We had a great experience! The drinks were amazing, food was delicious, and service was above and beyond. Shout out to our great server Daniel T, he took phenomenal care of us the whole time we were there.
Absolutely wonderful experience the food was phenomenal all the staff were extremely attentive and amazing especially our server Carson who did a spectacular job the portions were very generous the tuna was cooked perfectly the prime rib was also cooked perfectly and such a fat piece and their aptly named best chocolate cake really was the best it's definitely a pricier menu but it's worth it 5 out of 5 recommend this place every time
The food here was amazing and the wait staff were just as amazing! It was an amazing first time experience! The salmon was amazing, and my husband loved his steak!
Elegant dining, food is top notch as well as the service. They have the best carrot cake that you will ever encounter. Salads are always fresh, pork loin is amazing. I don’t think there’s really anything you can go wrong with here. Everything on the menu is absolutely splendid.. I never knew they had sourdough bread and butter, but you can request it 😊❤️
Upon entering this restaurant, I was seated very quickly. My server did not hesitate to get my drink order taken. The menu was a little intimidating, but I promise you everything that came out of that kitchen looked so scrumptious. The mounds of mashed potatoes made me jealous that I did not get that for myself. It's the Mac and cheese that I received instantly made me feel I am thankful that I had what I received. The steak was grilled to perfection. The white bean soup that I had was so good, it had chunks of ham and bacon in it. Ultimately, I'm glad I came to this restaurant instead of outback steakhouse, which looked very dead inside and outside. I'm glad I went with my instincts and chose to eat here because after a really long day, having quality food in your body makes it worth everything.
Hands down, some of the best food I’ve had recently! The freshness of the ingredients and the unique flavors in the [grilled zucchini and prime rib were unforgettable. Customer service Leah at the bar go see her for top shelf service. Attentive and detailed oriented. Highly recommended for food enthusiasts and people wanting to go out for a Great experience !!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had a fantastic dining experience at J. Alexander’s in Chattanooga! From the moment I was seated, the service was top-notch. A special thank you to my server, Shane, who was attentive, professional, and truly exemplary throughout the evening. He made sure everything was perfect and brought out my cocktail, The (423), which was absolutely delicious—great balance and flavor! My steak and fries were cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and thanks to Shane, the service matched the quality of the food. I’ll definitely be returning soon!
I know it's a chain, but J. Alexander's just does everything the right way. I have never had a meal that wasn't equisite. The iced tea is even better than others. Try the Hyde Park with broccoli and cole slaw. Take a break from the carbs.
I cannot say enough good about this restaurant. The service was incredible; excellent wine selections as well. And when our first two wine selections happened to be out, the manager came to our table and offered us a more expensive bottle of wine for the same price. Table service was perfect - kind, Food met all our expectations and then some. Prime rib was amazing, as were their daily features. Key lime pie for dessert was a wonderful end to a memorable meal. We'll definitely be coming back every time we're in town. If you have a chance, take the opportunity to treat yourself and experience this restaurant.
We celebrated my daughter's birthday at J.Alexander's near Hamilton Place Mall, and I have to say their carrot cake is one of the best I've ever had—rich, creamy, and a must-try for any dessert lover. The menu also offers a great variety of options for vegetarians, and the other dishes we tried were pretty good as well. It’s a fantastic spot for special occasions or just a sweet treat!
Went here on a Saturday around 5pm. It took a little while for our server to get to us but when she did, Roxanne did an amazing job. She knew the menu well and constantly checked on our table, she even boxed up our meal for us when it was time to go. She recommended the chilli and we chose the Salmon Dip for our appetizers. Both were delicious, the Salmon was exceptionally good. I did swap out the bread for chips, but the bread wasn't bad. For the mains, we got the Rotisserie Chicken and the Rattlesnake Pasta. The chicken was great and the mac n' cheese was as they say "bussin". The Rattlesnake pasta was "ok", I expected something spicier but it failed to deliver any heat. It wasn't bad at all, just not what my taste buds were expecting based on the description. Overall this was a great experience and we will return in the future. If you like taking food pics and haven't been here make sure they seat you in a well lit part of the restaurant, if not your pics will suck.
