scene in Boise. I’ll definitely be back.
This was an entire experience, a symphony of flavors, smells, art, and stories. We have been twice and every time we go, it is a completely different extraordinary experience. Service is outstanding and staff are very attentive to everything. I was trepidations on the seating arrangement, however, it is like you are sitting at a private table.
In a way want to keep this a secret…. But this place rivals some of the best restaurants I’ve been to, and those include top 100 in the world. Personally I feel the flavors of every single ingredient shines through. The presentation is perfection. The community feel and small seating makes it intimate and unique. Love the play on stories and art. Can’t wait to explore every new menu!
We went here for our anniversary/birthday dinner! This place is UNDERRATED! Truly had the best experience ever! The concept is around an artist, this time it was around Sue! They understand her life is detail and curate dishes around her life story! All the art is the background was made by her - paintings/photography! I wish I had the menu that we took from them to include a detail list of what we ate. We had a drinks pairing along with food. They were SO good! Food (from what I remember) - Egg/salad, soup, tofu, palette cleanser, radish and beetroot cooked, and then dessert! (essentially a 5 course meal)! They were all SO good. Even the entrance was like a speakeasy! We enter into a bar and then into KIN!
Little late sharing, but my son brought me here for mother's day. It was lovely, they had options to accommodate my food allergies. It is a set menu, the food was fresh, inventive and tasty.
Absolutely amazing. Such a creative and unique experience. The vision they have for this place is stunning. Prefix menu curated around a creative idea. Each course served with a tie to the overarching creative idea. Incredible food. Locally sourced ingredients. Menu is updated on the regular. Probably the best dining experience I’ve had in Idaho.
100 stars! Incredible food and experience. We came for the last seating which I guess is a little different. The food was unique and delicious. I wish I could describe it all but they were all related to Aesop's Fables and just kept getting better. Pretty amazing deal for an incredible dinner with wine pairing.
The best dining experience in Boise, if not all of Idaho. James Beard Award winning chef Kris Komori and his team have created a beautiful and intimate space where groups of people from all over gather to get to experience and enjoy their food. The main dining room is small, so reservations are definitely required. You will be served a multitude of dishes of the kitchens choosing showcasing local ingredients and flavors pairings thought of by the same people serving you the food. The current menu is showcasing summer memories of the staff at Kin and you get to know each dish just as you would the person behind it. The flavors were all in harmonious balance while feeding you plenty to be full without feeling bloated. Most of the food is even plated within the same room you are dining in, and you get to each with your eyes just as much as you do with your nose and mouth. The supper club (the later seating) even has beverages included in the price of the meal and all complimented the food very well. Both the main seating and the supper club are definitely worth a visit, and they change the menu every 5 weeks so there is always a reason to keep coming back. We had a fantastic experience and meal and will definitely be coming back.
Having dinner at KIN is not just about dinning, it’s about enjoying and appreciating the perfect integration of art and fine ingredients. When you are waiting for the start time of your dinner, the gallery style of dinning environment prepares you to what you might be even amazed later. Every dish is inspired by the topic, created with elegant preparations and fused into the art. You should visit here at least once in a lifetime.
2023: Excellent dining experience for Boise. This restaurant masterfully presents its food and wine pairings(some other beverages too) with artistic style and flair. Eating here is all about food and flavor. James Beard nominated at this time of this review.... Lovely to share together with someone special, with another couple or a small party of friends.2022: My Valentine took me for KIN's 5 course tasting menu with curated beverage pairings. It is a beautiful experience and get there early & enjoy gathering in a private room before dinner. It is a wonderful experience that brings an awareness of different flavors, textures & pairings. We came away with a few new ideas we want to add to our own repertoire. Absolutely going back because they change the menu every month or two. 2021: The sprouted salad & smoked trout tartare was delicious. We will be going back to try some more of the delicious "food art" that is pleasing to the eye and the tastebuds. The wine's were excellent. There is a small selection, but carefully chosen to offer great quality. Nice trendy place with a good energetic vibe.
Returning to Boise specifically for new experiences with the Kin crew is always a pleasure! It is an educational, delicious, and genuine experience we continuously love. We love the stories, history, and dedication to raising the boom in Food and Beverage.
If you are looking for a great food experience visit Kin. We opted for the 8:45 reservation for a more laid back experience. Every dish was delicious and beautiful presented. Get there early and enjoy a cocktail at the bar.
