In a landmarked building in Brooklyn, this remarkable, Victorian- design restaurant harkens back to 1879. We invited friends for brunch there and enjoyed a first class experience. First, the decor is exquisite (see photos) and their wait staff couldn't be friendlier. Then the food and drinks came! Their cocktails were well crafted (the Bloody Mary is a brunch favorite). We then enjoyed their poached eggs and sprouting broccoli on toast (so good!), fried chicken w/hush puppies & sriracha honey (to die for!), G&T steak and eggs (perfectly cooked steak & eggs) and finished the meal with their Brooklyn blackout cake (amazing!!) and fresh brewed delicious coffee. All this while surrounded by wonderful furniture, wall decor and lighting that transports you to an earlier, more civilized era. We have to return there for dinner!
I took my girlfriend to Gage & Tollner for her birthday. The service overall was fantastic, your water glass is constantly being filled up and you never feel forgotten (especially for how busy the place was on a Thursday night). We had a reservation and were seated immediately, and our drink orders were taken after our water preference. To start we had the Caesar salad and the hot rolls and both were delicious, our server even brought extra butter when we used all of ours. The croutons in the Caesar salad were delicious. For dinner we had the T-Bone for 2 which can be ordered pre-sliced. It was a very good cut of meat with a little too much fat but still amazing. For dessert we had the Brooklyn Blackout Cake which was also very good and not too rich for a completely chocolate cake. Finally, since I indicated on OpenTable that we had a birthday in our party there was a Happy Birthday card waiting at our table when we sat down and a candle in our cake complete with Happy Birthday written on the plate! (All a surprise). Overall, a great spot for steak dinner and especially a special occasion!
I sat at the bar for dinner and had one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. The food was fantastic, and the service truly set the tone for the night. My bartender, Kern, was outstanding: knowledgeable, friendly, and perfectly attentive without ever hovering. His recommendations were spot-on and he made the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. Between the great atmosphere, exceptional food, and Kern’s top-notch hospitality, this spot has definitely earned a place on my favorites list.
What an incredibly special place! Perfect for our anniversary celebration, although it's also the type of place you could go regularly without needing a special reason. Beautiful space where you just feel the history of it. Service was top notch from start to finish and the food was fantastic! Highly recommend the devila on horseback (bacon wrapped dates stuffed with cheese and almond), bone-in rib eye for two, and the baked Alaska. I already want to go back!
How to renovate an eatery! Ground floor is mirrors, atmospheric gloom and fabric wallpaper. A grand diner experience. Upstairs there are two speakeasy cocktail bars that are carefully decorated and have a nice atmosphere. It’s very “designed” and thoughtful, but such is the buzz and the pace of service that it feels real rather than a stage set. The food is standout. A limited but well formed brasserie menu caters to most. For us the standout was the beef wellington - exceptional. The squash and sprout side was beyond tasty. The famed naked Alaska defeated us - should be between four rather than two! So so sooo sweet (the Italian meringue is a marvel). One small demerit was that the Caesar salad was overdressed I didn’t mind but not to everyone’s taste. Great range of cocktails and thoughtful mocktails too. Wine list is very sensible indeed with a solid variety by the glass and decent prices. Staff were on point all night - really interesting to watch the teamwork and interaction. Beware that the noise level is savage. Consistently at the limit of being able to speak. Quietened around 10pm So go early or late if you want to chat.
Our favorite restaurant in Brooklyn! Great rotation of oysters during their happy hour. We love the friendly bartenders too especially Lucky, Rachel, Ben, and Kern! Aside from the oysters, our other favs include the hen of the woods mushrooms, she-crab soup, parker house rolls, and the shared porterhouse. If you're going for dinner, put your name in for the Sunken Harbor Club for a nightcap upstairs after your meal.
Gage & Tollner is a true gem and a perfect spot for a special date night. This historic Brooklyn steakhouse has been around since 1879, and it’s easy to see why it’s stood the test of time. The food is outstanding—classic surf & turf done right, with incredibly high-quality ingredients. I especially appreciate that their steaks are grass-fed, dry-aged, and many ingredients are sourced from local farms, which really shows in the flavor. The service is warm and attentive, and the old-school atmosphere adds to the charm. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but well worth it for the quality and experience. My only minor complaint is that the tables are a little too close together, which can make it feel a bit tight. That said, we’ll absolutely be back—this place is a Brooklyn classic for a reason.
Visit it on July 6, Everything was amazing from the charcuterie board to the beef Wellington and the desserts. We also ordered a bone in ribeye to split. We weren’t exactly sure if the food was gonna be enough but our server Brandon gave us the perfect recommendation and we had just the right amount of food for everyone. The atmosphere and attention to details all the way to the marble bathroom to the brass faucets it was definitely worth a trip from Manhattan. Ask for Brandon and Sheikh Brandon knows how to provide a great experience and knows the menu very well. Sheikh won’t let a single crumb on your table or your beverage to get half empty before he is there taking care of everything.