I totally enjoyed myself, celebrating 13 years of marriage. Food and salad was on point.
Good food and good service. We both knew we wanted the steak frites before arrival, so we ordered promptly. We were seated before our reservation time and we're out in under 45 minutes. Steak frites is great - large, quality piece of meat with awesome fries.
They took such great care of us ! We made a reservation and they had a card waiting on us at our table with a carrot cake on them! The service was amazing as well as the food! If u have a special occasion i definitely recommend comming here you will be taken care of definitely! Also u never have bad service even when it’s a shift change !
Oh my sweet Lord!!! This meal was divine!! Quite possibly the best prime rib, rotisserie chicken, Mac and cheese and carrot cake we have ever had. Pictures do not do this place justice as it has amazing romantic lighting. This will absolutely be our Chattanooga “go to” from now on. Amazing service, Leo was fabulous, and the food is beyond delicious!
My party and I enjoyed our meal. It was our first time eating here. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice. My husband had a So-cal burger that he enjoyed. My salad was delicious. Our friend enjoyed the rattlesnake pasta and his wife said the shrimp tacos were good. Overall our first experience was so good that we stopped back by for lunch on our way home.
Went back after one year ( see previous review) and this time, our waiter and staff are more welcoming and warm, my wife ordered the steak Maui and this time was tender and worth the money. Smoked salmon dip was good and grilled salmon was perfectly done. Change is good and glad to see that ( for the better).
We enjoyed a lovely date night here. The service was wonderful. Our waitress was very kind and helpful. I got the special, steak with mushrooms and onions in a sauce, and my husband got the prime rib. The steaks were cooked perfectly! We also had the chocolate cake which was served with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious! The fine dining atmosphere made for a great date night.
Outside of the Caesar salad (which we can make better from scratch at home), the food is absolutely stellar here! Have visited several times over the years mostly when in-town for work events but has quickly become a go-to for many of us. Appetizers and Entrees are pretty much all amazing but don't let that fool you as the Desserts are exquisite. The Carrot Cake in particular (which is the size of a steak no joke) is PHENOMENAL. Place is certainly a bit on the pricier side but worth every penny and simply amazing food and atmosphere each and every time!
When I first saw the menu I was not impressed. It looked like any other overpriced American cuisine. But when the food came out we were pleasantly surprised. I had the Alex's salad which is pretty basic green salad for $9 but it was wonderful and the white wine vinaigrette was delicious. Husband had a steak burger which was fabulous and the loaded potato as a side was very good too. Even the sweet tea was perfect. Marie was a great server and all the others were attentive, drinks were never empty. Would definitely recommend!
Loved it all! The baby back ribs fell off the bone and tasted great. The Mac and cheese was very creamy with a crunchy top and the carrot cake was amazing! I highly reccomend this place!
Well, we started this meal off with the Mexico City Spinach con Queso pictured on the bottom here and must say, it was very mouth-watering and is deliciously good. I'm not really a tomato person so I opted out of the Tomato side, but the chips are really good. Now the Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter was cooked to juicy perfection. The meat was good and tenderly juicy. The skin had a really nice crisp and no greasy taste either. Do I recommend the meal, yes!!! Everything was good, and even our waitress was very attentive to our dining needs.. So, even though my experiance was not bad at all don't mean yours will be great... but you wont know if you dont visit... Enjoy 😜
Ate here last night. Food and service was amazing. Waiter kept our glasses full the whole time and recommend good dishes for both me and my mother. Even with both of our crazy food allergies. The only slight ding that I can say about it was that it was just a tad bit dark in there but that's how it's supose to be so I'm not really complaining about it. All in all. Will be eating here again.
Every time I eat here I’m blown away by something new. This time it was the smoked salmon. It was probably some of the best fish I’ve ever had, and the sauce that comes with it is literally perfect. The two staples I’ll never leave here without trying though are the Mac and Cheese and carrot cake. PLEASE do not leave without sampling some (or all) of both.