What hasn't been said about this place already. Top notch food, amazing service, very creative menu and extremely accommodating. Experience is everything with this type of restaurant and they pull no punches. The ONLY "complaint" we had was that the waiting area was a touch drab. Concrete walls, and cheap wood paneling. Not the greatest. However, that's not what we're going there for. And everything else really was excellent. Overall it was a great night, and very worthwhile. We will definitely be back!
Had a wonderful experience last evening with their prix fixe dinner. Food, presentation, staff and cocktails were WONDERFUL! For the two of us having two cocktails each, the dinner and the wine pairing it was $400 (including tip). The best specialty dinner I've had in a long time!!!
Had a fantastic experience. The menu changes every 5 weeks and is always inspired by someone's stories. They tell you the inspiration of each dish. Very unique approach!
My husband and I went to Kin for our 2nd anniversary and we were beyond impressed. The food and drinks were of exceptional quality, and the service was beyond compare! My husband, a mushroom disliker for 24 years, finally found a mushroom dish he couldn’t stop eating. And don’t even get me started on the pavlova we had for dessert – that thing was off the charts delicious. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity during our visit, Kin!
What an experience! Very proud to call chef Kris a local chef. What an amazing team and talent. Congrats on all your success. Highly deserved! Amazing food and experience.
KIN Tasting Menu 1… almost three years to the day from the last tasting menu at State & Lemp. Nostalgic and oh so exciting. Fantastic experience. Missed this food so much. KIN has reinvented itself numerous times since the pandemic hit. They received their occupancy license the day after Boise restaurants were shut down March 2020. Over the past 17 months, they created KIN At Home, piKINic (which became the artistic home of Boise creatives), City of Good meals for kids, Family Meals, Barbecue Kits, and then the bar opened early spring 2021. Now, the KIN crew is back in their element with the return of the Tasting Menu. Through all of these shifts and pivots, they have maintained an artistic and communal integrity that sets them high above the rest. But it comes with setbacks: a hard-to-pin customer experience and a constant shifting workload for the staff. As Delta makes its way through our community, it will be important that we support creators like KIN as they have to pivot again (and again). But one thing is for certain, there is no better restaurant in Idaho. Do yourself a favor and book a Tasting Room dinner for 2 (or 4) ASAP.
Amazing food and service! Highly recommend! Congrats chef Kris! Amazing food and team. You guys all crushed it! Will be back every 5 weeks for new menu.
Kin is such a fun experience. From the gallery to the creative dishes, we enjoyed every bit of our journey here.
Asher, was the best mixologist i've ever experienced. every drink was better than the next, and as a person who normally doesn't frequent cocktail oriented bars, i was thoroughly impressed. he made me want to order more cocktails in my life !
Definitely some of the best/most fun food cooking up in Boise! Plus Kin @ home is pretty sweet, especially if your guests arrive late, because you can pretend like you made everything yourself, which is way impressive. But ultimately you have to come clean that it's not your cooking, since everyone will know the food was far above par of your normal kitchen game. That happened to me. Anyways, I've always loved my experiences with Kin, and you might too!
Had Menu #22 tonight. Out-of-this-world good on the parsnip consommé and the pastry course (persimmon tart with matcha, black sesame and white chocolate) in particular, with typically excellent service and wine pairings alongside. Fantastic food, can't wait to bring my girlfriend around for a future tasting menu when I'm visiting again.
Amazing, amazing dinner - yes, dinners are back at KIN! Lovingly prepared, art-for-the-plate-and-palate kind of fare. Truly special!
Inventive and delicious food and cocktails. Excellent service. Modern space with interesting art. This restaurant is a must try!
Wonderful inventive food. One focus is on fermented foods. Wonderful skewers and cocktails. Wine list and suggestions were excellent
Kin is magical. I love the experience, and the food is mind blowing every time! Boise is so lucky to have such a phenomenal restaurant, with true heart behind it that shows in the care put into every aspect. My favorite save-up-for-a-special-event restaurant 🍽️
Menu 40 was wonderful. Our second time visiting KIN this menu was definitely better then the first one. The green garlic soup tastes so fresh, and the egg yolk was amazing. The pork was amazing, so moist, savory and tender. I'm not a huge asparagus fan, but it served 3? Ways was such a nice pairing. Service was wonderful, had great conversations with a few of the tables next to us.
