We had a lovely lunch in this very dog friendly pub. Great value on the lunch deal and Chloe was very welcoming and friendly and made a huge fuss of our dog and gave her treats and water.
What a gem! A lovely dog friendly pub with fab service. Our dog Rodney was loving the attention he received and even had his picture taken for the wall. We popped in to get out the rain and so glad we did. We ordered a chicken wrap lunch meal along with a kids mac and cheese. The wrap was delicious and the mac and cheese they put into a colder bowl and plate so it cooled enough so our little one could eat straight away. This was a lovely touch! Great atmosphere, lovely staff and great service. If your in the area, worth a visit.
We visited the pub on both days of our visit to Canterbury. It was very welcoming with a great atmosphere mainly due to the happy young man Joe behind the bar hence visiting on both days we were in Canterbury. Our dog Poppy even had her photo taken to go up on the beams of the pub along with 100’s of other dogs who adorned the pub.
Great food, great menu choice, great friendly atomospher cosy I love the little touches little lights on the ceiling the food was delicious my honest review as always, this is most probably the best beef burger (double beef burger) I have ever ate the flavour in it the sauces the roll was so good, not forgetting the chips, the chips had so much flavour, my mum had the chicken burger and I tried a very tiny piece of it yummy again the garlic sauce she had was delicious my partner he had the sausage, mash and peas with Yorkshire pudding and gravy again 10/10 I also tried I small bit of the mash and gravy the mash Mmm lovely nice and buttery no lumps at all creamy 😊 compliments to chef 👏🏻 would of like to of tried the deserts as sounded amazing but was very full up. If I come to Canterbury again which I will, I will make sure to pop in maybe next time I should bring my jack russell I'm sure she would love it too. this is a dog friendly pub and even has a doggy menu fab idea. They have a cute dog his name is rocco if I'm not mistaken he was lovely well behaved and was happy to pose for a photo with us the ladies toilets was spotless and also what I found a wonderful and thoughtful idea was, inside the toilet in a little drawers they do supply some ladies items if in need in a emergency I thought that was a very thoughtful and great idea. Toilets are not upstairs which is good no stairs to climb after a full stomach haha.... There is a smoking area outside nice seating Highly recommend eating here or popping in for a drink as you won't be disappointed great food, great staff/owners great vibe thank you for a great delicious meal and not forgetting your friendly service felt very cosy and relaxed. The photos I had already started to eat and my partner had too so the photos are not great my only wish is that I wish I lived closer to pop in more but we are at Norfolk quiet a stretch away. Untill the Next time take care and massive thanks again
Everyone was so lovely and the food was incredible! I need to take my dog here now, he would love it! The staff were very helpful and recommended the best ale I’ve ever tried!!
Stopped by for lunch after a recommendation from staff at Canterbury Cathedral (a must see when in (Canterbury!!) The Barman was very welcoming and there were multiple menus at the tables. Order from the bar, carry your drinks back to the table and enjoy the atmosphere as you wait for your food. Which arrived very quickly. Had the southern fried chicken strips, side of chips and tomato basil soup. Great for a cold January day! It was delicious!! Chicken was juicy and the batter was tasty without being too thick or heavy. This pub is very dog friendly and has a menu for doggie treats too. If you bring your dog get their picture taken for the walls and beams. One of the top pubs we have been to on this 2 month adventure!
I went to Tomas Becket for its Sunday Roast, and the dish didn't disappoint, totally exceeded my expectations. Actually, the vibe was super relaxing and cosy; the dish was served quickly. What's more, the staff were really kind and easy-going, they treated the dogs, which visited the pub with their owner, like their own baby, it’s literally a DOG FRIENDLY PUB. Bonus: you might have a chance to hear K-Pop music here which is really rare in the city centre. The female staff, I forgot to ask her name, made the playlists herself, and danced very well.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Strongly recommend to grab a drink or have a meal with friends or family.
I stumbled on this pub while visiting Canterbury. The Sunday roast was good and very hot but the atmosphere was what made this place fun. If you’re not a dog person, it might not be for you, but it’s a dog friendly pub with actually dogs inside and photos of dogs who visit on the walls.
We celebrated New Year’s Eve here with my husband, and it was a fantastic experience. We had booked a table and the menu in advance. Our table was beautifully prepared and decorated, creating a festive atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious and generously portioned, so we left completely satisfied. Special thanks to the lady who worked that night – she did an incredible job managing the busy bar area while still providing excellent service to us and other diners. Everything was perfect! We highly recommend this pub. Happy New Year, everyone!🥂🎉 Wishing you joy, health, and success in the coming year. May it bring new opportunities, unforgettable moments, and endless happiness!
