Carr Mill Mall offers unique shops and a historic atmosphere, but is plagued by predatory towing practices. Many reviewers warn about aggressive towing, even for brief absences from the mall. While the shops are appealing, the parking situation deters many.
Tip: Be extremely cautious about parking; ensure you are actively shopping at the mall to avoid being towed. Read all parking signs carefully.

Love how old and rustic it is. Wish there were more businesses in there, but it’s always a treat to go there!
Full of great boutiques in a restored mill. My favorite store is Alley Cat Toys for my grandchildren.
Amazing spot. Used to be a Mill, no a shopping center with shops, restaurants, hair stylists, grocery market etc. For sure a stop worth going on repeat!
This mall has a set of unique and craftsman type stores. Jewelry, fragrances, toys, etc. Clothing stores, Tailor shop, and more. Check it out sometime!
An amazing antique mall. The biggest I have seen. You need to plan some time to see even a portion of it. Worth the visit!
I've been going there since I was a boy. Those cedar wood floors and the rich smell of cedar bring back good memories.
Very smart towing practices. Towing fee is approx $400 which is something a customer wouldn't likely spend in a year at the mall. You get more from squeezing them. If the towing company averaged 20 tows a month for 12months that's close to $100,000 a year. Its guaranteed work for a tow company. Now with that guaranteed work you're bringing to the table, why not take a slice of that pie. I'd be excited to see that contract between the Mall and Barnes towing ;) ABSOLUTLEY nothing illegal about it! Slightly unethical, but not illegal. I'm a little jealous to be honest.
I never actually went here. But I was stopped at the intersection for awhile. Google thinks I should review it. It was good, I guess
The stores are wonderful but the parking situation makes this place not really worth it.
My husband and I to lunch at Tandem restaurant. We parked our car in the lot and walked on the street adjacent to the lot because mt husband was on crutches. While we were dining, our car was towed. We were told that we “ left the property “ even though, we had proof that we dined at Tandem restaurant on the property. We had to pay $415 plus the charge for the uber to get our car. Total extortion. Who at Carr Mill is getting the kick back? Not the business owners . Unfortunately, we will not do business at Carr Mill and we will spread the word. Shameful.
Subject: Concerns Regarding Private Parking Policies at Carr Mill To the Management of Carr Mill, I am writing to formally express my disappointment and frustration regarding a recent experience I had while visiting your establishment, specifically the events that transpired during my attempt to dine at The Spotted Dog. As a resident of Pittsboro and a former patron of Carr Mill, I have enjoyed many visits in the past, often recommending your location to friends and family. However, my recent experience has significantly altered my perception of Carr Mill and prompted me to reevaluate my future patronage. On the evening in question, as I approached Carr Mill to enjoy an evening meal with my 92-year-old friend, the weather was inclement—dark and raining. Upon arriving, I parked in the lot, unaware that the parking was designated as private. Your establishment lacks adequate signage clearly indicating this policy, which contributed to the unfortunate circumstance that followed. My vehicle was towed, leaving us stranded and incurring an unexpected cost of $300, in addition to the taxi fare we had to pay to continue our evening. The lack of clear communication regarding parking policies places an undue burden on customers, especially those, like myself, who may not frequent the area as often. I believe it is essential for any business to prioritize customer satisfaction and ensure that the policies are transparently communicated to avoid such distressing situations. In light of this experience, I regret to inform you that I will not be returning to Carr Mill or any associated establishments. Furthermore, I urge the management team to consider revising the current signage and parking guidelines to prevent future incidents. I hope you understand the gravity of this situation and the impact it has on customer relations. It is crucial for businesses to create an inclusive and accommodating environment.
The property manager / owner is awful and has people watching you as you walk around. Apparently, he is so obsessed about people parking in his lot, he hired a team of people sitting in a room looking at cameras and tracking shoppers’ movements. It’s so creepy. Literally spying on you…and the whole place just smells gross.