To preface this: My husband and I travel full time in our RV. We get to see a lot of small towns and home cooking (which i love) but occasionally I want to try a place that really speaks to me and the years of exciting cooking and education I enjoyed in college. I decided to try KIN on a rec from a friend who knows how much I miss an exciting restaurant. I was NOT disappointed by KIN. This was such a fun and memorable spot! The food here is insanely creative and every dish had something unexpected, whether it was a foraged ingredient (which makes my feral heart sing) or a really playful twist on something familiar. We particularly loved the grilled asparagus and Yakisoba, both incredibly flavorful. My inner grandma was ecstatic to see mix-and-match thrifted glasses and plates. It gave everything a personal touch and makes me so happy to see restaurants that embrace re-use. SUCH a cool vibe all around. What I really want to rave about though, is the staff here. I'm huge on customer service, because I've worked in the industry and take pride on being genuine. Again, they did not dissapoint. Their natural ease with each other and clearly strong teamwork made such an inviting space that you really felt all around you. Their energy really buoyed up the entire space, that connection just comes from people who genuinely enjoy working together, and it reminded me of my past job where we all cared for each other like that. Nothing warms my heart like seeing that vibe I miss, family and community, in not just the food, but the staff choices as well. It sets the tone for a relaxed and thoughtful experience. The staff was genuinely excited to reccomend the things they loved and that is something I haven't seen in a long while. I will also have to give the lady who helped us a shout! She had curls that I was incredibly jealous of. I think her name was Connie or Christy, a C name def. She was busting ass in a way that was effortless, managing all my questions and excitement, and I'm 90% sure she was managing the floor! I saw genuine smiles from other customers, and personal connections with the food and staff. But she also managed to make time for what looked like a few regulars that were in while we were there, while still giving us a curated experience. She knew the menu inside and out, made great recs, and made me feel like we would be great friends if we had just met at random! Can’t recommend this spot enough. I had had a year of "great places" that had disappointed me and KIN and its chef and stellar staff finally broke the cycle. This place has that rare combination of heart, style, and flavor that makes you want to come back again and again. I know we will be back next time our travels take us out west!
You can add my 5 star review to the list. We went to KIN for my birthday and I was blown away. This was an entire experience unlike any other. The food was flavorful and balanced savory flavors in ways most businesses do not understand. There was a rich depth of flavor, so the process of eating would reveal hidden flavors. Definitely a masterpiece. Flavors were balanced and complimented each other. I don't think any one flavor overpowered any other. I was humbled by their skill. A must try for any foodie, living in or visiting Boise.
The talented and dedicated staff at KIN deserves to be recognized. It's so nice that a restaurant in Boise is attempting and succeeding at elevating our food scene. The whole experience from top to bottom makes you feel exclusive. You can tell how much care and attention to detail went into every single aspect. It was my girlfriends 21st and thanks to the excellent team she felt nothing short of royalty. The food was expertly prepared and the service is akin to a banquet. Every wine was perfectly paired with each course. It's expensive, however being someone who can't really afford to eat at places like this save once a year, I didn't feel like I overspent a dime for the hospitality, and quality that KIN and it's dedicated staff gave. Thank you for being daring enough to run with your concept, and for really making my girl feel like she was special. 10/10 will be back as many times as I can save up for.
Father in law took us... Wow. We're class traitors for sure now. I loved every dish, the way they built the menu off of an interview with the featured artist and, finally, how creative they were with the vegan (for Ann) and mocktail (for both of us) recipes. Absolutely mind blowing.
Memorable experience for our anniversary. Delicious food, perfect wine pairings and an ambiance that made for a very special evening. Loved every moment and its uniqueness!
KIN is so special. We had a 5 couse meal with, for me, non-alcoholic beverages and the meal and drinks were so unique and meaningful. Keep up the good work Chris and crew. This was a special event and made the meal even more eventful.