Came here for our Christmas day meal and everything was lovely. Friendly and festive staff, food was lovely. I had a Beef and Barley soup to start and my partner had garlic mushrooms. We both then had a traditional Turkey dinner which were massive and amazing! We both then had sticky toffee pudding which was sensational. We would like to thank the staff for all their hard work, they were great. The only thing that would've made it even better was if the people next to us stopped complaining about every little detail. We felt so sorry for the staff but they handled it with grace. Guess you do get some grinches on Christmas!
Came to the Thomas Becket for a Sunday roast with my friend. The staff were super helpful in making my friend’s bday meal special by playing music from her favourite artist, whilst bringing out her cake. They gave her a complimentary bday shot which was so kind! Food was delicious and service fantastic! Would highly recommend.
Christmas Day in a traditional English pub! We came and spent Christmas Day here and had a meal. Our experience was great! From Prosecco on arrival from the friendly staff to all of our courses being delicious! I came with my family and every one of us thoroughly enjoyed it! Unfortunately, we did over hear how some of the guests treated the staff and we were baffled. One table made two waitresses cry and when they were offered a refund they threw money back in the face of the manager, who may i say was sporting a lovely gingerbread man shirt, and said “Get me my food!” Very sad that people can’t just enjoy their day and appreciate the people who have given up their xmas day to accommodate us! Without focusing on the sad people. We would like to say it was lovely and thank you to everyone who worked and put in the time to make our Christmas Day in a traditional pub very enjoyable! We would definitely come back again! Well done to everyone at The Thomas Becket
Came here for a Christmas Day meal with my partner. I’ll get to the food later but can I just say that some of the customers in there had one goal and that was ruining everyone around them christmases. Screaming at staff and being egged on by their family around them for non issues. You would think Christmas Day would mean people would treat others with respect which was clearly not the case. Honestly shame on them. But onto the positives. The food was amazing for a festive dinner the food was above and beyond our expectations and our servers were lovely and really attentive. Even when they had to deal with a group of (and the only way I can describe them as) spoilt brats. Honestly full kudos to the team for doing their upmost to stay positive and make sure everyone else’s experiences wasn’t ruined. I really hope the team had a better Christmas by the end of the night and reguardless of what other people have said I would fully recommend this place to others. The process is really reflected in the quality of the food and the quality of the service
Great pub super dog friendly Daisy was even treated to a slice of roast beef and taken for a walk by the staff round the pub to meet the other patrons. Great choice of beers and first class food ( Sunday lunch)
Our 2nd visit to Canterbury and our 2nd visit to this lovely friendly pub. The staff are so welcoming and just really nice. We decided to eat this time and we really enjoyed our fish & chips. Its so so dog friendly. Our dogs had their photos taken...you need to visit to see why. Id recommend the Thomas Becket pub to all and we'll definitely be back.
I came to this pub this evening as it was recommended to me by a friend and can I just start by saying how amazing it was here? The dog photos all over the walls are an amazing touch, I loved the love cameras on the screen plus the bar staff was so bubbly and kind helping us with recommendations. I 100% recommend people to check this pub out when they get the chance!
Had Sunday roast for the first time and loved it here
I have been wanting this place to open for a while now and finally it's happened. I visited today with my partner and we were both left wanting more. Upon entry of this charming rustic and genuinely old but with detailed efforts to rebuild showing the old beams (obviously replaced with new but rustic looking beams), we were greeted by a very pleasant chap who was full of information and great advice. The beer was fantastic, clean, fresh and cold, service was impressive with a great atmosphere all round. The food, oh my flipping heck, wow. We had the pulled beef and caramelised red onion croquettes with a mustard mayo sauce, the Scottish smoked salmon with capers and sour dough bread and the sausages sweet chilli and sesame sauce. Everything was done to perfection, the decor was nice and kept to old roots. Honestly I could not find a single fault with this place today so will be definitely going back soon
Fantastic friendly staff, brilliant selection of Stouts, and Real ales, Best Atmosphere and fantastic background music.. The Halloween Decorations are above and beyond expectations... Absolutely fantastic, I will be back and I'm going to bring friends.
A lovely hidden gem, just off the High Street in Canterbury.
Lovely pub to bring the dogs. Good selection of beers and real ales, often from local breweries and at reasonable prices. Board games aplenty and a nice relaxed atmosphere, tucked away just off the main high street. Highly recommended.
One of the better pubs in Canterbury. Very dog friendly, they even have a dog menu. Awesome staff and always had a fantastic range of beer on tap. Beautiful setting. A proper English pub with a lovely fire. One of my favourites. I just wish I had more time to visit more often.
