If you want to know what "Texas Style" really means, look no further than Hard Eight BBQ in Dallas. This isn't just a meal; it's a full-contact culinary event. The experience starts the second you walk up to those massive, wood-fired pits. You’re greeted by the Pit Master and a spread of meat that looks like something out of a medieval feast. From the brisket and jalapeño sausage to those massive pork chops, the selection is top-tier and the flavor is undeniably authentic. But here is the traveler's pro-tip: Hard Eight plays a dangerous game with your "eyes being bigger than your stomach." You order right off the pit and you pay by weight. When that Pit Master asks if you want "one more slice" or "a couple of those poppers," it’s easy to say yes—until you hit the register and realize you’ve just bought 4 pounds of meat for one person! They definitely don't mind racking up the bill, so go in with a plan (or a very large appetite). Despite the "sticker shock" potential, it is an absolute must-stop. The atmosphere is rustic, the food is phenomenal, and the experience of eating BBQ straight from the source is something you won't forget. Just maybe check your bank balance before you reach the front of the line!
Delicious Texas BBQ! This was my first visit to Hard Eight BBQ. Really enjoyed the smoker and meats outside the restaurant. Inside the restaurant it was a down-home feel. Open spaces and tables with elbow room. Brisket, Jalapeño sausage, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, beans, corn on the cob, and Mexican coca-cola. We will be back.
Great food and a lovely family friendly atmosphere. It started with a long line, but that line moves quickly. Grab any choice of meat, which is the hardest part because of all it looked SO GOOD. Then, you can grab sides of your choice. The meat was delicious, especially the sausages. I would recommended fried okra as a side. It was a huge hit with my family. The environment was very friendly and felt like a giant community.
Been a city boy my whole life. Walking in, seeing ember and smoke was beautiful. The brisket is so soft and flavorful. Amazing Mac and cheese!! Great portions. Would recommend to anyone new or traveling!!
I don't even like meat, but the brisket here was amazing! They also have a big selection of other things if you do like meat. When I showed up, the lineup was very big, but it moved very fast and the service was quick and friendly. The place also has a lot of seating and the vibe was very nice. Loved this restaurant in every aspect.
I’ve been going here for years, I still love going here more than any other BBQ spot in the DFW area. It’s the most reasonably priced, I love the BBQ pit and the ability to order anything by the pound. Today, I had the best smoked sirloin I’ve had yet. It was a perfect pink in the middle! 10/10 as always.
We walked up to the smell of mesquite burning out back and pounds of meat cooking up front. Two huge troughs were filled with an assortment of freshly grilled and smoked meats, and the guy working the meat tubs would give us as much or as little as we asked for (you pay by weight). After they tallied up our meats, we entered the dining hall, where there was a cafeteria-style counter full of fresh, single-serve sides. They were all individually packaged. At the end of the line, the cashier rang us up, and we probably pay a little more than we were expecting. The whole place was kept clean, and the wait staff was constantly walking around clearing and sanitizing tables. It was a great atmosphere and exactly what you’d expect from this style of BBQ joint. To sum it up, I’d say it’s a meat lover’s paradise.
All of the staff were very friendly, kind and helpful. It is similar to a “buffet style” restaurant. As you walk up in line (there is two lines, one is behind the first line) you will choose your meats straight off the smokers. It gets weighed and then from there you will go inside the building and that is where everything for your sides is located buffet style. Once you choose your sides you will check out and sit wherever you would like. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We heard good things about this place, I made the hour drive to give it a try and They did not disappoint!
Just good ol’ Texas BBQ! They serve it hill country style meaning you walk up to this giant freaking smoker and pick your meats. They got it all too!! I went with jalapeño cheddar sausage, brisket (it’s Texas) and pulled pork. I also ordered what they call poppers and they were chicken wrapped in some kind of hot pepper and bacon and they were spicy yet flavorful. Obviously when eating bbq you gotta get mac n cheese which was possibly some of the best Mac I’ve had. The potato salad was “twice baked” which was fire. They have free beans if you dine in the restaurant. Just a solid Texas BBQ place!
I stopped in and had a brisket sandwich on a jalapeño bun, a couple of chicken poppers, sweet potato fries, apple cobbler, and a tea — and everything was fantastic. The brisket was tender and flavorful, the jalapeño bun added the perfect kick, and the chicken poppers were great. Sweet potato fries were great and the apple cobbler was the perfect finish. I didn’t even have room for the free beans! Great food, great experience — highly recommend.