Best experience to date in Chattanooga! Gordon was fantastic......excellent recommendations, and his service was on point. Will definitely return.
Hour wait but once inside the service and food more than made up for it. The Mexican city queso dip was fantastic. The new York strip excellently prepared. The prime rib was also perfectly cooked.
We were looking for a fine dining experience and this place did not disappoint! Our waiter, Shane, was amazing and the food was even better!
10/1/24 I do not know what has happened to people these days? People used to dress nice at J’s and now they come in looking worse than what I would wear to Walmart. People just have no pride in themselves anymore. Lunch was great and service from Shane M. Was outstanding. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive to our table.
Oh my gosh! I can’t even begin to explain how delicious this meal was. I got the rotisserie chicken with a baked potato. The cheese was freshly shredded and the bacon bits were house made. The chicken au jus sauce to dip the chicken in was incredible I could drink it. The skin on the chicken was so crispy and seasoned to perfection. My boyfriend got the prime rib with mash and Mac and cheese. We thought the Mac and cheese was pretty sour so we didn’t care for it but if you like blue cheese, you’ll love it. His meat was so tender. It came out cooked rare instead of medium but it came back out in only 2 or 3 minutes and was cooked perfectly. The manager that brought it was so nice and professional. The server kept our drinks full and was very knowledgeable about the menu. I loved her. I can’t remember her name but she had curly red hair. We got a free piece of carrot cake to take home as well! We finished our whole meals except the Mac and cheese and we will definitely be back! The meal was $108 after tax and $140 after tip. I enjoyed this meal more than when we went to Ruth’s Chris! And we spent $200 there! Highly recommend you check this place out. We got our food in 15 minutes on a packed Saturday night. And the queso, so damn good! Super happy
I moved back to Chattanooga a year ago, I have never felt more at home and got better service than when I come to J Alexander’s. The staff (Leah, Anthony B, Jersey, Taylor, Gage, Amanda, Gordon) ask for them! The food is incredible and made from scratch! Also, if you do enjoy martinis or wine their drinks are incredible.
My girlfriend and I were recently in Chattanooga and this place was recommended to us. It was amazing! The rotisserie chicken and carrot cake were killer. If we move to the area, we will definitely be back.
Best service I have ever had in my life! Wonderful food! Pineapple marinated steak, seared tuna. Great atmosphere! Free dessert for my husbands birthday. Warm carrot cake to die for! Pricey, but worth every penny. A must try...
When you show up you will be greeted by a smile and a very happy worker. We were seated very quickly at a busy busy time of day. Lunch time. Summer was our server. She was well put together and wonderful to speak with. She was so helpful with the menu and very knowledgeable about it. It was our 1st time and having a warming server like Summer was amazing. 5 out of 5. Will definitely come back.
A Perfect Date Night at J. Alexander’s! J. Alexander’s is hands down one of the best date night spots in town! The ambiance is absolutely gorgeous—with low lighting, elegant chandeliers, and a cozy, upscale vibe that instantly sets the mood. The service was warm and attentive, and the food? Unreal. We both ordered chicken dishes—his was the smoky, flavorful BBQ chicken, and mine was the juicy rotisserie. Both were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Honestly, we couldn’t stop raving about them. If you’re looking for great food, stunning atmosphere, and a memorable night out, I highly recommend J. Alexander’s. Check out my photos from the night—like and follow if you’re into good eats and good vibes!
I’d provide the server’s name however she failed to mention it after we sat. She did immediately ask for a beverage order w/o allowing time to view the drink menu or even gather my thoughts for a drinking option. No recommendations or knowledge of the ingredients when asked. My salmon was amazing! I did not bring my glasses so I couldn’t confirm it being undercooked which I had a slight feeling. I ate it all it was seasoned to perfection. Cypress salad looked outstanding. The cornbread croutons are delish! The plain croutons in the Alex salad (think that is the right name of it) are great2! Train your servers(or at least that one)to be more present in providing the experience to your guests(it was my 1st time) it should reflect In her tips. Even though it is customary for 20%tipping, I thoroughly believe in providing proper service to receive that customary amount..I would do the same for you knowing you came out to eat at my place when there are 100’s of other options you could have chosen.. Money doesn’t grow on trees and you shouldnot expect the norm when you are not giving that 🤷🏿♀️
Met with my Sister, Brother and their families. We had a party of 10 and had reservations. The hostess seated us at a long table against a wall. Chairs were so tight together you had not even a 1/4 " between the arms of the next chair -- too cramped. Because of the seating people could not hear or communicate with others. Food is pricey but good. Service was good.