Came here for our work Christmas do. Food was outstanding and drinks very well priced. Absolutely love the smoking area with all the cool signs everywhere. Very happily will be returning soon! :)
The best roast dinners in Canterbury! I’ve tried them all and their roasts are the best. A little more costly than some but the difference in quality and taste is worth the extra splurge. It can be hard to get a table though, sometimes they let you book and sometimes they don’t. A couple times I’ve been told quite abruptly by staff that it’s walk-ins only and then gotten there not long after calling and been refused a table. It’s a shame because the atmosphere is so great otherwise. Definitely recommend if you can get a table.
Fantastic pub. It is the most dog friendly pub I have ever been to. Fair prices and friendly staff. Beer was nice.
Had a beautiful Christmas Day lunch here with family.. Service and food were amazing. Only let down was a few other customers behaving disrespectfully.
Food was Fantastic, waitresses very helpful and knowledgeable. Great little pub.
This is a fantastic find - staff are so friendly, food is good ‘pub grub’ and dogs are welcome! A real local for the city!
It was an amazing evening spent with friends. Food was absolutely spot on, and would absolutely recommend this pub for anyone to go out to. PS: it's dog friendly!!!!!
Quirky decor. Good range of non-generic beers. Friendly staff. Dog friendly and all reasonably priced. We vome here often when in Canterbury.
Our first ever visit to Canterbury today, fancied a Guinness in a proper pub…the Thomas Beckett didn’t disappoint, such a lovely pub with lovely staff and a proper Guinness poured correctly. Would highly recommend and will definitely be visiting again in the not so distant future.
Great ambience and good food, but the service wasn't too friendly and didn't warn us when the kitchen was going to close (there was only another couple beside us, so not really crowded or too busy) so we didn't get to order dessert. Other than that we had a nice meal.
Good location in the heart of Canterbury. Burger was with mid-quality meat and chips, served o.k. You cant compare with their photos on the web. However, local really good ale and atmosphere both saved us after a long hike from Ashford to Canterbury. Thanks.
Having been to Whetherspoons to find it was packed to the rafters this little pub just off the main high street was a great find, got seated straight away and service was quick. Only had sandwiches and a pint but no complaints, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff
Great little pub, on our way to the Marlowe Theatre. Great atmosphere & loved all the dog photos pinned to the wooden beams.
Out for a day trip with my son we stopped here because we had an hour til our train back to London. We ended up staying two hours 😂 It’s a quirky little place. We had the chicken wings which were very nice Music was good but not too loud But the thing that had us transfixed was the screen showing a live stream from a street in Tokyo There was another one in the other bar showing Dublin Crazy but brilliant Also the artwork around the bar is so good And one of the managers dogs came and sat with me for a while which was cool
Had a bit of a disappointing Sunday Roast. The local beer from Kent was nice and the environment is nice but the Sunday roast was very very bland, undercooked chicken, quite a small chicken and the gravy was very bland and flavourless. Was a bit disappointed because everytime I had Sunday roast they were amazing but this one was my first bland one. Would recommend this pub for everything else but maybe skip their Sunday roast.
We had both the pies on the menu, and they were pretty nice. Mulled wine was way too sour/tart. Extremely dog friendly but not at all child friendly (no high chair). Staff was not very welcoming. No cutlery or salt and pepper on the table or anywhere around. No paper napkins.
The food is great here, so tasty, had steak chips peas and salmon salad with potatoes olives etc both delicious, but the down side were the ladies toilets, they were terrible, needs scrubbing bleaching etc But everything was great!
