A classic South End café that I like dropping by for chili. First learned about this place while waiting in line at Brick Street Bagels last year. Since they open early, I had some time to poke around the menu, and the chili immediately caught my eye. Chili felt almost too basic to order out. I’d never actually bought chili from a restaurant before, but it also isn’t something I usually make space for alongside a breakfast burrito or a well-made sandwich. It’s probably more of a natural companion to a simple sourdough loaf, so even a straightforward meatloaf sandwich felt like a huge upgrade. They offer both vegetarian and turkey chili, and both were well done. The vegetarian version didn’t feel lacking in umami at all. On its own, the turkey chili was slightly better, but paired with sandwiches, the vegetarian chili actually worked better. It managed to retain umami without the weight, which made it the perfect dipping sauce for their pressed meatloaf sandwich. The café is tucked into a residential neighborhood, so parking can be a bit tricky, even for quick pickups. Would still come back for that chili and sandwich combo though.
We enjoyed brunch and had a reservation, so we were seated promptly downstairs. There is a downstairs and upstairs level. They have a lovely selection of baked goods, a full bar and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoyed the huevos rancheros and the eggs/salmon plate, with an appetizer fresh fruit plate. We really enjoyed our meals, which were served hot and delicious. Service was attentive and prompt. Prices are slightly elevated due to the quality and the location. We had a great experience and look forward to going back again.
such good food and atmosphere. the brussel sprouts and truffle fries were amazing. ask for all the sauces with it they were so good. they had such fun drinks and the espresso martini was one of the best in Boston
There are places you visit by chance, and others you feel you were meant to find. South End Buttery belongs to the latter. From the moment I walked in, I knew this wasn’t just a place to have breakfast. I ordered the eggs Benedict, which were perfectly made, and a cup of coffee with a balanced, comforting flavor… but more than the taste, it felt affectionate. Why “affectionate”? Because that’s exactly how I felt from the very beginning: welcomed, cared for, at home. Three people truly shaped my experience: Valentina, who kindly welcomed and guided me to my seat; Vanessa, my lovely and attentive server; and the manager, whom I briefly met but immediately recognized as the heart behind the outstanding team. It’s not about who was kinder—it’s clear that someone here knows how to choose exceptional people. The place itself is beautiful—classic, well-kept, with a radiant energy. I didn’t just feed my body; I fed my soul. I left feeling grateful, uplifted, and inspired. I’m happy to be in Boston, but this place… I will return. Rarely have I left a spot with such a strong desire to come back.
Went with a friend for breakfast on Sunday, they asked if I had a reservation, but luckily we went early enough to be seated. We got the union square breakfast and the torta rancheros & both were very clean, simple, fresh. What really stood out was the atmosphere and the interior, the ambience was definitely giving traditional Boston. Can’t believe I stumbled on this gem.
I highly recommend South End Buttery in Boston. I love the food, the atmosphere, the people there. Went there yesterday, found every dish was so special, creative, full of flavours. The terrace in the sunshine has a very European feel, and also enjoyed the bar afterwards. Such a welcoming place, can’t wait to go again.
Go to the south end and go grab some bakery bread. There is nice spot for breakfast, Brunch and Dinner. The home made bread fresh everyday. I got a smoke salmon Bagel. This is the best I never have.
Fantastic sandwich with amazing coffee. Had a nice place to sit and had a great time.
Went for dinner and was not disappointed! Food was amazing. We got the Mezze (with all three spreads - the whipped red pepper feta was my favorite), Crispy Calamari & Mussels as well as the Fish&Chips (with truffle fries) to share. We also all got some drinks from the bar which were also tasty. For dessert we did the Affogato with pistachio icecream and that was incredible! The ice-cream itself was super creamy and the cookies it came with were a great bite. Service was fantastic - a little slow but we didn’t mind as we were in no rush. 10/10!
I mistakenly posted my first review using the wrong Google account. I wanted to express how fantastic this place is! My boyfriend and I visited for pancakes and a breakfast sandwich. The pancakes were perfect; I ordered chocolate chip pancakes that came with two perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs, and toast which were delicious. The home fries aka breakfast potatoes are PERFECT!! Thank you for the fantastic service and excellent food. I will be recommending this place to my friends, and will definitely be coming again!
The South End Buttery is a bit of a South End institution- it’s the spot everyone tells you to visit there! We went for a Sunday brunch and sat on the patio. It was extremely busy so you do need to reserve. The staff were friendly and brunch was good. My husband got the Buttery Breakfast and the pancakes were so fluffy - really nice. Not cheap but a nice spot for a nice brunch.