My husband brought me here for date night on a Saturday (super busy) and luckily we had reservations or it would have been up to 1 hour wait. We were seated promptly and presented with the menus. Service was excellent and the food was good. Not great but good. Something was lacking, overall for me. There wasn’t anything very striking or superb about their menu selection or the presentation once the food came out to the table. They did a good job, don’t get me wrong, but it seemed just average. Maybe it was the busyness of a Saturday night or perhaps I just didn’t feel their menu and presentation. I’ll try again on a different day of the week and compare.
Busy place long wait. The food was cold when arrived. Service was slow was very busy took awhile to get order and drinks. Know mostly for steaks upscale location large menu and desserts
Atmosphere and service is top notch. Food is a bit pricy. Quantity is fine, and taste is great. But is on par with places where the price is $20 per plate rather than $50 per plate. However, if atmosphere is what you want, then this place rocks.
My daughter wanted her birthday dinner here and y'all did not disappoint!! I reserved the larger U-shaped table and was seated right away. The service, food & atmosphere were great; the splash of Coke with my Crown was perfect, lol!! Worth every penny!!
Everything was perfect! It can be pricey, but worth it! The crab cakes OMGGGGG…. So good! The service was superb! But then I got sick about 30 minutes later.
Third time I've been to this restaurant in the past year and had mediocre food and lousy service. All three steaks ordered by our party was under cooked. Initial round of drinks came our separately. Servers are young kids with minimal training. Always pushing to order in a hurry, last one telling us about his recent health problems. I've just about crossed this off my list for fine dining. Last two times people wearing shorts and baseball hats? I know it's tennessee but you need to draw the line somewhere on dress code.
Maybe I am spoiled by the J Alexander's in Lexington, KY which is where I am used to. In comparison, I was rather disappointed. My prime rib just wasn't all that. The quality was more like $20 not $42. The au jus and the horseradish was not the best. The service wasn't the best. The atmosphere/music wasn't the best nor compatible. Just really disappointed. I would not return or suggest it to anyone based on the food alone.
Food 5⭐️s : We’ve never been disappointed in any of the food that we’ve eaten here. Steaks melt in your mouth. The seafood is mouthwatering. The sides are all delicious. The salads are the best in town. The desserts are guilt free. However, we were super disappointed to see that they no longer have the smoked salmon dip. It’s been a while since we’ve stopped in and that was always a favorite of ours.. Service 4⭐️s: We preferred the young gentleman running the food. He seemed to be more attentive and friendly. Our waiter kept sweet tea on the table, but he was not as polite or outgoing. I don’t need a waiter/waitress to act like we’re all best friends, but we do like to feel welcomed. One girl that brought the food was overbearing and pushing our appetizer plates out from in front of us (we were not finished!). The lady who brought the remainder of the food was much more mature and well-trained. Bathrooms 1⭐️: Wish we would have never taken a trip to the bathroom. The garbage was overflowing. There was one roll of toilet paper being shared between two of the stalls. No toilet paper on the roll holders. The soap dispenser’s top was broken off. And it smelled terrible! Had we went to the bathroom before being seated and had never eaten the food here- we would have left immediately. Knowing that the food is exceptional and enjoying the atmosphere kept us from leaving. Hoping that next time, it’s a 5⭐️ experience. Has all of the potential to be. All of the employees need to have the same standard..