Christmas Dinner at Thomas Becket – A Disappointing Experience We dined here for Christmas dinner, and unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the expectations set by the pub’s marketing or the price we paid. At £90 per person for a three-course meal, we anticipated a high standard of food and service, but both fell short. The service was unwelcoming, there were no pleasantries, and the food was simply dropped on the table. We had to ask whether drinks were table service or self-service, and basic things like clearing tables and replenishing salt and pepper were overlooked. Additionally, there was no toilet paper in the ladies’ restroom. Food Quality and Presentation The food was particularly disappointing. The prawn and salmon cocktail, which was supposed to come with Marie Rose sauce, was served with just two small lettuce leaves (Little Gem) and plain mayonnaise instead of the advertised sauce. The toast was burnt and dry, with no butter. My main course was forgotten altogether at first, and the sauces promised to others never arrived. The duck dish was underwhelming, fatty, lacking crispy skin, and accompanied by bland, watery red cabbage. The Tenderstem broccoli was undercooked, and overall, the dishes lacked seasoning and care. They felt hastily thrown together, with little attention to presentation or flavor. Discrepancies with the Website The experience was further misrepresented by discrepancies between what was advertised and what was actually provided. There was no glass of fizz on arrival as promised, although we were served random olives. This only added to the feeling of being misled by the pub’s marketing. Service and Management Response The manager did apologise and kindly offered our drinks on the house, but explained that refunds could not be issued, as payments are handled by head office. While this gesture was appreciated, it didn’t feel like enough to make up for the disappointing experience. The manager and staff blamed head office for the issues and never took responsibility themselves. They didn’t admit to any mistakes until we raised concerns. Simple things, like ensuring that ingredients are available and checking the website for accuracy, should have been handled better. Conclusion Overall, this was extremely poor value for money, and not the premium experience that the pricing and marketing suggest. Sadly, it is not a place we would recommend or return to. Perhaps it would be better for the pub to stick to a more straightforward menu, as the attempt to offer a “decadent” Christmas experience felt far from successful.
We booked a table for seven to celebrate a birthday and unfortunately had a very poor experience. One of the reasons we chose the venue was the children's menu, but we were told there was not one, despite it being clearly shown on the website. We were seated directly in front of a very large TV, which was initially fine until the volume was turned up to the highest setting because the rugby was starting. We understand why a pub would be showing the rugby, but we now could not hear each other at the table and it was scaring the toddler. The bar staff were very helpful at this point and did turn it down. Again, totally understand why they would have the rugby on full volume, but they could have warned us when we booked that we would be seated next to the TV as we would have gone elsewhere. The starters arrived after almost an hour and they were very good, no complaints. The main meals arrived after another hour and were absolutely awful. Mistakes were made on 4 out of 7 of the dishes, and the chicken had clearly been under a heat lamp for a long time, the sauce had hardened and the meat was incredibly dry. The poor waitress looked embarrassed when she had to approach the table as she knew we would not be happy. Have given a couple of stars as the bar staff did their best to sort the situation and did provide a refund on 4 of the meals. To summarize, dreadful food, very helpful bar staff.
Dreadful food. I asked for a peroni and got a gluten free (GF) peroni when asked the response was peroni only do GF rubbish! The food well where do I start the starter was bland and the main I ordered lamb and got a piece of fatty lamb-not sure the lamb was even cooked! some potato in a small pan and carrots not worth the £90- both mains looked like they had been thrown on and wouldn’t even given it to dogs that were in there- one of which weed soon as we got there. When we spoke to the staff the comment was we are preparing another plate for you by then I was gone asked for the drinks bill which they didn’t even charge for. I get the impression reading other reviews that’s a common theme. We didn’t make it to the desserts but sounds like we didn’t miss much😄
Christmas lunch was not Christmas lunch, from the moment we walked in, there was an underlying tension from everyone in the restaurant, no staff looked up to greet and welcome us and we had to ask if our table was ready then we had to wait approx 15min before a family member had to ask about drinks. Starters arrived, I’d ordered the corn on the cobs and got a sliced corn on the cob just thrown in a bowl with no seasoning and very watery. My dinner guests ordered prawn “cocktails” which included burnt toast, no butter a small amount of little finger sized prawns and the smallest piece of salmon we’d ever seen, no sauce which we had to ask for but they only offered mayonnaise then approximately 45 minutes later, the main courses arrived. Three roast turkeys with no cauliflower cheese or pigs in blankets as advertised. The dishes were not hot, almost as if they’d been sitting on a counter, then came the 4th dish “what is that” was my first thought as it seemed as though half the dish was missing It was clear the staff could see that we were disappointed however we were put to the side. The waitresses blamed the kitchen and no real customer service, we did complain and the manager came to the table offering free drinks but no refund Unfortunately this was a very disappointing experience for us as we expected better for the money we paid and the website advertising was misleading, would not recommend
i’m writing about my experience from september last year as i feel people need to know this could be their experience before going. me and my boyfriend had booked for a roast for 1pm and when we arrived it was quite quiet so we took our time with ordering. food took an hour and a half to show and was all frozen store bought ingredients (unfortunately didn’t get photos of this). we then reached out to the management to let them know about our experience and was offered a free meal as a second chance to show what they were really like so we took the offer. on this occasion my boyfriend had got the battered halloumi and fries and i got the lamb cutlets. another 50 minutes later and this is what we were given !!! to say the least we were shocked and haven’t returned since.
Do not go for Christmas lunch here. Toast burnt black, lamb all almost all fat and not properly cooked… and a dog peeing close to the table during the meal. Experience ruined.