Tucked in South End, this little establishment surprised me when by accident I found it driving these streets. Very warm and cozy place, perfect for a morning date on one of the tables outside. The pumpkin spiced latte was subtle on the spice, which I like and the Chicken Milanese sandwich was delicious! The price was a bit on the expensive side but worth it. I’m very happy to have found this place.
Really good place to go! Easy to go, nearby t station! The place has wifi and restroom inside. They serve breakfast/brunch and dinner! We went there to try the dinner! We reserved a spot around 7:30 and the restaurant closes at 8:00 but we could order and eat calmly inside! The attendant was really kind but she tried to take out our plates without we finish it (not once but twice). The food is really good, that taste is amazing and it's a fair place!
I cannot rave enough about this place! The sit-down area is so lovely for a Sunday brunch. You can't go wrong with any of their entrees and their breakfast cocktails are the perfect pairing. However, if you stay in the front and take out a sandwich with coffee to go, those biscuits are just to die for! The caprese sandwich was life changing 😍
Food was very good, fresh. The staff are professional and courteous which is appreciated especially during the Brunch rush when every white girl is annoying the staff asking “how much longer for a table?” Every five minutes. The host was attentive and informative, and our waitress was very patient with us. Everything on the menu looked so good so it took us a minute to order. Ambience is calm and relaxed. The restaurant part is small, but it keeps the noise level down. Will definitely be back.
Brunch was excellent here! The basement dining area was comfortable and intimate, but I would highly recommend getting a reservation since the space is smaller than most. We started off with mimosas (chose from Orange, Blood orange, or Grapefruit) and then had their Buttery Bakery Basket (blueberry scones are a must-have)! - The Breakfast Sandwich: arugula lightens each bite of fried egg all in the brioche bun and the home fries are crisp, halved fingerling potatoes 👌🏿 - Western Omelet: greens made this omelet fresh!
Delicious coffee. I love to brunch here because they have an actual coffee shop too so you can get real espresso and lattes. The eggs Benedict are delicious and it’s located in a very cute part of south end. Highly recommend a stop here. Only thing to caution you about: the biscuits are pretty unique and definitely not my favorite. They tasted a little stale and were difficult to cut through or chew. Everything else I loved.
Fantastic waitstaff at this restaurant. Very attentive. Great brunch food. I had the French toast. Great place for large parties too. I went here with my new girlfriends. We will return!
It was a rainy day, but the staff were very welcoming. Enjoyed several pastries. Great eats on a less than stellar weather day. My son loved it.
Great breakfast. Super popular, so it must be good. The home fries were really nice.
I love this place! They have a good selection of baked goods and also serve warm plates as well. Staff here are very friendly and willing to help customers on the menu. Love this neighbourhood. It’s very beautiful especially during the fall.
I attended a holiday party at the South End Buttery last night and it was nothing short of exceptional! The venue is quaint and cozy, the food was top notch and the service was even better. Would absolutely recommend this little spot going strong in the South End of Boston!
Live music nearly every night! The vibe is eclectic in a large room, and the drinks are great. Plenty of room at the bar to have a conversation. Their cocktail menu has mostly clear liquor with a sweet side.
The food was absolutely amazing and our table in the lower level of the restaurant were quaint and comfortable. Everything we ordered was delicious, which included the mussels as an appetizer, the eggplant parmesan, steak frites, meatloaf, and a blueberry tart. Personally my steak frites was a great portion size, the steak was super flavorful, and the garlic fries were surprisingly great! We stumbled upon this place while waiting to be seated at another restaurant down the road, and after looking at the menu and being told we could be seated immediately, we quickly decided to eat here. Glad we did!
Delicious everything! A little chilly to linger on a cold morning, but blame that on the bustle and the good reputation. In winter, I will consider this a weekday leisure spot! 🌺
I'm sitting here now. Come when you can. The outdoor seating is perfect today. This Is my first time... Now one of my favorite places. I laugh at people taking pictures of food. I just took a picture of my caprese biscuit sandwich. I'm going to post it. The menu is breakfast and lunch.i almost couldn't decide, so much to choose from that is not the ordinary. I recommend this place all day. It's the kind of place you look for, hoping to find, walking around Boston God Bless
The South End Buttery is a great spot for breakfast. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, perfect for starting the day. The Eggs Benedict were absolutely delicious—perfectly cooked and full of flavor. A solid choice if you’re in the South End and looking for a satisfying breakfast.
