AWESOME EXPERIENCE! We recently dined at a charming restaurant in Carrboro, NC, and I can't praise it enough. The cozy ambiance, attentive staff, and diverse menu made for an exceptional dining experience. Each dish was well crafted, showcasing the chef's skill and dedication to quality ingredients. The cocktails were amazing and well thought out. It’s evident that a considerable amount of time and effort was put into this restaurant and I highly recommend this gem for anyone looking to enjoy delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere.
This was a really cool find for my wife and I. We vibe inside was very relaxed. The sushi is amazing, we got the Diablo roll, yellowtail nigiri and the Chirashi. Everything was delicious and the cuts of nigiri were practically perfect. Really cool to see the owner walking around talking to patrons as well as bussing tables. We will definitely be back.
This is one of my all time favorite places for sushi! You can’t beat the atmosphere, and the carefully chosen details to create a warm and welcoming ambiance. The staff is always friendly and the chef/owner always makes sure the guests are happy with their experience. Highly recommend!
Sora Sushi & Bar is truly special. Chef Yung Nay is incredibly talented and so thoughtful, and the entire team goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed and taken care of. We brought our team in, and they handled our group with such care and generosity. The sushi is outstanding - easily the best you’ll find in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area! Amazing food, but even more amazing people. We’re so grateful for them!
This is one of my favorite spots in the area! The owners are lovely people, the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable, and the food and drinks are fantastic. They have recently changed their menu, and it is phenomenal - the Hono Shrimp is a must-try. The shishito pepper appetizer is also delicious and one of my favorite ways I've ever had shishito peppers. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in Carrboro!
Our server (Konstantin) was excellent—very attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience smooth from start to finish. We started with the tuna crispy rice, which was amazing, and for the main course had the Forbidden City noodles with duck, which were extremely flavorful and cooked perfectly. Overall, great food and great service. Would definitely come back.
One of my favorite spots to grab a bite when I am in Chapel Hill! I’ve been coming here since it was La Montana and now I get to enjoy the Sora menu! This past weekend I was served by Natasha and she was truly wonderful! All of my needs are always met when I visit this location and I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the Chapel Hill area!
An Unforgettable Night at La Montaña: Carrboro's Best! La Montaña isn't just a restaurant; it's an experience. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was vibrant, yet comfortable—the perfect setting for a date night. If you're looking for world-class cuisine and a truly impressive bar program in Carrboro, look no further. The food was absolutely divine. As a sushi enthusiast, I was blown away by the sushi rolls. They were impeccably fresh, beautifully presented, and every piece burst with flavor. It’s clear the kitchen takes immense pride in the quality of its seafood. My wife ordered the Forbidden Noodles, and it was the star of the table. The dish was rich, savory, and perfectly balanced, easily one of the most memorable noodle dishes we’ve ever encountered. Beyond the fantastic food, La Montaña excels in its beverages. The specialty drinks were innovative and expertly crafted—each cocktail felt like a unique creation. But what really set them apart for me was their outstanding bourbon selection. It's easily one of the best I've seen in the area, offering a great variety for enthusiasts and a perfect way to cap off the meal. The service was attentive and genuinely friendly, adding to the overall feeling of a special evening out. We highly recommend La Montaña and can't wait to return!
La Montaña is easily one of the best fusion restaurants near Chapel Hill and RDU Airport. Chef Yung blends Vietnamese and Hispanic flavors in a way that feels creative yet comfortingly homemade. Every dish tells a story - the flavors, ingredients, and presentation all reflect his passion and attention to detail. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the food feels like a home-cooked meal with global flair. Whether you’re local or just flying into RDU, La Montaña is a must-try restaurant that proves food truly can unite cultures. Chef Yung is an inspiring talent - his dishes are vibrant, flavorful, and unforgettable. Highly recommend this spot for anyone searching for authentic fusion food in Chapel Hill!
The food was wonderful! It was a busy night and the service was naturally a bit slow, but that’s fine and expected! Our waitress was wonderful, the owner came out to help bc they were so busy, which gave us a minute to chat with him. I cannot recommend this place more. Crispy tuna rice, bahn Mi tacos, and the queso fundito were all wonderful, as were the drinks. I will be back.
Had an incredible group dinner here - the staff was so friendly and the owner was incredibly kind and accommodating. I highly recommend any of the rolls and the Oaxaca Sol (one the of the most fun drinks I’ve had). Will absolutely be coming back and am excited to try the owners other place called Izas next door.