You literally can’t safely park your car up here for any reason. Bring a Carrboro local I can’t even remember how many times I’ve walked by and seen someone’s car getting towed. I understand it’s a popular lot in the middle of town that gets a lot of people parking there when they shouldn’t but in all my life I’ve never seen such a tow happy parking lot. You know something is off when the owner comes here and leaves snarky argumentative responses to the reviews about it as I’m sure will follow this comment lol there’s entire Reddit threads, Facebook comments on every business in the mall, and loads of folks just trying to warn others not to park up here. You hate to see this feedback hurt the small businesses but it’s not near as harmful as the constant towing fear. I can’t tell ya how many times I’ve wanted to go to weaver but just go elsewhere to not have to deal with the paranoid of my truck getting towed. Chill out with it already it’s just a parking lot and if it’s full people are just going to park elsewhere, unless a car has been there for days or is a constant offender parking there for hours it’s really not that deep.
Don't park here, you will be towed and your Christmas will be ruined 🤑
Love the businesses, absolutely despise the mall itself for allowing Barnes Towing to pick off cars like flies, just because their owners decided to walk around downtown a bit after patronizing the mall. Absolutely predatory and pathetic. Carr Mill management needs to step up and let Barnes go hunting elsewhere. You're driving your customers away!
Not much there there. No compelling reason to shop here. Obviously lots of people agree with me. It's always dead. Predatory parking enforcement is the final straw.
Extremely aggressive and greedy owner. It is sad because there are some great businesses within this beautiful historic mall, but I don’t believe it’s worth supporting the owner by shopping or dining there. The towing is out of control, and I’ve just learned they will soon be doubling down on it when it has already been relentless for over two years now. If you do shop or dine here, I strongly recommend not using their parking lot as there have been several cases I have personally either seen or heard stories of where people are getting booted/towed that have not even left the lot. Now, this could be because their website states that they do not allow car pooling, so if any single person in your cars group leaves the property, your car will still be towed. That could have been the case. They are not environmentally friendly because they do not allow car pooling. This is not a safe, welcoming property, and the owner even less so.
Very disappointed with my experience shopping here. Walked off the parking lot the wrong way and they towed my car. Literally returned back as I heard my alarm but the tower proceeded even though I was physically standing there. Just crazy!
Going to add to the chorus of displeased reviews about towing practices here. There are no signs indicating from the street that this large lot in the middle of carrboro is not a public lot. I parked over by the railcars and there were no signs on that side saying to only park here if you’re exclusively shopping at Carr Mill. The only signs were all facing into the lot where you would not normally see them, and in front of a select few individual spots. I, like apparently many others, went to shop at the Mill Mall and then go to lunch across the street. When I came back a few hours later, my car was gone. The cost to retrieve my car was a 20 minute drive, a lot of stress, and $360 cash (or $420ish if you don’t have cash). About two days of salary for me, really appreciate that. It would be one thing if there were signs in every spot saying “if you leave the premises at all you will be towed” (which is not the case. The owner will argue otherwise when they inevitably comment with boomer rhetoric here). It would also be one thing if they had one large sign in front of the lot, facing the entrance, that you will be towed if you set foot out of the premises. Most companies foster good will with customers by allowing them to use the bathroom or park to continue their shopping elsewhere if they shop in their establishment. Not this one, extremely predatory and anti-consumer considering the generally friendly atmosphere of Carrboro. Finally, this is for the owner. I was planning to look at engagement rings here until my car was towed. Now your cut of the $360 towing fee is all you will get. You lost yourself roughly 10X more profit from your predatory, selfish practices, and a lot of ill will and bad sentiment. Will not be shopping here again.
Will tow your car even if you have plans on going in a store at the mall/in the complex. Predatory behavior, would love to know if they get a kick back from the towing company with their outrageous cost of 380$ in cash. Shop elsewhere, owner is obviously rude as per all of the replies on here, and tows peoples cars that would have loved to been a customer. Not a chance anymore.
