My favorite bar hands down. Knowlegable and extremely friendly staff. No pretension here, my friends, because they are passionate about turning you on to the beer or food that is going to make your day. The best grilled cheese in the world......especially the fig & arugula. Covenhoven just has such a feel-good atmosphere to it.
Good bar with eclectic beers. Nice outdoor garden area too. Def has a new parents moved to Brooklyn for the baby and this is our spot to meet our still single friends vibe.
Didn't try the food, but the beer selection was excellent. There was only one beer I recognized on the tap list. Staff and other patrons were very friendly and knowledgeable. The garden in the back was beautiful. Heard this is the only place you can go in this area for the best craft taps.
This is THE spot to enjoy craft beer in the Crown Heights area. It’s a haven of rotating taps from locally sourced breweries and plenty of domestic and imported cans and bottles to go on the fridge. The bar staff is helpful and knowledgeable, and lets you try anything before ordering. Best kept secrets: the board games stashed by the bathroom and the roasted red pepper goat cheese grilled cheese sandwich.
Love this place! If you love craft beer or just alcohol in general, there’s no better place around the area. Great service and vibes.
This is one of the most truly “chill” places around. Same few bartenders there every time I go, who are super cool guys, and little game corner in the back. Somehow they manage to make it simultaneously laid back and very high-quality in there. Endless interesting canned beers and ciders to pick from, a veritable list of rotating drafts, and little cheese and self-serve bread to munch with them. The cherries on top are an exquisite outdoor garden area in the back and the limited but incredible list of bites: the best grilled cheese I’ve had in my life, for example.
Ideal craft beer bar environment. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, can talk about beer all night! Great patio, quiet low key ambiance. Board games available to use. Bottle shop in addition to drafts available.
Hip place to go with friends while also chill enough to go solo to read a book and enjoy a good beer. They offer plenty of indoor seating and several cute tables outside in the back patio. Small menu offering yummy bites and in addition to their epic beer selection, they have Gf beer and non-alcoholic drinks to choose from. Can’t go wrong!
Best craft beer option in Crown Heights. Super friendly staff and wide selection of brews. Two prices on each can in the cooler- one for if you drink house, another if you leave with it. Very transparent. Bread and cheese for purchase in the back.
Best Craft Beer bar in NYC. When it comes down to it, Covenhoven is my absolute favorite. I come here from Astoria because they have everything I look for in a great beer bar... Awesome draught list! Amazing selection of local, regional and far away beers to stay or go! Beautiful backyard! Dogs allowed in front patio area! Some board games! Good music! And most importantly...a top notch staff! They don’t have liquor...this is a beer bar. But if beer is your thing...you won’t be disappointed. Oh, and their grilled cheeses...👌🏾
Favorite bar in Crown Heights. Tons of choices in cans & bottles in their freezers and they always have fresh, new, delicious craft beers on tap. Bartenders know their stuff and are happy to guide you to a beer you'll like. Quality meat & cheese selection. And if you don't wanna DIY, the grilled cheeses are sure bet. They have a backyard, spacious indoor seating with good lighting, and I frequently see people out front with their dogs--what more do you want to entice you to stop in and see for yourself?
Great beer selection in a very nicely designed space. Good spot for a date. Board games you can play while you drink your fancy beer. Didn't eat but the grill smelled amazing.
Massive....extensive beer options. Ever revolving, seasonal beers and cider on tap, and the wall opposite the register is covered in refrigerators filled with seemingly countless bottles and cans of all sorts of new-to-me brands of beer. As a beer neophyte, I rely on the expertise of the staff to steer me in the right direction. I described what I was in the mood for and they picked exactly what I was looking for on their first recommended pick (they graciously supply sample-pours). Cute bar-like menu, and inexpensive chips and snacks for sale as well. I also noticed that one of the fridges had charcuterie and fromage for sale. Overall very chill spot, cool staff, and a charming backyard garden seating area. Would come back for sure.
Great beer, surprisingly good food (fig + arugula grilled cheese was 🤌🤌) and, most importantly, kid/toddler friendly if you sit in the backyard.
I’ve been there a few times and it has always been a nice atmosphere. Never too empty or too crowded. The staff was helpful and the drink selection (especially beer) is very good and the prices are in line with other similar bars. I’ve been told by the people I’ve gone there with that the grilled cheese is phenomenal. Plus, I left my headphones there and they found them and held them for me to pick up.