Whoa ! Great quality food and excellent flavors. To start, the rolls, broccoli, and Caesar salad was delicious and well developed. Our table also ordered the hen of the woods and oysters. A few of us split the Porterhouse for Three, which was excellently seasoned. To finish, the comeback special sundae was super amazing. I’m delightfully satisfied. One issue we had was with our steak — we ordered medium rare and it came more on the rare side. This is fine with me because I prefer my steak on the rare side, and the buttery texture and seasoning compensated. That being said, not all at my table preferred this. All and all, I’m excited to eat here again sometime. Super modern and classy atmosphere, as well as great service. Every course was so unique from the last, and deeply satiating.
A beautiful restaurant that makes you feel like you're stepping into old New York. Went here for my birthday with a group and they had a small handwritten happy birthday card on the table when we arrived. The drinks were all great. The Beef Wellington was fantastic! We also ordered a steak for 3 people and was slightly disappointed with it because it didn't taste like steakhouse quality. Still good food all around and fantastic service!
Came here for brunch a little bit ago and enjoyed everything we tried! We started with the Parker house rolls - which were seemingly fresh out the oven/skillet - and, though I am particularly bread-avid, I could eat like ten more of these. We also tried the guava-lime donut which was delish! Their other option that day was earl grey flavored and I kinda regret not trying that one too. For my main, I had the dutch baby pancake which was the perfect consistency and topped with a delightful apple mint salad. For the table, we also shared the fried chicken with hush puppies and sriracha honey - also great! The portions, generally, are generous so plan to come hungry!
We did the New Year’s Eve prix fixe and left feeling underwhelmed, especially for the price (over $200 per person with taxes and tip). While there were aspects of the meal I enjoyed, the quality of ingredients, preparation, and portion sizes didn’t feel like a good value. This was a meal I expected to blow me away. Both my husband and I ordered the steak and lobster Newburg, and unfortunately his steak was severely undercooked. He didn’t mention it until the end of the meal, so it wasn’t corrected, but at this price point that shouldn’t happen. That said, the service was very excellent. I needed to move tables due to a very strong cologne at a neighboring table, and the servers and manager were incredibly kind and accommodating. Service was the highlight of the evening ….I just didn’t enjoy the food enough to justify the cost.
Visited on 11/16 in the morning and had a reservation for one. I got seated quickly and the service started off well. The food was good overall, I had the House Rolls, steak with eggs, and fries. The fries were too salty and the rolls were average, but the steak with eggs was excellent with the sauce. The only downside was the constant check-ins; two different servers came by about every 15 minutes. I know they’re trying to be attentive, but it felt a bit rushed for someone who likes to eat slowly.
Scorched Cream crab soup. Waited 20 minutes for it. Think they made it on the fly. Steak was cooked perfectly but was so over salted , it was hard to eat. I love Salt ..this was ridiculous. The offered to make a new one but I was starving not have eaten since breakfast and then not having the soup. They took of 20% of the Price of the beef ...a gesture... Dessert Baked Alaska Meringue was sickly sweet but had a beautiful silky texture.T he Mint was overpowering . Service was very good except one waiter went to clear my plate ,Crossed over way to close to me , ruff table side manners. A Surf n turf was served uncracked lobster w no tools to do so... ridiculous! Don't bother waisting your time , money .
We chose this local restaurant to celebrate my son’s birthday because steak is his favorite, and we were hoping for something special. Unfortunately, I left regretting the choice. The interior and decor were lovely—elegant and inviting—but the service felt robotic. There was no warm welcome or personable interaction. When you go to a nicer restaurant for a special occasion, you expect a more thoughtful and engaging experience. This felt no different from a run-of-the-mill spot. We ordered the “steak for three,” but the portion felt more like it was for two. On top of that, we asked for medium, but what we got was definitely medium-well. The food wasn’t bad, but nothing stood out, and it certainly didn’t feel worth the price. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this place for a special occasion. It might be okay for a regular dinner, but if you’re celebrating something meaningful, I’d suggest looking elsewhere.
An extraordinary experience at this restaurant. Too many issues to list all but the most significant were serving fried chicken with hair on it and saying we shouldn’t worry because it was “likely” due to the inhouse plucking of the chicken leaving hair on the chicken. We then noticed another hair in hashed browns and after deliberation between two of the waiters they graciously concluded that it was a genuine hair. It took 3 attempts to find someone who knew anything about the wine they were proposing to us and when they did the sommelier came wearing a face mask - they offered very limited wine by the glass and the two whites offered were very poor. They did not charge us for the meal - in reality, we would have much preferred an excellent, hair free meal and paid handsomely.