⭐️ 2/5 — Wouldn’t Recommend I’ll start by saying the staff was genuinely good friendly, attentive, and doing their best. However, the food was so lackluster that it completely overshadowed the service. For the prices they charge, I expected something memorable, or at least flavorful, but everything tasted bland and underwhelming. Honestly, there are far better spots around the area to eat, and I left wishing I had gone anywhere else. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.
I usually have great experiences at J. Alexander’s, which is why tonight stood out in a disappointing way. I live out of state, so when I am back to Chattanooga I make sure to dine here with my family. This time service felt inattentive and rushed, extra silverware was left on the booth (my mom accidentally sat on them and laughed it off and set them on the table for her to take and she just acted confused) there were already 4 silverwares set on the table, appetizer plates weren’t cleared before entrées arrived, and food was placed on an already crowded table. The girls forced them on the table and didn’t take anything until we asked them too. There was also confusion when I asked for part of my entrée to be packed to go, she assumed I wanted these tiny scraps I had to pushed aside so it wasn’t included and told her.. Dessert was the final letdown. It’s normally served steaming hot and melting (carrot cake), but tonight it arrived barely warm and straight cold in the middle. Hoping this was just an off night, but it wasn’t up to the standard I expect here. Very disappointed.
We were very disappointed with our recent dining experience. For a restaurant that presents itself as high-end, the service and food quality did not meet expectations. My husband was not offered a refill when he finally got his meal, I ended up giving him mine, which is a basic standard of attentive service. In addition, his steak was served raw, and when we requested it to be corrected to medium-rare, it was returned overcooked to medium/medium well and heat flashed, which is unacceptable at this level of dining. Overall, this experience fell far short of what we anticipated.
J. Alexander’s was such a negative experience for me. This being my first experience eating here I can without a doubt say I would not recommend it to others. I will firstly say the food its self was not bad. I got the old fashioned burger and it was actually very tasty (of course it could have been because of how hungry I was considering how long we had to wait to get our food) I ate with a group of 10 which they do not accommodate. We had made a reservation the day prior for as early as possible because we had wanted to enjoy their brunch menu. On the phone the hostess had told us a group of ten would be no problem that they could push two tables together so we could all eat together. Arriving at the restaurant we were rudely told that pushing tables together is impossible because the tables are bolted to the ground. This wouldn’t have been a problem at all if we had be told this prior to making our reservation. We split our group up and sat at two separate tables to then be told the brunch menu is only for Saturdays something that was not listed on any website or told to us when we placed our reservation. So at 10am in the morning I ordered a burger. We sat for a very very long time while others filled in the restaurant and got bread served to their tables. We did not get bread served to our tables. We then watched as all these people who came in after us got their food while we waited. That who’s point we had been sitting there for an hour and a half and several tables had come and gone. One of my family members had to be at the airport at 12 that day and we thought he had plenty of time but it was 11:30 now and we had still not received our food. We brought this to the attention of our waiter that we didn’t mind waiting but that she needed her food to go now and he made a snarky comment about getting a clear box so she could take it on the plane. When if we had been served 30 minutes to and hour after we had placed our order she would have had plenty of time to eat with us. The food finally came was was decent but no where near the price tags. Our waiter struggled to place our tickets because of the outdated system they have and because we were partially at two separate tables. My over all experience was negative and I won’t be eating there again.
Something’s seriously wrong here. I’ve gotten sick multiple times after eating at this place — most recently after ordering the crab cakes. I’ve also heard from several others who’ve had the same experience: getting sick shortly after eating here. It’s become a clear pattern, and it raises serious concerns about food safety and proper storage. Until this is addressed, I strongly recommend others avoid eating here.
Friday afternoon we celebrated my daughter’s birthday. Unfortunately, one moment really took me by surprise. While I was looking down at my phone to check a work message, a server shoved my salad so abruptly and close to my face that it felt intrusive and uncomfortable. There was plenty of space on the table, so the way it was pushed towards my face struck me as unnecessarily aggressive and dampened what should have been a special luncheon. I wanted to share this experience because I value good service and respectful interactions when dining out. I hope the management can use feedback like this to ensure guests feel welcomed and respected.
