This place has the best seafood in town , staff is friendly and welcoming. The manager there “ Gaby” has a very outstanding customer service, she greeted everyone with a smile . My husbands and I order the ceviche which was amazing as well as the salmon plate. This is a family oriented kind of place .
They go above and beyond when they make a mistake. Honestly wasn’t that big but I do appreciate the manager on duty Gaby was great. I really don’t have issues ever here they are fast and the food is good and although today it took a while they got it right. No attitudes, no excuses and the food was good.
Great place to eat, food was amazing, we went on a Sat and there were tables available. The only thing was the wait just to order a drink AFTER eating. There should be a separate line, and just walk up and order your adult drink. Not have to wait in a long line where others are ordering their food. BUT, I waited patiently and finally got my drink.
I had one small request and the manager (BRYAN) was such a great help! Very respectful, humble and helpful. He listened to what I had to say and he immediately fulfilled my request. If you want awesome customer service Big shucks is your place! <3
Good fish plates and combos, I like going when it's less busy.
I recently visited Big Shucks with my family on Valentine’s Day, and as usual, the food was absolutely fantastic. Since I’m not a seafood enthusiast, I always order the catfish fillet basket, accompanied by a Coke, water, and a frozen lime margarita. It’s a delightful combination!
No frills seafood joint that doesn't disappoint. Great flavors and fresh food. Sometimes lines are a little long but they move quick and tables are always made ready quickly by the great staff.
Had shrimp and sausage Gumbo also Tuna steak, okra was cooked great not slimy would have liked some French bread toasted & buttered(but hey, I'm not in New Orleans), asked for medium rare for steak, medium done is what happened(My thoughts are, it was the steaming grilled vegetables the Tuna was laid to rest onto, that may have led to over cooked Tuna. Next time I will ask, Tuna on the rice, Please), not pictured ceviche(malo, trozos de pescado a pequeños, hace mucho pico de gallo). All in all, will be back, even with these small things, I love it! ;)
The food here is terrific. The grilled salmon is delicious. I usually get that or the shrimp cedar salad which is also good and a lot of salad. The food is piled on the plate so you get plenty of food for the price you spend. The fried food comes out boiling hot so make sure you let it cool off but I'd rather have hot food than cold food.
Have been going here since 2005. Love the food. BEST OF ALL is that they use ONLY wild-caught shrimp from the Gulf and wild catfish from Mississippi. I really appreciate knowing where my food comes from and that it's not farm-raised or from countries who don't regulate the industry. Always great service. Cole slaw portion is really small, which is disappointing, and there is twice as much whipped cream on the key lime pie as their is filling. Have dined in a lot + gotten delivery + did take-out.
Great price for a family. The food was great and had a nice patio, line can get long but it goes by super quick. We live nearby and finally tried it, it was a hit for us and our toddlers!
Truly a Dallas staple. They offer all the classics when it comes to Mariscos/Seafood plates and dishes. This location is perfect for larger groups of friends or family for both indoor and patio seating. It is an older building, so it does have a ‘retro’ feel but the staff does a great job of keeping the area clean. Their buffalo sauce is incredible. All food items are delicious and the margaritas are some of the strongest in the city! Order 2 and you’ll be happy as can be. I recommend for anyone who loves seafood.
Went 8pm on a Saturday with a line out the door, but moved at a fair pace. Everybody was friendly and inviting, got the spicy shrimp cocktail which is served in a mug of the cocktail sauce blend, buffalo wings and a the boil. Was all absolutely delicious and they were pumping out the food. Despite it being packed got our food in less than 10 min. Will be back!
I just gotta say I’ve been going here for a long time and realized I never left a review! The food is so excellent and amazing. I use to order the crab legs when I was younger and it smacked every time perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. Honestly the chefs got skills and the price is worth it to me ! I recently been ordering catfish basket or ceviche and let me tell you !!! Real ceviche lovers know they make it so damn good it literally reminds me of how my abuelito made it and it taste like those good summer memories at my abuelo house waiting for the ceviche to be ready !!! I honestly love this place and the consistency with cooking great food is remarkable. I went yesterday for dinner and took it home shocked at how good everything always comes out ! My dinner was excellent and the service was perfect for me ! Big shucks the best seafood spot in Dallas Texas 💯 thank you for always serving me great quality food hitting the spot for me and my family all the time 🔥
My go to Dallas spot. When I am in town, this is the meetup spot for me and friends and family. The menu stays constant, the food is consistent, and this location, much like Its sister location on Greenville Avenue, hasn’t changed since the 1980’s. Kudos to Big Shucks owner(s) and Operators for maintaining this Dallas staple. It’s nostalgic to visit, and continues to provide new memories!
