This place has been here for decades! Since we moved to Brooklyn back in the 80s! And it probably was there a long time before that! Great delicious Central American food!!! The owners and staff are great people!
I've been here twice and ordered about 10 items and literally every single one has been satisfying. I'm not Dominican, but lived there for 2+ years and this is the place that hits the spot when I'm craving some Dominican food. High grades to their pernil, roast chicken, carne guisada, and sancocho. Side dishes are all very satisfying as well. Pastel en hoja was a big surprise in being absolutely delicious. I look forward to making a habit out of going here. Good place to bring a group to share food, especially since it's a bit nicer than your typical "Spanish food" (as they say) spot.
I've been going there for more than 20 years. Service and food are impeccable! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great place for some down to earth food, nothing fancy only flavor!! Love it and would recommend to anyone who looking for good dinner meal
Their Pernil, while chicken and ribs are amazingly delicious. The best Pernil I have had (and I’ve been to Puerto Rico where they say theirs is better lol )
Delicious and affordable. The mofongo with pork was so tasty with a delicious sauce. Tostones with garlic were out of this world. I will definitely come back.
My favorite spot for comfort food. Their chicken soup heals any cold, and their sandwiches hit the spot. Great green sauce too
I have been enjoying this food for years the fish fried is an excellent idea the peppers steak is delicious love me onions.
Love this place Food is fresh, well prepared and service is fast. Wait staff is always friendly and helpful. It's not a five star but it a five star to me since they serve exactly what I like as i like it. dios de vendiga, I think. In English God bless you.
The food is delicious. My favorite is the pernil (pork) but they're known for their rotisserie chicken. I also love their oatmeal for breakfast.
It is always a great experience. Tasty & FLAVORFUL food. LOVE THE CHICKEN PASTELES. My go-to place when in the Brooklyn. I got baked and stewed chicken with yellow rice and black 🫘.
Great diner! Super friendly servers and the food is very tasty. I order the Spanish Omelt, and I wanted to lick my fork each time I ate the food from it. Located in Flatbush Ave in the park slope area - even better if you sit close to the window. The only frawback is that they do not serve breakfast all day - breakfast stops here at 3pm.
Gran Castillo has been one my go-to places (for both take-out and dining out) for 16 years now, since I moved into the neighborhood...being from a Caribbean background, their cuisine is comfort food for me and it's been consistently delicious! The staff has also mostly remained the same with a few additions, and it's really contributed to the warm and home-y atmosphere. I highly recommend Gran Castillo for their authenticity and great food!
Just came back to NYC after leaving for 6 years. And where did I have to stop, for some great food. This place. This place is always clean, staff always friendly and the food always good. And after 6 years away, I'm happy that quality and a great price has not changed😁😁👍👍
Baked chicken is unbelievably good!!!
If you’re looking for a great local spot for Spanish/Dominican food, this is it. The food is so good, I can’t stop coming back. Every plate really feels like it was my mama who cooked it in our kitchen with her whole soul. Nothing’s really topping this, and the real know what’s up.
the food is amazing i am a picky eater and so is my family we were looking for a restaurant and we stumbled upon this one and this is so good! love love love it i recommend stopping here
Amazing food, huge portions, and friendly and attentive staff. I'm a regular -- at least once a week for many years now -- and everything I've tried there has been delicious!
Caribbean flavor at its best. Good portions which made me have to take some home. I'll be going back again soon. Five of us ate dinner for under $70.00
This Spanish food restaurant is just original and very delicious ,The food was just like home made, try the ox tail stew with rice and beans. Or the grill chicken. The portions are big and the price very economic
Feliz cumpleaños - Yes, it was my Birthday and I enjoyed me some spanish food😉 I tried yucca for the first time and it won't be my last. Run, skip, jump to this restaurant you'll love the food and atmosphere. Muy Bueno.
Great food sever by friendly servers. Price is right and options are expansive. Good also authentic. Location convenient. Busy but not a long wait.
Absolutely delicious! I went there with my family and was extremely surprised! The Chicken was tender, the rice fresh and the beans.. oh my god the beans! Speechless! It is worth the price
If you ever wanted to come to spot that had that taste of mom's cooking this is the place. Some of the best home cooked Caribbean food from either DR, PR or Cuba you'll ever have. Any time I'm in the area I stop by for a bite to eat, it never disappoints. Definitely hit them up when you're in the neighborhood!