OMG this place is super AMAZING!!! The food is spectacular. The service was perfect. I had the pot stickers… the sauce was dreamy and the Biria empanadas were so good and plated beautifully. I really liked the guacamole sauce. I also had the dulce mango cocktail that I really enjoyed. My favorite dish was the crispy tuna sushi. I’m really picky with sushi and it did not disappoint. The decor inside is very classy and pretty. Honestly my favorite part of my dining experience was meeting the owner. He was sweet and friendly. These days when people are so preoccupied and unfriendly, it felt good to be treated so warmly. Thanks so much 🫶🏽
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! We had 3 dishes. The Tuna Crispy Rice is their most popular dish. The menu description doesn't do it justice. It looks like a sushi roll, but there is no seaweed wrapper. There are squares of rice cake on the bottom. The cakes have been seared so are quite crispy on the bottom. On top of that is tuna tartare, guac, and a glaze. Delicious! I also had bulgogi nachos. This dish was large with a good amount of well-spiced beef among other things. Not sure what the chips were made from (probably corn, but I am not certain) but they were fried and very crispy. I did get a piece or two of gristle in the meat, but it still tasted good. My wife had a Vietnamese beef "stew" that I would characterize as more of a soup. The broth had multiple layers of flavor and was quite good too. Our server was very personable and I liked her a lot. The owner comes to everyone's table to see how folks like their meal. My only quibble is that the wine list has only two whites and two reds by the glass. I would like a couple more choices. Same with the beers. You can park for free in the Carrboro parking deck behind the Hampton Inn. We will definitely go back.
The food was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented. Service was fast and friendly and the staff made sure we felt welcome the entire time. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate perfect for a date night. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great dining experience! We came for dinner and every dish exceeded our expectations.
What a great place to enjoy some Latin Asian fusion and explore the Chapel Hill area! Natasha was beyond lovely, giving us great recommendations like the Tuna Crispy Rice as well as overall providing great service! We ordered the Tuna Crispy Rice, Banh Mi Pork Belly, Char Siu Ribs, and Chicken Fajitas! Everything was fantastic. Will be coming back soon!
Finally got around to dining here. Actually, we’ve eaten at their sister restaurant (which is like two doors down) a few times & the last time we were there they had run out of a dessert we wanted & after telling us that they were out they came back to the table to tell us “hold on we may be able to find a solution”. Apparently they called over to La Montana to see if they could help out & the owner actually brought over a similar dessert. The fact that they didn’t just say sorry we’re out and moved onto the next patron but actually made calls, made me feel valued & we made it a point to ck out La Montana. We were not disappointed. The service was wonderful. Loved the vibe of the restaurant. The drinks were amazing. We actually had drinks from their special menu that changes. we were not disappointed. The food was delicious. We all stuck to mostly the Asian dishes instead of Latin dishes. The bao bun appetizers were amazing as was the edamame guacamole. my bowl which had a rice base was refreshing and delicious.
The Tamarind BBQ Ribs are delicious! Savory, a bit sweet from the 24 hour marinated honey and the tamarind dipping sauce adds a nice unique flavor to it. The Chili Garlic Lo Mein is not your normal lo mein flavor profile and well worth the price! Thier sushi is extremely fresh, flavorful and what we've been missing from most sushi places. I highly recommend you give this place a try. You won't be disappointed!
What a great meal! It was a pleasure to meet the owner who was very nice and let us know the story behind the restaurant as well as some of his favorite items for someone coming the first time. My wife and I got 3 apps, an entree, cocktails, and dessert. Left satisfied and excited to visit again!
This is one of the best new restaurants in this area. The owner / chef personally comes and greets all the customers. A person in our group was vegetarian and the chef made something special for him. The cocktails and their presentations are amazing. The chef has a personal story for each and every cocktail and he tells you that story while he is completing that cocktail presentation on your table. The service staff were incredible and genuinely happy and not someone putting up a fake smile because they have to. I have reviewed several new start up resturants and always have a few things that they could do better here and there. But La Montaña done it right from the start. Whether it's a date night or a family night or a night out with friends ... the vibe / the food at this resturants is curated to suit all aspects. Absolutely Amazing.
I got the ceviche, chili crisp cucumbers, and the shrimp tempura udon all to-go at about an hour before they closed. The ceviche was pretty good - the fish was fresh, and the bell pepper goes unexpectedly well with it. The rice cracker that came with it retained a bit of grease, but it wasn't terrible. The cucumbers are kind of a rip-off, because for $10 +tax, they just roughly chop up a half a cucumber & slice a radish. The sauce that goes on it is decent, but the cucumbers themselves needed to be seasoned beforehand. I actually ended up mixing the ceviche & cucumbers together with some of my homemade chili crisp. That was delicious. Now, unfortunately, the big disappointment of the night was the udon. I was so looking forward to the crispy fried shrimp & onion, only to find that for some shrimp-god-forsaken reason, they had stuck everything into one quart container. Why did you guys do that? Everything was so good otherwise :( I will be back though - I know we can do better
Menu is solid, with fresh ingredients prepared well. Service is just right: attentive without being overbearing. The atmosphere in the front half of the restaurant is very pleasant, although it can get chilly on a cold night because the tables are right near the door. The back half of the restaurant is much less pleasant, tan walls without decoration, a bit like dining in a hallway.