Ok, a little context is needed here. My brother had lived in the Dallas area for over 15 years, which tells you how long I have been coming to this Dallas-based chain. I believe they are up to 5 or 6 locations now in the DFW metroplex. I am most familiar with the Coppell location and that is the one featured in my photos. The visit occurred during Christmas time December 2025. One awesome thing about eating here or any other open pit BBQ restaurant in Texas (they are thick as thieves thankfully in the Lone Star State) is that as soon as you step out of your vehicle in the parking lot, you are immediately inundated with the smells of burning wood 🪵 🔥 and meat cooking. It really gets the salivary glands jump started and the belly also gets rumbling. The closer you get, the stronger the flavors and odors drift and by the time you place your order, the hunger urges have reached a fever pitch and crescendo. Hard Eight - like many other authentic TX BBQ joints - lets you observe 👁️ (and smell 👃) the meat cooking on the grills as you enter the line. They have a large metal heating station with steam table pans. You order your meat from the pit-master and he/she carves off your selections (ex. 1# of brisket, a rack of ribs) and place it on a metal tray with butcher paper. You go inside and select your side dishes, get your ramekins of BBQ sauce, select dessert, and get your beverage and pay. The tables are open seating and long wooden picnic tables / benches so there is a community type feel. One of the cool features at Hard Eight is the communal bean pot, which features pinto beans with bacon & jalapeños and is self-serve. I tend to make 2-3 fill ups as they taste *amazing*. This is what we tried on this visit - usually 1 person orders for the group and we all just eat family-style to maximize variety. You can always get a steak or they have prime rib on the weekends. We had: - beef brisket (moist & burnt ends) - baby back ribs - smoked turkey - spicy jalapeño sausage - shrimp wrapped jalapeño poppers Side dishes included the aforementioned bean pot as well as jalapeño cream corn, potato salad, and mac & cheese. We didn’t order dessert this visit as we had plans to have gelato & custard afterwards, but their banana pudding and peach cobbler are wonderful. The meal was on point as always. There is not much better food to my belly than Texas BBQ and this restaurant is a *must - stop* on every visit to Dallas. I lived here briefly 15 years ago and made this a regular stop during that time as well. I will continue to visit this restaurant on every visit - the next which will be in just a few months. I can’t recommend them enough if you find yourself in the DFW area.
Excellent bbq and lots of choice. The menu is by the pound / half pound, but you don't have to stick to those weights. If you want something different. Ribs were awesome, brisket was awesome, sausage (with jalapeños) was a bit disappointing. Lots of sides to choose from after you've got your tray of meat. Unfortunately they don't do cornbread. I had the potato salad & mac & cheese, both of which were good.
The people at the bbq that serve the food are very friendly and helpful, if you don’t know how much 1/3 or 1/2 of a pound of something is they will cut it for you so you have a visual representation and know if you are ordering too much or too little. It can get a bit pricey, it’s very easy to run your check high if you’re ordering willy nilly, so only order what you’re going to eat really. The brisket is more on the meaty side so if you like more of the fatty brisket let them know when they are cutting it for you, ribs are great, they have different sausages and they are all good. Bbq sauce is great, desserts are amazing. The mac and cheese is SO GOOD! Don’t leave without trying it.
We’re from Virginia and the experience we had at Hard Eight pit BBQ was incredible!! Walking through the pit to get our food was a new experience! The 16 ounce steak was delicious and prepared spot on! Our party actually had the sausages, brisket, chicken, and shrimp popper and everyone was happy! If you’re within an hour of this pit you need to visit! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My people of Google, let me tell you about a place that fully converted me. I thought I knew BBQ. I really did. But I made the life changing choice to visit my homeland of Dallas, TX, and my cousin's husband was like dude lessgooooo. I'm not gonna turn down an invite for BBQ so obviously I went along. My people. MY PEOPLE. LOOK AT THESE PICTURES. Don't even hesitate, if you're close GO THERE NOW. Be a convert like me! Why are you even still looking at this review, GO!
I was really impressed with Hard 8! Even though it’s a chain, it feels completely original — warm, welcoming, and home-like. The brisket was the star of the meal — so tender, juicy, and full of flavor that it practically melted in my mouth. Big shoutout to the pit master who took great care with our cuts of meat and made the whole experience feel personal. Prices were fair too, not hard on the wallet at all. I’d recommend this place anytime — amazing BBQ and a great atmosphere!
If you’ve never been the staff will fully orient you in the process-you walk in and get to see/smell the smoked meats when making your selection. My eyes were bigger than my stomach but it’s hard to resist when you see all the meat outside. They have a few sides outside but most are inside. Everything I had was delicious-needed no sauce whatsoever. I had smooth buttery brisket (super tender), jalapeño sausage -so flavorful, and delectable bacon wrapped shrimp. I had street corn, Mac n cheese, and a slice of chocolate pecan pie…I need a box please!!