10/10 love eating here the food never fails to impress and tastes really good. Their menu has a wide variety of spanish food, personally I like to get chicken and rice and I am beyond satisfied each time. Not only is the food nice but so are the workers the waitresses are kind and respectful. I have been going here my whole life and I have never had an issue would recommend to everyone.
Been a patron, along with your family for at least a decade. Great food....true to their Dominican heritage. The owner is a great guy. The wait staff is always friendly, personable and accommodating. And , by the way, prices are very reasonable. Come out. Go in. Enjoy.
Am from out of town visiting my niece. First visit recommended by my niece. Parking was a problem but, it's Brooklyn. The food was excellent and the staff was helpful and attentive. It was a little pricey but...it's Brooklyn. I would/will eat there again. I like Carribean cuisine when done very well.
Always great food. The baked chicken is huge and delicious. I came in to order for takeout and I was in and out. I just wish they did a delivery service. But nonetheless, a gem in Flatbush
Delicious Mofongo fusion! Loved it!
We love this place. The whole chicken and pepper steak are our go to items. Food always tastes fresh. Eating their is like a piece of home. We moved out of the neighborhood but we still go back from time to time. In fact I'm picking up some dinner from there on my way home tonight.
Great casual neighborhood spot with friendly staff and good prices. Solid Dominican food.. especially the rotisserie chicken and pernil. Good for eat in, take out, or delivery (phone orders only). Love that they have a selection of can juices for that extra Dominican flavor. Breakfast is not as strong, but they are open early and kid friendly, so worth a visit - the coffee is good.
I've been here many times over the years. I remember it in its old location. I'm never disappointed, and I always feel taken care of when I come for mofongo, mangu or chicken soup. It's one of the few places in this everchanging city that feels like home.
What a wonderful place! After 15+years of not visiting this restaurant I stopped by and was happily surprised to see the same original owners. The food didn't disappoint at me at ALL it was delicious. Great work I also love their new location..
My family comes here often because the food is so good and affordable. Portions are sizable where you can bring leftovers home. Our favorite go to meals are the half chicken, white rice with beans, the Mofongo with pork, the pepper steak, flan is yummy too.
It's a decent food with a reasonable price, many Caribbean or Latin restaurants are expensive compared to American restaurants, This place have a lot of delicious Dominican dishes and I recommend to eat different appetizers, an small dish and some dessert and I promise you, you will not spend to much money and will have a good experience.
I haven't eaten here in fifteen years, since I permanently left NYC, but still dream about the stewed chicken, yellow rice, beans, and plantains from time to time. When I lived around the corner I ate there between lunch and dinner three to four times a week. More than any other atmosphere and local dive, this was my place. Cafe con leche for the closer. It's an asset to the community.
One of the best Dominican restaurants I've been to and everything is at a good price. It has become my go-to spot for some good sancocho y jugo de chinola (passion fruit juice).
Delicious food brought to you quickly, hot and as good as your grandma's best dishes. Their mofongo and rice with gandules is a favorite.
Traditional Latin cuisine! The food is very very delicious and the servings are exceedingly generous. You definitely get value for your money there! The service is really good. Everyone there is super friendly and makes you feel at home.
Food tastes as if my grandmother was in their kitchen whipping up amazing food. I have yet to experience anything that wasn’t absolutely delicious. Ribs, pernil, Chicharrón, seafood, beans, soups, desserts, the list can go on. Make your way here, you won’t be disappointed!
Excellent food and a welcoming environment. A cozy, well-priced gem in this area! You will not be disappointed.
I was honestly in and out. The selection of food was easily explained and priced very fair based off the amount of food I ordered. The staff had a great energy and was very friendly. When I got home to enjoy my meal I was blown away by the taste. The rotisserie chicken was fall off the bone moist and packed with so many flavors and spices. I live in Jersey city and I would literally travel to Brooklyn daily to get that taste again. 5stars hands down!
Good for midweeks or “don’t know what’s yo eat tonight! … Family meals satisfying.
I am a foodie and employee for Citi bike, with that being said I travel a lot and eat in many places and I ain't going to lie the pollo al horno with tostones hits at this spot.
Came here after dreaming about trying mangú for years. The mangú itself is not on the menu, but comes with salami, fried cheese, and pickled onion. The pairing was perfect and the acidity of the onions matched well with the salty fattiness of the cheese and salami. We also got the pork chunks with beans and rice - also super delicious. The passion fruit and tamarind drinks complimented our meals and we were happily stuffed after (portion sizes are quite large).