Great selection of beer and also bartenders who make great recommendations! The outdoor garden area is small but really cute and a good place to spend a few hours hanging out with friends. Love coming here
Excellent beer bar with a cozy backyard that makes any warm evening better. They have 15+ taps at any one time and those rotate through very regularly for more variety. Also have a fridge that has way too many beers to count in cans and bottles in addition to some fun board games. 5/5
Low key bar with great beer selection, including some from local microbreweries like Threes. Bartenders are friendly and willing to impart they're knowledge and let you try samples. Great garden out back for the summer and a little patio out front too.
Great beer selection here, both for to-go cans or on tap. Backyard, porch, and railroad interior make this bar a comfortable, but busy neighborhood spot. Food is also available, try the beet/arugula salad, grilled cheese, or brats on pretzel bun!
Love this place! Covenhoven has an ever rotating tap selection that is a delight to the most ardent beer nerd. Local beers, hard to get beers and ones that are completely different can be found along with an amazing bottle selection. The back yard is lovely in warm weather and we love sitting out front with our dog when weather permits. A true neighborhood gem!
Amazing selection of bottles and draft craft beers. As a west coaster they have almanac sour beers! As well as amazing local New York/east coast beers. Oh, and a grilled cheese station to feed your hungry bellies. Amazing staff and knowledgeable. Go, go, go!
Come here if you are looking for a legitimate beer establishment. The number of beer options may be overwhelming for most but the staff is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, friendly and down to earth. Great beer, the hot pretzels are delicious AND board games. What more do you need?
Friendly staff, happy to give you samples of the various beers on tap so you can find exactly what you're looking for. A nice outdoor patio in the back seats probably 20-30 people. Beers & ciders are sold in two different sizes; usually the bigger size is 25% or so bigger for only a dollar or two extra.
I had a pretty fun time here, mellow vibe. I loved my grilled cheese (made with love), plus this stout that tastes like a mix of cold brew and an espresso martini. The outdoor area is my favorite part of my experience!
Excellent beer selection! And very friendly bartenders, who let you taste before getting a pint. And the food is really tasty - I've tried a couple grilled cheese-style toast sandwiches. The only negatives I can think of.. sometimes gets kinda loud, and the taps can be IPA heavy (but that's not really a negative)
Hell yeah! I love this place! Great beer bar with excellent food and service. As a parent (and this is relatively family friendly in the early hours), the access is difficult - I feel like people with disabilities would also be challenged. They could be more proactive in helping on this end. Only reason for the knock on atmosphere.
Best beer bar in the city. They pay attention to details like... clean glasses, proper serving pressure/temperature, great selection. They have coolers full of curated regional and international beers so you can always find something interesting to try. The staff is knowledgeable. Breweries make this place their first stop in the city to do tap takeovers. They don't do a lot of food but what they have they do well. Makes it hard to go to other bars knowing I'll always have a great experience here.
Always a nice experience. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
We sat in the garden on an fine September evening, it was very atmospheric and enabled us to be socially distanced. We had a pleasant time and were able to chat. They have an extensive beer selection and gave recommendation and tasters which I like. Service was fine but the place was not too busy so I can't comment about when it is. Beers were not cheap but then nothing in this neighbourhood is, and the pound had been trashed the week we were there.
Went to a friends bday party — a narrow front space gives way to a long narrow backyard w steps and tables that was lovely to hang in. Had a grilled cheese with havarti and fig jam that tasted awesome; they have a lot of various graphic designy artisinal looking beer cans in a big fridge to choose from in addition to beer and wine on tap and I had one milk stout that ruled and one other beer that wasn’t my thing but it gives a fun candy store vibe . Vibe is casual and talky and pleasant they also have cheese bits in a fridge and baguettes for sale which is smart of them
My number 1 regular spot in the neighborhood for casual hangs and dates! So many great beers, immaculate vibes, the back yard is the absolute best, they have board games and trivia nights, I even find this place to be a great solo spot to come with my laptop during certain hours. Plus you can grab-and-go from the massive beer fridge! It's honestly one of my favorite spots - I've been coming here for years!
Love it! Great range of beer and cider as well as non alcoholic beers! Pretzels are so good and the grilled cheese is huge! Bartender was super nice and helpful! Beautiful outdoor area as well as indoors! Cant wait to go back!
I cannot say enough about how much I love this bar. The atmosphere (especially the backyard when it's nice out) is 10/10. The drink selection is so varied and changes all the time, and when you're getting deep in your cups their grilled cheese hits different. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.
Great local spot to work from and stay afterwards for an-after work beer. They've got a great selection of beers and ciders, and their grilled cheese is AMAZING. Staff is super friendly and knowledgable. Fantastic local gem to go with friends any day of the week.