I was working close enough to be able to go buy there two times. I've been there plenty of times before over the many years. Aw shucks was my mainstay back in the 80s and 90s. Big shucks on mockingbird and in Richardson seem to be always packed. So if you can't get into aw shucks and can't find parking, go to Big shucks, not very far away from the Aw Shuck's restaurant but it's so great you won't regret it.
Saw a video online and decided to try this place out. Bf got the oysters (which he talked me into trying. They was great) and ordered another dozen. I tried the shrimp cocktail and ordered more to take home (Tuesdays they're $5, AND $2 margueritas on Mondays!!) Everyone was nice and helpful, you can't make you're own cocktail sauce. We will certainly be back. VP happened to be there and mentioned a new McKinney location. We look forward to that!
Fish and Coconut Shrimp basket was delicious. Quick service.
We love the spicy shrimp cocktail and the Chipotle shrimp tacos, tilapia tacos. And the po'boys.
Ohhh first time here and it was delicious! I had the build your fried basket. I picked the fried shrimp and coconut shrimp. If you like fresh...Big Shucks is the place. The coconut shrimp was sweet and really good! It came with a sweet sauce and it just added to the yummy of the coconut shrimp. The friend shrimp was also very good. The shrimp cocktail looked very nice but I did not try it...I’ll vouch for the one who ate and he said it was very good. They also had drinks, so naturally I tried a margarita. Very good!! It’s a family friendly restaurant and laid back. I’ll be taking my parents back to try the different selections they have.
Love the selection and variety of grilled and boiled seafood. We like that you can make your own custom cocktail sauce as they provide everything you need at a counter in the dining area - ketchup, worchestershire sauce, lemons, and great horseradish. My husband likes his really hot and I like mine pretty spicy. And of course you can get as much as you want and all the crackers you can stand to go with your oysters! Food comes out pretty quick too. They make a SUPER Mexican style shrimp cocktail also
My favorite place good service food always cook right.. Just the best
Another hole in the wall place. Was told line is usually out the door. You order, pay then seat yourself. Was quoted Saturday afternoon and not that busy. Recommend shrimp cocktail in the mug and their fried fish dishes. My salmon was good. Way too much food. Calamari was crisp outside and chewy inside perfect!
Pictures: the best recipe for cocktail sauce, fat horseradish dip w a topping of ketchup, 5 sprinkles of worcestshire and a helping of salt and pepp. Overall big shucks is a great easy seafood restaurant with a fun take on the make your own cocktail sauce. Drinks are cheap, seafood is priced great. Get the blackened catfish and cold boiled shrimp 🫡
One of the best shrimp tacos in DFW. Must try of you love sea food. Tried crispy calamari, raw oysters, fried shrimp and shrimp tacos. Shrimp tacos were awesomastic, and enjoyed oysters and fried shrimp. Crispy calamari was below average. Still given 5 star considering the value for the price we pay.
I have been coming here the past 18 years at least. Everything is always good. My favorite is the shrimp cocktail but you can’t go wrong with anything here. Even their wings are really really good! Be mindful of their busy times because that line can get LONG. You also cannot save seats just fyi. They have frozen Margaritas too which were very good. I had the Chamoy one recently and it wasn’t watered down like frozen drinks usually are. Ill continue coming here again and again
Near the Mockingbird station you can find a Dallas Oyster bar that has been around for years. My family has enjoyed multiple family get together's on their large patio, where our kids can be kids. They offer fast service, fresh taste, familiar employee faces and good prices. There is a variety menu with tons of options from Fried, Grilled, boiled to fresh open oysters. The drinks range from fountain, tap, margarita machine to bottles-domestic and imported. Their Margaritas are my favorite! They do have happy hour drink specials just call to check the times. We have moved pretty far South now and pass tons of Oyster Bars along the way back to Big Shucks, but we will always continue to come back as long as they are open! Janie
This place has only gotten better with time. My food was fresh and delicious. Prices are great too!
10/10 recommend! They know how to boil crawfish! Nothing seems to be frozen, we sat at the bar and saw the kitchen preparing all of the boiled seafood- crabs, shrimp, crawfish and they are alive when cooked! I am from Louisiana and I don’t go to very many Cajun seafood places here in Dallas because there are a lot of imposters- this feels authentic, order at the counter, picnic tables everywhere outside, huge patio.. skip the line and sit at the bar and order directly from the staff!