Hard Eight BBQ – A True Taste of Texas I love good BBQ, and tonight I finally had the chance to experience authentic Texas barbecue at Hard Eight BBQ. This place is unlike any other restaurant I have visited. They run a buffet-line style selection process that works beautifully. Pro tip for first-timers: read the sign before you enter. It explains the process and will save you from over-ordering, something I admittedly failed to do. Since this was my first visit, I decided to try a little bit of everything: brisket, pulled pork, spicy sausage, bacon-wrapped shrimp, fried okra, twice-baked potato salad, baked beans, and corn on the cob. The BBQ was excellent across the board, but the fried okra stole the show and was hands down the best I have ever had. While outside, I had the chance to chat with one of the cooks, who explained that a crew comes in at 10 PM every night to start cooking the meats. They use massive BBQ pits fueled by fresh wood coals from two giant wood burners. It was an impressive operation and made me appreciate the flavor even more. If you are looking for something unique and authentically Texan, head over to Hard Eight BBQ and experience it for yourself. Just be prepared to eat and enjoy a lot.
Man I've eaten at many BBQ places in Texas and this is one of the best. Man I walked in and ordered my BBQ straight from the pit master. And they were real nice and friendly the restaurant set up is perfectly done a real nice atmosphere with a live band. I ordered brisket, half a chicken, jalapeno sausage, pork ribs, and beef ribs. Let me tell you them beef ribs are the best. Hats off to the pit masters and the lady's at the salad bar. If I could put 10 stars I would.
Was recommended to try this place out by some family. When you walk up, you are greeted by a large smoker full of different meats. There's plenty of side options to chose from which is great. We opted for the brisket sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, mac & cheese, and onion rings. The pulled pork was definitely the better entree, and the Mac & cheese was cheesy and delicious. Prices aren't horrible for the amount of food you get. The inside is very nice and plenty of spaces to sit. Would highly recommend for some good BBQ.
Hard Eight BBQ – A Delicious Texas Experience I recently visited Hard H in the Dallas–Fort Worth area for dinner, and it was absolutely wonderful. I ordered the baked potato stuffed with tender, flavorful brisket—truly a Texas-sized treat! After getting your main dish, you head to another area where you can choose from a variety of sides and desserts, each priced individually. Options include potato salad, fresh green salad, fruit cups, and more. The dessert selection is equally tempting, with peach cobbler, cherry pie, and other classic favorites that make it hard to choose just one. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with both indoor and outdoor seating available, making it a great spot for any occasion. From the quality of the food to the friendly vibe, Hard H delivers a fantastic barbecue experience that I’ll definitely return for.
The service by the guys who serve the meats is absolutely poor; i waited 22 min on the customer behind me, i ain’t exaggerating. Once i walked in to choose my sides and to pay, service by the ladies improved tremendously, Thank you Nada, Rosa, Morena and Teresa. They provided excellence which i couldn’t understand what happened with the guys serving the meat. Brisket had no taste. Iced tea was empty. Honestly i will go to the colony location.
This place was great. I'd recommend it. The staff and environment were awesome! The food was good, but by Texas standards it was only good. Nothing spectacular. In fact, I thought it tasted better as cold leftovers the next day, which was actually quite nice. One other thing that surprised me was the lack of variety on side dishes. I was expecting better. This is the primary reason for the three star rating. I go to a restaurant for the food. The staff and atmosphere are a contributing factor, but the food is the main attraction. Nevertheless, I'd still recommend eating here at least once and you can make your own assessment.
I have had better BBQ at IHOP. In Seattle. Than I had here. The brisket was extremely dry. The smoke flavor was very stale tasting. The sausage looks like it came from Kroger even though it was one of the better things on the menu. The ribs were slightly above average. The ham was dry. The smoked bologna was nothing more than shaved hot dog. The creamed corn was gross. Whiskey pie and cherry cobbler actually pretty good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. But man, that BBQ was some of the worst I've had anywhere. Obviously others know too being that it was pretty quiet at dinner time for a BBQ joint in the middle of Dallas.
Just now leaving this BBQ place. My bestfriend got the rib plate and a banana pudding and mud pie and I got a sliced brisket sandwich with poppers and the banana pudding and mud pie. We spent between the both of us $35 for average flavorless food. My brisket sandwich tasted like if I were to put a wad of wet toilet paper in between the buns, it tasted like literally nothing. My bestfriend said her ribs weren’t good either. Now we get to the dessert, it was very odd flavor like they have just been sitting they just don’t taste fresh tastes like much. I would love a refund but I’m sure they won’t give us one but we still have our receipts. I would rate it a 0 as we waited 40 minutes for nasty food. I have posted pictures of a “sliced brisket sandwich “ and got mush.