I cannot speak highly enough about Kin. It doesn't matter how you experience it, regular tasting menu, the supper club, the art haus bar all of it is incredible. You can tell from the moment a dish is set on your table, they work with an extreme level of passion, love, and artistry. Personally, I prefer the supper club myself. Group seating, mystery menus, included wine pairings makes it a consistently incredible and unique time. Of the times I went in the last year I experienced everything from a tomato soup and scallop dish that was crafted to mimic a Karen Eastman painting they had on the wall at the time, a flank steak cooked for 24hrs at low temp, incredible seafood dishes, you name it. I can say without hesitation, Kin is responsible for the best meals I have ever been served. An absolute gem in the treasure valley, and one I recommend everyone keep in mind for special occasions, date nights, or even group outings. You wont find another experience like it in town.
Came here a few weeks ago and was blown away. Every course was executed with such precision and creativity that it genuinely felt like a full experience, not just a meal. I normally don’t even like seafood, yet the dishes here were so beautifully balanced and thoughtfully prepared that I couldn’t get enough of it. KIN delivers on every level—from presentation, to flavor, to service—and easily stands out as one of the best dining experiences in Boise. I can’t wait to come back.
The staff was very attentive to us and anticipating our preferences. They were very responsive and the food was very unique with complex flavors that you wouldn't get at any other restaurant. Definitely a fun and unique experience.
We went to the bar and ordered drinks and a few appetizers. The basilico drink was delicious, and the snacks we ordered were great too - beef tartar and pickle plate. It was a fun stop for cocktails.
It's $$$$ but never a bad meal here - even at the Arthaus. Arthaus is probably our most visited bar in Boise. I wish we could dine at KIN every week too....
This was an amazing experience! The food was thoughtful and exciting. The atmosphere and staff were both elevated and down to earth. A real high quality food experience without any snobbery. So impressed with the kindness and care! I also had the non-alcoholic drinks with my dinner and they didn’t spare any details in making it special. I can’t wait to go back. Thank you to their whole staff!
We’re passing through Boise and checked out NYTimes 36 hours article which mentioned State and Lemp. At their site describing their history and closing they mentioned Kin so I made a Rez. Was a bit surprised by the family seating but loved it. Found the food delicious and the service great. Wine pairing was interesting - the cab was a bit overwhelming for the pork coppa. Monkfish was quite good but sesame ‘caviar’ was underseasoned. All in all great dining experience. Creative dishes, would be great if one could taste all of the described ingredients and flavors.
What a great dinner! We really enjoyed the way that the food was inspired by the art on display at the restaurant. Each dish was unique and beautiful. We gave 3/5 courses 5 stars (brassica salad, gazpacho, and dumplings), 2/5 courses 2 stars (salmon and pea dessert) for an overall 3.8. Service was impeccable. We appreciated the precis given with each course, it really added to the experience. The seating is pretty much communal, so it's not an intimate experience for 2 but an intimate experience for the 30 diners present. That said, atmosphere was still on point, including music. We will come back again for sure, but we would not do the drink pairing (the tiny sips were not worth it for us). Total bill for 2 with drink pairing and tip was $400.
Service was excellent. Food very average.. didn’t match up with the experience the restaurant was trying to achieve. The best dish was the rhubarb tart with oat milk . (1) Gluten-free bread- was hard (2) Crab & artichoke - Yummy 3) soup - sour & peppery. Average taste but pretty 4) Monk-fish : nice presentation but tasteless.. the sesame caviar wasn’t salty at all thus didn’t help to bring any taste to the monk fish 5) Pork - overcooked thus dry & very salty 6) Rhubarb tart - best Warm towels at the end … nice gesture... note to restaurant .. perhaps use tongs to place the towels on plates instead of hands
They definitely focused on food presentation but not as much on taste, I was very disappointed. Every shared meal I've ever been to people want to talk and conversate, for some reason not here. Not recommmend especially if you are going there for any celebrations. It's more acceptable if you just go on a casual occasion. The price is very expensive however the food is not impressed at that level of expectation. Looks good doesn't equal tastes good. Sadly, it does blind some people , and they think it is great. I think Kin is focusing too much on the looking/what the food represents rather than than how the food really tases itself. There were no memorable points on the food. The cocktails were great. Similar concepts are out there and so much more impressive.
Mediocre at best. Food was not at the level of the hype ( I have eaten at several michelin star rated restaurants and comparable high end places with pre-fixe menus both us based and internationally). Wine pairing was abysmal from screw top bottles. Not worth the price. The ingredient pairings were something I would expect from an inexperienced chef experimenting on a weekend at home. Over salted risotto dish was gross and couldn’t finish the dessert. You are better off going to Chandler’s or Barbacoa for the price as you get better food for 2 people for the cost of 1 person here.