I always have the same waitress and she is super sweet and always talks to me and tells me stuff about the Dominican Republic where she’s from. The food here is solid and the place as a classic diner feel, with big booths to climb into with puffy seats and backs. I love the roast chicken with black beans and rice. Sometimes I get maduros with them too. They have milkshakes here as well, and ice coffees. It’a a big traditional Dominican menu. I come here probably once a week by myself and it’s always a relaxing stop.
It’s really important to skip the big chains and go for a more delicious, affordable, and meaningful option like this amazing restaurant! The chicken was juicy, rice and beans were perfectly cooked, everyone is very friendly, and don’t sleep on the Dominican breakfast with queso frito!
Probably THE best Dominican food in Brooklyn. I come here often for my favorite dish which is the oxtails. I've had Dominican food elsewhere and I just can't compare. Their rice is just better, their beans are just better. All the dishes I've had have been to satisfaction. Seat yourself and fast service is another thing that keeps me coming back. Highly Recommended!!
Simple and pleasant, this is this Dominican restaurant with great food at a good price. Very good service.
Food was delicious, prices were great. Good service. Was hoping for a homemade Sangria but overall great lil gem of a space.
Im glad they were able to return to the neighborhood. The food is good. Im going to retry the menu
Cuban-owned into the 1960s (named after the fortress near Cienfuegos, Cuba) then Puerto Rican through the 1970: Dominican-owned and operated since the 1980s. Good food at very reasonable prices. Convenient location. Friendly staff. Centrally located near Prospect Park and the Barclays Center in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Daily specials under $8. Sancocho, arroz con gandules, ensalada de aguacate, hamburgers, cuban sandwiches. Wine and beer. Expresso, cafe cubano, regular coffee. Water. Attentive waitresses. Right on Flatbush Avenue.
El Gran Castillo food is good. I liked it when they was on the corner, a much bigger space. Glad they stayed in the neighborhood. I had the cheese steak sandwich last night it was REALLY good, not chewy at all.
I had beef stew with white rice everything was nice and tender delicious my husband had arrow con gandules with penile arrow con gandules was good penile was dry and burnt pieces
I have been going to this place before they can to this location..I recently had a buisness meeting here service was quick, staff attentive, however this last time the food was or seemed a bit too flavorful. I belive in food having flavor but enough that if I wiah more I can adjust to my own palette..other than that enjoyed every bite especially the fish
I enjoyed my time here. I met a friend for brunch and although my friend was late they accommodated me in the mean time and made sure I was comfortable. The waiter made sure to check in on me until he arrived. The food here is great and I have no qualms in reference to food or service. Its a cozy restaurant that is' centralized and easy to get to in Park Slope. Its affordable and comfortable. This spot is also wheelchair accessible. Check it out!
Very good Spanish American food. A step above. Very reasonably priced. I've only eaten dinner there...regularly.
Have have patronized this restaurant for over 10 yrs. However, my most recent visit was disappointing: the rice and gandules was cold, but the rotisserie chicken was the most disappointing. The chicken was dry and hard as though it was over cooked. If I did not live a distance from the restaurant and so hungry, I would have returned the unpleasant food.
El Gran has been receiving my funds for more than a year, their food is extremely delicious. And not to mention very affordable, I often bring my daughter or sometimes friends. Staff are great (only thing is I don't care for their burger).my first time eating it today, it is like McDonald's or Wendy's. Other than that everything else is great!
The lady who greeted me and took my take out order this morning was very nice and welcoming. I got the breakfast special with eggs, home fries, queso frito and fried salami. It was good and was $13
Delicious sancocho! Service is really nice and attentive, there is an ATM available which is always handy (You can pay with card anyways.) Yuca fries were great yet not the freshest. This is the type of spots that remind the humans of New York of our delicious latin american roots. Rice and beans are great (as expected) . On the down side, ghis place is extremely over priced as compared to other latin american options in the area.