Big Shucks is a Dallas staple. Always fresh, ALWAYS delicious, and always busy BUT…. The staff here do a great job at getting food out, despite the rush!! I love the poboys. We enjoy the Mexican shrimp cocktail , as well. And can we just take a moment to recognize the wings??? Best wings from a seafood spot, hands down
I had a great experience here and highly recommend! I've been trying a new place for crawfish most every weekend and big shucks has knocked tejun out of my #1 spot so far. Everything I tried was delicious and flavorful. I sat at the bar and really enjoyed watching the kitchen staff do their magic. It was pretty amazing watching how fast they knocked out orders as a team, and something I've never witnessed before let alone that close. Crawfish was delicious, oysters were fresh and big, and the shrimp cocktail was amazing (reminded me of some I've had at restaurants in Mexico and socal) mango margarita was delicious and buzz worthy. Ample free parking and quick moving line, I'll definitely be back. Update big shucks has become my go to spot every weekend for the last month. I've really enjoyed everything I've ordered here
I'm back at the oceanfront. A small piece of my beachfront upbringing right here in DFW. Fresh seafood with a beach town vibe. We ordered snow crab boils, coconut 🥥 shrimp 🍤, fried pickles, raw and fried oysters. The oysters were so fresh. Even the fried ones melted like butter when you bit into it. Not dry at all. The customer service was excellent. The bus boys deserved every bit of the 20% tip I left. Even though it's counter service, the trash stayed cleared and anything we needed was brought to us double quick. They had a line out the door the whole time so apparently they have a reputation and from what I can tell, it is well earned. Excellent 😋
Oysters on the half shell were very fresh, albeit a bit spendy currently but that could be demand and season. Shrimp cocktail is to die for with customizable spice level and highly recommend a pound of their spicy garlic peel em & eat um shrimp. So delish. Have done takeout & dine in at this location. Fast service for both!
Big Shucks is the mother of Aw Shucks. Always crowded, but the line goes fast. My favorite is the coconut shrimp with steak fries with a shrimp cocktail side to share. On our last visit I had 8 butterflied fried shrimp with their flat fries. And who knew my favorite flavor and drink were a match made in Heaven...Mango Margarita!
The place is clean and organized but the food has no seasoning at all. The clam chowder and gumbo were both good. The fried shrimp was pretty good too but the fried fish had no flavor at all. Salt/Pepper, hot sauce nor tartar/ketchup helped with the flavor.
No frills seafood spot, with great mexican shrimp cocktails... order mild or spicy. Great lunch specials. Ordering is very slow, and on weekends, it is crowded. The shrimp po boys are good and filling.
The shrimp cocktail and the shucks boil never disappoint. The chicken strips on the other hand were tough and the key lime pie had a refrigerated flavor.
Food is shoty sometimes meaning, sometimes it's delicious, well cooked and prepared other times its rushed and notso tasty. We frequent here at least 2 times a month so maybe we just visit way too much. Every now and then we get some burnt tilapia or veggies but they happily replace it. Everything on menu is always fresh and delicious if prepared well. The salmon is the best I have ever had in my life and the shrimp cocktails are the best in dallas. All the flavors mend well. The customer service is always top tier. And the patio is always a nice experience when weather permits. This place is a must visit if coming to dallas. Weekday specials are a main reason we visit often. 2 people can easily dine for under $22. Tuesdays are my favorite because shrimp cocktails are only $5! And lastly catfish is authentic catfish, it is top tier in flavor.
Big Shucks has been a family tradition for years. I highly recommend the fried catfish (flaky and clean tasting) and coconut shrimp (super flavorful with a tasty dipping sauce). They have "make your own cocktail sauce" with instructions on how to do it. I love that, because I like extra horseradish. The hush puppies are crispy and with a wonderful cornbread interior. Their cocktel de camaron is also good (not pictured). Only downsides were my shrimp were chewy and the tarter sauce tastes like ranch. However, I will return.
Great place to get your seafood fix in Dallas. The fried catfish and crawfish (when in season) are great. The oysters are fresh and the ceviche has excellent flavor. There may be a little bit of a line when you get there, but you have to order at the counter before seating, so it moves quickly.
Great oyster poboy, if smaller than expected. Bread was fantastic and the fried oysters were cooked perfectly. The fries needed another minute in the fryer. They were not crisp, were a bit under cooked, and dense. My best friend, who brought me, said that was typical. Come on, guys... these are great opportunities here. There's nothing like good, crisp and fluffy steak french fries. I guess next time I will have to ask for well-done fries. Was not overly impressed with the crab balls, but I lived in Maryland for five years and I am quite finicky about crab balls. The hush puppies we're not quite Southern Standard, but they were damned good. The atmosphere is very casual and we got there just in time on Sunday before a line formed. My friend tells me they do a great job of cleaning tables to combat covid. Love that they have a huge outdoor seating area, but we sat inside because it was still a bit too chilly for some of our group. They would have gotten that fifth star from me if the fries had been crisp and a bit more golden brown.