Interesting restaurant. This venue is group seating with weird group presentations about the food, but a massive disconnect from the reality of the food. It sounded like they are in the middle of significant turnover and it was unclear why they kept talking about it. I appreciate any food venue that is trying to be good or great. This location offers 5 tiny dishes as a package that varried from excellent to exceptionally average. The drink and wine parings were terrible and represented a total failure and misunderstanding of both food and wine. The size of the servings was insanely small and definitely overall was quite overpriced. Worth the stop if you just want a random experiment, but they are not ready for the price they are charging.
First off, if you’re a first-time visitor and you checked out the website, it’s quite confusing. We had intended to dine on the restaurant located a few floors above, but unfortunately, we ended up at the bottom level instead. The food was not particularly impressive. We ordered the skewers, which were supposed to come with two, but they were incredibly small and barely edible. To make matters worse, our steak was raw, and the fries were overcooked. What was even more disappointing was the additional fee on our bill. It wasn’t a service fee; it was a fee to cover the insurance for the restaurant’s employees. In small print, it stated that we could request to remove this fee, but it was still quite disappointing. Despite the negative experiences, we did enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant. However, we wouldn’t be inclined to return in the future.
Update: The restaraunt decided to respond 10 MONTHS after this review, failed to respond to my email, and effectively turned the response into an advertisement. Not inspiring. We visited KIN for the supper club on Saturday night for my husband's 40th birthday. We were really excited to eat at this restaurant and prioritized this a month out. We've eaten at many James Beard and Michelin star restaurants in the US and internationally, and I have to say that we unfortunately walked away from this feeling like this was the worst experience that we have ever had. We felt that we didn't get our money's worth in terms of quality or quantity and the ambience and experience left much to be desired. Specifically, these are some of the things that stood out as making this a suboptimal experience: 1) You all called and emailed us multiple times and wanted details about my husband's 40th (his name, etc.). Then, KIN did absolutely nothing to make it special - a candle, a note, etc. I would have been fine if there was no mention of it being a special event, but you all asked multiple questions in advance, and then it was never mentioned as a part of the experience. 2) The food was bland, the portions were incredibly small for the $ amount, and the price point seemed very high given that there were no ingredients that were out of the ordinary or preparation styles that seemed unique. Frankly, we felt that we have made better food at home as home chefs. I have no problem with the price point...we've spent $600-700 for dinner for 2 people before and left happy with the money that we spent. Not the case this time. 3) We were seated really close to everyone (shoulder to shoulder). No offense, when you go out for a really nice dinner like that, there should be an assumption that people may not want to be communal. They may want to just enjoy dinner with the people that they booked a reservation with. We were seated in the middle, and the people on either side would not stop talking to us the entire time, and there was no easy way out of that situation. 4) The wine was also unremarkable. The cocktails before hand were phenomenal. We were actually initially very excited if that was to be an indication of the evening, but that quality did not hold. Anyways, I hate to share this feedback, but it really was one of our worst dining experiences.
EDIT: You're going to pay $500+ to walk out hungry. Luckily their is a Jimmy Johns down the street. Oh, and by the way, if you have an alergy, they will charge. This place will not last. Nice response. The grammar matched the flavor we experienced. I absolutely have been there, it was for my birthday. You may recall charging my girlfriend 18$ for being allergic to mushrooms. We were there for your (back to school/college theme) joke of a dinner. What's funny is a community was built, everyone we sat with all went to pie hole together on 8th after.
Last night, my partner and I were utterly disappointed by our experience at Kin. We had made a reservation weeks in advance to celebrate our wedding night, only to be met with a shocking lack of consideration. Upon arriving, we realized the restaurant had overbooked and could only offer us two seats at a large, shared table with strangers. This was a complete letdown, considering the special occasion and the fact that we had made our reservation well in advance. The staff's response was equally disheartening. When we expressed our disappointment and explained that we were celebrating our wedding, the waiter's dismissive attitude was evident. He seemed more concerned with avoiding responsibility than ensuring our satisfaction. It was clear that once we had prepaid, the restaurant had no incentive to provide good service. We left Kin feeling frustrated and disappointed. Our special night was ruined by a complete lack of respect and professionalism from the staff. I would strongly advise anyone considering dining here to think twice.