Such a cozy welcoming down to earth spot with an amazing beer selection, and crazy good simple eats! Sit at the bar to chat with the bartenders, or grab a table close to the entrance garage door that’s fully open during the summer. This is going to be a new regular spot for me, where I bet you’ll get to meet the other regulars.
One of the best beer bars in Brooklyn. It's cozy inside, but they have a nice backyard with a patio, planters and grass with tables. There is a small front porch with a couple of benches as well and people bring their dogs and have a beer out front. Besides the excellent rotating 16 taps, featuring the best local and U.S. breweries, they have an extensive slection of bottles and cans to stay or to go. All the beer is stored cold and flies out of the coolers so you can be sure it's fresh. The selection is well curated. On top of that the staff and customers are friendly and cool. It's a nice neighborhood spot even if you were not that into beer! You can always get cider here, I know they have some wine but it focuses on beer. The grilled cheese sandwiches are pretty good too. Your guests will be impressed if you bring them here it is a five star beer place and a five star neighborhood bar.
Covenhoven in Brooklyn is a sanctuary for those who appreciate craft beer. This unassuming gem offers a rotating selection of rare and local brews that would make any beer aficionado’s heart race. The cozy, lived-in ambiance, complemented by a delightful backyard, invites you to lose track of time and savor the moment. Covenhoven isn’t just a bar; it’s a pilgrimage for the discerning palate, a place where beer is celebrated as the art form it truly is.
Speaking as a visiting Midwesterner (and beer geek), THIS is the place to go for the local brews. Cozy atmosphere, great variety, and staff who know their beer. Will def be back whenever I’m in town!
One of the best neighborhood bars for a relaxing weekend hang. The tap selection is usually great, and they offer pretty good bar food and make-your-own cheese/charcuterie plates for snacks. It can get a little wild with kid birthday parties and kids are running around the bar. One recent weekend, a family had essentially blocked off all indoor seating to stage goodie bags, cake and coat storage and it was raining, so there was no where to sit for others.
Food was great and abundant, beers a little weird but varied, and just a chill atmosphere.
Food is simple and quick, but perfect bar food. Good beer selection, variety and quality. Cozy inside, cute little back yard. And you can build your own charcuterie board out of their big selection of meats and cheese, etc.
Great beer selection. Excellent service. Board games and cozy atmosphere.
Just happened to wander in here after visiting the botanic gardens and am really glad I did. Chill atmosphere in the afternoon and good selection of beer. Grilled cheeses are DELICIOUS and huge! Definitely worth more than the $8 I paid. If I thought I could have finished another one, I’d have ordered a second.
Lovely backyard space with fun rotating beer taps, a must visit for those who love beer.
Came here on a lovely Saturday afternoon so it wasn’t as packed. The beer & cider selections are impeccable, both on tap and in cans. I had the St. Ambrose with a hint of mango and jalapeño. I also had the peach beer. Yum! Get the grilled cheese especially the fig & arugula. Will definitely come back.
Great cozy spot for a small group of friends or date night. The grilled cheese and pretzels smelled delicious
The value here makes you question why others charge more. Their staff demonstrated both genuine interest and friendly manners. It was a wonderful experience. Their dishes hit the spot perfectly. The location was distinctive, the cuisine was good and I had an enjoyable experience.
Great self-serve/order-at-the-bar type spot. Lovely back garden. It’s always empty so I like to bring colleagues and friends here for working happy hours or no fuss hangs
An excellent spot to sit back and relax after a long day or to catch up with friends. The smell of cheese lingers in the air as you have a pint of beer or browse the fridges for something to go. Much respect for having reasonable prices if you decide to uncork something on premise. The cheese sandwiches are on point.
My favorite spot of all! Good selection of beer beautiful outside backyard for the summer time. Always on point with the decor. And delicious food. My favorite part is the cold cuts that you can grab out of the fridge which go amazing with a cold beer!
gorgeous patio with fireflies and little lanterns. Inside a great selection of cans to take home, baguettes freshly baked that day with warm butter, amazing. I saw folks enjoying pretzels with mustard and playing jenga. I had a delightful strawberry rhubarb tart which was a seasonal beer on tap.
DIY shark choochie board! Their selection is tasty & affordable. They def need to get new knifes because cutting the salami is a job. Their selection is great if you’re into beer / craft beer. If you’re not into beer…they have wine & ciders that are pretty good. It gets super busy and warm in there. The staff isn’t super attentive but when I could get someone’s attention, they were helpful.