The staff are very nice, the atmosphere is comfortable. I got a 6 pc fried shrimp, there’s really not much flavor the corn on the cob had a Cajun seasoning sprinkled on it but it was cold and the texture was pretty tough.
First time in. Place was really busy so thought I would give it a shot. Fried Catfish crust came off in large chunks and the fish was gray in color. Very little flavor on the crust as well. Hush puppies were mushy inside. Coleslaw was good. I consider myself a pretty good judge of fried fish having worked at Don's Seafood I'm Louisiana for many years when I was younger. I was very disappointed with the fish at this place.
Let me start out by saying that I don't like to post bad reviews. The food here is great but the way that it's run and the customer service are not. It was 39° outside and they had a line out the door with no patio heaters and families with small children had to leave because the children were cold. There was one cashier taking orders when they had two POS systems available. What I heard around me while in line was that it took 45 minutes to go 6 ft. I also heard after I sat down that a gentleman had been coming here for 20 years and its never been so f'ed up. Our total wait time in line was around 50 minutes but we got our food in less than six. We had a dozen oysters, crawfish, crab legs and a shrimp cocktail. All of our food was delish! The kitchen had six to seven people cooking and preparing food but at any given point three had nothing to do. I would suggest coming here during non peak times.
We've eaten here several times and it's always been great. We came in today and the shrimp, catfish and hushpuppies were cold and rubbery with no flavor. As always the shrimp cocktail was excellent!
The fried catfish filet was mostly hard fried batter. The catfish and chicken tenders we ordered had no flavor, very bland. My girlfriend ordered the caldo de mariscos and she said it was flavorful. The decorations were typical seafood restaurant decor , but still nice. The staff was friendly.
Been going to Aw Shucks and Big Shucks for maybe 30 years. This was the last time. Ordered both of the seasonal specials. A Cod tostada of some sort and some shrimp dish with spicy cucumber onion and other items. They both could have been good dishes but they weren't. I asked if the Cod was a breaded and fried or pan seared dish and he affirmed it was a breaded and fried dish over a cabbage mix. It wasnt. It was pan seared which would have been great but it seemd as though it was done maybe an hour or so before hand or something. Terribly overcooked, dry, hard, and only semi warm, like it had just been resting under the heat lamps for a good long while. The shrimp dish was just as bad. Could have been a good dish but was drowning in the lime sauce and the shrimp were all but inedible. They were some combination of chewy rubber and mush. Again like they had been cooked well before hand and reheated or something. Also ordered a pound of boiled shrimp. Ate maybe half of them then gave up. Again, over cooked, rubbery and flavorless, as if they were cooked once, then sat waiting on an order and tossed back in to warm them up. Had the snow crab legs and they were at least reasonably decent. The boil obviously wasnt spiced much but they were cooked properly which for $40/lb they should be. Got a catfish filet, they cooked all the good out of it. Breading stayed on but really it wasnt very good. Flat, thin, wide, over cooked. Got some of their usually quite amazing hush puppies. Not so amazing, all were under cooked, and just doughy in the middle. This meal was $125 before tip. We arrived at 4:50pm and the line was out the door, not out of character for Big Shucks but damn at 4:50? They do move the line along at a decent pace and turn the orders and therefore tables rather quickly. I suspect that's the issue these days. Too much of a good thing, and too many people demanding food has driven shortcuts in what used to be a great place to stop for a boiler and some beer. I don't see a reason to come back and subject ourselves to the wait and elbow to elbow crowd for some pretty terrible food. Hate to see it but that's just the facts of Shucks today.
very noisy we hit it at 5:00 on a Friday night and it was already crowded, part of my order was ready quickly, while my appetizer lagged with the other persons meal. the shrimp tacos and catfish were good, the fried calamari not so much. Disappointed only plasticware for utensils
I had left a 5 star review in 2018, when proportions were huge, price was fair, and staff were friendly. I'm updating my review in 2020 because it seems they have become progressively worse. I go often to Big Shucks. Had good experiences and not so good experiences. I figured they had off says but the continue to not do so well. This time I went and ordered my usual. Well it's no longer worth the price. The crawfish were small. I used a cracker for comparison. The catfish looked like someone at the front took a bite. One tiny potatoes and one corn. At Crawlin' Crab you get 1lb of everything for the same price. I don't know why Big Shucks let themselves go. They also no longer follow the honesty policy.