What am I to say about this restaurant? Well let's start approximately 30 years ago. Yes about 30 years ago. I attended School in the area my father owned the biggest body shop in Brooklyn at the time before I go into work he would stop here with me before taking me to school to sit down and have something to eat. This restaurant was not located on Flatbush but more so around the corner off of Flatbush Avenue or as known Flatbush extension. Papi was always order eggs and yucca he would order me the same thing but with bacon. It was something about the presentation of the food that always caused me to love taste even more. So while passing in the neighborhood now that I'm much older of course I'm going to look for this restaurant and I did and I found it. I am falling the waiter that I used to come here when I was much younger with my dad and I asked whether not the owner is still alive or whether or not he sold the place to someone else. Given to taste of the food I can tell is still all in the family. When I made my order I was told there was no cassava so of course I was disappointed. However I decided to try the mangu. It was absolutely delicious it wasn't hard it was nice and soft perfectly seasoning and the onions on top made for it to be absolutely delicious. The coffee is always top notch and hot topped off with the hot milk perfect for summer winter spring off all. I will be back because I know that family still owns this restaurant and they do know how to treat their customers. I just wish I I was able to stop in for dinner cuz I do remember they made the best tasting we roasted chicken I've ever had from the Spanish restaurant in downtown Brooklyn. You guys can continue to make my breakfast I'll see you again and again and again and again. And I will blame my weight gain on you LOL thank you so much for staying in the neighborhood through the pandemic through the crazy rent height. The business is a fixture in the neighborhood.
The food service is great! But waitress service is ehhh!... the ladies rather chat about their personal lives than service customers. When I called her over, she was annoyed. Which made our dinner experience rather uncomfortable.
It could be better. I ordered roast pork and they told me it would take an hr to cook. I was a little disappointed but the beef stew somewhat made up for it.
El Gran Castillo De Jagua is a quaint diner dishing some of the best Spanish food from the Dominican Republic. But while the food is tasty and affordable, the decor and accommodations takeaway from what should be a delightful dining experience.
This is a great place to order some of the best made dishes. Their foods are amazing and never disappoint your taste buds. Unfortunately, their delivery services is the main culprit. Anytime i place my favorite order, there's always a mess upon the delivery. My food is always spilling and a portion of 40% is wasted. Don't think i am paying to have my food delivered while it's already spilled in the bad. Do better and make our money worth it. 5 STARS for food. 2 STARS for delivery.
So far I have only gotten delivery. I am friendly with one of the guys at my local liquor store. When I went in last week he was eating something that smelled delicious, so I asked where he got it from. And he told me about this place. While it did take some time to get to me and the food arrived a little cold, it was delicious. Super friendly service and yummy food. This is getting added to the regular roster of delivery spots.
Had roasted chicken... delicious. Garlic bread and fried plantain, also very good. Other things mixed review.
The gentleman was very nice, inviting, and made me feel welcome. We have dined here on and off for years. Love the rice, peas, and garlic sauce. Regrettably, the female (the one that is taller than the shorter woman) wait person was not pleasant at all and added to the lackluster meal.
Generally speaking, the place is solid. Food is usually good. Taking off 2 stars because 1) the workers do not ever wear gloves when handling food which is gross 2) they sometimes sell food that has been sitting out for a long time. the last time I went there I got oxtail ($18!!) and the meat was hard.
The fountain drinks and the homemade ice tea and lemonade do not come with free refills, the fried pork chop was dry but well seasoned...the service was decent, I only rated my experience 2 stars because I was thirsty 😅
Food is on point, good quality and value...but the waitresses are beyond rude. Go for the food if you can tolerate the ignorant staff. Unprofessional neighborhood grub.
I had to order to go because I sat at a table and no one acknowledge me, they didn’t bring me a menu. I found it very rude so I got up to order otherwise they would not attend me. I saw the waitress give menus to others. Poor customer service!
Food is okay, Staff sucks. Snooty stink attitude waitresses. Who don't like to see mixed couples or just have a problem cause nobody wants them. Old stink ads attitudes. Other than that it ain't worth it. El Paso is better.
The 2 stars are for customer service, they are so nice and polite and will help you with any and everything. Bbuuuttttt, the food is bland, I said wait do I have Covid because I can't taste this. Disgusting. They should fire that cook. No way the chicken taste that bad and let's not talk about the stale bread and the overcooked soup. Chile please.
The rice has no taste, my chicharon de pollo was burnt and dry, was barely served any beans ( all juice ). Not very tasty food at all. SMH They need new cooks!