Great selection of beer, amazing grilled cheese. The place is cozy and has a nice back yard
Super cozy, unpretentious spot. Reminds me of pubs in England where people just get together to chill, maybe have a pint. They only serve beer and wine which is great for the atmosphere. Lots of board games, had fun playing and taking it easy.
Nice cozy spot located in Brooklyn, I like the feel when you walk in and they actually sell beers to go from the fridge that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to buy. I came in on a rainy Sunday and was able to grab and go within mins. Friendly staff and good beer selection if I’m by next time I’ll stop in for better pictures of the inside refrigerators full of beers and ciders
Food is excellent. Drink selection is extensive. Place could really use some noise dampening. It’s quite loud for such a small room. Also note that the prices listed online are not what is charged in person
Good beer selection with a nice and friendly staff. Great atmosphere for meeting people and a nice backyard. The place is often full which makes service slow (though the noise level is never inordinate, which is nice), so don't go if you're looking for a good place for a large group. Also, no real vegan options on the menu, which is sad. The fresh baked half baguettes are nice, though, and worth getting.
This is a great addition to the neighborhood. The tap list is broad and varies daily, and the refrigerated beer selection is on point. The atmosphere of the place doesn't seem to have really gelled yet, but this is a good location to enjoy a relatively quiet, tasty beer with a friend. Some of the draft beers are probably a buck overpriced, which leads me to often turn to a bottle from the fridge. Of course, there's a 2 dollar fee... Still, very glad to have this option nearby.
This looks to be a great neighborhood tap room. We just popped in for a mid-afternoon brew on a nice spring day. There are about 15 or 16 interesting beers and ciders on tap with more options in the large cooler. We enjoyed the pleasant back garden but it appeared to us that, on most evenings, the main action probably takes place in the large front room. (There is also a bar food menu which we failed to examine.) If we had not known exactly where we were going, we would have easily overlooked the place as the "Covenhoven" signage is pretty subtle.
Cute spot with nice outdoor areas. Great selection of beers. Good for small groups. Every can has a cheaper "to-go" price as well as a more expensive "for here" price. They also have apparently stunning grilled cheese sandwiches but I didn't get to try one - though they smelled amazing.
First time was great. Wish they had more lager and less IPA on tap and maybe some more dark stuff for the lady, but the can/bottle selection is impressive. The grilled cheeses stole the show, will come back just for these. The seating is limited and the staff was not very accommodating or clear about what's expected from the patrons in terms of seating...they seemed overwhelmed on the second visit although it wasn't too crowded. Will need to learn the right time to go and when to avoid.
I truly love the seating outside in the back patio. The music inside the bar can be a little too loud sometimes. The staff can be hit or miss. The food is pretty good. Try the grilled cheese with fig; it's delicious! They also offer a decent selection of NA beers which is amazing! I no longer drink alcohol so this is a plus for any beer hall/establishment!
a little dark for my preference, and eyes while perusing the beers in the coolers; but, a solid selection and reasonable prices. did quite enjoy the outdoor garden with a cheese plate. definitely need to try another outdoor or maybe indoor food exploration and enjoy some great suds!
Mixed feeling about this place. At times the beers and staff are spot on. Friendly atmosphere and solid beer selection. Other times it felt like I was doing them a favor by coming to the bar, giving me short answers about beer questions and the beer tasted like it was old.
Great beers on tap and delicious grilled cheese sandwiches. On the day I went there was only one guy running the whole bar and he was clearly stressed out and pretty grumpy. I'd be grumpy too if I was managing such a big crowd by myself!
The space has a great vibe and there’s an awesome selection of tap and canned beverages. The spot we sat in had music so loud we were shouting to hear each other. The plant-based food selection also needs an upgrade, especially since you’re not allowed to bring your own food.
I’ve been a few times and the selection is nice, but the service is odd. My bartender never checked on me once. It seems like they prefer a certain type of customer that is not me. Sign of the times i guess. I always tip!
Rats run the backyard after dusk. Food service is very slow but the grilled cheeses are quite good once they arrive. The inside is cozy but very loud when even mildly crowded. Good drink selection.
Do not go here on the weekends; save yourself the time and go elsewhere. I wish I could give this place five stars because its beer selections are delicious, numerous, and impressive; however, the service is TERRIBLE. I waited nearly 2 hours for a simple grilled cheese sandwich, which never came. A biergarten is only as good as its accompanying dishes in my opinion, so this was a grave strike against this place. The backyard area is lovely and the beer selection is extensive. So, if you DO plan on going to Covenhoven, resolve to only drink beer and do not order any food. Also, one of the bartenders was pointedly creepy towards the women in my group, which is unacceptable.