I was craving a fried catfish and shrimp platter so bad. I went according to ratings before I pick the restaurant as someone from Louisiana I was so disappointed when I got In my car just to try it before I got home. I had put extra crispy for my fish picked it up and it broken half no crispiness at all just cooked enough to say it was done. And when I say there is no seasoning, I mean absolutely no seasoning on that fish. The only way to get flavor on it is to stick it in ketchup or tartar sauce same goes with the shrimp no seasoning at all the french fries were soggy and the grease appeared to be very dark what it was cooked in tartar sauce was mediocre tartar sauce is supposed to be sick and this is the consistency of a thin gravy, hush puppies again taste like they were cooked in old grease with the french fries grease came out when I took a bite out of it. You have to buy the hush puppy separately when normally a fish platter or fish and shrimp platter comes with fries and hush puppies then the coleslaw is usually extra
Had been craving a seafood boil for a while and really wanted to swing by this restaurant since it had been a long time that I hadn’t visited. It used to be excellent so I had big expectations. Sadly it was very disappointing. This place has gone downhill. It is dirty. It is warm. It is unorganized. It is crowded and loud. The floors were sticky. There was all kinds of unorganized chaos. Thru our visit we saw and heard kids being loud, crying and the staff said nothing to the parents despite of how uncomfortable it obviously was to everyone around., the worse one was a family that sat next to us and their kid had his iPad in full volume…. We patiently waited to see if anyone from the STAFF would say something but apparently that’s okay and acceptable. Finally I asked the parent if this kid if he could lower the volume. I ended up packing it up and taking it to the comfort of my home and adding some corn, potatoes and boiled eggs 🥚 (which they don’t offer) and actually enjoying it. 👌👌👌 It was honestly better and more savory than what I had at the restaurant. What has happened to public dining etiquette? It’s fully on the property management to enforce proper etiquette to accommodate their clients and make sure everyone has a good experience. The food was good but for what we paid and the quality and experience., I do not recommend it. Parking was full., there were trucks parked on the grass and their patio was occupied despite of the hot Texas weather. It’s sad to see a place I once loved become so unpleasant.
Went there to eat seafood with family and friends to celebrate a birthday. After waiting more than 45 minutes for my order, I was told that they had forgot to make my order and that the kitchen was already closed. Bad service and disappointed because I was really looking foward to a good meal.
First time eating here so I’m thinking since the place is packed out the door it must be good! Nope it’s terrible!! $50 for 7 pieces of the thinnest fish I’ve ever eaten in my life! Please see photos! What I hate is how these establishments are getting the business and still getting over just why tho? SMH!! And it doesn’t taste like American Catfish more of a Swai taste & texture:(
We come to this location 1-2 times a month and tonight will be our last night. The place is always busy and we endure it because the food is usually good. Tonight, I was in line to order our food. When I was next to place the order, my Mom went to go find a table for us. She sat down as I was ordering our food at the counter. The woman working the food pick up station made her get up from the table (there were 4 other tables in the vicinity who had done the same thing but they weren't directed to do this) because someone else who "was there before us" needed a place to sit. There were 3 other empty tables that hadn't been cleaned yet that could have been used for them. Instead, she made my elderly mother get up only for those people to change their minds and move to one of the freshly cleaned tables. We ended up getting the exact same table she was told to get up from.
Be careful there’s people stealing cars and breaking into cars stealing your stuff. It wasn’t even 10 minutes and the broke a window and searched the truck. They didn’t want to let you see video footage so filed a police report. And that black Honda circled around the parking lot a few times. Be careful because this was in broad daylight and it’s not the first time this happens. The restaurant won’t show you footage and has no security knowing this isn’t the first time it happens. Who knows if they knew the people and they work with them.
My first time trying this place this service was good but the food wasn't at all I ordered 1. 6 buffalo wings hard over cooked and dry 🫤 2. A blackend shrimp salad with wilted avacado 🫤 3.shrimp gumbo and spent almost $40 and threw it all out It's was terrible the ranch dressing was hard and old this was a waste of money $$$ I will never go there again 🫤
As someone else said here I also made a mistake and grab some catfish fillets that were super thin. But the thing I hate the most how unflavored all the food was. Please use some seasonings with the prices you charge.
Food is great and the restaurant itself isn’t bad but there’s been TERRIBLE AND ON GOING CAR THEFT since at least last year, in their parking lot. the restaurant owners/employees do not seem to care. I wouldn’t feel comfortable eating here anymore knowing that many vehicles have been taken while ppl dine.