If you enjoy paying $415 to get your car back after a quick shopping trip, Carr Mill is the destination for you. I parked, went inside for what I thought would be a normal visit, and came out to find my car gone — snatched up by the mall’s predatory towing partners like it was some kind of prize in a rigged carnival game. And if you think the management cares? Think again. Read the other reviews (there are plenty with the same nightmare story), and you’ll see the pattern: predatory towing, people rightfully upset, and Carr Mill’s robotic, tone-deaf responses that amount to “not our problem” or, worse, blatant blame-shifting onto the customer. It’s astonishing how consistent they are at not taking responsibility while defending what’s clearly a revenue stream disguised as parking enforcement. And the real shame? — the actual businesses in Carr Mill. I feel bad for them. I enjoy supporting small businesses in my community, run by my neighbors. They’re trying to make a living, but how can they when the mall’s parking policies are driving customers away? Who wants to shop or dine somewhere when there’s a lurking threat of your car being snatched and held hostage? The mall itself was adorable. But unfortunately, Carr Mill doesn’t want customers — it wants victims. Shop somewhere else.
Absolutely beyond unsafe to park in this parking lot. Don’t listen to the owner replying saying it’s “safe to park as long as you shop at the mall.” These people actually have nothing better to do than to tow your car if - god forbid - you park your car and walk to the sidewalk to walk around the mall to another entrance to it. Absolutely pathetic. $380 for that. Owner, please find something better to do.
I had the worst experience ever visiting Carr Mill in Carrboro, NC, during what was supposed to be a lovely outing. It was my first time in this charming city, and I started off excited, visiting Weaver Street Market and noticing a beautiful gift shop across the street. After shopping there, I returned to My Muses Card Shop for an amazing card with a black lab design. But then everything turned into a nightmare. When I returned to the parking lot, I couldn’t find my car where I had left it. With two little kids in tow, I was frantically running in circles, panicking and unsure what to do. I started imagining what life would look like without a car to get my kids home in the freezing weather. Someone from one of the shops noticed me running around in a panic and came over. They explained that my car might have been towed and gave me a number to call. Sure enough, my car had been towed because I crossed the street after parking in the lot. The fee? $380—or $300 if I paid in cash. I felt completely blindsided. Here I was, supporting local businesses, enjoying my visit to Carrboro, and this is the treatment I received? They towed my car because I crossed the street—no matter that I had shopped at the businesses in the area. Worse, it seems they were monitoring me from the moment I left my car, and no one stepped in to warn me until after the damage was done. I had to pay for an Uber, shell out $380, and endure freezing cold with my kids to retrieve my car. I lost the rest of my day, couldn’t do anything I had planned, and now my kids are scared to even drive in the car after this horrible experience. To make things worse, I was told I needed to drive from one store to another within the same lot to avoid being towed. Is this the standard? Do you seriously expect visitors to get in their car and drive 200 feet instead of walking across the street? And in a time when the rest of the world is fighting for freedom and safety, this is how you treat people? Monitoring families and punishing them for visiting local shops? P.S. adding the photo of empty parking lot Now, as I write this review and reflect on how to make this right for the community, I’m shocked to see that I’m not alone. Tons of other people have shared similar experiences, also paying $380—even after shopping there! So, is this your way of doing business? Is this really the reputation you want to build? In a world where safety and community should come first, this is appalling. Is this really the value your businesses are built on—monitoring and punishing visitors who are genuinely trying to support your local shops? I’m heartbroken that what started as a beautiful day turned into a nightmare for me and my two kids. Needless to say, I cannot recommend visiting this shopping area or Carrboro after this experience. Edit: Since there’s no way to reply directly to the owner, I’ll post my response here: Oh, so you know each customer and their personal information so well that you can confidently tell me what I did or didn’t do? Please provide me with your privacy disclosure policy! Before making any official statement, make sure you have your facts straight. When I entered your shopping area, I went straight to Weaver Street Market because that was the main reason I came there. Check all your cameras again before responding! Unfortunately, your response here only confirms the values on which you are building your business!
Towed my car after I bought groceries on a weekday at 2pm. I was parked for about an hour and the lot was maybe 1/2 full at most. I went across the street to pick up take out and apparently that gives them the right to steal my car and charge almost $400 to get it back. Never shopping here again. We used to love this place and would always take visiting friends and family to the stores, but this was malicious and predatory.