We order from Butery frequently and have never been disappointed. The Caprese Biscuit Breakfast sandwich, Ricotta Toast, and Salmon Everything Bagel are amazing! And just as important the service is exceptional. I was having trouble with an online order for delivery and called the store. The owner Richard helped me and then went the extra step to text me back to say the order went through perfectly! It’s rare to have an owner provide his/her cell phone and to be so invested in ensuring the customer experience is perfect! Quite impressed! Thank you Richard and South End Buttery! We will be back!!
A beautiful street bistro in the heart of the South End. The cafe is so picturesque and the food is excellent. Our waiter was very helpful and more about him later. Only reason for 4⭐️on service was due to the hostess, not our waiter, Ivan. We tried to understand what the seating policy was but couldn’t get a solid answer from the hostess. We asked how long would it take to be seated and she said an hour and if we could be added to the list. She said there is no wait list?!? So should we try to reserve online? She said they’re full but we saw some spots open for inside. There were 3 of us who attempted individually to get a coherent answer but failed. So we just waited outside and Ivan, our waiter asked how many and if we could sit outside, which we did.
We had a great brunch on Sunday at south end buttery. I got the huevos rancheros and my husband got the burger. I got an iced matcha latte which was great! For entrees I was between the eggs Benedict and the huevos rancheros. The server recommended both. Food was good but not phenomenal. It was yummy but not very noteworthy or really memorable. I’m not sure why. I don’t have specific feedback but it just wasn’t mind blowing for a 5 star review.
Nice cafe in the South End, a bit expensive but the scones are really nice and a good stop if you’re in the area. The butterscotch scone was full of chips and flavor, fluffy on the inside, and a good size. Coffee was okay, I prefer the dark roast more than the light. Cafe part gets extremely crowded so be prepared to take it to go or sit outside. A good stop for a quick bite! Overall not my favorite place in the area but solid!
Had a great experience at Southend Buttery! The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the food was fresh and delicious. The coffee was excellent too. The atmosphere is cozy and perfect for catching up with friends or getting some work done. Definitely coming back!
Excellent brunch in the South End! The smoked salmon in the smoked salmon and eggs was amazing. The eggs were pretty good too, but the salmon was really the star. The waiter recommended the guava mimosa which was delicious! Seating is a little crowded but not too squished.
The place is very nice, they have a variety of pastries and bagels. We ordered the breakfast burrito and the smoked salmon bagel but neither liked them too much. I’d recommend getting a bagel with cream cheese (at least I think that’s what it is). While we sat down for 30 mins, I promise you, more than 10 people ordered that.
Had a lovely dinner outside! All the food was great, but those fries were the real stand out. All around a nice meal. I’ve also had brunch here and would recommend.
Great atmosphere. Cute place on a corner with a good variety of breakfast options. We had 2 types of Eggs Benedict and stake and eggs. All plates were delicious. Had a bottle of Brutt for mimosas but the orange juice comes in small containers need to upgrade.
I opted for the champagne and caviar experience. I enjoyed the selections, and I hope they continue the experience. Our server was not as friendly as I had hoped, and didn’t really give us info on what we were having, and we didn’t have the menu to refer to.
Great place for brunch! Wasn't that busy when we went but space for seating could be an issue during busier hours. We made reservations the day before and sat at a large table near the bar. The staff was courteous and extremely accommodating when we had a party that was a bit larger than expected. Our server was also very responsive. I ordered the Steak and Eggs. Overall, the dish was pretty good. My only gripe would be the steak. While done medium rare (how I like it), too much of the surface of the steak was burned so it was really bitter.
Extremely small dinning space. But if u manage to get a seat its a great place for a meal. We enjoyed Brunch here. We have zero complaints and a few fond memories. Quality food and service. Enjoy!
Fantastic Sunday brunch spot. Be sure to make reservations in advance and leave time for parking. We had the buttery basket as a starter which was a mixture of tasty muffins, scones and other tasty types of bread. We had the huevos rancheros and veggie eggs benedict and both were solid options. The home fries were exceptionally well done. The service was courteous and fast, we really enjoyed the meal.
Tucked in off a main artery, South End Buttery is nestled halfway up on the corner of Clarendon & Gray. Offering fuller meal options than other nearby cafes, what they lack in quantity, they make up in quality. Quiches, cold salads, meatloaf, & fish dishes are a few of filling eats to choose from. I went in to satisfy my sweet tooth. Although baked off the premises, I was told by the friendly staff that cupcakes, and cookies are delivered fresh daily...and I was not disappointed. For a midweek afternoon, close to the end of the workday, the place was practically empty. However, I think it was due to the prevalence of an abundance of cafe and bar type places rather than the store itself. All the better, to have a great place to go to and avoid a crowd.