I ate here before and the food here is really good, brooklyn gourmet spanish food & a great addition to my neighborhood. however today I got baited into paying 16.88 for the lunch special because I was eating in and everything was on separate plates. the first time I went the gentlemen told me the lunch special was 9.00, and I still sat in. I understand the first time it was in a to go plate but this is a bogus policy in my opinion that is an easy way to bait money from customers. I ended up paying 17 in the end because of the card fee. please do better at letting your customers know about your specials beforehand. I didn’t even ask for my food to be separated they forced it on me. I will likely not be eating here again. the lunch special should be the same price whether its to go or to dine in! not an extra 7 dollars just cause you wanna put the food on separate plates! absolutely ridiculous!
Young girl at the counter on her cell phone. Did not greet me when I approached her and had an attitude of not wanting to be there. Two other servers on their cell phones as well. Whatever happened to NO CELL PHONES IN THE WORK PLACE! Ordered Mangu with cheese. Mangu was not made right and very lumpy. Restaurant didn't look clean either.
This place plays dirty pool with customers health and there money.i ordered several times there. They sent me someone else order.i call explained the problem and the after much waiting the delivery man came I gave him another tip because of incliment weather.wene we opened the bags we were horrified to see that the aluminum food trays had been opened and it seems someone had eaten some of it.i called again and it seems that the delivery man picked up the order from the people he gave it to originally.i called again and demanded that they send me another order that hadn't been touched by the general public.we received another order But my wife noticed that they merely exchanged The old tray for a new one and simply placed the rice beans and pepper steak back.my wife knows Very well the practice as it hasbeen done to us in the past.we complained again. It was 9pm by that time wetold them we did not want that food They said they are closed and would continue this on the following day we never ate the food And never received credit for it.these are really low class people from the slumsof the Dominican republic stay away from this place if you value your health!!!
You should never come to this place. I just had a long piece of hair cooked into my French toast, and they acted like they didnt see it first off. Then they pulled out a flashlight as if I made it up. Afterwards they just say to the cook in Spanish just to remake the customer said there's hair in the food. Very unprofessional, and unapologetic for their own mistake. Will never return. They lucky I gave 1 star because this place didnt deserve that!!!
I hardly ever leave reviews, but the rotisserie chicken was so dry I could barely swallow it. Taste was bland. For 16 dollars, absolutely not
I got a small chicken soup and a small container of white rice. Nothing fancy. They charged me $8.99 for this. I was told the soup is $4 so I wonder if the small container of rice would have cost me more then the actual soup. The soup had only chicken bones in it. It is a total ripoff if you ask me. Plus the place is disgusting. Never going to this place again
On Sunday, August 14 2022 at about 4 or 4:30 pm I went to this restaurant El Gran Castillo De Jagua at 355 Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn and ordered half a chicken and rice & beans $14, I paid $15.25. I watch carelessly as the female waitress gave me the chicken piece that I wanted and proceeded to cut the chicken in half and then put my piece in the take-out pans and cut my chicken piece in to small pieces while I watch my food being prepared…however I should of stayed watching my food being put in the bag I stopped watching to pay for my food and didn’t check it again before I left the restaurant but I ask the waitress did she give me bread and she said she put it in the bag. Now fast forward to home 2 train stops and a bus ride I get all the way home open my containers of food and the trays was Switched ,You can’t make this up. The waitress for some reason gave me a different piece/ tray of chicken and a different container of beans. She just switch the containers for whatever reason. Unbelievable
Loved this Restaurant when in was in their old location, like in the corner I believe, took my family there who wanted to go for years, they've moved to Florida over 30 years ago, we went there today & they were all DISAPPOINTED, and so were we. My food arrived at our table 20 minutes before theirs did, and my husband's hamburger look like a kid meal, burger looked like those frozen burgers, came in a small oval dish, no lettuces and no tomatoes, and not even a slice of pickle, oh wait it gets worst, his fries got to the table like 15minutes later. It's absolutely terrible, will not go again..... Yup, were DONE with this place.
They change the price every day and put some excuses don't trust them
Add $7 to my lunch order. I asked for 3 pieces of fried cheese, maybe leftovers from breakfast. Lunch special $9. 3 pieces of cheese $7 Why are lunch specials not reduced if no MEAT is on the plate? Also seems like they make up prices. Nothing set in stone. Energy very dicey, women aggressive serving rice. Place gets 2 stars because of the elder gentleman who was patient, and calm. I've had better Dominican food. And I'm sad they are so close to Barclays and other downtown establishments. I have to speak up. Get well soon.