I will be back to try other dishes (I might do take out though). Some friends and I decided to try out La Montaña, really unique place. The food & cocktails were amazing, the service unfortunately lacked a bit. (For instance we had to wait almost 45 minutes for our drinks - I am not sure the bartender knew how to make standard classic cocktails) She did make an excellent specialty cocktail. I ordered the chili garlic lo mein, it was a huge portion of total goodness! Enough to take home for lunch the next day! Note to the owner: maybe update the online menu, as it does not match what you serve - several dishes were not on it.
I generally don't leave negative reviews unless it's an especially bad experience. Started off really well. I called ahead and asked if they had any wait and if they were kid-friendly. No wait, and they said there are a lot of menu items suitable for kids. Ordered: Birria Ramen Bang bang Chicken Pork Belly tacos Chips & Salsa The Bang bang chicken was great. The ramen was where it all went downhill. When it arrived, I was confused because it looked so different from what I saw on their IG (this dish was the reason we went there). So I showed her the photo from their IG and she said it was the same dish. I asked about the veggies and she said they're at the bottom (they're weren't) or they were out of veggies. I had also told her it was for my kids. Turns out, it "has a kick at the end" and they didn't eat it because it was spicy. Well, it was my fault for not asking if it was spicy and she didn't offer any resolution, so I ordered a quesadilla instead. I asked for two to-go containers to pack up the untouched ramen: one for the noodles and another for the soup. She offered to get it packed up. Again, this was largely untouched. She came back with the noodles shoved into one plastic container. I asked for a second container and when I separated it, either the soup was all gone, or they threw it away, because I had about a tablespoon or two left. It felt like a waste of the dish and it worsened my experience of their service. Meanwhile, another server came back and asked if we wanted more chips to finish our salsa. I said sure. When I got the check, there was a charge for "a side of chips". That would have been nice to know. I ended up calling that out and they were nice enough to remove it. But man - if management reads this: please don't post misleading videos and photos on IG and don't throw away food when you're packing leftovers just to fit it into a container. Will not visit this establishment again, which is unfortunate because the ambiance was nice and we were looking forward to it.
My partner and I were extremely disappointed by our experience on Friday, 2/13. We had a 7:30 reservation and arrived about 10–15 minutes early to make sure we wouldn’t miss it. When we checked in, we were told, “Sorry, there was a mix-up, but we’re working on it.” We weren’t told what the issue was, and shortly after, a table was brought in from outside for us to use. We stayed optimistic and excited to try the food despite the confusion. Unfortunately, when we sat down, the table was dirty. As soon as we placed our hands on it, dark powder came off onto our hands and clothing. We tried not to let this ruin our mood, since we had heard great things about this restaurant. It took a while for our waitress to come take our order, which we understood because they were busy. However, there was confusion with my order. I asked for salmon sashimi, but she assumed I meant salmon roe. When she brought it out and I explained I had ordered regular salmon sashimi, she implied I had ordered incorrectly and asked if I just wanted the roe instead. When I said I’d prefer what I originally ordered, she repeatedly warned that the kitchen was backed up and it would take a long time, which made me feel discouraged from getting what I actually ordered. Meanwhile, my partner ordered the midnight ceviche and we shared pan-fried pork dumplings. The dumplings arrived room-temperature, and the ceviche came without cilantro and with only two chips for the entire dish. At that point, we were so disappointed that we asked for the check while still waiting for the sashimi. When it finally arrived, it wasn’t bad, but it was so citrusy that the flavor of the salmon was hard to taste. Throughout the evening, our waitress (listed on the check as “Mridula”) was noticeably less attentive to us than to nearby tables. I’m not usually someone who complains about restaurant experiences, but this visit felt like one disappointment after another. The only positives were the drinks and, to some extent, the dumplings. I would like to give this place another try in the future, but given how disappointing our experience was, I don’t believe we will, particularly considering the high prices relative to the quality of the experience. I sincerely hope others had a better experience than we did on the night before Valentine’s Day. (I have provided a picture of my partners finger after he ran it across the dirty table, which isn't the best of quality due to the lighting)
Having tried La Montana when it 1st opened, I thought I would try their latest costume change to see if it was any better. Nope. We sat at the bar and the service was good, but the food was almost inedible. I ordered the Korean Chicken wings, which tasted like they had been fried in ancient oil earlier in the day, and then fired again to “warm up”. Chicken wings are usually one of those things that tastes great the next day, but I just had to toss the last two wings due to their foul smell. The sushi wasn’t much better. How can you make a California roll poorly? Substitute fake crab for fake crab “salad”. The rolls were small, the rice was mushy, and ingredients lacked any flavor. I can get better sushi rolls at the Harris Teeter 5 minutes walk. The website is rife with images of carefully prepared nigiri, but there are actually none available on the menu. Only rolls with thick neon sauces, dainty pieces of fish, and fake wasabi. I sympathize with the owner of this place; he must be locked into an expensive lease and needs a quick solution to put butts in seats. May I offer an insight? Cheap sushi with poor ingredients is not going to cut it. Find a middle ground between Akai-Hana and M-Sushi. There’s a huge niche to be filled, but another prime Carrboro storefront with mediocre food is not going to create any return customers.