Bought all variety of cup cakes. I wasn’t impressed with the taste and softness. Definitely had better. Would have gone to another place if they were open on Thanksgiving.
Charming fireplace seating - but jammed at a small table so close to others we felt like we were in everyone’s conversations and had no space on our table for food. Good bistro-style food. Appetizers got the mussels and arancini and they were the best things. Entrees got steak frites and roasted chicken and both were cooked well but severely under seasoned, especially the steak. Food is too basic for that price point - $200+ dinner for two and only one of us was drinking.
I genuinely enjoyed the food at South End Buttery. The flavors are well done, and the service was friendly and professional throughout our visit. You can tell there’s care put into both the menu and the staff experience. That said, a few issues took away from the overall experience. The biggest one is the layout. The space feels overfilled with tables, to the point where it becomes uncomfortable. Seating is extremely tight, and it often felt like we were dining with the people at the next table rather than alongside them. A little more breathing room would go a long way toward improving the atmosphere. Pricing is another mixed area. The menu prices themselves feel reasonable for the quality, but the added 4% administrative fee was disappointing. Framing this charge as support for kitchen staff places the responsibility of employee compensation onto the customer, which doesn’t sit well. As a patron, I expect to pay for what I order, not to subsidize internal wage structures through mandatory fees. Fair pay for employees should be built into the business model, not added as an extra line item. Overall, the food and service are strong, but the cramped space and the administrative surcharge make the experience less enjoyable than it could be. With some adjustments, this could be a much more comfortable and transparent place to dine.
I’ve been coming here for about 3 years and can confidently say that it’s gone downhill. Food has always been good but the service is lacking. I was there this past Saturday for breakfast and my order arrived incorrect. I sat at the table right by the bar and even with 5+ employees close by, it was still hard to get their attention. I ordered the torta with sausage and it didn’t originally come with it. When I finally talked to our server, he was able to bring out a side of sausage fairly quickly. I’d noticed a small hair on the plate and it took a while for us to be checked on so I could get a replacement. When I talked to the server to let him know, he was pretty dismissive and I decided that I didn’t need the side of sausage since I could tell they were just going to change the plate then provide me with a new order. The servers and hostesses by the door were very chatty with each other and I saw a lot of PDA. It reminded me of high school. The South End Buttery was one of my favorite breakfast/brunch places in Boston but I unfortunately will not be returning.
I recently had breakfast at the South End Buttery in Boston, and I'd like to share my thoughts for those considering a visit. First and foremost, the venue itself is quite charming, situated in a lovely neighborhood that adds to its appeal. Upon our early morning arrival, we were greeted by a completely empty restaurant. Despite this, and not having a reservation, our request to be seated along the edge of the room was unfortunately not accommodated, and we found ourselves placed right in the center of the empty space downstairs. As for the food, I opted for the mushroom omelette. The dish was presented neatly, and while the ingredients were fresh, I found the overall size quite small for the price point. The flavors, though unique, didn't quite harmonize as well as I had hoped, leading to an overall okay but not memorable culinary experience. Also the cheese in my omelette wasn’t melted. On the note of value, I felt the pricing was a bit steep relative to the portion sizes and the culinary experience provided. To sum up, while the South End Buttery has its charms and the setting is undeniably pleasant, my visit left me feeling that there's room for improvement in terms of seating flexibility, portion sizes, and flavor combinations. It's a decent spot for those in the area who are looking for a quick bite in a nice environment, but manage your expectations regarding the culinary experience and pricing.
Overrated! 4.75 for an anemic toasted bagel + 1.95 for cream cheese is criminal. It took 10 minutes to make it. I get that it's in South End but these prices are unjustified! Also, $25 for a basic burger? Bye!
My waiter was awesome and it was in a really cute area. My food was so plain though and my drink tasted like vanilla protein powder mixed with water. I got the seafood scampi and the sauce was so bland I make it better at home. And all the seafood was chewy. And I got the strawberry matcha martini. Nasty
Ordered a latte, it came spilled all over the cup, asked for it to be changed, and it came spilled again... Tasted it, it tasted of old grinds as if the espresso machine was not cleaned. The milk was not steamed properly either. The ricotta fritters with nutella were good (but isn’t anything, when it’s coated in nutella). Would not reccomended the french toast, it was really off. Might be because it’s a sunday. Had coffee here on Friday and it was much better.
This comment is specific to the tea service. Tea, as I think is commonly understood, requires seeping prior to adding milk. Adding milk lowers the temperature and prevents proper seeping, resulting in milky hot water rather than tea. Would be great to see this done properly in the future for tea that costs more than six dollars a cup.
